כ Lesson 10: Chaf Meet your next, letterכ the Chaf! Chaf doesn t have an English letter that matches it exactly. We write it as CH, but it s a guttural sound, meaning a sound made in the back of your throat, almost like the sound of clearing your throat as though you needed the cough drop the Chaf s brother Kaf has. Here s the Chaf in several different fonts and handwritings as you can see, they all look like a backwards C and don t have a dot in the middle, even if other aspects of the letter are slightly different! כ כככ כככ כככככככככ כ Circle the part of each Chaf that needs a cough drop but doesn t have one! The first one has been done for you! Page 2
Now you can read the ב ר כ ה blessing: Hebrew word for Circle everything over which we say a ב ר כ ה on!ש ב ת Practice making the כ sound by reading the lines below out loud! כ כ ת כ כת כה כ כ 1 כה כ כ כ ת כ כ כ 2 ב ר כ ה כה ל כה כ כ כ 3 blessing go forth thus / this way Page 3
Writing Practice Make the letter Chaf with a curve: Some people also write Chaf like this: Feel free to use whichever shape is easier for you! Now you try: trace the letter across the first line, then copy it all the way across the second line on your own! Copy the words at least 3 times each: thus/ this way Jewish law sold come/ let s go Page 4
Read Aloud! Read the Hebrew below. Lines separate the syllables for you on the top see if you can figure out the syllables on your own on the bottom! 1 כ כה כה ב מ כר ל כה cried thus / like this 2 ה ל כ ת ב ר כ ה go forth sold 3 blessing you walked 4 ב כ ה כ כ ה ב ר כ ה blessing thus/like this cried 5 ל כ ה מ כ ר ה ל כ ת you walked sold go forth Page 5
One-Off Matching Read the Hebrew on the right out loud, then the Hebrew on the left. Match the ones that sound the same, but have one spelling difference. BONUS: Circle the difference! ב ת would match to ב ת instance, (For and the vowel would be circled.) 1 ב כ ה ר כ ש A he cried B כ כ ה מ כ ר 2 thus/ like this 3 ל כ ה כ כ C go forth D מ כ ר כ ה ב 4 sold E ר כ ש ל כ 5 bought/ acquired ב ר כ ה A ה ל כ ת ה ל כ ת B ש כ כ ת ש כ לה C ב ר כ ה ש כ כ ת D ב כ ת ה ב כ ת ה E ש כ לה 1 2 you walked you forgot 3 blessing 4 5 she she cried was bereaved (in mourning) Page 6
Speed Read! Time yourself reading the Hebrew below out loud at least 3 times. What s the best time you can get? 1 ב כ ה ר כ ל ל כ ה 2 ב כ תה ב ר כ ה ר go forth he peddled/sold he cried מ כ 3 ר כ ש ש כ ל ה ל he sold blessing she cried מ כ 4 מ כ רה ה ל כ ת כ כ ה tank (gas/air) she was bereaved (in mourning) bought/acquired 5 כ ר כ ת ר כ לה ר כ ה thus/like this you walked she sold soft she peddled/sold you wrapped/tied up 6 ל כ ה מ ש כ ה מ כ ה injury/pain she pulled/dragged go forth Time Log: Page 7
Meet your next letter, the Vet! Vet makes the same sound as the English letter ב Lesson 11: Vet V Here s the Vet in a bunch of different fonts and handwritings as you can see, they all have that same wide base as the Bet, but the inside is vacant no dot this time! בבב בב בב בב ב ב ב ב ב כ Circle the vacant belly of each Vet! The first one has been done for you! Page 8
Now you can read the Hebrew word for a male rabbi: רב You can also read the word for a female rabbi, where the letter changes back to Bet: ר ב ה Hebrew Hint The ending ה - often (though not always) indicates that the word is feminine! Does your synagogue have a,רב a ב ה,ר or both? Practice reading the ב in the lines below out loud! ר ב מ ב בש בה ב ב 1 rabbi (male) ה בה ש בר בה ר ל ב ש 2 come/let s go he broke increased/multiplied he washed כ ת ב ב ב ה 3 ר ב ב ה כ ת ב ה she wrote a great many / ten thousand he wrote pupil (of an eye) Page 9
HARD Reading Strategy: Letters Twins Some letters have twin pronunciations in English, like the letter C CAT GREEN and the letter G CENT GIANT soft Like identical twin people, English twin letters look exactly the same, but they have different personalities (sounds). English does (technically) have rules for when C/G appear as their hard or soft versions, but written English doesn t give a beginning reader any hint about which sound to use. If you don t already know the word, it can become a guessing game! If English is your first language, this part should be really easy: In the English words below, circle the soft Cs and Gs and cross out the hard Cs and Gs. The first one has been done for you as an example! 1. C R A T E 2. G R E A T 3. C A G E 4. C Y C L E 5. G A U G E 6. C O N C E A L 7. G E N I U S 8. C R I N G E 9. G R A C E Page 10
Hebrew also has some twin letters but lucky for you, they re fraternal twins: they look very similar, but there s one noticeable difference. You ve now met two (out of three) sets of twins among the Hebrew letters: hard soft ב ב B V כ כ K CHHH What s the difference between the twins appearances? You don t even need to know the words for this part just look for that giveaway difference to know if you re dealing with the soft twin or the hard twin! In the Hebrew words below, circle the soft sב and sכ and cross out the hard s ב and. s כ The first one has been done for you as an example! 2. כ כ ה ב ה 3. כ ב ת 1. ב 5. ל ב ר כ ר 6. כ ב ר 4. מ 7. ר 8. ב 9. ל ב ב כ ה ב ה Page 11
Writing Practice Make the letter Vet with a right-angle and a line: Some people also write Vet like this: Feel free to use whichever shape is easier for you! Now you try: trace the letter across the first line, then copy it all the way across the second line on your own! Copy the words at least 3 times each: pupil (eye) worn (clothing) rabbi (male) he broke Page 12
Lookalike Letters In the grid of Hebrew letters below, put a circle around every Chaf and a square around every Vet! Each row is in a different font reviewing the Silly Hebrew Tricks may help you recognize them all! ב כ ת ב ל מ ת כ ב ש כ ת ב כ ב ת ל ב מ ת ת ב כ מ ת כ ב ש ב כ מ כ ת ב ל כ ש ב ת כ ב כ מ ש ב ת ת כ ב ת כ ת ב כ ת מ כ ת ש ב כ ב ת כ ש ב ת ב כ ת ב מ כ ת כ ב כ ת ת ב כ ב כ מ ב כ ר כ כ ב Page 13
Read Aloud! Read the Hebrew below. Lines separate the syllables for you on the top see if you can figure out the syllables on your own on the bottom! 1 ר ב כ ת ב ב ב ה ש ב ר ה ב ה ל בש ר ב ב ה כ ת ב ה he wrote pupil (eye) come/let s go כ ת ב ר ב ה ב ה a great many / ten thousand rabbi (male) he broke he wore (clothing) she wrote ב heה wrote ב ל ב ש ש ב ר come/let s go rabbi (male) 6 ב ה pupil כ ת (eye) ר ב ב ה he wore (clothing) he broke 7 a great many / ten thousand Page 14 she wrote
Match-a-Rhyme Read the Hebrew on the right out loud, then the Hebrew on the left. Match the ones that rhyme! (Don t be fooled by lookalike letters that don t sound alike!) lacquer/ nail polish A ה ב ה ל כ ה 1 come/ let s go increased/ ר ב ה multiplied B ר ב ה כ כ ה like this C מ כ ה כ ב ה D ב כ ה ב ר ה he dined E מ ר ה thus/ 2 rabbi 3 injury/ 45 bitter (female) pain he cried ב ר כ ה ש ל כ ה A 1 blessing כ ת ב ה כ ב ש ה B 2 she wrote ה ל כ ה ש ת ב ה C 3 she walked מ ל כ ה ל ב שה ש ל כ ה D ש ל כ ה E 4 queen 5 she wore (clothing) Page 15
ד Meet your next letter, the Daled! Daled makes the same sound as the English letter D ד Lesson 12: Daled Here s the Daled in a bunch of different fonts and handwritings as you can see, they all have that diving board on both sides, one short and one long! ד דד ד ד ד ד דד ד ד ד ד ד ד Circle the small Diving board coming off the right side of each Daled! The first one has been done for you! Page 16
Now you can read the name of what we dip apples in on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year: ב ש ד ד ב ש Daled gets a dot if it s the first letter, but that doesn t change the sound! and the name of the time when we end Shabbat and begin the rest of the week: ה ב ד ל ה (The word literally translates to separation it s a bittersweet time of separating from our restful Shabbat to the hectic week!) These two things have another thing in common: can you fill in the blanks? We dip apples in ד ב ש to wish for sweetness in the coming, while during ב ד ל ה,ה we smell the spice box in hopes of sweetness for the next! (Need a hint? Think about how often each of these holidays happens.) Page 17
Read Aloud! Read the Hebrew below. Lines separate the syllables for you on the top see if you can figure out the syllables on your own on the bottom! בש ד ת דת ת ד ל ה ד ב ר ל מ ד ל ב ד ד ר ש ה ה ב ד ל ה Silent Sh va Sounded Sh va honey object/thing alone ד ב ש דת ד ב ר separation he drew out (from water) religion/faith he learned sermon ל מ ד ל ב ד ד ל ה ד ר ש ה ה ב ד ל ה object/thing sermon religion/faith he drew out (from water) honey he learned 6 7 separation Page 18 alone
Writing Practice Make the letter Daled with two lines: (Make sure the top extends past the vertical line on the right, or it ll look too similar to the Reish!) Now you try: trace the letter across the first line, then copy it all the way across the second line on your own! Copy the words at least 3 times each: oppressed he learned honey separation Page 19
Lookalike Letters In the grid of Hebrew letters below, put a circle around every Reish & a square around every Daled! Each row is in a different font reviewing the Silly Hebrew Tricks may help you recognize them all! ב ר ד ת ד ש ר ר ל ד ד ה ב ר ד מ ר ר כ ד ר ד כ ל ר ב ד ד ת ר ב ר כ ד ר כ ש ר ד ה ת כ ד ש ר ד ת ר ר ד ה ר ר ד ב מ ל ר ד ר ד ב ר ת ר ד ל מ ר ד ר ב ד ר ר ד ה ר ד ר ד ר ה ב ר ד כ ד ר ה Page 20
Backwards Matching Bonus Challenge Up for a challenge? Read the Hebrew on the right out loud, then the Hebrew on the left. Match the ones that sound backwards from each ת ב ל ל ב ת instance, other. (For and would match.) 1 ד ל ה ה כ ד A he drew out (from water) ל מ ד ה ד ל ש ד ר ד ל ת ה ר ד ל B ה ת ל ד C ה ל ד D ל ד ב ה E he learned the pauper (poor person) birch (tree) she drew out (from water) the sermon ה ד ר ש F ד כ ה ד מ ל G ל ד ר ר ד ש H ד ב ר ל ד ה I ה ב דל 67 8 object/ 9 de p re s se d to the resident thing the small piece 10 ש ר ד ה ר ב ד ה J she survived ב ר ה ד ר ב ד K 11 the object/ thing Are you having a LOT of trouble figuring out what goes backwards? Then just read the Hebrew out loud for practice then move on to the next letter only match this Page page 21 if it s a fun puzzle for you! Page 21
Speed Read! Time yourself reading the Hebrew below out loud at least 4 times. What s the best time you can get? 1 ד ב ש ל מ ד ב ר ד 2 ל ב ד ד ה ש ד ד object/thing he learned honey ר ש 3 ד ה ה ה ב ד ל ה ל ה he robbed sermon alone ד he drew out (from water) Separation he faded/dulled 4 ר ד ה ה ד ר כ ה ש ר ד כ ד ב ד ב ש ב ר he survived guidance/leadership oppressed 5 ר ל ד 6 ה ב ד ל מ ד ת ר כ ת to an object/thing in the honey like a pauper (poor person) ד you walked on/treaded over you learned the cloth/material Time Log: Page 22
Reading Strategy: Chataf Patach You know three vowels so far: two that make the ah sound, and the Sh va (the silent vowel). The ah vowels also have names: Sound AH AH (silent) Sound Name Kamatz Patach Sh va Name Sometimes, the Patach (the AH with just one line) combines with the Sh va and creates what s called a chataf patach. Read the definition of chataf in the green box below. Can you guess what sound a chataf patach makes? CHATAF: Whenever a Sh va (the silent vowel) is combined with any other vowel, it s a chataf vowel. It doesn t change the sound unless it comes with a kamatz. Sound Sound Name Chataf Patach Name (You ll learn chataf kamatz another day.) The chataf patach can only appear under a few letters the only one you know so far that can partner with a chataf patach is Hei. Practice reading the words below that have a chataf patach! ה ד ר ה ה ב ר ה ה ל כ ה Jewish law syllable/accent splendor/glory ה ל מ ה ד ה ה ר מ ה ל ל 1 2 Page 23
א Lesson 13: Alef Meet your א next letter, the Alef! Alef is a silent letter. It takes on the sound of whichever vowel is attached to it! Here s the Alef in several different fonts and handwritings as you can see, they all have those arms stretching out, even if other parts of the letter are slightly different! אאא אאאאא אאאאאאאאא Circle the Arms silently stretching out from each Alef! The first one has been done for you! Page 24
Now you can read the word for love in Hebrew: א ה ב ה and dad: א ב א Practice reading the Hebrew below aloud: מ א א ת ה א אל א א 1 When the Alef comes in the middle, be sure to give it a space so every vowel gets its own syllable! בא do not אב א תה ר א ה you (female) he saw you (male) father he came 2 3 א ד ר א ב ל ב א ה but/though Adar (Hebrew month) 4 א ה ב ה מ א כ ל א ב א dad א כ ל ה she ate she came food love Note that Alef can also get a chataf patach! Page 25
Writing Practice Make the letter Alef with a long diagonal, then the arms : Now you try: trace the letter across the first line, then copy it all the way across the second line on your own! Copy the words at least 3 times each: you (male) he saw dad love Page 26
Read Aloud! Read the Hebrew below. Lines separate the syllables for you on the top see if you can figure out the syllables on your own on the bottom! 1 אב Silent vowel followed by a silent letter? Give it plenty of space between the syllables! ש אר ב א ה א תה מ א כ ל א ב ל א ה ב ה א ב א she came א ת ה א ב ב א ה ש א ר מ א כ ל א ב א she came food love types/varieties father father you (male) but/though dad you (male) א ב ל types/varieties א ה ב ה dad food 7 love Page 27 but/though
Reading Strategy: Singular You Pronouns A pronoun is a word that stands in for the name of a person, place, or thing so we don t have to keep saying its name over and over in a sentence. Can you circle all the English words below that count as pronouns? it Sarah she book you Torah they them Israel he us him name her we In English, only two sets of pronouns have a gender: he/him (masculine) and she/her (feminine). The rest (you, it, we/us, they/them) don t change based on the gender of whoever it s referring to. In Hebrew, however, more pronouns have a gender, including the words for you (when referring to only one person it changes when there s a group!): א ת ה א ת you (singular feminine) you (singular masculine) Circle the one that would refer to you! Page 28
Read the Hebrew on the right out loud for practice. Then use the vocabulary you ve learned so far to match the phrases on the right to their English translations on the left! (Remember that Hebrew has no word for is/are or a, but they re included in the English when it s needed to make sense!) The first one has been done for you! A You are a (male) rabbi. B You are a bride. C You are a daughter. D You are the (female) rabbi. E You are the (male) rabbi.) F You are a father. G You are a (female) rabbi. H You are a queen. 1 א ת ב ת. 2 א ת ה ר ב. 3 א ת ר ב ה. א ת ה א ב א 5 א ת כל ה. א ת מ ל כ ה א ת ה הר ב א ת ה ר ב ה Do you have a male rabbi or female rabbi at your synagogue? (Or both?) Write out the phrase(s) you would say to your rabbi to say You are a rabbi! Can you find and circle the you pronouns in the blessings below? (You don t know all the letters in these blessings yet, but you can read the you pronouns!) 1 ב ר ו ך א ת ה י י א לה ינ ו מ ל ך ה ע ול ם ב ו רא פרי ה ג פן. 2 ב ר ו כה א ת שכי נה א ל הינ ו ר ו ח הע ו לם שע ש ני ב ת ח ורין. Page 29
Hidden Words Bonus Many Jews say Kiddush, the blessing over the wine, on Shabbat and other holidays. Some communities choose to say the blessing twice, once with masculine language for God and once with feminine language for God. The micrography below is composed of both blessings copied several times can you find every you pronoun, both masculine and feminine? How many times did you find you in the micrography? Page 30
Speed Read! Time yourself reading the Hebrew below out loud at least 4 times. What s the best time you can get? 1 א ב א ש א ר מ א כ ל food types/varieties father 2 א ב ל ר א ה א ה ב ה love he saw but/though 3 ב א ה ה א ב ש א ל ה she asked the father she came 4 א מ ר א כ ל ה א ש ר 5 ל א ב ה א ב א א מ ר ה that/which she ate he said 6 ש א ל א ד מ ה ב א ה she said the dad to the father ה next earth/soil he asked Time Log: Page 31
ו Lesson 14: Vav Meet your next ו letter, the Vav! Vav makes the same sound as the English letter V Here s the Vav in several different fonts and handwritings as you can see, they re all a thin vine: sometimes just a line, but if it has a top, it s about half as wide as the Reish! ר ו ו ו ו ו ו ו ו ו ו ו ו ו ו ו ו ו ו Draw a leaf on each one of the Very thin Vines of the Vavs! The first one has been done for you! Page 32
Now you can read another prefix that means and : ו - So a vav at the beginning of a word is kind of like a plus-sign א ת א תה Match the Hebrew on the right to its English translation on the left! A You and father B You and a rabbi 1 א ת ו א ת ה 2 א ת ה ו א ב א C You and you 3 ש ב ת ו ה ב ד ל ה D A rabbi and a rabbi 4 ב ר כ ה ו א ה ב ה E Shabbat and Havdalah 5 מ ל כ ה ו כ ל ה 6 ר ב ו ר ב ה F Blessing and love 7 א ב א ו ב ת G Queen and bride H Father and daughter 8 א ת ו ר ב Page 33
