1 WILSHIRE BOULEVARD TEMPLE BULLETIN G uess how many pages it takes in the prayer book until God forgives us on Kol Nidrei? Three. Barely a minute into the service, God says, Salachti I forgive you. Almost immediately our slate is wiped clean. When it comes to forgiveness, God acts quickly. But what about us when it comes to one of the most difficult and important kinds of forgiveness; forgiving ourselves? How many of us are good at that? Most of us expect an awful lot of ourselves. And we expect a lot of our children, parents and spouses. We have a hard time forgiving them for their human frailties. The Torah knew better the heroes of the Bible aren t perfect. Their great deeds overshadow their mistakes, but they all make their share of mistakes. Virtually every family in the Torah is dysfunctional. God doesn t expect us to be perfect. When God creates the world in the Torah, the world is called good not perfect. For God, good is good enough. Life isn t a trap set for us by God, so that God can condemn us for failing. God doesn t set us up for failure. We do that all by ourselves. Online Edition Please call to obtain a full printed copy. Volume 96, Number 14 September 1, 2009 Author Anne Lamott puts it this way: I always imagined when I was a kid that adults had some kind of inner toolbox, full of shiny tools: the saw of discernment, the hammer of wisdom, the sandpaper of patience. But then when I grew up, I found that God handed you these rusty, bent, old tools friendships, prayer, conscience, honesty and said, Do the best you can with these; they will have to do. And mostly, against all odds, they re enough. God, on Yom Kippur, You forgive us our imperfections in just three pages. For You, good is good enough. Remind us not to give up on ourselves But to give up instead on the search for perfection. Help us to love ourselves as much as You do; making peace within; entering the New Year forgiving, forgiven and renewed. Rabbi Steven Z. Leder In This Issue When the Givers Are the Gifted Shabbat at Camp Sanctuary Restoration

2 Torah Portion Ahtem Nitzaveem: You Are Selected on This Very Day! On Shabbat Shuvah, the Shabbat between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur, we examine one powerful verse of Torah: For this commandment is not hidden from you and it is not distant. It is not in the heavens, for you to say: Who can go up to the heavens and take it for us, and let us hear it, so we can do it? The 12th-century French biblical commentator Rashi wondered: It seems like one might have to go up, as Moses did, and get the Torah s message. And it might even be understood that Moses descendants would have to make the trek to Sinai each time they wanted another Torah message. If that is the case, what does it mean that the text reads: It is not in the heavens? Remember, Moses went up to receive Torah at Mount Sinai. On other occasions, he went into the Tent of Meeting to hear God s word; even when Moses faced a concrete question about inheritance issues, he turned to God. Deuteronomy 29:9 30:20 The Israelites wondered what would happen when Moses was no longer the leader. How would they access Torah wisdom without a dedicated messenger? Rashi answered that query: Torah is not in heaven. Torah was revealed on earth, on a mountaintop, amid thunder and lightning, earthquake and volcano. Despite that dramatic entrance, all who stood on the mountain and all who stood below could understand each Torah word. Therefore, it can be understood that Torah is not in heaven it is within reach. It is a gift and a guide for daily human life, accessible to all. This new year, open your eyes and ears to Torah. Join one of our many study groups or read the Torah portion each Shabbat on your own. May the experience of Torah be yours, not in the heavens. Rabbi Karen L. Fox Plugged In Need Info? 3 Tikkun Olam When the Givers Are the Gifted Sometimes, pictures really are worth a thousand words. In the photo above, you ll see our Temple Campus Food Pantry security guards, John McCarthy and Randy Mason, holding up numbered cards. Just a few weeks ago, one of our clients decided that the worn-out paper tickets we use to keep track of client numbers were not worth the salt of our pantry. So this man created laminated number cards printed with a beautiful image of the Temple and gave them to John and Randy for our use. Learn more about our food pantries, visit On the right is a note from one of our homeless clients at our Santa Monica pantry. I was welcoming folks to get their lunch and coffee when an elderly man approached me. Rabbi, this is for you and your volunteers God bless you! he said, before taking a bag and leaving. I opened the card and read it to our volunteers that day, and we were speechless. As important as it is to give, those who receive also can and do give in their own meaningful ways. For us, that makes doing the mitzvah of tikkun olam a blessed, sacred two-way street. Rabbi Stephen Julius Stein Adult Opportunities Facing Challenges IRANISRAEL DIALOGUE JEWSBLACKS Whether exploring challenges within Iran and the effects on the Middle East, or opening hearts and minds to thoughtful conversation on the still-unresolved tensions of race and prejudice in America, the best way to tackle such difficult issues is DIALOGUE. Join us for three Sundays as congregants and members of IMAN (Iranian Muslim-American Network) explore what s really happening inside Iran and why, and how that country s multifaceted crisis will impact the region. As we learn, we also benefit from getting to know our Culver City neighbors, members of one of America s most liberal and dynamic mosques. and Last spring s African-American Seder was a success with more than 180 Jews and African Americans. This year, we will expand our offerings to include a musical tribute to the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as well as programming designed to facilitate hearing others stories, histories and challenges. Make this the year in which you join the conversation. Each and every one of us counts and we need your voice at the table. Rabbi Stephen Julius Stein For more information, Phyl Wallace at pwallace@wbtla.org or call (213) x269 3

6 Developments Sanctuary RESTORATION UPDATE Be prepared for some dramatic changes when you attend High Holy Days services. For the last several months, we have taken significant steps in the process of restoring our sanctuary. The Rose Window has been removed and is undergoing restoration. In its place, you will see a large, temporary, clear window. The spice box chandeliers have been dismantled and stored while they await restoration and renovation. A fabric cover has been draped over the interior dome as a safety measure that will allow us to continue to use the sanctuary for the next couple of years. Conservators from EverGreene Architectural Arts have tested various cleaning and restoration processes on the coffered ceiling and the Warner Murals to determine the best way to proceed. We will continue to update you as we restore our treasured home.
