1 WILSHIRE BOULEVARD TEMPLE BULLETIN High Holy Days 5774/ Volume 100, Number 8 August 1, 2013 Rabbi Leder s Top Ten Sanctuary Surprises People often ask me what was most surprising about the Sanctuary restoration. Here are my Top Ten surprises: 10. How dirty everything was, especially the dome. Guys in hazmat suits had to vacuum it before we could even begin to assess the damage. Yet, how beautiful the dome was back in 1929 and how beautiful it is now. Greens, browns, reds, gilded gold and the most extraordinary aqua and azure blues surrounding the Sh ma at the very top, capped by a deep blue orb as if open to the very heavens themselves. 9. How damaged, dark and far short of their potential the murals had become. How vibrant, powerful and sweeping they are now that they have been cleaned, retouched, re-gilded and properly illuminated. Decades ago someone painted over the names of the books of the Bible, once a part of the murals, because the original artist Hugo Ballin had painted them in the order of the Christian Bible rather than the order of the Hebrew Bible. Oops 8. How much it meant to the many non-jews who worked on this massive construction project to be renovating a holy space. This was not just another job to them. 7. Putting in the air conditioning was not nearly as complicated as installing the acoustic treatment necessary to keep us from hearing it. 6. There is a chamber in the dome for some of the organ pipes so that the music wafts down upon us from above. Heavenly 5. The sight of men repelling down the inside of the dome in order to hang the refurbished spice box chandeliers. Imagine Cirque de Soleil in the Sanctuary. 4. What the Sanctuary looked like filled with scaffolding 100 feet wide and 100 feet tall. 3. It took four semi-trailers to move the organ pipes from Los Angeles to Ohio where they were restored. 2. The stained glass in the Rose Window (NOT including the cast stone surrounding it, which was sawed in half to be removed) weighs over 3,000 pounds and that every segment was taken apart, repaired, cleaned and reassembled with new lead. Then the entire window was reinserted into the reinforced and restored cast stone surround that had been crumbling for decades. This was the first time such a complex procedure had ever been done in America. 1. The #1 biggest surprise about the Sanctuary restoration is: How great our ancestors who built Wilshire Boulevard Temple really were and how fortunate we are because of them. 2 Torah Portion Blessing or a Curse Parasha Re eh; Deuteronomy 12:26-16:17 The Torah portion begins with a powerful statement: See this day I set before you blessing and curse. Blessings will come if the people follow the commandments, and curses if the people fail to follow them. This is the kind of statement that can make Torah study a real challenge. There is a tremendous range of theological beliefs and experiences within the Jewish tradition and this parashah is a clear illustration of that range. The idea that your life will be good if you follow the mitzvot and bad if you do not is not, to be clear, my belief system nor is it unquestioned even within our sacred texts (see Job and Kohelet), not to mention throughout many centuries of writing on theodicy. And yet we can all find meaning in reflecting on this verse. We have before us the possibility of blessing and the possibility of curse in our lives, and we have the power to choose. This ability to choose is especially powerful when we think about our relationships with those we love. The day-to-day choices we make about Torah Online: how we see, acknowledge, hear and talk with the people we care about profoundly shape our lives. We all want to lean towards the blessing side of the equation but there are times when it feels like we don t have a choice. Overwhelming stress, unmet needs and patterns set over time can make finding the words and moments of connection and support a tremendous challenge. In some situations we simply need a reminder to slow down and be mindful of how we are relating to those we love. In other situations the step we can take is to see that we are stuck and need some help to figure out how to change what has become painful and disconnected. In the next days we are moving into the month of Elul. It is a month of reflection on our lives that leads us into the High Holy Days. These weeks are an opportune time to look back upon the choices we have made in this past year and to examine how they are shaping the relationships with those we care most about. Rabbi Susan Goldberg Plugged In The Schedule is Complete From S lichot to Simchat Torah, our High Holy Day schedule is complete and posted online at Gone are the days of searching every room in the house for the printed schedule of High Holy Day services and programs. No need to worry you might miss the extraordinary performance of The Art of Forgiveness-A Modern Take on S lichot, which opens the High Holy Day season on August 31. Should you forget the start time for our new Camp-Style Rosh HaShanah service, Tashlich at the Beach or the Temple and Citywide Sanctuary Dedication and Unity Concert, just take a quick look online and you won t miss a thing. Keep in mind that on our website you can also order tickets for services (if you haven t already), release unused tickets, request tickets at another Reform synagogue if you re traveling during the holidays, volunteer as a greeter during services and access our full High Holy Day Guide. Past sermons are available on the website and this year s will be posted too, soon after they re delivered. Now, you can concentrate less on the logistics and more on the celebration and reflection that define this special time of year. High Holy Days Services and Programs 2

3 Tikkun Olam Oklahoma We had no idea what to expect. We wanted to help the victims of the tornado in Oklahoma in a hands-on way. With Rabbi Shapiro s help, we connected with NECHAMA, the Temple s partner in disaster response. Less than a week later, we found ourselves in the middle of the American heartland Moore, Oklahoma. Our workday began by gathering alongside one of NECHAMA s trucks, which resembles a rolling hardware store. We were separated into small groups and briefed on which job sites we would be tackling that day. First we went to a farm in rural Oklahoma. Our team spent the day chainsawing trees, clearing brush into piles to be burned. The following day we were working in a flooded church basement pulling out wet, moldy carpeting and cutting drywall. Our last day we untangled an endless puzzle of mangled, twisted metal, wires and people s personal belongings, searching to recover anything meaningful for the victims who lost so much. We felt honored to represent the Temple and be part of the NECHAMA team alongside people from all walks of life, ranging in ages from 22 to 76, all working together to make a difference. We had no idea what to expect, and we could never have anticipated the profound impact our trip had on us. We put a lot into it, but we got back so much more. Mere Smooke & Suzanna Adler Adult Opportunities Elevation, Exaltation, Celebration Years before Wilshire Boulevard Temple was built in 1929, Rabbi Edgar Magnin traveled across Europe and studied the design and architecture of the great cathedrals. Inspired by the mosaics, paintings and sculptures he beheld, Rabbi Magnin envisioned a Jewish house of worship that would look like no other. The style would be a combination of Byzantine, Romanesque and Florentine architecture with a large arched dome roof patterned after the Pantheon of Rome. Inside there would be murals depicting the history of the Jewish people on the walls, Chartres-blue stained glass windows, and golden chandeliers in the shape of Havdalah spice boxes. Rabbi Magnin wanted to create a deeply religious atmosphere through beauty and serenity that would uplift the soul and reflect the mystical presence of God. In his own words, he wanted his new Temple to suggest reverence, elevation and exaltation. Eighty-four years later, that atmosphere will be more powerful than ever when we enter our newly restored Sanctuary in September. We too will be elevated and uplifted by the heartstopping beauty of Rabbi Magnin s vision. His vision, however, was not limited to his congregation alone. Rabbi Magnin was also a great proponent of outreach and interfaith relationships in order to foster peace and understanding among all people. It is in that tradition that we will dedicate our new Sanctuary on September 29 in a citywide celebration featuring a Unity Concert by six major Los Angeles church and synagogue choirs, and attended by religious and political dignitaries of all faiths. As we gather in our beautiful Sanctuary, may we be inspired by the harmony of its various styles of architecture to create harmony among our various communities. 4 Brawerman Elementary School Summer Sports Camp If you don t know how to play Lev Gibor, Hornswaggled or In the Doghouse, just ask any one of the more than 70 Grade 1, 2, 3 and 4 students who spent their first two weeks of summer vacation back at school. The Brawerman Blaze Summer Sports Camp at the Irmas Campus led by Coaches Ben Kamer, Peter Levenson and Barry Schapira was a resounding success. It s like being at school and getting to go to P.E. all day, remarked one camper. Activities included team building, skill development, games and more games, fitness, dancing, a wet and wild afternoon and a lot of fun. One mom commented, The experience was sheer magic, the coaches were so enthusiastic and caring and no one wanted it to end. Religious School We Welcome a New Principal to Our School am honored and excited to welcome I Cathy Gordon as the third and final principal to join us as we complete our Wilshire Boulevard Temple Religious School team. Cathy joins Rabbi Rochelle Tulik whose responsibilities include the Glazer Campus on Sunday mornings, as well as supervision of the K-2 teachers and the home Hebrew tutoring program, and Herschel Bleefeld who is responsible for Grades 7-12 and teen programs. Cathy is responsible for Grades 3-6 as well as the Irmas Campus on Sunday morning, the small group Hebrew tutoring program, as well as the task of creating new educational models for the Religious School which will launch next summer. Cathy has been working in the field of Jewish Education for over 30 years. It was at Wilshire Boulevard Temple s Camp Hess Kramer in the late 1970s that Steve Breuer hired her for her first real job as song leader. Since that time, Cathy has worked as a song leader and cantorial soloist as well as Hebrew school educator and vice principal. Living in Israel in the mid- 1980s, Cathy taught school and worked with children and senior citizens in an underserved community in Jerusalem. She received her master s degree in social work from UCLA and became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and served as the director of the Cult Clinic of Jewish Family Services in Los Angeles. She became the director of Camp Kinneret Summer Day Camp in Agoura Hills in While raising her three children, Cathy continued teaching part-time. Cathy is passionate about helping to ensure the Jewish future through her work with children, teens and young adults. I know she will bring a sense of pride, confidence and connectedness to all of our students. I am so excited she is joining our Religious School team. Rabbi Bruce Raff Religious School Director 4

5 Havdalah Early Childhood Centers Havdalah is the service that marks the completion of Shabbat the separation of the restful day of Shabbat from the rest of the busy, hectic week. Although this ceremony symbolizes a separation, in Nursery School we view it as a unifying event. At both the Mann Family and the Erika J. Glazer Early Childhood Centers we gather together on Monday mornings to say goodbye to Shabbat. Although our two schools are separated by 10 miles, we are united in our practices, philosophies, administration and love of Judaism. One School Two Sites. Two Sites One Shared High Standard of Excellence. Camps Campers and Counselors Create a Brit Kodesh Before each session at Gindling Hilltop Camp and Camp Hess Kramer, much thought, care and conversation takes place among counselors, educators and clergy about building and maintaining a safe community for everyone at Camp. Rules are established that reflect Camp philosophy and that over the course of the session help transform campers. These rules serve to create a nurturing and safe place for everyone to be and discover themselves, build a sense of community, create friendships and reinforce personal integrity while allowing for personal growth. On the first night of the session at both camps, counselors talk with campers in their cabins about their expectations for each individual while establishing a long-lasting community. Each cabin creates a Brit Kodesh a sacred covenant to be followed while at Camp. At Gindling Hilltop Camp counselors are going even further this summer. They created a camp-wide Brit Kodesh, which was introduced at the very beginning of the session. Every camper AND staff member signed it before moving into their cabins, and it now hangs prominently in the Dining Hall. Cheri Lauterbach Alumni & Development Director

6 *Glazer Campus Progress Report Yahrzeit Memorial Walls in the Sanctuary In Jewish tradition, we mark the memory of our loved ones by kindling a flame on their yahrzeit, the anniversary of their death, by making charitable gifts in their honor and by reciting the Kaddish prayer at services. Our new Yahrzeit Memorial Walls, beautifully designed and crafted by artist Lita Albuquerque, have been installed in the east and west ambulatories of our restored and renovated Sanctuary, and provide a special place to honor those who have especially touched our lives. In accordance with our tradition, each individual name plaque on these memorial walls will be lit on the yahrzeit date, at Yom Kippur Yizkor services and on Sukkot, Pesach and Shavuot. Memorializing the names of our loved ones in this traditional and sacred manner expresses our gratitude for the gift of their precious lives, and our hope that their spirits continue to inspire us. We recognize the two Temple families Richard and Dana Pachulski and the Eden and Steven Romick Family, who have generously provided the funding for the east and west memorial walls respectively.
