8 Palestine in March of While in high school, Jochanan joined the Haganah and upon graduation completed a year of compulsory national service. He then enlisted in the army just as Israel s War of Independence broke out. FEATURING Mabel and Jochanan Stenesh by Mabel and Jochanan Stenesh; photo by Carolyn Kennedy It was on a balmy September evening in 1956 at Hillel on the University of California-Berkeley campus, where a dance to welcome new and returning Jewish students was taking place, and where a returning senior, Mabel, and a returning graduate student, Jochanan, came together. A first date in December, engagement in April 1957, marriage in July Now, 55 years later, a look back at the two very different worlds from which this pair sprung. Mabel was a California product, born in Berkeley, whose parents came from New York to the San Francisco Bay Area when her Navy father was transferred there in The family lived in Albany, a small city adjacent to Berkeley, where Mabel and her sister attended Albany public schools. They also attended religious school at Temple Sinai in Oakland and, later, the newly built Temple Beth-El in Berkeley. Mabel was an all-round student, involved in academics, sports and other extracurricular activities. She entered the University of California-Berkeley in 1952 where she earned a bachelor s degree in political science and a master s degree in library science. Jochanan was born in Magdeburg, Germany, and started school just as Hitler rose to power in Being the only Jewish child in a school of 800, he had his share of daily taunts and fights. Luckily, the family was offered a certificate by the Zionist Organization in Berlin (Jochanan s father had been a Zionist) for entry into Palestine. They had to leave Germany within seven days and arrived in In 1950, military service completed, he received a scholarship from the Institute of International Education in New York for study at the University of Oregon. He earned a bachelor s degree in chemistry there and a doctorate in biochemistry from the University of California-Berkeley. Their life stories now intertwined by marriage, that first year together was one of austerity as they both finished graduate study and worked part-time. In 1958, Jochanan began a post-doctoral appointment at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, and Mabel took a librarian position at the University of Tel-Aviv. Then in 1960, the couple relocated to Indiana, Jochanan for a second postdoctoral appointment at Purdue University in Lafayette and Mabel for a librarian-teacher position in Dayton, a small town nearby. In 1963, Jochanan was hired by Western Michigan University s Chemistry Department to build a Ph.D program in biochemistry, and Mabel joined the staff of the Kalamazoo Public Library. As soon as they arrived in Kalamazoo, they joined the Congregation of Moses. Both knew full well, from Mabel growing up in a town with three Jewish families and Jochanan growing up in Israel, that when Jews live in the Diaspora, and especially in a small Jewish community like Kalamazoo, it is very difficult to preserve Jewish continuity and identification without supporting, and participating in, the local Jewish community. After two years, they decided to make Kalamazoo their home for good. Since family was always very important to them, there were yearly trips to Berkeley and Tel Aviv to visit their parents. Other travel, in addition to these family visits, was also always a priority. Once each of their sons arrived (Ilan, 1970; Oron, 1980), they would be taken along, first the one, then both, as long as they lived at home. Mabel and Jochanan have many shared interests, such as theater, concerts and travel, and they have always been continued on next page PAGE 8
9 Getting To Know You (from previous page) there to support their sons in school and extracurricular activities. Additionally, each has pursued individual passions, such as photography for Jochanan and community involvement for Mabel. Over the years, both have been active in the Congregation of Moses, where they have served in many different capacities. Mabel served as a COM board member for 15 years, as well as Religious Activities Chair, Torah Fund Chair and Sisterhood board member. She also reorganized the COM library from chaos to the Dewey Decimal Classification system. Jochanan was secretary of the COM board, assistant treasurer, active in the Men s Club, and so on. Both were active Religious School supporters for the many years that their children were enrolled. Mabel has been an active member of our Hadassah chapter for 50 years. Both Mabel and Jochanan have been active in the Kalamazoo Jewish Federation: Jochanan was one of the Federation s founders and chaired the UJA (now UJC) campaign for many years. He also served as Hillel adviser at WMU. Mabel served on the Federation s board and both have chaired the Israel Affairs Committee for more than three years and have been UJA, and now UJC, campaign solicitors for many years. Mabel was honored as Torah Fund Woman of Achievement, Jochanan for his Jewish Federation activities, and both have been honored by the State of Israel Bonds organization. They have had a very active retirement, with Jochanan authoring four books and Mabel continuing her involvement with both the Jewish community and the larger Kalamazoo community. Jochanan and Mabel continue to make one big trip each year and hope for many more good years to come. 11 In the wake of the tragedy in Newtown, Conn., January 5-6 was declared a National Sabbath to Stop Gun Violence by an organization called Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Faiths United Against Gun Violence (endorsed by the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism). Rabbi Spivak found the following prayer, written by Rabbi Naomi Levy, and it was read at our Shabbat morning service on January 5. A Prayer of Healing From the Tragedy in Newtown Our hearts are breaking, God, As our nation buries innocent children and brave teachers. The loss is overwhelming. Send comfort and strength, God, to grieving parents, To siblings, family and friends in this time of shock and mourning. Shield them from despair. Send healing to the schoolchildren who are lost and frightened Whose eyes witnessed unfathomable horrors. Ease their pain, God, Let their fears give way to hope. Let their cries give way once more to laughter. Bless us, God, Work through us. Turn our helplessness into action. Teach us to believe that we can rise up from this tragedy With a renewed faith in the goodness of our society. Shield us from indifference And from our tendency to forget. Open our hearts, open our hands. Innocent blood is calling out to us to act. Remind us that we must commit ourselves to prevent further bloodshed With all our hearts and souls. Teach us perseverance and dedication. Let us rise up as one in a time of soul-searching and repair So that all children can go to school in peace, God, Let them be safe. God of the brokenhearted, God of the living, God of the dead, Gather the souls of the victims Into Your eternal shelter. Let them find peace in Your presence, God. Their lives have ended But their lights can never be extinguished. May they shine on us always And illuminate our way. Amen. President s Message Please join me in making sure your voice is heard at a local and national level by contacting your state and federal representatives. Please do not let the conversation die. Also, please consider joining the following organizations to show your support for gun control: The Brady Campaign; and Americans for Responsible Solutions, newly formed by Gabrielle Giffords and Mark Kelly. Finally, Tu B Shevat was celebrated on January 26. Hadassah is planting a grove of trees in Israel in memory of the children and adults of Sandy Hook Elementary School. 12 Rabbi s message Small but strong! That s a good description of our Jewish community. We have many reasons to be proud of the Congregation of Moses, and the Religious School is at the top of the list. So a change of principals is a big event. All of us want to express enormous gratitude to Sue Welbourne, the outgoing principal (and excellent teacher for many years before). Through all her years of service to the school and synagogue, she has always remained the teacher who has the best interests of her students foremost among her concerns. And we are happy to know that Susan Katz-Scheinker will be assuming this important role beginning February 10. She has impressive experience in Jewish communal life and as an administrator and organizational leader. Join us in honoring both Sue Welbourne and Susan Katz-Scheinker at Friday services on February 8, beginning at 7 pm. Rabbi Harvey Spivak From Bible to Synagogue: How Judaism Became the Religion We Know Today One of the most significant changes in Judaism after biblical times was the development of the Diaspora. For the Prophets, being outside the biblical homeland had been considered punishment for sins. Yet during this era Jews were thriving throughout the Hellenistic-Roman world and in the Fertile Crescent as well. How did this development give new meaning to Jewish identity? In what ways did the actions and attitudes of Jews in those days set the pattern for modern times? From Bible to Synagogue features a lecture by Professor Isaiah Gafni of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, recognized around the world as a leading authority on Judaism during Second Temple times. This period was second only to the Bible itself in forming Judaism into the religion that we know and live today. SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. SOFEN LEARNING CENTER 269 PAGE 12
13 A COM Social Committee event Sunday Feb. 24 at 2 pm Farmers Alley Theatre THE WHIPPING MAN An extraordinary tale of loyalty, deceit and deliverance. It is Passover 1865, and the Civil War has just ended. Caleb DeLeon, a badly wounded Jewish Confederate soldier, returns home from the battlefield to find that his family has fled to the countryside and his family home is in ruins. Remaining in the city mansion are Simon and John, two former slaves who were raised as Jews in the DeLeon home. With Passover upon them, the three men unite to celebrate the holiday, even as they wrestle with their shared past relationship as master and slave, digging up long-buried family secrets along the way. Slavery and war, they discover, warp even good men's souls. A special Talk Back focusing on black and Jewish relations after the Civil War will follow the Feb. 24 performance. Panel participants will be Rabbi Spivak and a scholar of black history (to be announced). TICKETS: $22 To reserve tickets, bring/mail a check payable to Congregation of Moses to the synagogue by February 1. Write "Whipping Man" on the memo line of your check. 15 Marvin and Rosalie Okun Religious School FEBRUARY Sunday, Feb. 3 Wednesday, Feb. 6 Friday, Feb. 8 Sunday, Feb. 10 Wednesday, Feb. 13 Sunday, Feb. 17 Saturday, Feb. 23 Sunday, Feb. 24 Purim activities important dates to remember Decorate shalach manot boxes Community Shabbat dinner, 6 pm; service led by 5th grade, with songs, poems, prayers led by 1st grade; special "Shalom Oneg" for the principals Bake hamantashen, fill shalach manot boxes Finish shalach manot boxes Purim plays and songs, 11:30 am; lunch and carnival, 12 noon; delivery of shalach manot boxes to congregants Megillah reading No school midwinter break The students and teachers in the Religious School would like to thank the parents who sent fruits for the students to enjoy at our Tu B'Shevat seder in January. Every year we continue the ancient Jewish tradition of conducting a Tu B'Shevat seder by holding one of our own during Religious School. We appreciate the understanding of our students of the importance of this tradition. Morah Gillian always provides us with meaningful prayers and songs to honor this mitzvah of celebrating the holiday of the trees. This year she led kindergarten through 6th grade in songs and prayers, and students in each grade gave creative presentations, which taught us all the importance of trees in the world. G-d's greatest gift to the Jewish people was the Torah, which is compared to the Tree of Life. Just as the Torah is like the Tree of Life, it is also true that many forms of life are dependent upon trees. The tree is also a symbol for a family. The roots symbolize our traditions, and the branches are our children and grandchildren. Come enjoy our annual Purim lunch and carnival! Join us on Sunday, February 17, begining at 12 noon for a Purim lunch sponsored by USY and prepared by the Men's Club and for games provided by USY. Lunch will feature hot dogs, baked beans, chips and juice, and we'll also enjoy hamantashen baked by our Religious School students with help from Beth Grode and USY. The price for lunch is $20 per family, $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Game tickets will cost 25 cents for one or five tickets for $1. Everybody is encouraged to come in costume. Come join the fun! Please keep an eye on the weather and Newschannel 3 for information about Religious School closings. I will call all families to let you know if we are closing school. Two eight-week courses will be offered: LITTLE BOOKS, BIG VOICES: FOUR MINOR PROPHETS with Rabbi Gail Diamond Join us for a look into some of the lesser known treasures of the Tanach. Habbakuk, Zephaniah, Joel and Haggai prophesied during turbulent times. These small books, part of the Twelve Minor Prophets (Trei Asar), highlight the challenges of the period surrounding the destruction of the first Temple and the beginning of the second Temple. But the sages taught that all the prophecies that were preserved in the Tanach also contain lessons for future generations, and lessons for our lives are to be found too in the big voices of these four prophets. GENDER & JUDAISM with Shoshana Cohen This class will be an exploration of the points at which feminism meets traditional Judaism. We will touch on a range of topics including halacha, Biblical and Rabbinic studies, theology through the distinct and overlapping prisms of traditional textual analysis and feminist theory. We will examine traditional sources for explicit and implicit concepts and biases about gender. In discussion, we will explore the extent to which these traditional concepts apply in our contemporary lives and how they impact our sense of Judaism, the world and ourselves.
