Rosh Hashanah arrives early this fall, Sunday night, September 9th, and we look forward to being together again in prayer, song, reflection and celebration. We know we can accommodate all reserved seat holders who wish to attend, but we do require your help in informing us of your plans. If your seats are in the Fifth Avenue Sanctuary, please confirm your Rabbi Joshua M. Davidson attendance for both Rosh Hashanah Evening and Yom Kippur Afternoon on your seating renewal forms and your seats will be honored; if you do not plan to attend either of those services, we ask that you let us know so those seats can be reassigned. If your seats are in the Lowenstein Sanctuary, please confirm whether you plan to attend these services so tickets can be issued to you in the Fifth Avenue Sanctuary. We have included the High Holy Day schedule on the following pages, and we ask that you share your plans with us as soon as you are able. NEW PRICING FOR ASSOCIATE MEMBERS Temple Emanu-El is committed to supporting our young members and making congregational life accessible. 8 TEEN REFLECTIONS: MIA ZANG As I go through the final stretch of my senior year of high school, I spend many hours a day thinking about the future and what I will spend the rest of my life doing. So much so that sometimes I have to remind myself to look back at all my life has already consisted of; and in doing so, I find that many of my best memories are connected to Temple Emanu-El. 8 From singing The Tree of Life on the bimah with the rest of the Junior Choir to standing on the same bimah, this time chanting my Torah portion as I became a Bat Mitzvah, there was never a point in my childhood in which I was not involved in some way at Emanu-El. Even as young as six years old, I looked forward to the family services. Of course, a large part of my excitement was probably thanks to the delicious cookies I knew would follow at the reception. But I was almost equally excited by the sermons following the reading of the Torah. I would listen intently as the Rabbi regaled us with funny and interesting stories. Little did I realize the moral lessons these tales held, but today, though I may not remember the characters names or their adventures, I do remember the lessons these stories taught and apply them in my own life each day as I strive to be a better Jew and overall a better person. My involvement with Temple Emanu- El has extended far past the stained glass-enclosed boundaries of the main sanctuary. Atlanta, Georgia in 2015 was my first teen trip with Emanu-El. My favorite part of this trip was planting a garden for a nearby community, although at the time, I may have thought otherwise as cold water and soil seeped into my socks. With the help of some garden-savvy locals, we planted rows upon rows of seeds that would grow into fresh produce for the community members, and learned about the food deserts that plagued so many of these Atlanta neighborhoods. This made me appreciate the delicious fried chicken and peach cobbler we feasted on so much more. I brought this appreciation back with me to New York, a city where it is sometimes hard to remember that for many, access to nutritious, fresh food is incredibly limited, as we take the abundant and diverse quantities of food at our disposal for granted. The following year, my temple involvement took me all the way to Prague in the Czech Republic. I fell in love with everything, from the beautiful buildings and cobblestone-lined streets to the friendly people and the cream-filled pastries. However, what resonated with me the most was our trip to Terezin, a concentration camp located right outside the city. We were greeted by the chilling words arbeit macht frei, work sets you free. It was at this moment that I was hit with the true reality of the Holocaust. Serving as a model camp for inspectors, Terezin deceived many, both outsiders and more notable Jews, by looking like a completely livable city. The reality was that once one entered through those gates, the next time they stepped out would be en route to a gas chamber. As we walked through the grounds and stood in prison cells, I gained a much clearer perspective of the indescribable hardships that took over the lives of so many Jews, including some of my own ancestors, in the time of the Holocaust. I am beyond fortunate to have been exposed to so much throughout my childhood through my involvement with Temple Emanu-El. These experiences opened my mind to truly understand what it means to be Jewish, as well as what I personally can do to contribute to the Jewish community. I have continued to stay involved both through the Benefit Committee in past years and currently through A-TEEM. No matter the magnitude of involvement, I know that all the work I have already done through Temple Emanu-El has made a difference; a difference that will continue to grow as I remain a part of this community in the future.

11 Community, Compassion, Commitment More Powerful Together Thanks to the generosity of our congregants, Temple Emanu-El raised over $1 million last year to support charitable, humanitarian and educational efforts around the city, our nation, and the world. The Philanthropic Committee, chaired by John Sorkin, includes lay leaders and clergy who together allocate the funds raised. To instill these values in our children, five years ago the Committee began allocating funds to a Teen Philanthropic Council made up of students in our Religious School and advised by members of our Department of Lifelong Learning. The teens engage in a year-long process to identify potential recipients and allocate these funds to one or more organizations. This year, inspired by their example, the Young Member s Committee, made up of members in their 20s and 30s, created a Young Members Giving Circle, seeded with support from the Philanthropic Fund and increased by commitments from the members themselves. Unlike most congregations, Temple Emanu-El s Yom Kippur Appeal is focused entirely on the Philanthropic Appeal, rather than the Annual Fund which supports the programs and budget of the Temple. We are proud of our philanthropic tradition and the many good causes it supports, and especially proud to see this tradition continued. Teen Philanthropic Committee: Why Brooklyn Boatworks? Teen Philanthropic Committee members Maxine Jamison and Zoe Mikhelzon share their grantee news with the Religious School. Funded by Temple Emanu-El s Philanthropic Fund, the Teen Philanthropic Committee is a unique opportunity to help New York City. Meeting monthly, our 8th through 12th grade committee members come together to participate in the grant-making process. Every year, the committee is tasked with selecting an issue affecting New Yorkers, create a mission statement, research organizations, and design a grant application to be used by nonprofits who are seeking funds. They participate in site visits to assess what the organizations are doing and decide who may be best served by the grant. For the year, the Teen Philanthropic Committee selected education as their issue and, after an extensive search, chose Brooklyn Boatworks as their grantee. In addition to learning more about educational opportunities for children, we also learned about what it means to come to consensus. We all came to the table with different opinions on what our focus should be this year. We agreed on moving forward with educational opportunities for children by listening to each other, a bit of creativity, and compromise. Teen Philanthropy Committee Brooklyn Boatworks provides projectbased STEM learning to 150 disadvantaged students across the city through a boat-building process. As they work together to build an Optimist pram (a small sailboat), they read blueprints, study math, conservation and water ecosystems, and build leadership skills. Brooklyn Boatworks will receive a check for $10,000, and the Teen Philanthropic Committee is excited to follow the organization and their development in the coming year. Young Members Giving Circle The Young Members Giving Circle partnered with Slingshot, an organization that specializes in strategy development for next-generation Jewish funding, offering links to many organizations in need of funding. Working with Slingshot, The Circle members decided their motivational values included helping others in need, supporting innovation, and building community, and made two grants to the organizations described below, with a third smaller grant to support one of the Temple s outreach programs. The Philanthropic Fund is one of Temple Emanu-El s jewels. I ve been fortunate to learn about the rigorous process the Fund undertakes as a committee member and I wanted to introduce it to the Younger Membership through its own Giving Circle. We exceeded our first year expectations around gross donations and participation. By making it so anyone can be a part of the Circle, by partnering with an organization that takes a venture approach to giving and by leveraging Temple Emanu-El s incredible history of philanthropy and oversight, we were able to drive deeper engagement with our young members while having impact in diverse communities. Daniel Jeydel, Co-Chair, Young Member s Committee and member of the Giving Circle continued on the next page... 11
