2 From the Rabbi What are you doing for you Jewish soul? One of the reasons I became a Rabbi was that I wanted to share with others what had been given to me as a young man. From my home synagogue to USY to visiting and living in Israel, I learned that when my focus was on living Jewishly, I had great spiritual satisfaction. Living Jewishly doesn t just mean attending services or observing rituals, it means including Jewish values and wisdom in my everyday life. Many years ago, I learned the statement from Pirke Avot, Ethics of our Sages, that the world rests on 3 pillars, Torah (Learning), Avodah (service to God and spirit), and Gemilut Hasidim (Acts of Loving Kindness). To me that means that if I do something in each of these categories, I feel more spiritually fulfilled and better about living. A few years ago, I added Kehillah (community) to those categories. Whether I am vacationing in some exotic place, attending services, or watching TV at home, I am still Jewish and living Jewishly nourishes my soul. You might be thinking, Rabbi Gaber is going to write that, he is a Rabbi! For me as a professional Jew, I often think about what is it I do for the community and what is it that I do for myself. Sometimes that is very clear. In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, I could have just let others help those in need, instead I volunteered time myself to help others as they cleaned up and repaired homes because it helped me fulfill the words of loving your neighbor as yourself. Recently, I spent a couple of days over Hanukkah visiting assisted living communities and lighting candles and telling stories about the holiday. On one hand, I did that for the community but I also did it for myself because it was fulfilling my life long goal of helping others get closer to their Judaism and it nourished my soul because I had helped to make a difference in someone s life. My message to you this month, as we begin 2016, is to start doing things to nourish your Jewish soul and like a Chinese menu, I am going to encourage you to pick from each of the columns below: Torah Jewish learning Join us most Shabbat mornings as we learn Rashi together. Rashi is a famous and insightful commentator on the Torah. Join me for the upcoming Adult Education programs entitled: View of God in Jewish History and its impact upon us today and connecting to Israel through Jewish history and text. Topics too heavy? Join us once a month for our Chai Mitzvah program. And many more programs coming up this winter and spring. Avodah Service to God Many people tell me they are not religious but they are more spiritual. I agree, many of us are more spiritual which makes Friday night, Shabbat morning and Sunday mornings the place to be. You will have time to sit quietly without the distractions of electronics or anything else. Sit with the community, pray with the community and spend time in quiet meditation. Let us know that you are just there to sit during services and you will be left alone. Gemilut Hasidim Acts of Loving Kindness We are fortunate to have a strong Caring Committee that goes to the Birches once a month or so, that collects items to help those in need and helps those in need. More is coming up in the near future. Volunteer your time in a variety of ways for the synagogue. There is shopping to be done and more. Kehillah (Community) Join CBOI 55+ for a program or 2. We are going to Israel November Make your reservations soon for an unbelievable trip. Make a generous donation to Passport to Israel to help our young people go to Israel as a teen. We had a great tail gate Hanukkah in December and the Eagles even won!!! Join us for future communal events celebrating the moments we can be together. Programs for family with pre-school children. There is so much more we have to offer which will help you nourish your Jewish soul. You can never get too much of a good thing at CBOI. B shalom, Rabbi Aaron Gaber Friday, Jan. 15th 5:30-6PM A special Friday night Shabbat Service for preschoolers led by Rabbi Gaber Join friends for a musical, story filled 30 minutes of fun! 3 From the Co-Presidents In conversations with some people I know, we started having the discussion about why some Jews feel that the idea of celebrating New Year s on December 31 makes them feel uncomfortable. It is not uncommon that they see the holiday as part of secular tradition and therefore not Jewish. So they choose not to participate because they see it as a betrayal of Jewish tradition. In doing some research we can learn that the question should not be whether we should or shouldn t celebrate, but how should we do it? Is there a way to mark the holiday Jewishly? According to Rabbi Brad Hirshfield, there is a deep human desire to be able to start again, not to be imprisoned by the past. He explains how we need to feel hope for new possibilities and see that our future is not governed entirely by our history. These are very much Jewish ideas as well. Jewish tradition celebrates the ability to start over throughout the year. In Jewish life every day, every week, and at many other times, we are given the chance to begin again, so to integrate another celebration is very much in keeping with our tradition. In daily morning prayers, Jews thank G-d for renewing the world. Every Shabbat we recall the first moment of creation, and by doing so, give ourselves the chance to start over. At Rosh Hashanah, Jews everywhere celebrate the birthday of the world, and, according to Rabbi Hirshfield, even in the Mishna, the code of law, we recognize multiple Rosh Hashanahs (New Year s), so to commemorate an additional one is not foreign to Jewish practice. Plan ahead and save these February dates: So the question becomes what should I try to do as a way to improve myself this year? Here are some suggestions for making New Year s more Jewish: Jewish life teaches about the importance of words. Using words for the betterment of our society and not to harm others is a goal that we should aspire to. Jewish tradition has taken the transformative power of vows seriously for thousands of years. Can you take a vow to improve yourself and your life, along with the life of others, and take small steps to improve the likelihood of success? Jewish wisdom offers a sense of balance for healthy living. Can you learn to live your life with the proper balance between work, family, friends and spiritual devotion? Can you block out a small amount of time to support your synagogue? We here at want to wish everyone a safe and healthy new year. We hope to see you here at shul as part of your new year s resolution and promise to provide you the opportunity to fulfill your resolution to increase your sense of spirituality if and when you want it. 4 Religious School Shalom, Welcome to 2016! It is officially winter and that means in our Religious School, we continue to nurture all of our precious buds! Once again, we are working with the Jewish National Fund (JNF) and sponsoring our Annual Plant a Tree in Israel program. W e urge every family to plant a tree. Last year w e w on a P izza P arty for our school. With the support of the entire congregation buying trees, we can be entered into raffles for other great gifts. WE NEED THE ENTIRE CONGRGATION TO SUPPORT US! Wednesday, January 27, 2016, 5-6:30 PM During Religious School, We will have Tu B Shevat CELEBRATION Protecting our roots - Nurturing our shoots! This program will be presented by Anne Tanhoff Greenspoon Associate Director, JNIsrael Advocacy & Education A fun, interactive learning experience! All students (and Congregants) are invited to attend. Help us to be a TREE TOPPER school by exceeding the number of trees we planted last year. Tree certificates will be sent home in the beginning of January and due back on Tu B Shevat February 15, 2016 Planting a tree in Israel is the perfect way to show you care. You can plant trees for many different reasons and help green the land of Israel while sending a special gift to a friend or loved one. For each order, a beautiful certificate of your choice is mailed to the recipient with your own personal message. Plant trees for all of these occasions: birth, Bar or Bat Mitzvah, graduation, wedding, birthday, get-well wish, or in memory of someone special. Over the last 100 years, JNF has planted over 240 million trees in Israel. Tu B Shevat serves as a wonderful analogy of what we do in our Religious school: We plant the seeds; Nurture the buds: Benefit and enjoy the blossoms in the future. In closing, I share with you a part of an article from Torah.Org, which expresses so beautifully, my thoughts about the meaning and importance of Tu B Shevat: We see that the 15th of Shevat is an important growth period for trees. We also see that trees, in our tradition, are related to both Torah and to mankind, and that the 15th of Shevat was a time when there was major spiritual growth among Jews. So, Tu B'Shevat is a time for Jews to focus on "the Tree" -- the Tree of Torah and the Tree of our own spiritual growth, and our potential for growth. And so, just as we enjoy the fruits of the trees and wish for a good year for trees, I wish you all a good year for growth in Torah (keep on studying!), and for your own spiritual growth. B Shalom, Joan Page 4

5 On Wednesday, December 9th, our Religious School shared the joy of Hannukah at The Birches of Newtown! Dear Parent, Looking for a Chanukah gift that will last a lot longer than a bag of chocolate gelt? Give your child the summer of their life at Jewish camp! Jewish overnight camp offers endless activities including film making, singing, rock climbing, you name it -- but camp is about more than just campfires and color war. Your campers will return home more confident and invigorated, more sure of themselves and proud of their heritage. Moreover, if your child is a first-time camper, you might be eligible for $1,000 off the cost of camp this summer! Give a gift that lasts a lifetime. Learn how the One Happy Camper program can help your child get to camp this summer. Happy Chanukah! Sincerely, Warren Hoffman Associate Director, Center for Jewish Life and Learning P.S. Camps are already filling up (and once grants are gone, they're gone!) so visit OneHappyCamper.org today! Page 5

10 Israel Forum Subject: The Israeli Settlement Issue The settlement issue has been in news on and off since 1967 right after the 6 day victory war. It is clear that Israelis need housing and that the market should dictate the events. The world decided that the conquered areas (disputed) can t be used to build housing for the Jews. The United States recently joined the world. During the 1948 war of independence, the new Jewish state lost the eastern part of Jerusalem to the Arabs in spite of valiant effort by the outgunned youth. No nation came to their help. At least 2 dozen Synagogues were destroyed, hundreds killed and thousands flew out and became refugees, this was duplicated in other areas included Hebron. The world ignored it and never any constraints on the building of Arab housing on Jewish land since the last Temple in Jerusalem. The Jewish refugees were never acknowledged and the land was never called occupied by the world. In 1967 the Jews Recaptured the eastern part of Jerusalem, restored the synagogues and all other areas including the Western Wall and the areas around the Temple Mount. Others like Hebron and other Jewish Biblical restored. Now the World calls it occupied but it was not in 1948 when it was captured by the Arabs. Why are there two sets of regulations one for everybody and one for the Jews? I could not find an example in history where the defending and attacked nation returns the conquered land to a hostile and hateful people. Yet a week after the war, Israel offered to negotiate and return most of it for peace but that was rejected immediately by all 20 Arab nations. Since 1948 and only 3 years after the world realized that 2/3 of the entire European Jewish population were murdered we continue to survive in a hypocritical world. In 1948 the world just continued to watch the Jews being attacked by 5 Arab countries with a very slim chance of the Jews surviving organized armies almost 10 folds their numbers. The world just watched and were betting against a Jewish State, More rules by the UN made the Palestinians permanent refugees that include all their descendants. The only such group in history. The 650,000 by the UN count now numbers 5.5 Million. Billions of Dollars pours into the corrupt leadership of the Palestinians every year. If peace is achieved they will forfeit their welfare check. The Palestinians have no incentives for peace, therefore will continue with excuses like rejecting the building of housing for Jews (settlements) and the world again continues to accommodate and spoil them. My disappointment is that the White House continues to express harsh criticism for building in the eternal city of the Jews; Jerusalem. Dear Friends, CBOI and I are excited to announce our congregation Trip to Israel from November 2-13th 2016, with an optional extension to visit Petra. We are very excited by the itinerary - whether you are frequent traveler to Israel or this is your first trip, there is something for everyone. We hope to put together a large group of people who will show their support for Israel by making a trip of a lifetime. Here is the link: If you have any questions, please be in touch.
