Helbraun I love Passover; gathering together with family and friends, the foods that remind me of my childhood, the rituals of the Seder. Yet over these last few years Passover has also had an element of discomfort. For when we finish all of the dipping and singing, after we ve poured out our ten drops of wine, when the last chorus of Dayenu has been sung and we put down our Haggadot and begin the meal, an air of uncertainty settles around the table. What are we going to talk about? What can we talk about? I know that my family is not alone in dealing with this challenge, and that many homes have taken political discussions off the table at family gatherings. After all, in an era of heightened sensitivity, where, as Hal Lewis, President of Spertus College says discussions can quickly turn into disagreements, and disagreements are viewed as disrespect; where the words: you re wrong are taken to mean: you re stupid, civil discourse quickly becomes a minefield. And the last thing that anyone wants at Passover Seder is to see their family gathering disintegrate into open warfare. It s distressing to see how far we ve come. To realize that the best we can do is talk about a freak snowstorm or how our sports teams are faring (particularly when they aren t doing so well.) It s just that our society has become so very politicized, and each of us seems to carry ourselves with so much certainty about our world view, with no room left over to hear what anyone else has to say. It s particularly sad because Judaism holds discussion, debate and disagreement in such high regard. Indeed, pick up a copy of the Torah, and you ll find a variety of opinions written in the IN THIS ISSUE margins commentaries by our sages, who offer their understanding of the correct meaning of the text, side by side with an even greater sage who disagrees with their opinion. And yet, rather than creating hurt feelings or anger, this debate creates energy and excitement. For rather than being seen as an assault on each other s integrity, the diversity of opinions represents a sense of love, respect and care for the text. It is seen as a search for truth. And each opinion, each comment, each perspective helps to clarify, and brings us closer to gaining a better understanding than we might have had before. Rather than talking points designed to win an argument, our disagreements are seen as lasers that are used to shape a diamond, each cut bringing a greater sense of clarity, and creating a more beautiful, brilliant stone. For Judaism, conversation, debate, argument is seen as holy work, because each of us share the same goal. Striving for greater insight, deeper understanding of our relationship with God and our role in the world. In this kind of conversation there are no winners and losers, as there are in political discussions. In these conversations, everyone who participates in the debate is a winner, because they played a role in helping to clarify truth; they helped to polish the diamond so that it would shine even brighter. This is what we ve lost in America, at large, and at our Seder tables. We ve forgotten that each of us has something of value to share, that needs to be considered in the larger picture. We ve forgotten that, at the end of the day, each of us is striving for the same goal, seeking an American society that is responsive to the needs of her citizens, a nation that promotes goodness in the world, a country that is a shining example of human potential. As Americans, and as Jews, we ll only make progress towards that potential when we remember that each of us plays a role in polishing that diamond and making it shine. 2 2 CANTOR S NOTES Cantor Faryn H. K. Rudnick, ACC After months of hard work and preparation, our visit with guest artist in residence Noah Aronson is finally here. I hope you re as excited as I am for his visit on April 13th and 14th; it will be a special weekend that will be uplifting, spiritual, musical, and a truly heart-warming experience. If you have not already sent in your participation or sponsorship forms, I hope you will consider joining us for one or all three of the weekend s events. Noah, along with Kol Beth-El, our adult choir and band and Kol Tuv, our youth choir, will lead us in services Friday night, April 13th. The service will be preceded by Shabbat dinner. We will celebrate Shabbat the way the kabbalists intended - with great and joyous music. Plan on coming back on Saturday morning, April 14th, for a more intimate experience when Noah leads the Casual Shabbat Minyan, and then leads a brunch discussion and teaching entitled, From the Left Side of the Page. And finally, bring 10 of your closest friends for the highlight of the weekend, the concert with Noah and his band, which takes place Saturday night, April 14th, beginning at 7:00 pm. This is a weekend not to be missed! DIRECTOR OF LIFELONG LEARNING Mandy Herlich Who doesn t love helping others? Sometimes, though, it seems that finding meaningful projects that are appropriate for all age levels and life schedules can be a challenge. There are a number of meaningful things happening this spring around our community that everyone can be involved in. April 15 is JUF s Good Deeds Day. There will be a number of projects happening around the area, including a fair at the Bernard Weininger JCC right here in Northbrook. Stop by anytime between 2:00-5:00 pm to volunteer for a variety of hands-on projects including preparing sleeping mats for the homeless, making stress balls for therapeutic day schools, creating art for the elderly, packing kindness bags to hand out to someone in need, and much more. You can register for this or any of the other volunteer opportunities online at juf.org/tov/good-deeds -day. I am really excited that this year because Temple Beth-El will be participating with Good Deeds Day during our own Mitzvah Fair on May 6, our closing day of religious school. During the morning, we will have a number of social action projects happening right here in our building. I encourage you to join us! On the topic of Tikkun Olam, below is a note from our 7 th grade students who have been working hard this year with the help of their teacher, Helen Melnick, and assistant, Allison Wexler, to make a positive impact right here in Chicago: Cantor s Notes Of course, this weekend would not be possible without the hard working members of the music committee and the hard working staff at Temple Beth-El. We have had the fortune of great visiting scholars and artists, people who enrich our lives through their teachings, music, and souls. You may have noticed some young menches running around Temple Beth-El for the last few months. The seventh grade class at Beth-El is on a mission to give back to society by creating Blessing Bags for people experiencing homelessness. Even though we are only one seventh grade class, we hope we can make a difference in these people's lives. We want for people who are experiencing homelessness to have hope and life and to lift their spirits and get them back on their feet. Blessing Bags are drawstring backpacks containing essentials for daily life such as non-perishable food, water, hats, gloves, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and more. Each bag is accompanied by a studentmade fleece blanket and was personally assembled and decorated with messages of hope by a member of Mrs. Melnick's class. We asked members of the community for donations and gratefully received many items for the bags. With financial contributions, we took a class field trip to the store and bought additional supplies. After the craziness of Purim Carnival planning is over, we will complete our project by giving our creations to a homeless shelter. We have learned about the importance of Tikkun Olam since we started Hebrew school and, with the endeavor, we get to put words and values into action. The seventh grade class is still accepting items for their Blessing Bags. Feel free to contribute to their project by dropping supplies off here at Temple Beth-El.

10 10 Tikkun Olam SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE Elaine Cooper Koffman The Social Action Committee (SAC) holds an event at CJE SeniorLife s Robineau Residence in Skokie at least once a month. On February 21, 2018, SAC members Stewart Schram and I helped those who live there put together a giant puzzle of the United States. We also discussed the different states in which we have resided, places we have visited, and states through which we have traveled. The SAC s next visit will be on March 21. SAC member Marcia Kanarek organizes the Temple Beth-El (TBE) volunteers who assist at the monthly birthday parties that take place at CJE SeniorLife s Gidwitz Place in Deerfield on the third Wednesday of each month from 1:15 to 3:15 pm. On February 21, TBE s volunteers were Andrea Brown, Susan Schneider, and Sharyn Trachtenberg. To participate in this good deed, which is appropriate for children of all ages, please call or Marcia ( or imokydoky@aol.com). Doris Guthman, Mary and Shel Leshner, Phyllis Kaplan, Ben Koffman, and I volunteered at the Uptown Café (808 W. Wilson in Chicago) on February 5. It was a very snowy day and four of the Café s other volunteers cancelled. Therefore, they were particularly grateful for the assistance of our congregation s intrepid six. TBE s other Uptown Café dates for 2018 are: Thursday, March 22; Sunday, April 22; Sunday, July 15; and Sunday, October 21. On weekdays, volunteers work from 5:30 to 7:30 pm and on Sundays, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. Children who are at least 12 years old may volunteer, so this is a meaningful bar/bat-mitzvah project. The SAC will have a table at TBE s Purim Carnival on Sunday, March 4, where we will sell cans of fruit and vegetables for the Ark. Afterwards, both the cans of food and the money collected will be donated to the Ark. The SAC is happy to be working with TBE s Immigration Committee. On March 4 at 1:00 pm, SAC member Susan Boldrey and I will attend an Awareness and Action about the Rohingya Ethnic Cleansing meeting at Skokie Valley Agudath Jacob Synagogue in Skokie. Soon, the SAC will be collecting money to provide financial assistance to our Yad L Yad partners in Yekaterinburg, Russia, so that their children can have a one-week Jewish sleepover camp during the summer. Temple Beth-El is proud to support: A Just Harvest is the largest community soup kitchen in the Chicago metro area. Volunteers from Temple Beth-El join together four times a year to help A Just Harvest feed those in need. COME JOIN US. WE NEED YOUR HELP. Available products, and the local stores that are likely to stock them, can be found at: (BIG). TBE Monthly Tzedakah Collections A tzedakah box is located in the foyer. In April, tzedakah will go to MAZON, a Jewish response to hunger. Checks should be made payable to Temple Beth-El and mailed to the Temple office marked tzedakah. As always, we thank you for your continuous and generous support. Keep an eye out for all upcoming opportunities at: SHALVA Collects Cellphones, ipads and ipods Temple Beth-El has been collecting cell phones for SHALVA for many years. The phones are collected, then shipped to Shelter Alliance, a recycling operation in Florida. They pay SHALVA according to the blue book value of each phone. In processing the thousands of phones sent to them every year, they wipe clean all personal data and either refurbish the phones, recycle the parts or melt them down. Each year SHALVA receives around $4,000-5,000 just by collecting your old or broken cellphones. All of these dollars go directly to help SHALVA clients. ipads and ipods are now also accepted. Share ALL Your Good News Share the news of any new additions to your family. Tell us about the birth of your child or grandchild, engagements, weddings and anything else. This permanent remembrance will give you great comfort for many years and will serve as a reminder of the place your loved one held in your life. A permanent memorial plaque is displayed bearing the name and yahrzeit date on the Memorial Wall outside the Sanctuary. Your loved one s name will also be included on the weekly yahrzeit list outside the Sanctuary on the anniversary of their passing and be read at our Friday evening Shabbat Service.
