1 DESERT TORAH ACADEMY OHEL MENACHEM BS D Volume 18 Issue 5 December 23, 2016 Kislev ADMINISTRATOR S CORNER Rabbi Rodman, Principal We will soon be lighting the menorah in celebration of Chanukah. The candles of the menorah teach us a powerful lesson. We may not use their light for any mundane purpose, such as helping us to read a book. The candles are only lit to bring spiritual light to the world. Our Jewish neshama also came into this world to bring spiritual light to its surroundings. How does the soul do this? It is accomplished by learning Torah and performing mitzvos. Children who go to a Jewish day school have already started on this path. Their day is filled with Torah, good deeds and prayer. More importantly, since they are learning to bring light into the world at a young age, there is a much greater chance that they will grow up as adults who will do the same. There is one difference though, between a person and the Chanukah candles. Unlike the candles, people must be involved with the physical world. That is why we at DTA are so proud of our excellent secular studies. Our Aimswebb and Terra Nova scores show that our graduates will not only be ready to meet their spiritual responsibilities, but also take their place in the world as responsible and productive citizens. 2 Third Grade Secular Ms. Bernal What are we doing in 3rd grade? Too many things to list, so I will just mention the top 3. Third grade has begun to read to the Nursery and PK class every other week. They have learned to read aloud to their Reading Buddy. Every week the little ones are happy to see us and we are so happy to read to them. The reading time not only helps the 3rd graders have better fluency, but the little ones have a time that is just dedicated to them. Science is in full swing in class. The students are learning about Food Webs and Chains, habitats and environments, and how living things are classified by what they eat. The class is in the process of making their own food chain with the animals they choose. It is nice to hear that they understand the process and that some animals are not only predators but prey as well. Frindle! Is the novel they are reading in class. As they read the chapters aloud in class, they laugh, comment and answer questions from the pages. Their vocabulary has expanded. They are learning that reading can be fun as well as educational. Meet Ms. Bernal Who am I? First of all, my name is Sammie Denae Bernal. Sammie is not a nickname, it is not short of Samantha. I was named after my father, Sammy. I always felt my parents wanted a boy :). I am the eldest of four children. My entire family lives in California. My children, husband and I are the only ones that live in Las Vegas. We have lived in Las Vegas since What did I do when I was younger? I loved to play with Barbie dolls. I would lay out the entire playsets on the floor in my room. I would always cut my clothes to make my Barbie s clothes, which would always get me into trouble - but I still did it anyway. I loved being with my Nana (Grandmother). She taught me many things. While I was in high school, I was on the tennis team, wrote for the school newspaper, was in Leadership, ran track, was on the Drill Team. After graduating high school I went to college in Los Angeles. I was at an all-girl school-which I felt was a better place for me to strive. I was a part of the student government. After graduating I became a teacher. I taught middle school-ela until 2007, when I moved to Vegas. Fun thing you may not have known about me My husband and I were on the Newlywed game show in We won a trip to Kauai, Hawaii. I love my life and am glad it has run this path!

3 Fifth/Sixth Boys Judaic Rabbi Hayes The 5th and 6th boys Judaic class consists of three main subjects: Chumash, Yahadus (Jewish Law and philosophy), and Talmud. Chumash: In Chumash class we are learning the Parsha of Shemos which contains the story of the Jewish people's enslavement in Egypt and their redemption through Moshe. We are developing vocabulary and critical thinking skills as we journey through the texts. A highlight of the learning is using 21st century technology applications like quizlet and kahoot to enhance the learning and have review time in a fun way. Yahadus: In Yahadus class we have been learning the laws of Shabbat, including the laws of cooking and handling items that are not allowed on Shabbat (Muktzeh). At the conclusion of the learning the students had an opportunity to experience some hands-on learning as they spent a lesson in the school kitchen cooking and baking, with a demonstration of the way one is permitted and prohibited to handle food and cook on Shabbat. Talmud: In Talmud class the students are learning how to break down a Mishnah on their own. They are learning key vocabulary words, as well as the systems that the Mishnah uses to communicate on their own. Meet Rabbi Hayes Rabbi Hayes has spent the past ten years working in the field of Jewish education. He has worked in the design and implementation of various aspects of Judaic curriculum. He has helped to develop programs which integrate technology into Judaic studies. He has a Masters degree in Educational and Transformational Leadership, and an ICF Life Coach certification. Rabbi Hayes recently moved to Las Vegas, with his wife, Morah Chana (2nd grade) and their children, Devora Leah, Beila and Eliyahu.

(Students were told they were not allowed to say getting presents or gelt. ) Raizy Bogatin, Kindergarten My favorite part of Chanukah is playing with a dreidel. Chana Borsody, Fifth Grade My favorite part of Chanukah is going to all the celebrations in the community. Michael Cohen, Sixth Grade the menorah. Daniel Israel, Seventh Grade My favorite part of Chanukah is all the parties. Adena Sudranski, Third Grade My favorite part of Chanukah is eating latkes and lighting the menorah.. Binie Harlig, Eighth Grade I like Chanukah because of Pirsumei Nissa. It s all about spreading the light! Divrei Torah From The Fifth/Sixth Grade Boys Parshas Vayeishev Michael Cohen, Sixth Grade ולא זכר שר המשקים את יוסף וישכחהו "" Quote: The butler did not remember Yosef, and he forgot him Question: Why does it say he did not remember him and also he forgot? It could have just said he did not remember, or that he forgot. Answer: The answer is that when Yosef asked the butler for help, he realized that he should have had more faith that Hashem would help him. The pasuk therefore says that he forget referring to Yosef forgetting about relying on the butler and instead focusing his trust in Hashem. 5/6 Boys Chumash Aaron Kellman, Fifth Grade This year, in Chumash class we are learning Parshas Shemos. So far, we have learned that Moshe goes up to the area of Chorav otherwise known as the mountain of Hashem, There, Moshe sees a burning thorn bush, and an angel of Hashem appeared to him from its midst. Moshe realizes that the bush is not being consumed from the fire. Rashi explains that Hashem chose to use a thorn bush and not another tree, because thorns are painful and He wanted us to know that He is with us in our pain.

5 Cozy up this winter to some healthier-version of special treats Homemade Hot Cocoa 2 ½ cups milk (dairy or coconut/almond) Directions: Optional: 1 Tbsp maca powder (in nutrition aisle) 1) Stir all ingredients in a pot over low/low-medium 4 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder heat until heated through. Enjoy! Raw honey to taste (1-3 Tbsp) Pinch sea salt Oatmeal (Raisin) Cookies (Yield: about 30) Directions: 2 cups rolled oats 1) Preheat oven to 350. Place oats in medium sauce- ¾ cup plus 2 Tbsp spelt flour pan and toast over med-high heat, stirring frequently ½ tsp ground cinnamon until oats are slightly golden and fragrant, about 3 ¼ tsp ground nutmeg minutes. Remove from heat and stir in flour, salt, 1/8 tsp sea salt cinnamon, and nutmeg. ½ cup melted and cooled coconut oil 2) In separate bowl, whisk together oil, maple syrup, & ½ cup pure maple syrup vanilla until combined. Add this mixture to oat mix- 2 tsp pure vanilla extract ture and stir to combine completely. Dough will be Optional: raisins to taste warm. 3) Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto parchment-lined baking sheet. Gently flatten and bake until golden brown. Check cookies at 9 minutes, but they may need to cook up to min, depending on oven. Homemade Nutella Directions: 2 cups roasted hazelnuts 1) Puree the hazelnuts and ¾ cup of coconut milk in a food ¾-1 cup coconut milk processor until it forms a hazelnut butter ¼ cup pure maple syrup 2) Add maple syrup and cocoa powder. Pulse to combine. 3 Tbsp cocoa powder if desired (for richness and thickness), add in remaining ¼ cup of coconut milk and pulse to combine. Once this mixture is well-incorporated, puree on high until it s smooth and creamy. Store in fridge, and let sit out for 10 min to soften before using. HAPPY CHANUKAH TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILIES!
