The History of Pogroms, presented by Jewish history enthusiast Alan Bernstein, date and place to be announced East Brunswick Hadassah Craft Party Craft Something Beautiful this Summer At a home in East Brunswick DO WE DO ADVOCACY? You bet we do. Hadassah is ALL about advocacy. Our programs, fund raising, education, Zionism and outreach form the architecture of advocacy. Through our Day in the District with Sen. Cory Booker s staff, we nailed it by advocating for Israel. A real picture of the border conflict, and how Israel takes in immigrants from all nations was stated. It was explained how Israel s hospitals give care to all who enter their doors and send highly trained medical teams to alleviate disasters over the globe. Many subjects were covered such as how our medical research is shared with the world and the need to end gender bias in medical research. Our fund-raising events in gift wrap advocated for early detection of Testicular Cancer in men and Breast Cancer in men as well as women. All fund-raising benefitted such areas as Cancer Research, the Hadassah Medical Organization, and JNF. Programming s Heart Health event advocated for healthy nutrition, and exercise in a cardiac surgeon s lecture as well as a water aerobics class. Our excellent food demonstrations created interactive, delicious meals with highly nutritious holiday recipes and robust research. Zionism was promoted as it honored Tu B Shevat through a lovely Seder advocating healthy eating in our Every Bite Counts initiative. Our town s proclamation provided the blueprint to Hadassah s good works and renamed a local street Hadassah Drive. Outreach provided hands on advocacy for our neighbors in need at Elijah s Promise Soup Kitchen, senior meals delivery through JFS, knitted hats for preemies and knitted scarves for the Lone Soldiers of Israel through Knit & Nosh. Our members advocate with their time, talent, and treasure, each in her own way, to build a newer world. We all are the women who DO. Happy Reading Marsha Happy summer to all! If you get excited each time you learn about HMO being the first to answer yet another medical question or dilemma with the potential to benefit people all over the world, then read on to learn what a team at HMO has learned to explain why your first pregnancy may have been a bit tougher than the ones that followed June 2018: HMO Researchers identify Natural Killer Cells that Threaten Early Pregnancy HMO researchers have recently found an answer to why subsequent pregnancies are often healthier than first pregnancies. As reported in the May 15 issue of the medical journal, Immunity, researchers at HMO have identified a role played by cells known as Natural Killer Cells. These cells are part of the body s immune system and have the ability to attack tumors and other disease infected cells. A team lead by Dr. Simcha Yagel, head of OB/GYN at HMO, however, has discovered a unique population of these nature killer cells found in the lining of the uterus that actually play a protective rather than a destructive role in the development of embryos, suggesting that a better name for them would be natural builder cells, at least in this environment. Furthermore, these cells were found to have memory making them better equipped to protect future pregnancies after learning from a first one. The hope for the future, is that as the team better understands the role of these cells, they can artificially trigger their protective function during first pregnancies. Michelle Silver
