2 PRESIDENT S COLUMN Dear friends, December has arrived! December always seems more frenetic because we have fewer hours of daylight to accomplish all our tasks. Since the first day of autumn in September, sunrise comes later and sunset happens earlier with each passing day. In Jerusalem, the sun bathes the City of David with its golden light at 6:30 am, but sets only ten hours later in the month of December. Shopping for and giving Chanukah gifts, frying latkes and Debbie Angel sofganyot, making those year-end donations there s so much we can still accomplish before the end of At the end of the year, we are celebrating an early Chanukah. It is timely and lovely that we have this holiday to rededicate ourselves to the ideals of not only Judaism but also to Hadassah. These days, with all the challenges that surround us, Hadassah offers us an opportunity to focus on many good works and positive stories of healing and recovery. Chanukah celebrates a well-known miracle. We all learned in Sunday school about the oil which was only enough for one day, but lasted eight days until more holy oil could be produced. This is a perfect metaphor for Hadassah. We do more with less. We are called upon to perform medical miracles daily. The teachers and staff of our Youth Aliyah Villages produce a miraculous transformation on the young people in their care. They create scholars who are healthy in mind and body, build an even stronger Israeli State. Young Judaea camps can make committed Zionists out of our American kids in just four short weeks during the summer. Here in Houston, Hadassah has been making miracles happen for almost 106 years. Your donations may seem small to you, but Hadassah manages to magnify your dollars by careful use. I urge you to donate to Hadassah before the end of the tax year. You will be helping Hadassah perform miracles. Don t forget that our Virtual Wedding Fundraiser is ongoing. This is a Donor level fundraiser and members may donate in any amount. It is a great way for groups to recruit new annual givers. Donations may be sent to the Hadassah office, , or at hadassah.org/events/virtualwedding. As I clean last year s wax off my hanukkiah (that s eight branches, not the menorah s seven,) I m thinking about my role as president of the Houston Chapter of Hadassah. I have been the shamash for the past year. That s the candle in the middle, higher than the rest, but servicing them all by lending my flame to light them up. I may stand taller than the other candles, but by the time I ve done my kindling duties I m even with my fellow Chanukah licht (Chanukah candles.) My job is igniting their passion and possibilities night after night until we re all burning brightly. I have been proud to use my powers to spark ideas in others and to shine with my friends for as long as we could. But I want to remind you that you too can be the shamash. Take on a job with Hadassah and ignite the passion of eight other women to help you. Take a position on your group s board, volunteer at the office, chair an event or help with one of the chapter s events. Our new Houston Chapter Board will be installed January 6 at the Royal Oaks Country Club. I hope you ll join me to take this opportunity to thank those going off the board and congratulate those coming onto it. Each of our board members and volunteers has been a light for me and for the chapter. May the Season of Miracles touch you and your families with daily miracles to be thankful for. Fondly, Debby Angel THE NEW YEAR IS THE TIME OF UNFOLDING HORIZONS AND THE REALIZATION OF DREAMS, MAY YOU REDISCOVER NEW STRENGTH AND GARNER FAITH WITH YOU, AND BE ABLE TO REJOICE IN THE SIMPLE PLEASURES THAT LIFE HAS TO OFFER AND PUT A BRAVE FRONT FOR ALL THE CHALLENGES THAT MAY COME YOUR WAY. 6 HADASSAH RECEIVES $4.75M GRANT FROM HELMSLEY CHARITABLE TRUST The Helmsley Charitable Trust has awarded a $4.75 million grant to the Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) in Israel to expand its Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Unit, announced Ellen Hershkin, National President of Hadassah. The funding will establish and equip the new unit, located in the Sharett Institute of Oncology at Hadassah University Hospital Ein Kerem in Jerusalem. The completed BMT unit will be named after Helmsley. HMO is very grateful to the Helmsley Charitable Trust for its vital support, states HMO Director General Prof. Zeev Rotstein. The demand for these highly specialized treatments is constantly increasing and this generous gift furthers Hadassah Medical Organization s mandate to provide world class health care to all the people of Israel, regardless of race, religion or nationality. Currently, HMO provides health care to approximately one million residents annually in Jerusalem and neighboring communities, including the West Bank. The new expanded Pediatric BMT unit will be part of the Department of BMT and Immunotherapy headed by Prof. Polina Stepensky, HMO s worldrenowned pediatric hemato-oncology and BMT specialist. Her team will be composed of physicians specializing in pediatric oncology to provide the highest level of care to its underage patients. Helmsley Trustee Sandor Frankel said, The Helmsley Charitable Trust is proud to support and advance this important project at HMO. The new expanded unit will enable Hadassah to provide lifesaving treatments to many more pediatric oncology patients every year. JOIN US!
