Eph. 5:11 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. Eph. 5:8 (to :) 8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: Ps. 105:4, 6 Seek the LORD, and his strength: seek his face evermore. 4 6 O ye seed of Abraham his servant, ye children of Jacob his chosen. Col. 3:12, 13 (to 2nd,), 15 (to,) 12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, Gen. 27:1-4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 18, 19, 30, 34, 35, AND it came to pass, that when Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esau his eldest son, and said unto him, My son: and he said unto him, Behold, here am I And he said, Behold now, I am old, I know not the day of my death: Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison; And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die. And Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son, saying, Behold, I heard thy father speak unto Esau thy brother, saying, Bring me venison, and make me savoury meat, that I may eat, and bless thee before the LORD before my death. Go now to the flock, and fetch me from thence two good kids of the goats; and I will make them savoury meat for thy father, such as he loveth: And thou shalt bring it to thy father, that he may eat, and that he may bless thee before his death. And he came unto his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I; who art thou, my son? 1/7

2 And Jacob said unto his father, I am Esau thy firstborn; I have done according as thou badest me: arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my venison, that thy soul may bless me. And it came to pass, as soon as Isaac had made an end of blessing Jacob, and Jacob was yet scarce gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting. And when Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry, and said unto his father, Bless me, even me also, O my father. And he said, Thy brother came with subtilty, and hath taken away thy blessing. And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob. And these words of Esau her elder son were told to Rebekah: and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said unto him, Behold, thy brother Esau, as touching thee, doth comfort himself, purposing to kill thee. Now therefore, my son, obey my voice; and arise, flee thou to Laban my brother to Haran; Gen. 30:43 43 And the man increased exceedingly, and had much cattle, and maidservants, and menservants, and camels, and asses. 3 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him. Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him. And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there. And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved. Gen. 33:1 (to 1st.), 4, AND Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept. And he said, What meanest thou by all this drove which I met? And he said, These are to find grace in the sight of my lord. And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; keep that thou hast unto thyself. And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me. SH 322:26-29 The sharp experiences of belief in the supposititious life 27 of matter, as well as our disappointments and ceaseless woes, turn us like tired children to the arms of divine Love. Uses of suffering SH 596:23-25 Though the way is dark in mortal sense, divine Life 24 and Love illumine it, destroy the unrest of mortal thought, the fear of death, and the supposed reality of error. 4 illumines, designates, and leads the way. SH 308:16-28 Jacob was alone, wrestling with error, struggling with a mortal sense of life, substance, and intelligence 18 as existent in matter with its false pleasures and pains, when an angel, a message from Truth and Love, appeared to him and smote the sinew, 21 or strength, of his error, till he saw its unreality; and Truth, being thereby understood, gave him spiritual strength in this Peniel of divine Science. Then said 24 the spiritual evangel: Let me go, for the day breaketh; that is, the light of Truth and Love dawns upon thee. But the patriarch, perceiving his error and his need 27 of help, did not loosen his hold upon this glorious light until his nature was transformed. SH 309:7-16 The result of Jacob s struggle thus appeared. He had conquered material error with the understanding of Spirit 9 and of spiritual power. This changed the man. He was no longer called Jacob, but Israel, a prince of God, or a soldier of God, who had fought 12 a good fight. He was to become the father of those, who through earnest striving followed his demonstration of the power of Spirit over the material senses; and the children 15 of earth who followed his example were to be called the children of Israel, until the Messiah should rename them. SH 21:1-5 21:1 If Truth is overcoming error in your daily walk and conversation, you can finally say, I have fought a 3 good fight... I have kept the faith, be cause you are a better man. This is having our part in the at-one-ment with Truth and Love. Wrestling of Jacob Israel the new name Moral victory SH 569:11-14 He that touches the hem 12 of Christ s robe and masters his mortal beliefs, animality, and hate, rejoices in the proof of healing, in a sweet and certain sense that God is Love. SH 242:1-3 Through repentance, spiritual baptism, and regeneration, mortals put off their material 3 beliefs and false individuality. Spiritual baptism SH 476:13-15, Mortals are not fallen chil 4/7

5 15 21 dren of God. They never had a perfect state of being, which may subsequently be regained. Learn this, O mortal, and earnestly seek the spiritual status of man, which is outside of all material selfhood. SH 296:9 (only) The old man with his deeds must be put off. SH 294:25-26 Man s genuine selfhood is recognizable only in what is good and true. SH 323:32 Willingness to become as a little child and 324:1 to leave the old for the new, renders thought receptive of the advanced idea. Gladness to leave the false landmarks 3 and joy to see them disappear, this disposition helps to precipitate the ultimate harmony. The purification of sense and self is a proof of progress. Blessed are the 6 pure in heart: for they shall see God. SH 8:3 6, We never need to despair of an honest heart; but there is little hope for those who come only spasmodi cally face to face with their wickedness and then seek to 6 hide it. If we feel the aspiration, hu 15 mility, gratitude, and love which our words express, this God accepts; and it is wise not to try to deceive ourselves or others, for there is nothing covered that 18 shall not be revealed. SH 296:4 6 Progress is born of experience. It is the ripening of mortal man, through which the mortal is dropped for 6 the immortal. SH 492:3 4 3 For right reasoning there should be but one fact before the thought, namely, spiritual existence. Scientific purgation SH 574: The very circumstance, which your suffering sense deems wrathful and afflictive, Love can make an angel entertained unawares. SH 298:28 30 Angels are pure thoughts from God, winged with Truth and Love, no matter what their indi 30 vidualism may be. 5/7

6 SH 299:15 17 By giving earnest heed to these spiritual guides they tarry with us, and we entertain angels unawares. SH 567:3 6 These These angels deliver us from the depths. Truth and Love come nearer in the hour of woe, when strong faith or spiritual strength wrestles and prevails through 6 the understanding of God. SH 242:15 20 In 15 In pa tient obedience to a patient God, let us labor to dis solve with the universal solvent of Love the adamant 18 of error, self-will, self-justification, and self-love, which wars against spirituality and is the law of sin and death. These clearer, higher views inspire the Godlike man to reach the absolute centre and circumference 15 of his being. Ps. 4:6 6 There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us. Ps. 17:15 15 As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness. 6/7
