2 CONGREGATION OF MOSES THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS always welcomes comments from COM congregants and invites you to attend its regular board meetings, typically held the first Tuesday of each month. Minutes of board meetings are available upon request from the synagogue office. Executive Committee President Tema Lando st Vice President Beth Grode nd Vice President Brad Hershbein (617) Treasurer Steve Grode Secretary Connie Bowman Immediate Past President Tamara Norman Past President Shirley Wise Synagogue Staff Rabbi Harvey Spivak Religious School Principal Susan Katz-Scheinker Office Manager Shirley Mengel Building Manager Rod Anderson President s Message Dear COM Members and Friends, December. Winter. Feeling the cold wind, the low temperatures on my face, and surrounded by the beautiful white carpet of snow, I dress to brave the elements. I truly enjoy coming for Shabbat services: Shabbat the bride, all dressed up in white, inviting us to come and celebrate. Once, inside our Synagogue, I feel the warmth and the friendship that surrounds me. COM is our place, our house of worship and camaraderie. As, with any small synagogue, our dedicated members are committed to bringing programs and events for all of us to enjoy; unfortunately, at the same time, COM is facing a deficit of $37,000. This month we will be celebrating Hanukkah, we remember the struggles of our People. It is a time of rededication, togetherness. We continue to feel strong about our faith, following the path for our Jewishness. Our Kehillah is like that little engine that could. With our great members dedication, we can accomplish anything. I like to thank Diane and Harvey Fogel, our latest contributors to the Yom Kippur General Fund pledge. Wishing, that the bright lights of the Hannukka candles, shines upon you and your family. B Shalom, Tema Lando, President The COM bulletin is published monthly by the Congregation of Moses for the benefit of its members. The deadline for submitting articles, photos and ads is the third Monday of each month for publication the following month. 9 MEN S CLUB Men s Club prepared the delicious brunch for the Library program featuring Rabbi Deborah Boden Cohen, and we have a lot of individuals to thank for their efforts. They include Phil Horwich, Paul Nimz, Adam Srauss, Charlie Ofstein, Ken Eisenberg, Steve Koss, and yours truly. Janet Heller also helped stage the event. The next meeting will be Sunday, December 14, when we will prepare latkes for the COM Hanukkah party. As always, we are looking for volunteers, and welcome and value your participation. Neal Berke SISTERHOOD November 18 This year we decided to have Sisterhood Shabbat in November, instead of January, so we might avoid a January snow storm, so instead we got a November snow storm! Even so, we had a spirited group for Friday night and Shabbat morning services. We used a preprint of the Friday night service from the soon-to-be published Lev Shalom Siddur, which includes the matriarchs whenever the patriarchs are mentioned. It also includes the traditional form of the prayers, so that the prayer leader may use whatever form they are more comfortable with. Toda Raba to Janet Heller for organizing the service and to all who participated: Betty Hiirschfield, Pat Kirschner, Gillian and Montana Thommes, Jen Rubin, Shirley Wise, Natalie Spivak, Alice and Steve Koss, Susan Welbourne, Marian Fisher, Saraphoena Koffron, Tema Lando, Rachel, Shira, Nava, and Mazal Haus, Gloria Besbris, with special thanks to our Torah Readers: Pnina Ari-Gur, Rachel Haus, Janet Heller and Susan Katz Scheinker and to our Haftorah chanter Michelle Angel. We enjoyed a lovely oneg Friday night and Kiddush luncheon Saturday afternoon, prepared by Liz Siegal and Beth Grode and sponsored by Janet Heller. Although it was cold outside, we were fortunate to enjoy warm feelings inside. November 23: We had a Sisterhood board meeting on Sunday, after the Rick Recht program. We passed our budget for During the meeting the rummage sale was discussed and Emily Hoffman volunteered to chair it. It will be held some time before the High Holidays. Janet Heller volunteered to do the publicity. We will coordinate with Connie Bowman to see what dates are available. Coming up on December 14th from 9:30 to 1:30 is the Hanukkah Bazaar. Chaired once again by Kim Rubin, this year it will include an art sale. Be sure to check it out. If you can volunteer some time, please contact Kim. Judy Davis-Rosenthal PAGE 9

10 Jewish Pride in Bronson Park For the second year in a row, the Jewish community will have a presence in the annual winter holiday display in downtown Kalamazoo s Bronson Park. Our 12-foot-tall Hanukkah menorah will be put together and installed on Sunday December 14 th at 12:30 pm on the corner of Rose and South streets across from the Kalamazoo Public Library. If you can help, please join us. The Federation purchased the menorah last year with financial contributions from generous local donors, the Congregation of Moses, Temple B nai Israel and Chabad of Kalamazoo. A candle lighting will take place at 6 p.m. every night of Hanukkah, which begins Tuesday December 16th. Two nights will have particularly special celebrations: On Tuesday, Dec. 16th, the first night of Hanukkah, the candle lighting will be followed by a talk by Barak Barfi in the Kalamazoo Public Library. See flyer on page 7 for more information. And on the second night of Hanukkah, Wednesday, Dec. 17th, there will be a candle lighting ceremony with Religious School students and their families. The entire community is invited to attend the candle lighting this night and every night of the holiday. Please join us as we let our Jewish Pride shine in Kalamazoo! Volunteers are needed to light the menorah candles (light bulbs) nightly and take down the menorah after the 23rd. Please contact Al Rosenthal at alvin.rosenthal@wmich.edu to volunteer. PAGE 10

It is only available behind the meat counter, and you must ask for the Empire Brand (as most employees don t know what kosher is). No password or secret handshake is required! They will stock chicken, but turkey must be special ordered. Alan will be the point person for orders to simplify this process, so him to place your order at COM.kosher@gmail.com. Turkeys currently run $1.99 per pound, and three-pound bags of flash-frozen split chicken breasts are $ very reasonable if you know your prices! On another note, Alan is trying to compile a list of other kosher items that could be stocked if there is enough interest. So, let him know what you want to be available there, and he will coordinate ordering with a manager. Thanks Alan! We appreciate your efforts on our behalf. PAGE 11

14 Rabbi s Message Jewish Wisdom: Pirkei Avot that s the subject this year for The Essential Jewish Ideas. How did the events of Hanukkah change the way Jews thought about their relationship with God, and how does that change affect us to this day? And what spiritual advice arose from those events that we can use now? In The Essential Jewish Ideas: Jewish Wisdom in Pirkei Avot we look at these and other interesting questions. Pirkei Avot is an easily accessible book of Jewish wisdom that never fails to instruct, advise and surprise. It s a great book to get acquainted with so you can turn to it again and again. You will discover why, over the centuries, Pirkei Avot has been the most popular book from the formative years of Rabbinic Judaism. Next meeting: Sunday, December 7, 11:30 to 12:30. --Rabbi Harvey Spivak Notice: On Friday nights, on an experimental basis, we will be using a new siddur twice per month. It is the advance version of the Lev Shalem siddur, which is scheduled to be published by the Conservative movement in It has a new translation which tries to be, as much as possible, free of references to God in masculine terms. We welcome your comments. It is not the final version, so it is subject to changes by the editors before the final edition. When the full, hard-cover edition is published, we will be discussing whether to purchase it to replace our current Sim Shalom siddur. Your comments and feedback will again be solicited at that time. We ve prepared a survey about egalitarian worship and the new *Lev Shalem* High Holiday and Friday night prayer books on Survey Monkey. Please answer the three questions: completing this survey will take less than five minutes. The link is Thank you for doing our survey! Best wishes! Sincerely, Anne Fischell, Rachel Haus, Janet Heller, and Emily Hoffman THE RABBI S RECOGNITION CERTIFICATE GOES TO... Richard Kirschner The Congregation of Moses thanks you for your strenuous effort to re-organize the synagogue s finances. We also thank you for designing a system that will allow us to budget and plan for the near future and strengthen our prospects for the long term. TODAH RABBAH! PAGE 14

15 Rick Recht Weekend Facebook was alive with videos, pictures, and comments about the amazing Rick Recht Shabbat weekend. Rick brought some excitement, ruach, and unity to the Kalamazoo Jewish community this past weekend and, thanks to Rick, we have also discovered what a truly musically talented Jewish community we have! Saturday night wasn t just a Rick Recht Concert it was also a Kalamazoo Jewish Community Concert, for many adults and children joined him on stage to perform. Here is a Facebook comment from TBI participant Naomi Morse: One of my musical dreams was realized tonight. Not only did I get to hear the amazing Rick Recht in concert, but I got to play violin, (with a brief solo in the middle), and share the stage with Rick and the talented Jen Rubin. The Jewish Federation sponsored this weekend extravaganza and we would like to thank Rick for bringing this small Jewish community together for such a spiritually uplifting and amazingly fun weekend. The weekend started with a fabulous Shabbat dinner followed by an exceptionally wonderful musical and interactive Shabbat service led by Rick and Rabbi Spivak who invited children and members of the community to help lead prayers and join in on a very joyous Shabbat! On Saturday night Rick had the audience singing, dancing, and clapping, as he serenaded us with some amazing Jewish Rock music. When Rick did Havdallah and sang Hallelujah there was some audience participation and these participants talked about unity and coming together and how important this is, how important it is for the whole Jewish Community TBI, CoM, and TBE, to come together. The weekend concluded with a joint Religious School Workshop and another concert in which the kids got another chance to be on stage and rock and roll with Rick. Thanks to everyone who helped make this weekend happen, and there are many of us. Thanks to the Federation board who all worked together to pull off another exceptional event, Al Rosenthal, Jacob Weintraub, Liz Siegel, Myral Robbins, Gillian Thommes, Larry Kaiser, and Debroushe Haller. Thank you to Jen Rubin and Naomi Morse for working with the children for weeks to learn the Rick Recht songs so that they could perform with him. Thank you to Susan Katz-Scheinker and Kristi Arntzen for allowing time during Religious School for the learning of these songs. Thanks to Rabbi Spivak for leading services with Rick on Friday night. Thanks to all participants who shared the stage with Rick and to all who helped with the Shabbat dinner and Sunday s brunch, Joyce Cahmi, Gerry Tregerman, Michelle Angel, Gillian Thommes, Judy Davis, Liz Siegel, Rachel Haus, Shirley Wise, Jacob Weintraub, Maxine Berke, Rae Lee Howard, Myral Robbins, Jerry Robbins, Susan Katz-Scheinker, Ann Fischell, and Valarie Eisenberg. Thank you to Mike Siegel for doing the sound and to Sam Siegel for assisting Rick with all his video requests. This amazing weekend was made possible by the Jewish Federation of Kalamazoo and Southwest Michigan with financial support from the Ravitz Foundation and the Etz Chaim Gubin Educational Fund. In order to continue to offer wonderful programs like this, we need your financial support. If you have contributed in the past we are very grateful and we hope you will continue to give. If you have never given to the Federation I hope after this past weekend you will be inspired to help support the Jewish Federation. PAGE 15

Thank you Rachel Haus for orchestrating this valuable learning experience and including our school. Thank you to the Federation, for coordinating a wonderful concert and singing experience with Rick Recht. Jenifer Rubin has generously come to our school for several Sundays to help us prepare for the concert. We enjoyed the added energy and dance time, together as a whole school. Todah Rabah! Each family/student in 5th grade and older will have an assessment of their skills and goals along with next steps for continued education.
