3 MISSION STATEMENT BAYT finally has its first-ever statement of mission, value and vision. The statement is divided into three parts. The opening sentence is the mission the overarching goals of the organization. The middle section is the values or the means by which we will achieve our mission. These become the principal areas of focus for all BAYT activity and resources. The final paragraph is the vision what we hope will happen as a result of our dedication to our mission and values. BAYT MISSION STATEMENT DECEMBER 17, 2014 Recently adopted by the Board of Governors, the statement defines our purpose, principles and aspirations. The Shul is increasingly having to determine how much time and money which are both finite resources can be devoted to an ever-growing list of potential initiatives and programs. The mission statement will help define priorities and ensure that decisions are made based on enduring principles. BAYT is an inclusive shul community, committed to the principles of Orthodox Judaism, embracing G-d, Torah and Israel while inspiring spiritual growth. As a welcoming home to all Jews, we are committed to: Nurturing future Jewish generations Being a caring, sharing and ethical community Perpetuating Halacha as the basis for Jewish living Facilitating lifelong Jewish learning Enabling meaningful prayer imbued with joy Maintaining a strong connection to and support of the State of Israel Through our dedication to these principles we strive to positively influence the lives of individual Jews, to be a magnet for Jewish living and learning, a beacon among Orthodox shuls and a respected voice in and for the Jewish community.

4 INSIGHTS FROM THE RAV YIZKOR FOR OURSELVES Recently, I spoke in shul about Rabbi Moshe Avigdor Amiel ( ), the former chief rabbi of Tel Aviv, who was a great Gaon and leader in the pre-state days of Eretz Yisrael. Rav Amiel published his Derashos El Ami, a compilation of his sermons to his kehillos both in Antwerp and Israel. In one of his derashos, he notes that Yahrzeits are a big thing for Jews in his day. He was lamenting the disproportionate emphasis on death for those whose sole relationship with religion was based on sitting shiva or observing Yahrzeit. People are quite meticulous about observing Yahrzeits for their beloved parents and other relatives who meant so much to them and who enriched their lives immeasurably. This is all very important, notes Rav Amiel, but there s something even more important: Observing Yahrzeit for ourselves! You see, in Pirkei Avos (2:10), Rabbi Eliezer says to repent one day before you die. Since none of us know when we ll die, teshuva is an appropriate exercise every single day, since it may be our last. It turns out, then, that every day is a potential Yahrzeit for ourselves! And so, it s important to view each day as my own personal Yahrzeit, so that I can utilize today to the fullest, so that I can perform teshuva properly, and so that I can make peace with every single person. We say the Yizkor prayer with tremendous kavanah and feeling: Yizkor Elokim Nishmas, may Hashem remember the soul of my dearly departed. But the most important Yizkor for us to recite is the Yizkor over our own souls. Remember: How am I doing spiritually? Is my neshama soaring or sinking? It s easy to commemorate someone else s life. But there comes a time when we all have to turn inward and focus on saying Yizkor for ourselves. This may be the very reason why Yizkor is such an important feature of Yom Kippur. It s to remind us that these holy days are not only about remembering our dearly departed, but also about remembering ourselves and who we are in the process. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are known as the days when the Books of the Living and the Books of the Dead are open in front of Hashem (Talmud Rosh Hashanah 32b). Indeed, this is one of the reasons offered by the Midrash for saying Yizkor on Yom Kippur, because judgment and atonement take place on this day for the deceased as much as for those living. But perhaps the reason why the Gemara equates the two kinds of books is to remind us: Knowing that the dead are with us in judgment on this day allows us to ask: Have we lived up to the expectations, dreams and goals of our parents and other loved ones who are no longer in this world? If they were here today, looking at us as we are now, would they be proud? The deceased can no longer change the decisions they made for their own lives, good or bad. But we, who are still alive, have the opportunity to take advantage of this moment and repair all the bad of our lives and our surroundings. Perhaps the Books of the Dead and the Books of the Living don t just refer to those literally dead or alive. Perhaps we get to choose which book we wish to be part of for the coming year: Do I choose to truly live this year, to live a productive life where I ll make a difference for myself and others? Or will I be part of the walking dead, who go through life as a daily grind without realizing my true potential? Choose life! During these Days of Awe, let s say Yizkor for ourselves. Let s remember that little prayer at the beginning of the Siddur: Elokai neshama shenasata bee, tehorah hee My Lord, the soul You ve given me is ultimately holy. Let s reconnect to our holy souls and maintain that holiness through our renewed commitments to Hashem and our fellow man. Karen and I wish you a kesivah v chasimah tovah and everything good for the coming year. 4 SHALOM BAYT Fall 2015 Rabbi N. Daniel Korobkin Mara D Asra

We are on the cusp of the New Year The New Year gives us a chance to reconnect with Hakadosh Baruch Hu. It also gives us pause to reflect on the past year and how things turned out. It gives us a chance to look forward to an even more exciting year with greater successes than in the past. Over the course of the year there have been many daily, weekly and seasonal shiurim. The talent level of our maggidei shiurim is outstanding. From our spiritual leaders Rabbi Korobkin, Rabbi Spitz and now Rabbi Ziring to the multitude of volunteers from all walks of life who gave shiurim and shared their Torah, there is a shiur for everyone. Yasher Koach to everyone who gave a shiur on a regular basis or on occasion. Each person has enhanced the beauty of Torah and learning in the BAYT. I would especially like to extend our deepest appreciation to our Mara D Asrah Rabbi Daniel Korobkin and Karen Korobkin for their continued guidance, warmth and vision as they lead the BAYT to even greater heights. I would also like to thank our Assistant Rabbi, Rabbi Zev Spitz and Leora Spitz who have integrated so smoothly and quickly after their arrival almost a year ago and are making such a positive impact in many areas of the shul. Finally I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new Rabbinic Assistant Rabbi Jonathan Ziring. While he has just arrived, we look forward to successful integration into the BAYT. We wish him and his family Hatzlacha Rabbah as he settles in at the BAYT. The BAYT is blessed to have many generous individuals who give of their time. Without the multitude of volunteers at the Board and Executive levels as well as all the volunteers who work on committees and individuals who help out here and there, our shul would grind to a halt. These amazing volunteers ensure that all our programs for youth, adult education, social programming and fundraising as well as many others are hugely successful. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to all volunteers at every level of the BAYT. Besides giving of their time, so many of our members are very generous with their financial support of the BAYT. This past year we had the bracha of receiving generous donations for a Kiseh Shel Eliyahu as well as a chair in honour for Frank Dimant. Words cannot describe the outpouring of love and support the BAYT membership showed for our brothers and sisters in Israel. Led by the BAYT Brotherhood, together we purchased FIVE bomb shelters in Israel to protect those close to the borders who have precious few seconds to run to safety. Thank you to everyone who participated in all of these and other fundraising endeavours. Currently we are on our way for a very important Capital Campaign in which we hope to raise $3 million to undertake much needed repairs, upgrades and renovations throughout the building. We are off to a very good start with an extremely generous pledge from the Jewish Charitable Legacy Foundation to match dollars raised to a maximum of $1.5 million. Every dollar pledged will double automatically. We extend an enormous THANK YOU to the Board of the Foundation for their ongoing support. With such a strong foundation our BAYT is on solid ground. I encourage every member to join us on this exciting journey if you have not already done so to make the BAYT even better than it already is. The BAYT Brotherhood and BAYT Sisterhood do so much for the shul on an ongoing basis. They also raise funds for shul programs but they do so much more. They run the Bat Mitzvah program and the Shavuos shul wide siyum; the Purim Mishloach Manos program and the annual mission to Israel and more. Thank you to the leadership of the BAYT Sisterhood and the BAYT Brotherhood for enriching shul life in so many ways. Yet everything we undertake can only succeed with a wonderful support team and we at the BAYT are lucky to have such a team. Our office, led by our Executive Director Mordechai Bookbinder, help with setting up for programs, assisting members with questions, booking Simchas and events, preparing bulletins, tracking donations and expenses, and so much more. My thanks go out to Mordechai Bookbinder and this amazing team: Leslie Lewis, Office Manager / Membership; Sylvia Abbou, Accounting Manager; Noel Fernandes, Facilities Manager along with all the caretaking staff; Sheindl Belenky, Accounting Assistant; Karen Zilberberg, Booking Coordinator; Corrine Broder, Special Projects and Orpaz Gibson, Receptionist / Communications Coordinator. Drop by the office some time to say hello and thanks. Our youth activities are the envy of every shul. We have Shabbos activities and minyanim as well as weekday activities from tots to teens. The Sukkos carnival draws people from as far south as Toronto. Latke night is so much fun, especially the LATKE game and the prizes. The Purim carnival is great and there are Blue Jays trips, Marlie s trips and of course all the different sports activities. All of these activities and more run with an army of volunteers but the man who pulls it all together is our Youth Director, Rich Winkler. Thanks Rich for enriching the kids. I welcome everyone to get involved, volunteer for an activity, an event, a committee and you will find just how gratifying it is when you see the smiles on the faces of the people you have touched. To those who are already involved and making the BAYT a great place to be, Thank You for making the BAYT a wonderful home for everyone. I look forward to an even more exciting, dynamic year of activities in this coming year On behalf of my wife Rosalie and my family, I would like to wish everyone a Ksivah Vechasimah Tovah, Shanah Tovah Umetuka, a sweet, happy, healthy and prosperous New Year 5776, Alan Steinfeld President

6 MESSAGE FROM OUR ASSISTANT RABBI Elul is here. We have ushered in the month that is designated for personal evaluation and introspection in anticipation of the Yamim Noraim. You may be familiar with the famous acronym for Elul: This acronym, I am to my beloved and my.אני לד וד י ודוד י ל י beloved is to me, is a quote from השירים.שיר It represents that the time of year has come for us to search our hearts and draw close to Hashem, our beloved. For us to develop our Hashem. our service to and relationship with,בי ן אדם למקום There is also a less known acronym for Elul:,מגילת אסתר, the famous words from איש לרעהו ומתנות לאביונים teach that אלול is a time that each person should give gifts to their fellow friends and donations to the poor. These words teach that besides for being a time to develop our אלול, בין אדם למקום is also a time to develop our interpersonal relationships, our.בין אדם לחבירו A close examination of פרשת ראה develops this idea even חסידה further. Included in the list of non-kosher birds is the translated by most as the stork. The גמרא in חול י ן explains that the stork is called חסידה because of the חסד that it does by sharing its food with fellow birds. The obvious question is: if the חסידה behaves in such a praiseworthy way, why is it unclean? Why is it not kosher? Why is it unfit for human consumption? The question is compounded by a statement of the רמבם in his famous work נבוכ ים.מורה The רמבם writes that the prohibited birds are all vicious and cruel. Because we are what we eat, it is spiritually unhealthy says the רמבם to internalize the cruel traits and tendencies of the non-kosher birds. This leads us to logically conclude that the חסידה the stork, the bird that embodies the very desirable trait of chesed is exactly the type of bird that we should be allowed to eat! Why, then, is the חסידה not kosher? The חיד וש י הרי ם suggests that the answer to this question lies in גמרא A careful analysis of the.חסידה the description of the reveals that the חסד of the חסידה is flawed. Why? Because while the חסידה does חסד it only does so with its fellow birds, with its family and friends. As such, its generosity is limited to its own circle, to its own chevra. And such partisan, prejudice kindness is not what the Torah wishes we practice. The איש לרעהו ומתנ ות לאבי ו נים of the,חסידה its interpersonal relationships, are only with its fellow birds, its own chevra. Any living thing that expresses kindness only to its family and friends, to the exclusion of all others, is unfit for Jewish consumption. As we usher in the ימ ים נ ורא י ם let us remember the lesson of the not only stands for a time of אלול Let us remember that.חסידה Hashem. a time to develop our relationship with אני לד וד י וד וד י לי Let us remember that אלול not only stands for a time of a time to develop our interpersonal איש לר עהו ומ תנות לאבי ונ ים relationships. Let us remember that אלול also stands as a time of the anti-.חסידה As a time to do חסד for and develop interpersonal relationships with not only our family and friends, but with all of our fellow Jews and all of mankind. Leora & I, along with Esther, Yosef and Sarah wish you a year of health, spiritual growth, happiness and peace. 6 SHALOM BAYT Fall 2015 RABBI ZEV SPITZ ASSISTANT RABBI

7 MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR BY MORDECHAI BOOKBINDER It s amazing how quickly a year goes by. What s equally amazing is that while you re in the thick of it, you don t realize all that has been accomplished, or is in process. Much of what we involve ourselves in is often not readily apparent at first glance; working together with our volunteer committee and teams, many new policies and procedures have been established or are in process, including: New policies and procedures for Accessibility and Work Place Safety Revamped budgeting and reporting processes and procedures A Mission/Vision/Values Statement Constitutional/Governance Review underway Words like policy and procedure are often considered lackluster and may not be obvious. They are analogous to the electrical wiring and plumbing behind the walls of your house you don t much think of them but try living without them. For any organization, however, they form the bones upon which so much else can be built. Other efforts are very much in the foreground and are openly visible to all, including: A successful Golf Tournament Increased successful Yizkor Appeal fundraising A newly renovated Bride s Room Ever increasing use of our online membership renewal and payment system Launch of our first ever $3 million Capital Campaign Formalization and implementation of our top-notch Volunteer Security Committee Countless youth and adult programs and events These activities also rely on a strong professional-volunteer partnership to succeed. Our lay Board and committees provide the muscle that allows our community to hum with energy and vibrancy; their investment of time, energy and resources is at the heart of it all. For those who are not yet involved, give us a call; we d love to have you join us. Equally important is a great team of staff who help make all the administrative work happen. Booking simchas, renewing your membership, sorting through tax receipts, making arrangements for various events and programs, booking time with the Rav, receiving advice and seeking guidance on any number of things, the BAYT staff is formed of a wonderful group of people who really do care and want to help. Moreover, their combined experience is vast. Great people, helping to support great programming, in order to create a great community. Now THAT sounds like a winning strategy already. I can t help but look forward to another year. 8 A MESSAGE FROM THE HIGH HOLY DAYS CHAIRS BY ZVI WOOLF, ELIE KOCHMAN AND MICHELLE JACOBS We would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone - members, families, and guests, as you make the BAYT your home for this year s High Holidays. We hope you will find the experience meaningful and enjoyable. At this time, we would like to thank the myriad of people who have assisted in preparing the Shul for the High Holy Days. We would like to publicly express our gratitude to Rabbi Korobkin and Rabbi Spitz, and to our president Alan Steinfeld and the Board of Governors for all of their support throughout the preparations for the High Holidays. All of the programs and activities that we offer would not be possible without our single most important resource: our volunteers. They are the backbone, and greatest strength of this community. We truly rely on our volunteers and committees in order to function. We thank each and every one of you and admire you all for your dedication and readiness to give so freely of your time, energy and talents. The efforts of our volunteers are enhanced by the Herculean efforts of the office staff. It is important for the BAYT membership to recognize how invaluable our staff is and to let them know please thank them when you see them. On behalf of the Board of Governors of Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto Synagogue and our families, we would like to wish all of our members and guests a year of health, happiness and prosperity, and that it is a year of peace and security in Israel and all over the world. 9 FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE HIGH HOLY DAY QUARTERLY REPORT BY MITCH SILVERSTEIN, BAYT FUNDRAISING COMMITEE CHAIRMAN The BAYT officially launched an aggressive capital fundraising campaign on Shavuos, with a $3 Million total fundraising goal for the campaign. This capital campaign is the main activity that the fundraising committee will be focusing on for The building and property have served the Kehillah and the greater Toronto Jewish community extremely well over the past 25+ years, sustaining an incredible volume of people for dovening, learning and simchas. Over time, this wear and tear has taken a toll on the property and some major repairs and replacements are required such as the: Parking Lot and Lighting Roof Sidewalks Elevator Improved Accessibility etc. In addition, the building requires some aesthetic upgrades to keep it looking great and so people continue to be motivated to hold their simchas at the BAYT, as these events contribute significantly to our operating revenues. Some of the potential upgrades would affect the: Perlis Hall Rebbetzin Judy Taub Hall Main Sanctuary North and South Entrances So far, the Kehillah has responded wonderfully to our campaign with positive attitudes, comments and the commitment of pledges. As of the date of printing of this report, 105 families (approximately 13% of the membership) has pledged over $830,000 to the campaign. We are extremely fortunate and appreciative that the Jewish Legacy Foundation has agreed to provide a fabulous matching donation of up to $1.5 Million based on amounts collected from donors to the campaign. Baruch Hashem we are over half way to our goal, thanks to the great initial response of the Kehillah. We have made a great start and we are extremely proud of how people have stepped up so far with their support. But as they say in baseball, we are in the dog days of summer the difficult, hot part of the season where it is tough to win games - and tough to reach people and have them commit to this important campaign. In order to be successful and reach our $3 Million goal, we are going to need 100% support from the membership, to their financial capabilities keep in mind that you can manage your commitment by paying your donations over a 3 year period, as long as all of the funds are received by June 30, Please also consider participating in our Family Story Boards program it is a wonderful way for the Kehillah to feel more comfortable with other members and to show that we are all connected as part of the larger BAYT family. As we approach the High Holidays, we hope that you will all think of how important the BAYT is to you, to your children and to your extended families, and that when you are contacted about the donating to the campaign, you will give generously so we can all reach our goal and continue to make the BAYT the center of Jewish life for all of us and for the rest of the Jewish community of greater Toronto. G mar Chasimah Tova all the best for a happy, healthy, prosperous and meaningful new year! Mitch High Holy Days

10 HIGH HOLY DAYS SECURITY On behalf of the BAYT Safety Team, we would like to remind everyone that security begins with each and every member, particularly over the High Holy Days. If you see anything or anyone suspicious or unusual, report it as soon as possible to one of the Security Guards, Police Officers, BAYT Facilities Staff or a BAYT Safety Team member. As in the past, we count on member volunteers to greet people at the entrances to the Shul. Our regular, uniformed guards and York Regional Police Officers on duty at the Clark and Parking Lot entrances count on members for support even though they have been briefed on synagogue security. Here are some things to consider: Please be respectful of any requests from the security guards, members of the BAYT Safety Team and on duty York Regional Police officers. Kindly ensure that tickets are shown at each entry into the building Enter and exit the building only from the Clark Avenue West or south parking lot doors. All doors signed as emergency exits are alarmed and will signal the Vaughan Fire Dept. if opened. If you hear an exit door alarm, please advise a security guard, member of the BAYT Safety Team or on duty York Regional Police officers. Be alert for suspicious behaviour including parked or stopped cars and unattended bags/parcels. If you see an unfamiliar face, greet them and ask if they need assistance. If they appear suspicious, do not approach them. Rather, advise a security guard, police officer or BAYT Safety Team member. Be aware of your surroundings, the nearest emergency exit and who and what is around you. Designate a meeting place in the safe evacuation area for your family in the event of an emergency evacuation (Safe Evacuation areas are located at East & North ends of the parking lot). Youth leaders will evacuate children in groups in the event of an emergency. Do not congregate outside of the building particularly in front of the building on Clark Avenue West. If you notice suspicious behaviour in a passing vehicle, try to remember the license plate and a description of the driver and passengers. Report the same to a security guard or police officer. Minors should be accompanied by an adult or participate in the appropriate Youth program. Congregating or hanging out in the halls or lobby areas disrupts davening and poses a security risk. Please refrain from distracting the security guards, Police Officers, BAYT facilities staff and Safety Team Volunteers, by keeping conversations with each to a minimum. Thank you for helping make sure that the BAYT is safe and secure for all of us. Jeff Brown and Fay Gordon BAYT Safety Team Leaders THE HOUSE & MAINTENANCE COMMITTEE & BAYT STAFF EXTEND THEIR WISHES TO ALL FOR A HEALTHY AND HAPPY NEW YEAR. SHANAH TOVA! 10 SHALOM BAYT Fall 2015

FOR SAFTEY REASONS, CHILDREN MAY BE PICKED UP BY THEIR PARENTS ONLY! MESSAGE FROM THE DECORUM COMMITEE Over the past few months the Decorum Committee continued to meet with the Rabbinic leadership of the shul to coordinate Decorum initiatives. One positive change saw the posting of a barrier in the main lobby to help encourage people not to congregate and talk right outside the doors of the main shul during davening and the Rabbi's drasha. A second, larger initiative will hopefully be launched early in the Fall and will include literature and drashas from the Rabbis to aim to help everyone improve their personal kavanah during davening while also decreasing noise and idle chatter in shul. Special thanks to both Rabbi Korobkin and Rabbi Spitz for their ongoing support and effort in these important matters. As always, if any congregants wish to provide feedback or get involved with the committee, they are encouraged to decorum@bayt.ca or be in touch with the committee chairperson, David Sonenberg. 13 BAYT YOUTH MESSAGE FROM THE YOUTH DIRECTOR I know you may not like to read a long article, so I promise to be as brief as possible...no matter how long it takes. This Summer I thought I should enjoy the outdoors, do a little exercise and participate in an organized structured team sports activity...until I found out that you can buy trophies. I can t believe another programming year has flown by. The good news is that we get to do it all again with a new and exciting calendar of events. The summer was spent creating a wonderful line-up to engage the youth of our shul from toddlers to teens. Over the summer, the youth took part in a few special events. We were involved with the IDFWO program while they visited the BAYT for Shabbos. This beautiful weekend was orchestrated by Esti Cohen. Over 100 kids (of all ages) participated in the Tisha B Av events for our youth. Thank you to Elaine Genesove for all her assistance. 15 BAT MITZVAH PROGRAM The central focus of the BAYT Bat Mitzvah Program is that the Torah and its values are alive and well, even now in 5775, The Bnot Mitzvah who participate in the program are often from various schools but central to all of their lives is the values of a Torah which was given to us thousands of years ago, but which we accept as if it were given today. This is inherent in the actual learning and also in the various activities in which the girls will participate throughout the year. The girls will begin the year learning Megillat Rut with our Rav, Rabbi Korobkin. This will serve to set the foundation upon which their divrei Torah will be written. Each participant will research a topic related to the Megillah and learn how to write her own Dvar Torah. In addition, they will create a piece of art which will represent the message of their Dvar Torah. The many experiences the girls will enjoy together include simchah dancing, learning about leadership opportunities in the Jewish community, activities focusing on chesed and sensitivity to others, and a new addition which was added last year, appreciating life s daily gifts by starting their own journals. The mother daughter Melave malka is a beautiful way to bond with other mothers and daughters (or grandmothers) in the program. The girls will be treated to a session opening their eyes to potentially damaging media messages. In a world where knowledge is power, this session will provide them with more power with which to be strong in a world where values are often contrary to our beliefs. When the Bat Mitzvah program began 30 years ago, holocaust denial was not rampant. But in today s world, it is crucial that the facts surrounding the Shoah are taught to them by a reliable source. A visit to the Neuberger Holocaust Museum and hearing from a survivor will teach them many of these facts. A follow up session will sensitively provide some closure to the experience for the young girls. We hope that this program will give the girls a solid and well rounded foundation of values and skills as they reach the age of bat mitzvah and become fully contributing members of Klal Yisrael! We are looking forward to the start of another great year in the BAYT Bat Mitzvah Program. If you are a member of the BAYT and have a daughter turning bat mitzvah this year, please join us for an information evening Tuesday, September 8 th at 7:30 in the Moshe & Mania Gruda Bais Midrash at the BAYT. Parents and daughters are welcome! We d like to take this opportunity to wish a tzeitchem l shalom to Robin Berglas, our partner in the program for the last 11 years. We wish her and her family hatzlacha in Eretz Yisrael and will miss her friendship and the valuable contribution she made to this program! Zahava Shields & Heather Tanen
