1 3610 Dundee Rd. Northbrook, IL Volume 246 September 2018 Elul/Tishrei 5778/5779 Dear Friends, FROM THE RABBI S STUDY Rabbi Sidney M. Helbraun One day, the Baal Shem Tov was studying with his disciples, when they heard a light knock on the door. His students, focused on their studies, ignored the noise and continued learning. But after a minute, the knocking grew stronger, disrupting their lesson. One of the students walked over and opened the door to find out what the noise was about. He saw an old man with a scraggly beard and matted hair, whose clothes were nothing more than unwashed rags, pushing a cart that was as worn out as he was. In his hand, he held a rusting toolbox. Excuse me for interrupting, he said, but I m a traveling handyman and could really use some work. Do you have anything that needs fixing? The students, eager for the old man to leave, vigorously shook their heads. A few of them began shouting: We have nothing that needs to be repaired. But the handyman was persistent. Really, nothing? he asked, not a loose hinge on the door, a cracked window, or a frayed rug? At this point, as far as the student was concerned, the conversation was over. While the handyman continued to talk he closed the door, and then signaled for everyone else in the room to remain silent until the handyman packed up his belongings and left their shul. Finally, they thought, our rabbi can continue his lesson. However, several long minutes passed before the Baal Shem Tov began to speak. And when he did, his voice was quivering. Think about what that poor handyman just taught all of you, he said. You are all such smart and attentive students, yet you failed to see the most obvious thing of all. None of us is in perfect condition. All of us can use some mending and some healing. But PAGTAH Cantor s Notes Education Upcoming Events Member News In This Issue if we refuse to search within our hearts, if we slam the door when the world knocks with a reminder to carry on with our repairs, then we ll never get better. At this time of year, we can imagine that persistent rap at the door as the sound of the is Shofar calling us to search our souls; to push aside, not only that which distracts us from our mission, but also those issues which enflame and engulf us, stealing our focus and consuming our attention from opportunities that appear right before our eyes. One such matter, which I wrote about last month, is the conversation with the Northbrook Trustees on September 25 th, about Cook County s sick leave measure which provides workers with the opportunity to earn one hour of paid sick leave for every forty hours at work, with a maximum of five earned sick days per year. Like the handyman in our story, this matter is knocking on our door, calling for our attention, asking us to help those who work in our community to be treated with dignity and respect. It also seeks to provide a measure of safety for those in our community who are served meals, or are cared for by those who might not be able to afford to take time off when they (or a family member) are ill. Like the handyman at the door of the shul, who seeks to earn a wage to support himself and care for his family, this measure strives to enable those who work in our midst to live with dignity. And I hope that you will be in touch to let me know that you will join me at this meeting. The High Holidays remind us that each of us are flawed, that none of us are perfect. But rather than understanding this to mean that we are irredeemably broken, Judaism calls on us to view our human state as an opportunity to listen, to learn, to grow, and to become. We were not born complete. We have a lifetime to become the people we were meant to be, and to strive to build a community that treats all its inhabitants with dignity and respect. May 5779 be a year of courage, strength, growth and renewal for us, for our families, for our community, for our nation, for our homeland, and for our world. L Shana Tova. 2 2 PAGTAH: Pay Attention, Good Things Are Happening Shabbat Under the Stars turns into..shabbat Under the Stairs! Temple Beth-El participates in the JUF Create a Legacy Annual Celebration In recognition of accomplishing this year s goals, TBE received a $10,000 check from JUF.

3 Cantor s Notes CANTOR S NOTES Cantor Adam Kahan The light had just turned green. I pushed on the gas pedal, not too firmly, but in a more relaxed way so that the car s acceleration matched my mood unhurried gentle. As I approached the next intersection, and its red light, my phone rang. I answered the unexpected call, and quickly learned that I was supposed to be somewhere I had missed an appointment on my calendar, and I was still another twenty minutes away. As an aside, I have come to learn that we Chicagoans tend to describe distance by the amount of time it takes to get there, rather than you know distance! I apologized profusely, and vowed to get there as soon as I could. The light turned green, I did not push on the gas pedal in a relaxed way. I accelerated the car in a way that matched my mood rushed somewhat embarrassed and wanting to make it better faster! I was now hurrying to get to the appointment, and my emotions had shifted entirely because I was now late. It s funny, though. There was no change in traffic, no change in anything perceptible other than the new information I had learned, yet I was now feeling rushed and stressed, and hurried. Time is special in that way. Time doesn t change, but our perception of it certainly does and the beautiful thing is that we can have a say over how we perceive that time as it is happening. While I was driving, I was reminded of an idea taught to me many years ago. Whether I experienced stress throughout my whole drive to that destination, or I experienced calm, I was going to get there at the same time, either way. Therefore, I might as well allow myself to be relaxed, because stressing about the error, and making myself wrong wasn t going to change anything for the positive, and may actually have increased my chances of getting into an accident. I took a deep breath, and chose to try and relax as much as possible while I remained intentional about getting to my destination as quickly and safely possible. How we choose to travel through time, and the mindset we adopt, is really a choice accessible to us at any moment. September is a bit of a wild card in the temple s life cycle. In some years, the High Holy Days fall towards the end of that secular month, and into October. Other years, and this being one of those, the High Holy Days come quite early, and time seems so much more rushed. So many wonderful people are working hard at the temple to make sure our congregants have the best possible spiritual journey through the High Holy Days. It could be so very easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle, in the massive undertaking, and have it dictate how I experience my life how hard I push on the gas pedal, and how much stress I experience. If I ease up a bit, and look around, I see that I am surrounded by an amazing staff here at the temple, an incredibly gifted accompanist in Craig Scheidecker, Choir Director in Richard Green an amazing temple choir, guitar band and many other gifted individuals who have already brought so much joy to my own experience, and with whom I m excited to help craft all our journeys through the holidays. As we dwell in this Jewish month of Elul, and prepare to meet the new moon that brings about our New Year of Rosh Hashanah, I hope we each have a chance to observe time to see how we each have a say in how we orient to the pace of our lives. In the clearing of new beginnings, may each of us have the opening for fresh starts, and the chance to relax into the journey. We will get to our destination when we get there, and in the meanwhile let s refresh and enjoy the path. L shanah Tovah. Tikateivu, V teichateimu. A sweet year to you. May you write your story, and may it be sealed in the Book of Life. 3 FROM THE PRESIDENT Judy Rosen For me - September is really the beginning of the year from my school days, to my work in Jewish communal life, to all the years I was sending kids off to school in the Fall September not January was the start of the year. Pre-iPhone there was the purchase of the Day Planner calendar, fresh school supplies, new clothes and all of the other things that accompany new beginnings. I think this time of year can and should be used as a time of reflection. Certainly, during High Holiday services there is ample time for silent meditation and there are so many meaningful prayers to read and reflect on. As I reflect on what I hope to gain from my tenure as TBE president my goal is Try and leave this world a little better than you found it, and when your turn comes to die, you can die happy in feeling that at any rate, you have not wasted your time but have done your best. (Robert Baden-Powell) That s my goal. No big gestures no grand plans just some simple things that I hope will help TBE to grow and flourish during the next two years and onward. I would love to get your feedback and hear what things you would like to see at TBE. A new program? A new service? Ideas for a Tikkun Olam project? This is OUR congregation! Please reach out and share your thoughts with me at rosenjudy5@gmail.com. And remember you get out what you put in. Join us at our many programs and services this coming month. (Check out our calendar in this bulletin.) I look forward to greeting you at High Holiday services to join you in decorating our Sukkah and to dance with you during Simchat Torah. From the Rosen family to yours wishing you a sweet, peaceful, happy and healthy New Year!

4 4 Education DIRECTOR OF LIFELONG LEARNING Mandy Herlich As we gear up to head back to school, I cannot wait to welcome all of you back into our building for another year of learning and growing here at Temple Beth-El. Over the summer, I had the privilege of serving for my third summer on faculty at our local Union of Reform Judaism summer camp, Olin-Sang Ruby Union Institute (OSRUI). It was an inspiring two weeks, watching the campers connect to Judaism through song, prayer, friendship, learning, and by experiencing all of the new opportunities that life at camp has to offer. I am looking forward to bringing many of the things that I saw at OSRUI back here to Temple Beth-El and integrating them into our religious school. This year, all of our grades will have new and exciting learning opportunities. In particular, we are excited to roll out a brand new Sunday morning schedule for our 2 nd -6 th graders. On Sunday mornings, our students will begin the day with Boker Tov, good morning. We will all gather together in the foyer for the first ten minutes of the day for a musical morning ritual. All are welcome to join, so feel free to come in and sing along! After that, students will spend thirty minutes each in three rotations: They will have Ivrit, Hebrew, which will focus on conversational Hebrew and developing a positive relationship with the Hebrew language. During Limmud, learning, students will be engaged in experiential Jewish learning around Israel. They will have the opportunity to develop relationships with Israelis their own age while learning about the culture and history of the country. And they will have a Tarbut, culture, rotation which will involve art, cooking, and music. They will end the day in Bayit, homeroom, with a chance to connect with one another, build community, and reflect on their learning from the day. As you can probably tell, Sunday mornings will involve a lot of movement and a lot of fun. I am really excited for our students to get to experience learning in this way! I would like to thank the Education Committee for all of their help and support in visioning and implementing this new model. I cannot wait to see everyone back at TBE for our opening day of religious school on Sunday, September 16. Please join us at these events. A Successful Year for the TBE Men s Club Softball Team The Men s Club softball team recently completed another fun and exciting season. Under the leadership of our manager, Mark Trachtenberg, we completed the season tied for 4th place in the 12 team league. We competed against other synagogues from across the North Shore. We entered the playoffs with high expectations, after reaching the semi-finals one year ago. After defeating our first opponent, we were unable to prevail in the quarterfinals. Congratulations to Dale Lasky, who we ve named our gold glove winner. While being a highly effective lead-off hitter, his hot glove at third base kept us in awe all season long. Jason Harris is our rookie of the year. Beyond his ability in the middle of the infield, his passion and enthusiasm kept us in the game at all times. We will be spending the next seven months rejuvenating and then mentally preparing for our 2019 campaign. Please reach out to us if you would like to join the squad as we are always looking for new players. In processing the thousands of phones sent to them every year, they wipe clean all personal data and either refurbish the phones, recycle the parts or melt them down.
