Ps. 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 12. I Kings 8:61 (to 3rd,) Let your heart therefore be perfect with the LORD our God, to walk in his statutes, and to keep his commandments, Deut. 6:5, 6 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 14. Matt. 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Science and Health 1. SH 8:28 30 We should examine ourselves and learn what is the affection and purpose of the heart, for in this way only can we learn what we honestly are. 2. SH 451:8 16 Students of Christian Science, who start with its letter and think to succeed without the spirit, will either make shipwreck of their faith or be turned sadly awry. They must not only seek, but strive, to enter the narrow path of Life, for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat. Man walks in the direction towards which he looks, and where his treasure is, there will his heart be also. 3. SH 8:24 We confess to having a very wicked heart and ask that it may be laid bare before us, but do we not already know more of this heart than we are willing to have our neighbor see?

4 4. SH 407:6 8 Man's enslavement to the most relentless masters passion, selfishness, envy, hatred, and revenge is conquered only by a mighty struggle. 5. SH 8:3-6 We never need to despair of an honest heart; but there is little hope for those who come only spasmodically face to face with their wickedness and then seek to hide it. 6. SH 3:27 30 If we are ungrateful for Life, Truth, and Love, and yet return thanks to God for all blessings, we are insincere and incur the sharp censure our Master pronounces on hypocrites. 7. SH 597:3 5 The Judaic religion consisted mostly of rites and ceremonies. The motives and affections of a man were of little value, if only he appeared unto men to fast. 8. SH 326:8 All nature teaches God's love to man, but man cannot love God supremely and set his whole affections on spiritual things, while loving the material or trusting in it more than in the spiritual. 9. SH 3:32-9 While the heart is far from divine Truth and Love, we cannot conceal the ingratitude of barren lives. What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness, love, and good deeds. To keep the commandments of our Master and follow his example, is our proper debt to him and the only worthy evidence of our gratitude for all that he has done. 10. SH 587:23 (only, to 3rd,) HEART. Mortal feelings, motives, affections, SH 454:19-21 Right motives give pinions to thought, and strength and freedom to speech and action. 12. SH 19:17-24 Every pang of repentance and suffering, every effort for reform, every good thought and deed, will help us to understand Jesus' atonement for sin and aid its efficacy; but if the sinner continues to pray and repent, sin and be sorry, he has little part in the atonement, in the at-one-ment with God, for he lacks the practical repentance, which reforms the heart and enables man to do the will of wisdom.

5 13. SH 213:11 12 Every step towards goodness is a departure from materiality, and is a tendency towards God, Spirit. 14. SH 239:16-18 To ascertain our progress, we must learn where our affections are placed and whom we acknowledge and obey as God. 15. SH 61:4-6 The good in human affections must have ascendency over the evil and the spiritual over the animal, or happiness will never be won. 16. SH 451:16 If our hopes and affections are spiritual, they come from above, not from beneath, and they bear as of old the fruits of the Spirit. 17. SH 265:5 Mortals must gravitate Godward, their affections and aims grow spiritual, they must near the broader interpretations of being, and gain some proper sense of the infinite, in order that sin and mortality may be put off. 18. SH 407:11 Christian... Christian Science is the sovereign panacea, giving strength to the weakness of mortal mind, strength from the immortal and omnipotent Mind, and lifting humanity above itself into purer desires, even into spiritual power and good-will to man. 19. SH 262:24 Starting from a higher standpoint, one rises spontaneously, even as light emits light without effort; for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. 20. SH 326:16 21 The purpose and motive to live aright can be gained now. This point won, you have started as you should. You have begun at the numeration-table of Christian Science, and nothing but wrong intention can hinder your advancement. Working and praying with true motives, your Father will open the way. 21. SH 5:16 18 God... God pours the riches of His love into the understanding and affections, giving us strength according to our day. 22. SH 337:14 16

6 XXVI. Christian Science demonstrates that none but the pure in heart can see God, as the gospel teaches. 23. SH 324:2 Gladness to leave the false landmarks and joy to see them disappear, this disposition helps to precipitate the ultimate harmony. The purification of sense and self is a proof of progress. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. 24. SH 9:17 21 (to 2nd.) Dost thou love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind? This command includes much, even the surrender of all merely material sensation, affection, and worship. This is the El Dorado of Christianity. 1. Hymn. 423:1-3 Give me, O Lord, an understanding heart, / That I may learn to know myself in Thee, / To spurn the wrong and choose the better part / And thus from sinful bondage be set free. / Give me, O Lord, a meek and contrite heart, / That I may learn to quell all selfish pride, / Bowing before Thee, see Thee as Thou art / And 'neath Thy sheltering presence safely hide. / Give me, O Lord, a gentle, loving heart, / That I may learn to be more tender, kind, / And with Thy healing touch, each wound and smart / With Christly bands of Love and Truth to bind. 2. Hymn. 118:1-3 Holy Spirit, Light divine, / Shine upon this heart of mine; / Kindle every high desire; / Cleanse my thought in Thy pure fire. / Holy Spirit, Peace divine, / Still this restless heart of mine; / Speak to calm the tossing sea, / Stayed in Thy tranquillity. / Holy Spirit, all divine, / Dwell within this heart of mine; / Bid my troubled thoughts be still; / With Thy peace my spirit fill. 3.
