1 Sharyn Blaustein Volume 22 Principal Issue 26 May 20, 2016 Iyar 12, 5776 Rabbi Yamin Levy LIHA Rabbi THE VOICE OF OUR CHILDREN A WEEKLY PUBLICATION Please visit our website for the FULL newsletter in color! Shalom My Friends, Parents and Supporters, Message from Rabbi Yamin Levy LIHA Rabbi The Parasha begins with the words: Emor, and Hashem said unto Moses, speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and speak unto them (Vayiqra 21:1). The Chakhamim ask why repeat the words speak unto them? They reply with a timeless message. The Torah repeats the words Speak Unto them in order to emphasize the importance of speaking appropriately to everyone even the simple people. How we speak to each other reflects so much about who we are and the quality of our character. At LIHA, character development, Midot is the most important thing that we teach. Excellence academically is worthless without good Midot. Next week is Lag Ba omer a celebratory time between Pesach and Shavu oth. The tradition has it that Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai came out of a cave on Lag Ba Omer. He spent 24 years running away from the Romans. During those years he lived miraculously and spent his time studying Torah. Like Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai the study of Torah today, while available, requires sacrifice and commitment. This is what we strive to achieve at LIHA. Tuition is difficult, especially when there are options that are free in our community. Yet we have to be strong and recommit ourselves to make whatever sacrifices necessary to educate our children so that Torah remains alive and well into the next generation. About 10 years ago the New York Times ran a lead article about a stenographer who retired after serving in the White House for over 40 years. He was asked which of the presidents he would rate the highest. President Truman was his immediate response. When asked why he responded by saying: Truman was the only president who knew who I was and bothered to call me by name. For this stenographer great people are remembered by the way they relate to the simple people. Shabbat Shalom Mishmar participants enjoyed an afternoon Rock Climbing on Thursday. Parashat Emor Shabbat Candle Lighting time is at 7:56 p.m. Havdalah time is at 9:02 p.m.
