1 Cantor David Proser Co-Presidents Rona Proser Marge Schechner 1 st Vice President Alene Kaufman 2 nd Vice President Judy Saperstein Treasurer Ron Kaufman Trustees Amos Berkovich (2019) Harvey Eluto (2020) Nathan Segal (2021) Ways & Means David Lesser Steve Schechner Financial Secretary Lynn Bell Secretary Chris Epstein Facilities Lorence Ozzie Osmunson Executive Steering Committee Judy Saperstein Member at Large Danny Berkovich Jonathan Friedman Education Sandy Stern Auxiliary of KBH Co-Presidents Heliene Siegel Lynn Bell Programming/Social Rona Proser Webmaster Jason Silverstein Sam Epstein Kiddush Coordinator Rona Proser (757) kbhsynagogue@gmail.com Note from the Co-president: As the Summer winds down and summer vacations are a pleasant memory, the new board has spent many hours working around the synagogue. We ve decluttered the office and library, repaired the ceiling leaks, had the metal roof resealed (guaranteed for 50 years!), continued to reorganize the kitchen (a big thank you to the Osmunsons for their generous donation to our kitchen in memory of Hedy s parents), had Wi-Fi installed, hung artwork (with a special thank you to Dr. Jamie Lipton for his very generous donation of artwork) in the sanctuary and social hall and continued to upgrade our security procedures. A big thank you goes out to Ms. Judy Saperstein and her committee for their many hours of work this summer. Now we turn our energies toward getting ready for the High Holidays. First, we have our joint Selichot services held at Temple Emanuel on Saturday, 01 SEP Mr. David Proser and Ms. Alene Kaufman have been busy preparing for High Holiday services. I know both Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur services will be spiritual, inspiring and thought provoking as usual. And don t forget the 7 days of Sukkot complete with lunch in our sukkah following Shabbat services on 29 SEP 2018, Yizkor on Shemini Atzeret, then Simchat Torah starting with a spaghetti dinner followed by our traditional hakafot on 01 OCT Don t forget to bring kosher candy to distribute during the hakafot! We hope to see everyone at our first social of the year an end of the summer barbeque at the home of David and Renee Lesser on Sunday, 02 SEP We have many more programs and activities in the pipeline and will detail them for you as these plans become solidified. The new officers and board look forward to sharing a very exciting year with you! L shanah Tovah u metukah may you have a good and sweet new year. Kehillat Bet Hamidrash (KBH) the Kempsville Conservative Synagogue Volunteers Requested recently mailed High Holiday tickets for Rosh for Sukkah Construction Hashanah and Yom Kippur. If you did not receive your tickets or program, or know of someone who may desire to attend services, please contact the synagogue at (757) , kbhsynagouge@gmail.com, or via the U.S. mail. The holiday schedule follows at the end of the newsletter. KBH collects non-perishable items in our lobby throughout the year, but especially prior to Kol Nidre. In this spirit, we decorate our bima with Baskets of Hope supporting the Jewish Family Service (JFS) Food and Financial Assistance Program. Please bring food and personal hygiene products (e.g., soap, shampoo, deodorant, etc.) to the synagogue lobby to help JFS fill this need. You may also bring perishable items directly Sunday, 23 SEP :00 AM Rain or Shine Sponsor a Kiddush Please contact Ms. Rona Proser via kbhsynagogue@gmail.com to JFS on the Reba and Sam Sandler Family Campus of the Tidewater Jewish Community, 5000 Corporate Woods Drive, Virginia Beach, VA. 5 Kehillat Bet Hamidrash (KBH), the Kempsville Conservative Synagogue, distributes a Book of Life on Yom Kippur. Participants dedicate this pamphlet in memory of family and friends, whose names we read during the Yom Kippur Yizkor (Memorial) service. By honoring their memory through gifts of tzedakah, their contributions become a living memorial and support the continuity of Jewish life and community. Yom Kippur starts the evening of 18 SEP 2018 on this year s secular calendar, with Yizkor occurring around noon on Wednesday, 19 SEP The Book of Life automatically includes those you memorialize with a synagogue yahrzeit plaque. If you wish to include an additional name in the KBH Book of Life, we request a donation of $36 for the first two names, with $10 for each additional name. Please neatly print the name of the person you wish to include, and the person(s) remembering the name we shall read. We assume you wish the names grouped together unless otherwise indicated. Kindly include your donation with your request to arrive no later than Wednesday, 12 SEP 2018 to: KBH Book of Life c/o Sam Epstein 916 Old Homestead Lane Virginia Beach, VA We cannot neither guarantee acceptance of any verbal request nor publication of submissions that arrive after 12 SEP The synagogue prints your input as per the following example (please add additional sheets of paper, if necessary): In Memory of: In memory of: Sam Smythe Susie Smythe Bill Smythe & Barbara Keller In memory of: Fred Jones Crystal Powers Richard Armstrong Edna and Phil Lincoln Remembered by:
