This has been a very active and involved two months as President of the Congregation. Since my last article, we celebrated the Bat Mitzvah of Sara Torres. Camp Keshet was well attended and enjoyed by our younger youth, and organized by Beth Grode with the help from several parents. The Camp was enhanced by the participation of two young women from Israel, hosted by the Grode and One of the things we are most proud of about the Congregation of Moses is the participation by members in leading services. And nothing makes us prouder than seeing members chanting the Torah and Haftarah readings on Shabbat. People who have made Davis-Rosenthal families. Several of our members and some of their teenage children are now in Israel, and we wish them a good trip and homecoming. The Congregation Board has made several noteworthy decisions, which I want to address at this time. The Board is seeking your support of these decisions and welcomes feedback. Seating at the High Holiday has been changed to open seating. It has been apparent that with our lower number of members, the sanctuary during the High Holidays has looked quite sparse. 6 Sisterhood Dear Members, RUMMAGE SALE: We are now planning for our Sunday and Monday, August 30th and 31 st Rummage Sale. Emily Hoffman is in charge of this important fundraising event. We are accepting donations of new and gently used clothing, furniture, jewelry, collectibles, and household items from our COM members. Donations can be dropped off at the Synagogue Monday, August 24 th through, Friday, August 28 th. You can make arrangements with Rod Anderson, the Facilities Manager, if you need to drop off donations prior to August 24 th. Every dollar we make directly benefits the Marvin and Rosalie Okun Religious School. We are in need of volunteers to help with the Rummage Sale set-up and sale. It is a huge job. We welcome your help anytime during the week of set-up and on the Sunday and Monday of the sale. If you can help during Religious School or in the afternoon we would really appreciate it. It takes a lot of hands and some strong backs. The busiest day of the sale will be Sunday morning, August 30 th. We will also need volunteers to help put everything away on Monday, August 31 st after 3:00 p.m. Please call or Emily Hoffman. 8 President s Message continued Despite requests from the Bima to move forward, members were reluctant to do so, and the sanctuary remained empty. It was decided therefore, that by having open seating the membership would sit within the sanctuary making our community more cohesive. The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism President s Information List serve, indicates that many synagogues have open seating. Members who would prefer to remain in previously reserved seats need only to arrive early enough to use those same seats. Of course, special provisions will still be available for any member with special seating needs. It was with great deliberation that the Board has approved another change. The Board voted to increase the cost of High Holiday seats to $65, an increase of $15 per ticket. None of the long standing members asked could recall any increase over the past years. Charging for seating is indeed an in-house fundraiser. It should not come as a surprise that the increase was necessary considering the dire financial condition of COM. Another financial incentive is that with open seating, the cost of printing individual tickets with not be needed. It is hoped that the membership will recognize the needs for this decision. The Futures Committee, which has been responsible for reviewing policies, has established a Bylaws revision committee, under the leadership of Mike Tenenbaum. The previous By-laws were revised in August 1979 and amended in 2002 and 2006 and needed updating. The By-laws Committee has been meeting for countless hours these past three years reviewing each word. The Board reviewed the revisions at the July meeting,. A follow-up Committee meeting later that week reviewed comments made by Board members and Trustees. The newly revised By-laws will be reviewed and submitted to the entire membership for acceptance at the special Membership meeting on Sunday, August 23 rd at 10:30AM. The Membership meeting will be followed by a training session for Board members. We also welcome any member who is interested in assuming a leadership role in the community in the future. The Congregation has some fun activities scheduled in August. The Social Committee along with the Financial Committee is organizing a Family Fun BBQ Block Party Sunday, August 9 th. We are hoping our entire community will be able to participate and enjoy this community fundraising event. We look forward to celebrating the Bar Mitzvah of Ethan Rocklin on August 22 nd. Later this month Sisterhood takes on the giant task of the Rummage Sale. Some of the proceeds of this fund raiser are used to support the Marvin and Rosalie Okun Religious School. Recently I attended a Healing Service conducted by Rabbi Spivak on a Friday evening. I truly found the service healing, relaxing, and spiritual. Participating in this service and others has helped me feel at peace. I recommend this service and all of our Shabbat Services to our members. Happy summer everyone! Important Dates to remember: Ethan Rocklin Bar Mitzvah is Friday, August 21 st and Saturday, August 22 nd. Sisterhood rummage sale is Sunday and Monday, August 30 and 31 st. (Some of the money from this sale helps run the religious school.) The first day of Religious School will be Sunday, September 13 th. CALLING ALL FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN AGED 3 TO 5. If you have a child aged 3, 4, or 5 and they are ready for Sunday School, we want to know. We are hoping to have a class for our younger children, but we need to know who they are and how many. The children do need to be potty trained and able to go to the bathroom by themselves. We will also be interested in parent helpers in the classroom, so if you are able to do that, please let us know as well. If you or anyone you know has a child in this age range, please me at Morahrakefet@gmail.com and leave me the parent s name and phone number or address and the child s name as well. Tuition and school information will be in the September bulletin as well as ed to all families already registered with the school. Please do not hesitate to me with any questions that you have. I try to be in the office on Tuesday mornings, so you can call the synagogue as well. Formal registration for students will be on Sunday, September 13 th. We are collecting Box Tops for Education to help raise funds for the school. This is a very easy way to help that anyone can do. Collect the Box Tops for Education logo from packages that you purchase (Betty Crocker and others that carry it) and bring them to synagogue with you and put them in the box marked for them by the office door. The more you bring in, the more money the school makes. If you have any questions, please call Tamara Norman or me. Thanks for all of your help. 10

There are two funds that accept donations to support the school: the Marvin & Rosalie Okun Religious School Fund (the school s general fund) and the Bryna Graff Fund (helps fund professional development for religious school staff). 14 Israel Affairs Gilad Shalit was kidnapped in June 2006 by Palestinian militants in a cross border raid from the Gaza Strip on the crossing Kerem Shalom (in Israel) and has been held hostage by Hamas since. According to B Tselem organization "international humanitarian law absolutely prohibits taking and holding a person by force in order to compel the enemy to meet certain demands, while threatening to harm or kill the person if the demands are not met", so holding him is a war crime. Shalit's denied access to Red Cross visitation is also a violation of international law. The web site: contains a petition that calls on the United States government to make its $300 million humanitarian aid pledge to the people of Gaza, conditional upon the Hamas leadership releasing Gilad Shalit. 16 THE FORBIDDEN ZONE KASHRUT 101 Number 1 It is indeed difficult to navigate the supermarket shelves with kashrut in mind, if the concept of keeping kosher is a foreign one. The act of observing and maintaining kashrut can be both daunting, and even overwhelming, at times. I have been asked to write an article which will assist our congregants in knowing what foods may and may not be brought into the synagogue. I am terribly unqualified to compose a single article which would accomplish this task. There is simply too much information to digest. Therefore, I will submit articles in a series of installments, so as to minimize the amount of new information given at one time. To that end, let s begin with a few ground rules of kashrut. Ground Rules within the FORBIDDEN ZONE: -- If the food(s) in question contain both dairy and meat ingredients together, then it is FORBIDDEN. -- If the food(s) in question were prepared with or themselves contain any traces of pork or other nonkosher meat, then it is FORBIDDEN. -- If the food(s) in question were prepared with or themselves contain any traces of shellfish or other nonkosher fish, then it is FORBIDDEN. -- If the meat involved did not come from a kosher butcher, and the meat involved was not slaughtered in accordance with the ritual laws of kashrut, then it is FORBIDDEN. -- If the food(s) in question were prepared under non-kosher circumstances, in a non-kosher kitchen, where non-kosher meats have been previously cooked, where dairy and meat are not kept separate and appropriately designated dairy and meat utensils were not used, then it is FORBIDDEN. (This would include both residential and commercial kitchens.) These are the rules for raw foods. We have one additional ground rule within the FORBIDDEN zone. The rule is: -- All foods which are packaged or processed must bear a hechscher or they may not be brought into the Synagogue. What in the world is a hechscher, you ask? More on that in future installments. So what do I do with this information? What does this mean? Here is some practical usage. To the best of my knowledge, we have absolutely NO kosher restaurants in Kalamazoo or the surrounding areas. So, if there is food that you have purchased, with the intent to consume it fast food style, please don t bring it into the synagogue prior to consumption. This would include cups of coffee too. We cannot oversee the cleaning practices of these restaurants which are preparing non-kosher meat products. Therefore we must assume that the coffee pots/accessories are washed along with the non-kosher meat utensils, and subsequently should not be brought into our synagogue. Now, every rule seems to come, complete with an exception, firmly affixed to its side. The exception to the above is, Sweetwater s Donut Mill. They have no meat or meat by-products anywhere on their premises. Since these are the very items which determine a product s kosher status, their absence paves the way for the Rabbi Spivak/C.O.M. Good Kosher Housekeeping Seal of Approval! So, in short, Sweetwater s doughnuts and coffee may be consumed in our synagogue. 16

18 Special By-Laws Meeting Very soon if not already, you will be receiving electronic or hard copies of the revised COM By-Laws, proposed for adoption at the Special Meeting called for August 23, This process has been going on for literally almost a dozen years, with culmination coming during A Work Group was established to prepare proposed new COM By-Laws. Well over 350 hours have been spent recently to review and consider options for inclusion, prepare a revision and then go over it line-by-line, word-by-word to prepare a document to present for the Board of Directors to review. With that behind us now, the rest is up to each of you. We recognize that most of you are not well versed in by-laws. None of us were either. Therefore, we have prepared a series of brief documents for you to read before you go through what is proposed. These documents will greatly assist in your understanding the basics of what by-laws are about, what they typically include and how they are generally used. The other documents relate to a couple of new concepts included in the proposed revisions. This additional information will answer many of the questions you might have. Our suggestion for review of the proposed By-Laws for your adoption, is to print out both the current set of COM By-Laws and the Proposed COM By-Laws. set them side by side and follow each Article and Section. You will find many additions to the new version not found in the old. Almost all of these stemmed from member input, comparison of revisions passed at other similar sized Conservative congregations and many long nights with incredible discussions we wish all of you could have been able to listen to. What is most important is that you now, PLEASE, READ THESE MATERIALS BEFORE THE MEETING OF THE 23RD. We are attempting to pass by-laws that can take us well into this century. We want you to each be a part of this action. We look forward to seeing you at 10:30 am on Sunday the 23rd. 18

We have been busy soliciting Jewish owned business and members who have a service that can benefit from sponsoring an ad in our Bulletin. We need more sponsorships if we are to continue this format. If you would like to help you can make a donation to the Bulletin by sponsoring a page or two. We will publish the names of those who are able to contribute. A one page sponsorship is $18.00 A two page sponsorship is $36.00 You could sponsor a particular page or pages such as the ones suggested below or just a page in general.
