1 3610 Dundee Rd. Northbrook, IL Volume 235 September 2017 Elul/5777 Tishrei/5778 Dear Friends, FROM THE RABBI S STUDY Rabbi Sidney M. Helbraun I was visiting Jonah, who is taking classes at DePaul and living in a student apartment in the Loop, when I decided to text a picture of him standing in front of his bedroom window, with a great view of Willis Tower in the background, to Debbie and Becca. They responded immediately and we began a conversation about how much better his view is than Becca s. She proved it by texting a picture from her window. By this time, I was walking down the street, phone in hand, when suddenly it struck me that Jonah was in his apartment, Debbie was up at OSRUI in Wisconsin, and Becca was on the other side of the equator, working in Ecuador for the summer. And the four of us were sharing pictures and conversing as easily as if we were all standing in the same room. What an amazing world! I guess I m fortunate to live when I do, because my family has arrived at that stage where for all of us to be together in the same room has become a bit of a novelty. (This summer we only managed five days together.) I realize that this is how it s supposed to be, that our kids are supposed to grow up, head off, and begin to make a life for themselves. Usually I manage to deal with it pretty well. Okay, usually I ignore the fact that they re gone. But this summer it s been harder to ignore and I ve been feeling a bit more melancholy than usual. It s hard not to think back a few years and remember when we were all living in the same house. But of course, if I m honest with myself I remember the reality, that those childhood years were filled with a great deal more bickering than they were with family harmony. In fact there were some days that seemed to drag on forever and felt like they would never end. Yet now, one 24 hour period flows quickly into the next, as days pass by like a rushing stream. The other day I was struck by a verse in Psalm 90 which reads: A thousand years in God s sight are but as yesterday when it is past. In the past this verse spoke to me of immortality, that although the world around us is continually changing, God is eternal. But now this passage comes across differently, and it seems more relatable to me, more personal. It s not that I can understand what the passage of a thousand years would feel like, but I ve begun to appreciate the idea of the elasticity of time, that while days and years last a set amount of time, the length of those days and years, our experience of them, can expand or contract, depending on one s frame of reference, one s age and stage of life. Right now it feels as if I ve stepped onto a superhighway and life has begun to fly. I expect that within the next decade or so there will be some changes, as my children settle in and start to build their own worlds and Debbie and I take on new roles in our family and community. But for now, I m going to keep hanging on, striving not only to enjoy the view, but identifying ways to leave markers behind for others to find, to create blessings for those who follow, and to not only count my days, but to make them count. It used to feel as if days lasted forever. But now I know that years can pass in the blink of an eye. In this coming year, let me fill my days with blessings and let me use them well. May 5778 be filled with joy and gladness, good health, family and friends. May it be a year of growing and sharing, and of being and bringing blessings. Amen. 2 2 CANTOR S NOTES Cantor Faryn H. K. Rudnick, ACC My Hebrew name is S mecha, the feminine form of the name Simcha, which literally means happiness. Maybe this is why I have always loved the holiday of Simchat Torah so much. After all, I have a personal connection in the form of my name. While I am certain this was true when I was young, I now know that I have a deeper connection to the holiday. Without a doubt, a large part of it has to do with my love of Torah. However, it also has to do with the powerful memories I have from my childhood. As a child I remember the joy in the community as we danced in the sanctuary, doing 7 full hakafot, stopping when the giant stop light turned red to switch Torah carriers, to switch music, to read a little from a Torah, and then dancing and running around again when the light was turned to green. At the end of the celebration each family was sent home with Hershey s chocolate candy bars and, more importantly, a connection to the holiday, a connection to the community, and a lifetime of memories of rejoicing with the Torah. Last year, we, the staff and RAC committee at Temple Beth-El, decided to revamp our Simchat Torah celebration. We brainstormed and considered the holiday from all angles, and in the end, we created a new, lively, and warm Simchat Torah celebration. MEMBERSHIP DON SOLOMON I had an interesting experience today. I was feeling down and overwhelmed with life in general. Nothing in particular, some things weren t going my way and there was a lot going on. I didn t know how I was going to get it all done. I m sure this is a common feeling among congregants. But, I had a Membership Committee meeting at the temple this afternoon. After leaving that meeting, I felt lighter and less burdened. I still had all the tasks and problems I had before. But, somehow, doing some work, making some decisions, moving things forward on activities and events for our JoAnne Barston, Onsite Coordinator We hope you had a wonderful summer. It is with great enthusiasm that we begin our BJE-ECC school year at Temple Beth-El. We are looking forward to another great year Cantor s Notes/Membership Update Our new Simchat Torah celebration begins with dinner. Immediately after the dinner, we danced with the Torah scrolls to the live music of the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band, which includes a member of our congregation, Mark Glinberg. After dancing and rejoicing, we opened the Torah, unrolling it completely so that everyone can see a part of the Torah. Here is where we did something extra special; once the scroll was fully open, we began a fluid reading of the Torah. We invited past B nai Mitzvah students to read a few verses of their Torah portion. We had 2 from each book, one chanting into the next, with Rabbi Helbraun reading the final verses of the Deuteronomy, followed immediately by me chanting the opening verses of Genesis. To say it was spectacular would be an understatement. After the Torah reading, we rolled the Torah back together and danced again until dessert. The entire evening truly fulfilled the obligation of rejoicing on the holiday. This year, our celebration will remain the same. We will have the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band joining us again, we will unroll the Torah scroll and hear it chanted continuously by our past B nai Mitzvah students, and we will find joy in cycle of our Torah readings. If you were not able to join us last year, please consider joining us this year on October 11. It is a truly magical time in the cycle of our holidays, and it will be a night and celebration like none you ve had in a long time. Wishing you all a healthy, happy, and festive holiday season. May your new year be a good year, and may you all find joy and happiness when you join us to celebrate on Simchat Torah. community made me feel better. I know there are congregants out there who don t want to get involved with committees or events at the temple because they have so much going on already. But, I m here to tell you that doing that little extra work will make you feel much better. There is a euphoria that comes from doing work by which you help others. So, please consider helping out on one of the many committees that we have: Membership, Fundraising, Religious Activity, Social Action, Legacy and Endowment, Men s Club, Bingo Night, Artist in Residence, Education, and Sisterhood, to name a few. There s plenty to be done. Contact me (dsolo91563@gmail.com) or Janice Hadesman (jhadesman@templebeth-el.org) and let us know what you are interested in. We ll guide you to the right person. of exploring, learning and fun. If you know anyone moving to Northbrook who is looking for a great preschool with a Judaically integrated curriculum, nurturing teachers and a beautiful facility, please have them call me at or me at joannebarston@gmail.com. Wishing all of you a Very Happy and Healthy New Year!

3 Education DIRECTOR OF LIFELONG LEARNING Mandy Herlich As we gear up to head back to school, I cannot wait to welcome all of you back into our building for another year of learning and growing here at Temple Beth-El. Over the summer, I had the privilege of serving on faculty for two weeks at our local Union of Reform Judaism summer camp, Olin Sang Ruby Union Institute (OSRUI). It was an inspiring two weeks, watching the campers connect to Judaism through fun programs and experiential opportunities. I am looking forward to bringing many of the things that I saw at OSRUI back here to Temple Beth-El and integrating them into our religious school. To begin, we are planning four Ruach (spirit) Shabbat services over the course of the year. These will be camp-style services with lots of music and space for community building. I would like to encourage all of you to join us for these services. Our first one will be on Friday, October 20. I invite you to mark your calendar now so that you can come. Wear your camp swag, and get ready for a fun and meaningful evening! I would like to thank the Education Committee members for their continued hard work and dedication. Over the summer, we have continued to make improvements to our school. As we gear up for another year, you will see adjustments to many of our policies and procedures. I would like to remind you that these changes are being made to improve the learning environment and safety of our students while they are in the building. 18 18 Member News JUF Supports Temple Beth-El s Legacy - Will You? The TBE Legacy & Endowment Fund was delighted to accept a $10,000 award check from JUF on July 13. We earned this check by meeting JUF s challenge of gathering 18 commitments to our Legacy & Endowment Fund. As a member organization of the Build a Jewish Legacy campaign with JUF we receive training, materials and financial support for reaching benchmarks. Accepting the gift on behalf of Temple Beth El was an honor and a tribute to the hard work of the Legacy & Endowment Committee, said Jill Weininger, Committee Chair. Moreover, it is an acknowledgement of the members who have taken on the mantle of philanthropist by making arrangements for both current and after-life gifts. Our next challenge has already begun and we need to have a minimum of 36 signed commitments by June 30, 2018, Weininger added. Commitments can be in the form of cash, after-life bequests or a combination thereof. A robust endowment fund is central to securing Temple Beth-El s future. While members of the Legacy & Endowment committee are meeting with temple members, you do not have to wait for us to call you to become a member of the Legacy Circle. Feel free to contact Jill Weininger at jillweininger@icloud.com or or Janice Hadesman at jhadesman@templebeth-el.org or

20 20 Tikkun Olam SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE Elaine Cooper Koffman In memory of their father and grandfather, Social Action Committee (SAC) member Joanne Gold and her daughter Rachel created a charitable initiative in which people make fleece blankets for nursing home residents and hospital patients. On June 19, Joanne guided representatives of the Sisterhood and the SAC in making blankets for the people who live at CJE SeniorLife s Robineau Residence. Those who participated were: Susan Boldrey, Barbara Harris, Bonnie Hibel, Elaine Koffman, Leslie Schlesinger, Lucy Traub, Stacey Traub, and Amy Tuchler. The threegeneration blanketmaking team of Bonnie, Stacey, and Lucy was particularly heart-warming. The SAC holds an event at Robineau Residence at least once a month. On July 12, I helped Robineau s director, Dotty Levant, present a program about humor. The residents answered questions about such things as what they find to be funny, jokes they remember, famous comedians, and TV comedy shows. As is so often the case, I was very impressed by their wealth of knowledge. They remembered so many comedians and knew details about their personal lives and their careers. We will treat the residents to ice cream at the Kosher Baskin-Robbins on August 9. SAC member Marcia Kanarek organizes the Temple Beth-El (TBE) volunteers who assist at the birthday parties that take place at CJE SeniorLife s Gidwitz Place on the third Wednesday of each month from 1:15 to 3:15 pm. To participate in this good deed, which is appropriate for children of all ages, please call or Marcia ( or imokydoky@aol.com). Randy Barr helped in June and July and Andrea Brown helped in July. TBE s Uptown Café volunteers on Sunday, July 16 were Merriel Chernoff, Terry Diamond, Bennett and Elaine Koffman, and Stewart Schram. Six servers are needed for Sunday, September 3. Volunteers, who must be at least 12 years old, work from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm on Sundays. Please call or me ( or BennettK@aol.com) to be a waiter/waitress at the Café. At the time this article was written, mid-july, the SAC was still collecting money to provide financial assistance to our Yad L Yad partners in Yekaterinburg, Russia, so that they can have a oneweek Jewish sleepover camp. TBE has been helping to make this camp possible since Please contact me if you would like to participate in any of these activities or if you have ideas about other things we might do to help repair the world. SHALVA Collects Cellphones, ipads and ipods Temple Beth-El has been collecting cell phones for SHALVA for many years. The phones are collected, then shipped to Shelter Alliance, a recycling operation in Florida. They pay SHALVA according to the blue book value of each phone. In processing the thousands of phones sent to them every year, they wipe clean all personal data and either refurbish the phones, recycle the parts or melt them down. Each year SHALVA receives around $4,000-5,000 just by collecting your old or broken cellphones. All of these dollars go directly to help SHALVA clients. ipads and ipods are now also accepted.

We invite you to attend an Adult Grief Support Group led by Noah C. Weinstein, MA, LCPC. Noah is a Northbrook-based psychotherapist specializing in grief, loss and transition. The group will meet at TBE on September 27 at 7:00 pm Open to all Remember A Loved One If you wish to honor the memory of a dear one, a most fitting, traditional and dignified remembrance is a memorial plaque. This permanent remembrance will give you great comfort for many years and will serve as a reminder of the place your loved one held in your life. A permanent memorial plaque is displayed bearing the name and yahrzeit date on the Memorial Wall outside the Sanctuary. Your loved one s name will also be included on the weekly yahrzeit list outside the Sanctuary on the anniversary of their passing and be read at our Friday evening Shabbat Service. The contribution to memorialize your loved one with a permanent yahrzeit plaque requires a donation of $750. If you have any questions, please call Joanne Gold (847) ext. 202.
