1 C O N G R E G A T I O N O F M O S E S N E E D S Y O U Volume 3 Issue 5 May 1, 2011 Nisan-Iyar 5771 Bulletin President s Message Dear Congregants, It is with a heavy heart as I write my May Bulletin Message to you. I am deeply saddened by the loss of Ruth Lando. We have been blessed to have had Ruth in our community. She has been a mentor to so many of us with her wisdom, insight, compassion, sense of humor, and unquestionable dedication to the local Jewish Community, Israel, Hadassah and the Jewish Community around the world. I send my condolences to her family. We have also been saddened in the past months by the loss of several other gracious women in our community: Bea Sichel, Lillian Sofen, and Vivian Pollack. I cannot help but be reminded of how the Jewish faith honors the various life stages we all experience and how the Congregation unites to support our members through these stages. I like to think of the Congregation as an extended family to those whose families are not near. We can always strive to improve this value. Personally, I am experiencing two of these life stages. The recent retirement of my husband, Frank, and the upcoming college graduation of our daughter, Juleah, is new territory for me. My daughter s graduation will be the beginning of her becoming self sufficient and my needing to adjust to the empty nest. Another transition for me is that my Presidency of the Congregation is rapidly coming to a close. It has been a rewarding two years, serving as your President. I will save my final comments for the June Bulletin. The Annual Meeting of the Congregation of Moses is on April 27 th. I hope to see many of you there. It is a time to learn about our accomplishments of the past year and vote for the new Officers and Board members, as well as a time to meet and greet each other. There is no Board meeting in May. Instead there is the yearly installation of officers of the Board, Sisterhood, Men s Club, and USY during the Friday night service on June 10 th. I am hoping for a good turn out for this special service and evening. The Religious School will have its culminating Spring Picnic on May 22. A plaque honoring Bea Sichel, now in the Library, will be dedicated after Shabbat Services on May 7 th. The Religious School Committee will recognize its teachers at the Friday night service on May 13. I hope you had a good Passover. Shalom, Shirley M. 11 Library News By the time you read this, the school year will be winding down. This has been an exciting year with many twists and turns, especially for the Library. Last fall, we weren t sure if we d have a book budget, necessitating the Adopt-A-Book program. That program was a success and got us through the winter, but then the Library was officially adopted by COM. Now we can look to the future with strength and vitality. Last year saw the inauguration of the COM Kids Jewish Reading Challenge. Some kids were really into it, others not so much, and last fall I could only hope that this year the interest would at least not wane. Instead, it exploded! Just stop by the Library and see the cornucopia of leaves sprouting from our reading tree. We have not one, but three clear winners of the grand prize and many other runners-up (whose names will be announced on the last day of Religious School). I want to thank all those who made monetary donations as well as those who donated books, DVDs, CDs, and periodicals to the Library. Our Library Heroes of the last few months are Ken Eisenberg, Janet Heller, and Ruth Lando (of blessed memory). Werner Sichel was especially generous in having a plaque dedicated to Bea placed in the Library. On top of everything, the library catalog is now online! Please check us out on the COM website (You may even request titles.) There will be many changes coming to the site, so stay tuned! If all this weren t enough, we are planning a library coming out party for Jewish Book Month next December. Plans are still being formed, but it promises to be fantastic! By the way, once Religious School ends, I will still be working in the Library for a couple of mornings during the week. By mid June, however, my hours will be erratic. Please call or for an appointment. Todah rabah, Rachel Haus, Library Director 11

14 Marvin and Rosalie Okun Religious School Important Dates to remember: Israel Independence Temple B nai Israel on May 6 There will be no Religious School on Mother s Day Teacher Appreciation event - flyer will be coming The last day of Religious School will be Sunday, May 22. Classes will start at 9:30 and there will be a celebration at 10:30 to noon The school will be in need of teachers for the coming year. Parents and community members have been some of our best teachers. If you have the time, we need you. If you are interested in teaching, please contact Joyce Camhi or me. We are collecting Box Tops for Education to help raise funds for the school. This is a very easy way to help that anyone can do. The more you bring in, the more money the school makes. If you have any questions, please call Tamara Norman, Liz Siegel or me. Liz is the new Box Tops Coordinator. Thanks for all of your help. Keep collecting those box tops over the summer! The Religious School appreciates all donations. There are two funds that accept donations to support the school: the Marvin and Rosalie Okun Fund (the school s general fund) and the Bryna Graff Fund (helps fund professional development for Religious School staff). It has been an honor and a mitzvah to work with the students and teachers in our Religious School this year. Thank you to all of the students, teachers, parents, the Religious School Committee, and volunteers for all of your help and support this year. Have a fantastic (and safe) summer Sincerely, Morah Sarah Susan Welbourne 14

16 Dear friends and fellow members of the Congregation of Moses, I am participating in the 2011 Photo Documentary Project sponsored by the Kalamazoo Valley Museum, along with a number of other photographers in the community. From March 5 - November 7 of this year, we will be photographing activities, events, places and people in the Kalamazoo community, which will become part of the Museum's archives for future historians. I am very excited to participate and contribute to the project. My intention is to document Jewish life and the Jewish community, and to that end I have already begun photographing events at the CoM, along with other events in the community, and will continue to do so until early November. The photographs will become the property of the Kalamazoo Valley Museum, and may be used for Museum exhibition as well as historical reference. The Museum is asking for as much detail as possible to be submitted with the photographs, so wherever possible I will be including people's names if their faces are visible in the photo. Please let me know if you do not want to be included, OR IF YOU DO NOT WANT YOUR CHILDREN TO BE INCLUDED, so that I can make sure that I do not submit photographs with your (or their) image. Also, as I begin to prepare the photographs for submission, I will contact you for a signed permission form if your child is in any of the photos, as this is a requirement for all children under 16. I invite you to me if you have questions about any of this. My address is carolyn@luckydogmedia.com. Carolyn Kennedy 16

18 Rabbi s Message We are making a change in how we read the names before Mourners Kaddish at the end of services. We have always read the yahrtzeits for the coming week the anniversary of when close relatives have died. Now we will also read the names of people who have died during the past year. The custom is to say Mourners Kaddish on three occasions: For 11 months following the date of death On the anniversary (yahrtzeit) During the Yizkor service We will read the names of Congregation of Moses members who have died within the past 11 months. We ll also add the names of relatives who are not Congregation members, if you would like. IF YOU WOULD LIKE US TO READ THE NAME OF YOUR NON-MEMBER RELATIVE before Mourners Kaddish, please let me know the name and the date of death. You can reach me at or avocet68@aol.com. Rabbi s Office Hours Phone or are often the most convenient ways of contacting me ( , avocet68@aol.com), but sometimes it s better to talk in person. I m usually in the office on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings and you are welcome to drop in unannounced. Sometimes meetings or other events may take me out of the office at those times, so before you make a special trip to the synagogue to talk to me, it s smart to call and be sure that I m there. People often make appointments to see me at other times if the usual office hours are inconvenient or if they want to be sure that I ll be there and expecting them. Rabbi Harvey Spivak 18

24 In Remembrance of Ruth Lando We have suffered a great loss this week with the passing of Ruth Lando. Many remember her as kind, gracious, wise, full of life, and much admired. May her name always be remembered as a blessing. In thinking back over what she has done in our community, it would have been shorter to list what she has not done. Ruth has been one of the driving forces behind the establishment, maintenance and sustenance of many of our shul organizations B nai B rith, Hadassah, Women s Division of United Jewish Appeal, and Israel Bonds. She also served on Sisterhood, the Committee of Soviet Jewry, United Synagogue Youth Advisor, the UJA Appeal, and a member of the Michigan Region of Anti Defamation League. More recently she has been a synagogue Trustee and has been on the Religious School Committee. Each year Ruth and Irving sponsored the Break-the-fast after Yom Kippur and more than forty years ago they started the B nai B'rith Scholar Athlete Awards, which continue as an annual event honoring the outstanding youth in our city. Ruth ran the Sisterhood Gift Shop for many years and was singled out as its Woman of Valor. Her home was truly a Jewish home filled with Judaica, Jewish art, walls filled with certificates that had been presented to her and Irving. A large library with hundreds of Jewish books and her subscriptions to many Jewish newspapers and magazines attested to her love of reading and Jewish knowledge. She was a faithful fan of MASH, Hogan s Heroes, and, yes, even Harry Potter. Whether you have been the recipient of Ruth s ing jokes and articles, or her mailing of birthday and anniversary cards, or her sincere inquiries of How are the kids? you know that she was always genuinely caring of other people. We all considered her our best friend. Over the years Ruth has volunteered in or been an advocate for the Cancer Center, March of Dimes, Cystic Fibrosis, and Planned Parenthood. We cherish the memory of Ruth Lando for her lifelong commitment to Israel and to Zionism. She has been the backbone of our Kalamazoo Jewish community and has been a friend, mentor and inspiration to us all. While many people spend their time seeking happiness, Ruth spent her time creating happiness. She did this by serving others, not out of self-interest or guilt or social conscience, but because there s nothing else she would rather do. So, pour yourself a cup of strong coffee, put on a Frank Sinatra recording, and reflect on some of the great memories you have of Ruth. Nan Goldenthal 24
