1 C O N G R E G A T I O N O F M O S E S Volume 1, Issue 1 January 1, 2009 Bulletin President s Message As we approach the secular new year, we can say without a doubt that we live in very interesting and challenging times. In just the last few months, an unprecedented election and meltdown of economic markets are only 2 of many world-wide events of note. Here in Kalamazoo, we have all felt the impact of the economic crisis. And yet life goes on. We can only hope and pray that 2009 will see a return to stability and smoother sailing for those who are trying desperately to 1 make ends meet, whether at home, in their businesses, or in the governmental and non-profit agencies that serve our community. One of the things that attracted me to Kalamazoo nearly 30 years ago was a special community pride and a palpable can-do attitude when it comes to education, the arts, health care, social services, and many other core basics required for an inspired quality of life. We have a lot of that same pride and feeling of ownership when it comes to the From the Rabbi Inside this issue: Calendars 2 Sisterhood News 6 Men s Club News 7 Religious School 10,11 Rabbi s Class Schedule 15 Sponsorships 17 Yartzeit 19 Congregation of Moses, and it is one of the reasons I have gradually become more involved in our synagogue s various activities over the years. We have a strong, resilient core of committed, engaged people determined to maintain and improve our synagogue home, so that it can become even warmer and more nurturing for all who seek solace, social interaction, religious knowledge and spiritual renewal. (continued on pg. 8) Here are some of the things that we may abhor about the terrorists who struck in India last month: they are murderers, they purposely kill innocents, they tortured some of their victims before killing them, they are anti-semites, they dedicated themselves to a radicalized ideology that makes war against anyone who will not submit themselves to them. There is yet another thing that is detestable about them: they force us to think about war. (continued pg.18) I d be glad to print your photos of Synagogue events. 6 Sisterhood Registration required for the following great programs: Lee Tregerman will share all at the cheesecake demonstration to take place on Sunday, January 25 th beginning at 9:30 in the Congregation of Moses kitchen. In an attempt to accommodate as many people as possible and to cut down on confusion, we have decided that this should be a demonstration instead of a workshop. It will end with cheesecake tasting and you will take home his recipes. There will be no charge. A minimum of ten people is required. Please or call Valerie (info below) to register no later than Thursday, January 15th. Want to make your own tallit or chalah cover? Join us on Sunday, February 15 th for a fabulous workshop led by Shannon Dion and Shirley Wise and learn how to paint on silk. You will go home with your own beautifully painted kosher tallit and/or challah cover. The workshop will take place beginning at 1:00 p.m. in the Social Hall. There will be a charge of approximately $10 to $15 depending on your project. We reserve the right to adjust this fee based on the price of materials. You must register no later than Monday, January 12 th so that we can place the order for silk and paint. Please contact Valerie to register. Payment will be due on Feb 15 th. We will need a minimum of 11 participants. The Chanukah Bazaar was a success this year and we appreciate everyone s support. Just a reminder that there are still great buys in the Shop. You can call Candi Levene at if you need something from the Store on a day when we are not open. The store will be open on Sundays from 9:30 to noon during the months of January and February whenever Religious School is in session. Thank you to Kim Rubin and Candi Levene for their outstanding work. Also, thank you to: Shirley Wise, Emily Hoffman, Judy Davidoff, Judy Davis Rosenthal, Joyce Camhi, Marian Fisher, Betty Hirschfield and Elizabeth Ellison for their help. 8 President s Message continued Our Community Shabbat dinners and services led by our Religious School students are but one example of the vibrancy of our shul. May all of the young children who so inspire us with their enthusiasm for Jewish life and learning, continue to enjoy the fine facilities given to us by several generations of farsighted congregants. Many of you have made a generous pledge or commitment to the Building Fund Campaign. To date we have nearly $400,000 pledged over the next 5 years, toward a goal of 1.2 million. Many of the renovations and improvements will improve our energy efficiency, reduce water, gas and electric power usage, and add warmth and comfort to our synagogue building. We recently replaced or upgraded all the windows and skylights in the building, and it has made a noticeable difference already. The next time you are in the sanctuary or social hall, check out the old stained glass windows over the doors on the Stadium Drive side of the building. The old plastic which protected these works of art was yellowed and cracked. The new storm windows have allowed the true colors of the glass to show, and they look wonderful. Thanks to Mike Tenenbaum for shepherding this project to completion, and to those who donated so generously to make it happen. Blackberry Systems did a great job with the windows and skylights and I would highly recommend their services. We will soon be at the point of assessing what additional projects we will be able to accomplish with the donations and pledges we have received. I strongly urge you to make a generous (and taxdeductible) donation or pledge to the best of your ability if you have not already done so. Please call or me if you have any questions about this vital project. My deep personal thanks goes to all who have given so generously of themselves and their resources in the past. May the blessing of your kindness inspire others to give and to serve in the future. Ken Goodman, President 8

9 Library News 2009 COM Library Hours 9:30am 11:30am 9 Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday 9:30am 12:00 pm 4:00pm 6:00pm Books, books, DVDs, books, and more books! That s what is in store for January 2009! As I write this in late December 2008, I am about to begin my semi-annual book-buying spree for the Library. I ve been amassing my wish list for the past six months, and you re going to see some wonderful, new adult and children s titles (and maybe a DVD or two!). These new books would not be possible without the support many of you showed during the Used Book Sale. Thanks again for trudging out on such a snowy day. I m happy to say that despite the weather, the Library did remarkably well, allowing us to buy much of what you ll see in January. That doesn t mean that we don t need your continued support. There are some bar and bat mitzvah celebrations coming up. How about donating a few books or the amount they are worth to the Library? In lieu of decorative flowers, you could place books on the bima or reception table and then deliver them to the Library. I would then place a bookplate in each book honoring the bar/bat mitzvah. The same can be done for birthdays and other occasions. As always, we are grateful for any donation to the Herman and Rose Fisher Library Fund. We also need a new or used couch to replace the tattered one currently in the Library. Of course, we are always pleased to accept donations of Jewish books, CDs, or DVDs in good condition. Todah Rabah! See you in the Library, Rachel Haus Library Director Reminder The Annual Calendar Update Meeting is Wednesday, January 7th at 7pm in the Sofen Room. All Chairs of Committees and Heads of Organizations who will be scheduling events involving CoM congregants should plan to attend or send a representative. We will all meet together in a collegial atmosphere with everyone having equal opportunities to select optimal dates for activities. We cannot avoid all conflicts/overlaps, but we can minimize them and arrive at a satisfactory compromise in most cases. Please come prepared with 2-3 alternative dates/times for major events. Eliza Siegel

10 Religious School Rosalie and Marvin Okun Religious School Shalom everyone! Important Dates to remember: Classes resume on Tuesday, January 6 th. Our next Community Dinner is Friday, January 23 rd. 5 th and 6 th grades will be leading services, and preschool, kindergarten, and High school, as well as other community members will be preparing dinner. Dinner is at 6:30 p.m. and services at 7:30 p.m. If you are able to help with dinner, please contact Jenna Verne. We are collecting Box Tops for Education to help raise funds for the school. This is a very easy way to help that anyone can do. Collect the Box Tops for Education logo from packages that you purchase (Betty Crocker and others that carry it) and bring them to synagogue with you and put them in the box marked for them by the office door. The more you bring in, the more money the school makes. If you have any questions, please call Tamara Norman or me. Thanks for all of your help. The religious school appreciates all donations. There are two funds that accept donations to support the school: the Okun Fund (the school s general fund) and the Bryna Graff Fund (helps fund professional development for religious school staff). I want to thank everyone who has made donations so far this year. Your help and generosity is truly appreciated! For those kind souls that wish to donate supplies, here are some items that we will need throughout the school year: 10

11 Hand sanitizer and tissues are a real need, so if anyone is so inclined, we could really use these! 1. Kosher Snacks and juice 2. Tissues (Kleenex) 3. Hand sanitizer and cleaning wipes 4. Used laser printer cartridges (we can redeem at Office Depot and receive credit towards copier paper and other supplies) 5. Non Hanukah Jewish decorations If the school needs other specific items, we will post them on a wish list outside of the Religious School Office or make a plea in the bulletin. Thank you for your support!! If you have any questions for me, please me at MorahRakefet@gmail.com or leave a message at the COM Religious School Office and I will return your call as soon as possible. Thank you in advance for all of your help and support for the coming year! Morah Rakefet 11

12 Jewish Theological Seminary The Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) held its first class of ten rabbinical students in 1887 at New York's oldest synagogue, the Spanish-Portuguese Congregation Shearith Israel. Today, JTS is a comprehensive institution of Jewish education, encompassing five schools and offering undergraduate and graduate programs in many fields of Judaic studies. JTS is one of North America's most prestigious centers of Jewish learning and the academic and spiritual center of Conservative Judaism worldwide. For over a century, JTS has inspired and trained religious leaders who have a command of our sacred texts, are sensitive to the changing needs of the Jewish community, and are able to impart spiritual meaning to generations of Jews. Please support the Jewish Theological Seminary with your purchase of cards. Special offer --purchases--20 cards for $36.00 Cards may be purchased by contacting Tema Lando Israel Affairs Gilad Shalit remains a prisoner in Gaza. As of today corporal Shalit has been held for 910 days. During this period he has not once been visited by the Red Cross. The human rights and peace NGO s have been silent. Over 10,000 rockets and mortar rounds have fallen on Sderot and its surrounding communities; 7000 of them since Israel forcibly expelled the Jews of the Gaza communities as part of it s withdraw from occupied lands Jewish population of the West Bank continues to soar. The JTA ( Jewish Telegraphic Agency) reports that according to Israel papers, the growth is three times that of the rest of Israel. The median age of Jews living in the West bank is 20.6 compared to 28.7 for all Israelis. The Younger residents of the West bank are also having more children. There were 270,000 Jewish residents as of 2007(excluding Jerusalem). In a recent poll, 92 % of the West Bank Jews described themselves as happy with their lives vs. 84% of the rest of Israel. Netanyahu s Likud leads in polls. Election polls taken in Mid December give Likud seats, Kadima 20-28, and Labor in the 120 seat parliament. Polls give a Likud-led right wing-religious bloc an absolute majority over any other coalition. The JTA reports that Kadima s 2005 disengagement from Gaza is considered a dismal failure because of continued rocket attacks. That plus the debacle of the 2006 war in Lebanon have weakened that party. 12

Subbotnik Jews: Nearly 200 years ago a group of Russian peasants converted to Judaism. During the period of the First Aliyah 120 years ago, large numbers of Subbotnik Jews moved to Israel, and were soon playing a major role in settling the land. Moshe Yaish Nahari a Jewish resident of the city of Rida was murdered in broad daylight at the local market. According to eyewitnesses a Muslim first shouted Jew accept the message of Islam! and then opened fire with an AK 47. Since then heads of Yemen s Jewish community received death threats and grenades and firebombs have been thrown at Jewish homes.. 13

14 What s Going On With Friday Night Services? Friday services, including what time they should begin, seems to be a hot topic at the Congregation of Moses. Many people responded to the recent survey and let us know their favorite starting times. Based on the responses, we ve decided to move the start to. Respondents to the survey also urged us to establish a consistent time. Beginning Friday services at different times for different occasions is not popular with our membership. Also, many of you want to use the time after services for socializing. You ve missed that while we experimented with an early service time. So, when do Friday services begin? Starting January 2, all Friday night services will begin at 7:30. It will be the same for all occasions bar and bat mitzvahs, family services led by the Religious School, Sisterhood and Men s Club Shabbat, etc. What else is new about Friday services? We are one community and work together toward common goals, but we are also a diverse group. People at our synagogue are looking for differing ways to connect with Judaism and enrich their spiritual lives. So we are offering variations on the theme of Friday services. They won t all be the same. Here are some features that we will be offering on different Fridays. The calendar will let you know which feature is being offered each week: Singing Shabbat songs ( zemirot ) have been a popular feature of our services in the past year. They will be part of most of our Friday services and will be especially featured about once a month. Sermon I will offer a relevant, concise sermon that amplifies a lesson of the Torah. 14

18 From the Rabbi CONTINUED The good people in our society want to have nothing to do with perpetrating evil, especially war. This is something to admire, but this fine trait makes it difficult for us to so much as honestly recognize that adherents of the terrorists jihadist ideology are at war with us. The terrorists force us to think about fighting, and that itself is an injury to us. God gave Noah the first and most basic law: murder must be punished. Whoever sheds man s blood, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God was man made. This kind of justice is fundamental for society. The difficulty is that it requires us, as a society, to make our hands bloody in the execution of justice. Human life is sacred, but at the same time we are ordered to destroy human life in the process of justice, and so society assumes a degree of blood guilt. So the terrorists are guilty of, among other things, forcing us to get our hands dirty with the nasty business of defending civilization against them. We may count that among their atrocities. Finally, however, it is our responsibility to confront them, seek elementary justice for those whom they have murdered, and protect our ever-fragile civilization against further jihadist terror. Rabbi Harvey Spivak The Rabbi s Recognition Certificate goes to. MIM BROT The certificate thanks Mim for the countless times she has cooked, baked, served, worked on committees and otherwise contributed to the success of many projects, religious activities and social events. The Congregation of Moses is grateful for her many contributions to our community. Todah Rabbah! 18
