2 From the Rabbi Happy Thanksgivukkah: Festival of Flaming Turkeys Flaming Turkeys! (my Thanksgivukkah article) This month Hanukkah will fall on Thanksgiving for the first time since 1888, something that won t happen again for another 79,043 years! So put on your yamulka and celebrate Thanksgivukkah. Facebook is posted up with Jewish-American fusion recipes like sweet potato and pumpkin latkes dipped in cranberry sauce. And if you ve been wanting to try deep fried turkey, this is definitely the year to do it. A 9-year-old New York boy used his computer to design and 3-D what he calls a "Menurkey, a turkey-shaped menorah. He has already raised $50,000 on Kickstarter! (Now that s some serious Hanukkah gelt!). You can also buy Woodstock inspired T-shirts with a turkey perched on the neck of a guitar and the words "8 Days of Light, Liberty & Latkes." And yes, the designers of those t-shirts have already gobbled up the trademark for Thanksgivukkah (guess I have to pay royalties now). But believe it or not, there is much more than kitschy plastic menorah turkey to be made of this cosmic collision for American Jews. They didn t teach you this in Hebrew School, but the first Hanukkah was really a do-over for the missed Fall harvest festival of Sukkot. The Second Book of Maccabees recounts, They celebrated eight days of joyful (simcha) parties, just like on Sukkot. And they remembered how they were unable to celebrate the harvest festival Sukkot because during the war they were wandering in the mountains and caves like wild animals (Ch. 10). Today we celebrate Hanukkah by adding a special Al HaNissim prayer to the daily Thanksgiving (Modim) blessing and in it we say, we established these eight days of Hanukkah for giving thanks and praise to Your great name. Okay, now here s a cosmic coincidence that really blew my mind The Hebrew word for turkey is ho-doo, AND the Hebrew word for giving thanks is also ho-doo! AND on Hanukkah we sing Ho-doo LAdonai! Give thanks to God! in the Hallel service. Would it be sacrilegious to say that this year what we mean to say is, give turkey to God? Okay. Yes, that IS going a bit too far. But at the very least, I would like to suggest that after feasting on deep fried turkey and sweet potatopumpkin latkes, we all wait until it gets dark to light up on the second night. Menurkey or not, we can all feel thankful that as Jews we have always found a way to survive and thrive among other cultures. We join every generation of Jews in enacting this miracle by adapting our ancient traditions and translating them into the language of our time. Let's rededicate ourselves to not letting the light go out. For when Thanksgivukkah comes again (in 79,043 years), America may no longer exist, but the miraculous light of Judaism and the infinite light of God will surely burn brighter than ever. As one midrash teaches, In the time to come, all prayers will be abolished except for hoda ah - thanksgiving prayers (Shochar Tov 56). Perhaps the light of gratitude will never go out, because it ultimately fulfills the purpose of humanity. Happy Thanksgivukkah! Rabbi Aaron Philmus... 3 From the Co-Presidents Brothers of Israel is more than a synagogue in the traditional sense a house of worship, house of study and house of prayer. Our synagogue is built upon its people. Our real strength, the refrain we hear most, is that Brothers of Israel is relationships, community and family. It is true that programs are the vehicle we use to engage members, but relationships are what keep you coming back. Every synagogue says that they are warm and welcoming, but there s a spark, a Hamish atmosphere here that is something special it s our sacred community and these people are our synagogue family. The holidays this year were very early (are the holidays ever on time?) and we move into October with several major celebrations behind us and a full synagogue year ahead of us. We ve each had the opportunity to reflect on our behavior of the past year and to set goals for the new year. On Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur each of you was challenged to think about ways in which you could contribute to congregational life in the synagogue. Every member has the ability and the opportunity to enrich the synagogue with their passions and talents. Becoming president of a synagogue is like taking ownership of a small business that is an ongoing concern. There isn t the chance to stop the clock or start again with all new resources. It is a challenge that we take on willingly and enthusiastically because of our love of this institution, its history, its traditions and its people. Part of our challenge is to try to get you to see Brothers of Israel through our eyes we see a synagogue family brimming with untapped potential and a place that can and should be your synagogue home. We see CBOI as a destination where you want to spend time with your children, your parents, your friends. We see our members and the larger community spending their time here on activities that enrich your lives socially and spiritually, through active learning and active doing. Your membership here should not be viewed in the passive sense I went to synagogue. I attended services. Rather, we want you to view this as a place of learning, growing, changing, participating, a place where we live Jewishly together. Part of our challenge is to see Brothers of Israel through your eyes. You have chosen synagogue membership, but it is one of many commitments in your life. You are busy raising a family, working at a job, career, or profession, trying to make ends meet, unable to find enough hours in your day to get to the things you must, much less the things you d like. Brothers of Israel may be where you were married, where you raised your family, a place with which you have an emotional connection, but not an active engagement. You may be one of the parents whose children are currently in our school, but you don t see a place for Jewish learning in your life at this time and your life is too full to do more than drop off. We understand the challenges, we face them too, but we know that what we have to offer can be a welcome addition to your life, not another burden or obligation. Brothers of Israel has a place in your busy life, it is a place for reflection, connection and renewal. Brothers of Israel is blessed to have active volunteers who are at every stage of life, each of whom makes a significant contribution to your synagogue experience. You may not see them at work, but they are there behind the scenes to ensure the smooth delivery of weekly and holiday services and celebrations, the maintenance and upkeep of our facilities, the provision of engaging educational programming including discussions regarding Israel, book reviews, cultural outings, cooking, social gatherings and community dinners, opportunities for tzedakah and outreach into the community, among others. Every one of these functions, and many more, can benefit from new energy and new ideas and some new projects and programs cannot be undertaken without additional assistance. We urge you to make 5774 the year that you choose to engage. Find your niche at Brothers of Israel or speak to us and together we will find an outlet for your passion. Brothers of Israel is more than a building, it s more than a religious school, it is relationships, it is community, CBOI is our synagogue family. Brandon Wind, Co-President In acknowledgement of the great job they did cleaning our ritual items. Page 3

4 Shalom Chaverim, The Pew Report- It has everyone in a tizzy! It has American Jews talking. It has Jewish leaders thinking. It has Jewish Educators re-designing. It has Rabbis giving sermons. Rabbi Philmus wrote about it in a recent Shabbat Shalom. Religious School What does it mean to me? I think the best take-away is the quote from HaAretz, sent to me by another Jewish educator, Suses Chalom, from Minneapolis: "For those of us who are non-orthodox rabbis and educators, this study should prompt a heshbon nefesh, or soul-searching, of our own. The results underscore the challenge and the urgency of our work. The data should urge us to lead with greater passion and with a clear vision. We must increasingly steer away from pragmatic responsiveness to what the amkha, the people on the street, tell us they want, and be leaders of a vision that is passionate and not afraid of aspiring to be more. We need to simultaneously deepen the notion of culture that seems to resonate so positively for American Jews, and persuasively articulate why a religious life matters. Rather than step away from ritual, we need to explain how ritual helps to transmit the values embedded within it, how sacred texts are the literature of our nation, how prayer is the poetry of our people. We are best positioned to demonstrate how Jewish culture and Jewish religion are as inseparable as they have ever been. " I promise to continue s 130-year commitment to translating Jewish learning into Jewish living, but I need your help and participation. A few years ago I was at a conference where I was privileged to study with Rabbi Lawrence Hoffman, a noted leader in synagogue revitalization. He shared this story from his childhood. "As a child, he always had to take cod liver oil. He never knew why, but it was a must. It finally dawned on him, if it is so important, why don t his parents take it? This is like religious school education. Jewish people transmit our culture, values and ideals through education, but education is not only for children. Jewish education enables us to satisfy the reality of the Jewish promise and it is a life-long quest. " Our challenge as Jewish adults, whether we have children in school or not, is that WE model Jewish practice. Learning and living as God s partner, needs all of us to be actively participating. As we get ready for Chanukah and Thanksgiving, let's give thanks for all of our blessings and renew the values that we learn from the story of the Maccabees. Doing what is right * Bravery * Leadership * Determined/never give up Thinking before doing/planning carefully * Working together * Fix something that s broken Bringing happiness to others * Faith in God Join us and be part of the rededication- FAMILY CHANUKAH CELEBRATION WEDNEDAY, DEC. 4, :30-6:30 OPEN TO EVERYONE IN THE SYNAGOGUE COMMUNITY Chanukah is the perfect time to rededicate ourselves to being active members of our sacred community! Chag Sameach! Shalom, Joan Page 4

10 It has been a very busy month of October. We had two very successful Israel Forum events and I have attended many other events that deal directly with the Middle East and Israel. Early this month I met with Scott Friedman head of Israel Birthright in Philadelphia to discuss the October 6 event at CBOI. Mr. Friedman was invited to dinner and spent the night at the Algazi home so that the next day we would be at the synagogue bright and early. We had a very good turnout around 50 with three young delightful people speaking about their experiences at the Israel Birthright program. The other programs I attended were at the Princeton Jewish Center and in Philadelphia ZOA yearly event. In Princeton, we heard a very courageous young Moslem woman involved with the Egyptian revolution talk about her involvement from the start. I had an opportunity to speak to her after the program and discuss with her in Arabic her life. In Philadelphia at the Zionist meeting, I met the keynote speaker Nonie Darwish another Egyptian very courageous woman who defied her family and converted to Christianity under the threat of death. She has been on numerous TV shows and had written several books, which I very much recommend. I also had an opportunity to speak to her at length after the event also in Arabic. It would be very long to describe here but I promise to share on Saturday after services. The next event I attended at Quakertown Church was a CUFI event (Christians United for Israel). Over 700 attended singing the Hatikvah perfectly and waving Israeli flags, they were not Jewish. I will later share with you the details of the event at Saturday services. Now we come to the October 20 event at CBOI showing the documentary The case for Israel narrated by Alan Dershowitz making a compelling argument for the State of Israel. About 60 attended many from our synagogue, and others as well and including many Christian groups. After the film, we had an open discussion involving most of the audience on how to respond to Israel haters. I received very positive comments. I will share with you as well later at a Saturday service.
