Tisha B'Av means "the ninth (day) of Av." It usually occurs during August. Tisha B'Av primarily commemorates the destruction of the first and second Temples, both of which were destroyed on the ninth of Av (the first by the Babylonians in 586 B.C.E.; the second by the Romans in 70 C.E.). Tisha B'Av is the culmination of a three week period of increasing mourning, beginning with the fast of the 17 th of Tammuz, which commemorates the first breach in the walls of Jerusalem, before the First Temple was destroyed. During this three week period, weddings and other parties are not permitted, and people refrain from cutting their hair. From the first to the ninth of Av, it is customary to refrain from eating meat or drinking wine (except on the Shabbat) and from wearing new clothing. Continued on page 2

2 August 2014 Continued from page 1 The restrictions on Tisha B'Av are similar to those on Yom Kippur: to refrain from eating and drinking (even water); washing, bathing, shaving or wearing cosmetics; wearing leather shoes; engaging in sexual relations; and studying Torah. Work in the ordinary sense of the word [rather than the Shabbat sense] is also restricted. People who are ill need not fast on this day. Many of the traditional mourning practices are observed: people refrain from smiles, laughter and idle conversation, and sit on low stools. In synagogue, the book of Lamentations is read and mourning prayers are recited. The ark (cabinet where the Torah is kept) is draped in black. Village Family BBQ The Village Family BBQ will take place this year on Wednesday, August 20 th. If you have not submitted your RSVP for this event, please do not forget to do so. The RSVP deadline date is August 4 th. Art Class Please sign up at the bulletin board if you would be interested in having a professional art teacher come to the building to conduct an art class. We will need at least 10 participants who are willing to participate in a weekly class in order to apply for an instructor. 4 Mt. Airy Casino Trip Deposit Happy August Birthday Effective immediately participation on the Mt. Airy trip will require a $2.00 non refundable deposit at the time of sign up. The deposit will be returned when residents depart the bus at Mt. Airy. Please see Marnie Kean for application. If you qualify, you will receive $20 in vouchers which can be used at any Farmers market in Essex County. The Farmers Markets will carry fresh fruits and vegetables along with bread and other items as well. Please complete application and return to Marnie ASAP. Marnie will obtain the vouchers and give them out as soon as we receive them. Please contact us for more information. Arrangements have been made for Village residents to visit the South Orange Farmer s Market one Wednesday each month beginning in the month of August.

5 Manager's Corner Top Eleven Tips on Keeping Seniors Safe in Summer Heat 1) Drink plenty of liquids -- eight or more 8-ounce glasses per day and or fruit juices -- every day to stay hydrated. 2) Avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages. 3) Dress appropriately. Wear loose-fitting clothes in natural fabrics like cotton and dress in light colors that will reflect the sun and heat instead of darker colors that will attract them. 4) When outdoors, protect your skin from damage by wearing hats, sunglasses and a sunscreen of 30 SPF or more. 5) Stay indoors during extreme heat. 6) If you do not have air conditioning in your apartment, go somewhere that does. A movie theater, the mall, a friend or relative's home or a community senior center are all good options. 7) If you need to get out of the house and don't drive a car, call a taxi, a friend or a transportation service. Do NOT wait outside for the bus in extreme heat. 8) If you are absolutely unable to leave the house and do not have air conditioning, take a cool bath or shower to lower your body temperature on extremely hot days. 9) Temperatures inside the home should not exceed 85 degrees Fahrenheit for prolonged periods of time. 10) Know the signs of heat stroke (e g flushed face, high body temperature, headache, nausea, rapid pulse, dizziness and confusion) and take immediate action if you feel them coming on 11) If you have a chronic medical problem, talk with your doctor about additional precautions you should take to prevent heat related illness. Some conditions and medications may place you at higher risk.

6 Concierge/Security As our residents know, JCHC takes their safety and security very seriously and our Concierge/Security staff is on the job to help our seniors in many ways. From emergency procedures to safeguarding package deliveries, our concierge/security guards make sure all JCHC residents receive the service they need with details that make their lives easier. These front-desk employees do more than watch the door. In their concierge capacity, they help residents sign up for transportation on our JCHC buses, put in repair work orders for the residents, and accept their meal delivery orders or packages that are delivered. They answer the main switch boards, route outside calls and answer emergency calls by residents promptly. Our activities staff also relies on them for help in setting up for evening activities. 7 South Orange Senior Citizen Advisory Committee member Sheena Collum met with Village residents to discuss township concerns. Entertainer Patrica Walton performed for Village residents. Speaker Sylvia Kramer conducted a program entitled, Worry where does it get us? Exercise with Tami Village Apartments residents are invited to get physically fit while having lots of fun. Exercise with Tami takes place each Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in the Village Apartment s dining room. The class is free. All are invited to attend!
