1 3610 Dundee Rd. Northbrook, IL Volume 240 February 2018 Sh vat/adar 5778 Dear Friends, FROM THE RABBI S STUDY Rabbi Sidney M. Helbraun They are priceless and free, move nations and break hearts. They can capture dreams and rupture souls. They create timeless bonds and are as fleeting as the air we breathe. Words. In the mouths of some they are holy, sacred and healing. Others use them to desecrate, poison and wound. There used to be a time when words were our bond, when we spoke them with respect, accepted their weight, understood that they were a mark of integrity. Today they seem to be tossed away carelessly. Or worse yet, used intentionally to deceive, hurt, tear down, mock and shame. Judaism has always taught the power of words. Perhaps because, like the soul, though they are insubstantial, appearing and just as quickly fading away; their essence, meaning, power and presence can live on for a generation and beyond. Words are both precious, and oh so easily forgotten. It was with words that God began the work of creation, uttering that famous phrase: Let there be light. It is with words that we create the most sacred relationships of our lives. Standing under the huppah we recite the words of our tradition: Harei at mikudeshet lee You are betrothed to me transforming ourselves from solitary individuals into spouses. Words, insubstantial, fleeting puffs of air, have the ability to turn acquaintances into family. The Torah makes quite clear that words should be uttered with care, that pledges and promises may not be taken lightly. Indeed, failure to keep one s word is a sin against God that required a sacrifice to atone for. Therefore, one is better served to act without having made the promise, than risk not living up to one s word. And then there is the name of God itself, a word so holy that it was only spoken once a year, by the High Priest on Yom Kippur; a name whose pronunciation we can only guess at. Once again, better not to speak it at all than to desecrate or defame God s name. Words, America is awash in words, unkind, hateful, hurtful, harmful, spoken by those who should represent our nation s virtues and values. And once they are spoken, others come along to spin, minimize, alter, transform; to deny and deceive rather than confront and accept. We need not always agree on the words we speak. Honest debate is a sign of a healthy society. But in our society we no longer debate ideas. We stand in the shadows and pretend that words once spoken do not mean what was said. I write these words on Martin Luther King Day, a man who spoke with integrity, virtue, authenticity, honesty. A man who dared to dream, to see a vision, to bring hope to a people and a country. A man who sought to build America, that it should be a beacon of light and hope, an inspiration to the world. America needs more leaders who will speak with honesty and integrity, who treat words with respect and dignity, who use the power of their speech to create and bring light into the world. 2 2 CANTOR S NOTES Cantor Faryn H. K. Rudnick, ACC February is Jewish Disabilities Awareness and Inclusion Month. This particular February also marks 18 years since my grandfather passed. I remember where I was, what I was doing, the time of day when I received the call that he was no longer with us. And, 18 years later, rarely does a day go by when I don t think of him. My grandfather was probably the most influential and impactful person in my life. 18 is an important number in Judaism. 18 represents chai, life; this month, I want to celebrate the life of my grandfather, a life that was filled with challenge and tragedy, but a life that was well lived and a legacy that will live on for generations to come. My grandfather, George (Gunther) Blumenfeld was born in Germany in At the age of 3 he contracted meningitis, and lost his hearing from the impact of the illness. He struggled he was bullied and had to learn to use his intelligence in new and different ways from those around him. In the 1930s, when he was a teenager, as Hitler rose to power, my grandfather and greatuncle began to prepare to come to America. For my grandfather, that meant taking lip reading classes. My grandfather knew that arriving to America with a discernable disability would mean receiving a one way ticket back to Germany, which would have almost certainly been a death sentence for a deaf 17 year old. When they arrived in America, my great-uncle and grandfather had to meet with immigration officers, as did everyone arriving to Cantor s Notes this land of freedom and opportunity. My grandfather was able to read the officer s lips and answer the officer s questions. Things were going very smoothly until my grandfather turned to leave. The officer asked one final question, but with his back turned, my grandfather was unable to hear. The officer got his attention and immediately questioned his lack of response. Quick thinking, my grandfather said he had gotten a cold on the ship and his ears were so clogged he was having difficulty hearing. You can imagine what came next, as 81 years later here I am, second generation American, living proudly, freely, and retelling my grandfather s incredible and heroic story. Life in America did not guarantee anything better for my grandfather. As a deaf person, he was told he had few options for a career, so he became a baker. He worked hard and worked his way up the chain; he was talented and people knew his baked goods were the best. He also had few options for synagogue affiliation, but remaining Jewish was important to him, so he took himself to the deaf synagogue in NYC where he was able to be a part of a community that embraced him and his disability. When my grandfather was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and his body began to fail, he refused to give in. He figured out how to live as a person with limited mobility despite being presented with challenge after challenge and living in a world that was not yet open to people with disabilities. Each day, when I think about my grandfather, I wonder and hope that I am living my life in a way that would make him proud. This February, this Jewish Disabilities Awareness and Inclusion Month, I will think of him, his struggles and successes, and I will celebrate his life and the legacy he left behind.

9 Member News 9 Meet Audrey and Len Rubin If we could help sustain the temple for the future, it is worth it. We have seen many organizations survive ups and downs because of endowments. Our family memories, Jewish education, spiritual learning, and community are here. This article is the thirteenth installment in a series of discussions with donors to the Legacy & Endowment (L&E) Program. Its purpose is to share insights about their connection to Temple Beth-El and why their generous support of the L&E Program is important to them. In this article, meet Audrey and Len Rubin, long-time dedicated TBE members, who share their thoughts with our membership. 1. Can you give us some background on your connection to Temple Beth-El? Audrey s great grandparents were founders of Beth-El in Chicago in the early part of the last century. Her parents, Reginald Holzer and Estelle Starkman, were confirmed at Beth-El, and later married at Temple Beth-El. Audrey and her sister, Bambi, had their Bat Mitzvah s and were both confirmed at Beth-El too. Our daughter Margot was recently married to Zeke Sulkes, by Rabbi Helbraun. So we are five generations of Temple Beth-El members. 2. What are some of the most meaningful memories as members of the TBE community? Clearly, the B nai Mitzvot of our daughters, and the marriage of our oldest daughter, stand out. But, so do confirmations and Hebrew graduations. We come to services or walk into the temple and see old friends from growing up at Temple Beth-El, or from raising our children and watching their friends grow up here. It is like old friends and family even if we don t see people for months. 3. Why did you take a leadership role in the Legacy and Endowment program? If we could help sustain the temple for the future, it is worth it. We have seen many organizations survive ups and downs because of endowments. Our family memories, Jewish education, spiritual learning, and community are here. We would be sick if it didn t survive. 4. What difference do you think your gift will make to the future of TBE? Hopefully, assure its continuity. 5. What advice would you give to others who are considering making a gift to the Legacy and Endowment program? Do it! Don t think of it as another routine ask. The Jewish Federation believes so much in the importance of our Legacy and Endowment program that they offer us financial incentives and training. It also allows the temple to run on investments and interest rather than having no cash in reserve. This is how the best centers of learning sustain themselves. It is a best practice. 6. Please share any other thoughts and insights about your relationship with the TBE community and the importance of your L&E gift to the congregation. Our family worked on every fundraising campaign and expansion in the history of Beth-El. How sad would it be if generations of efforts evaporated the next time there was a downturn in the economy. (See the photo of fifth grader Ryan Feinstein with the card he made and the photograph of a teen from Yekaterinburg holding the two cards that he drew.) The Social Action Committee (SAC) holds an event at CJE SeniorLife s Robineau Residence in Skokie at least once a month. On December 13, SAC members Stewart Schram and I played Wheel of Fortune with the residents and, because it was Chanukah, we distributed dreidel-shaped cookies from North Shore Bakery. As we were leaving, Dottie Levant, the manager of Robineau, told us that the residents really look forward to our coming and consider us to be like family. We will be there again on January 17, when we plan to play Yiddish Bingo. SAC member Marcia Kanarek organizes the Temple Beth-El (TBE) volunteers who assist at the monthly birthday parties that take place at CJE SeniorLife s Gidwitz Place in Deerfield on the third Wednesday of each month from 1:15 to 3:15 pm To participate in this good deed, which is appropriate for children of all ages, please call or Marcia ( or imokydoky@aol.com). On Sunday, December 3, my friend Dr. Natasha Stonov and I helped the fifth grade religious school students make Chanukah cards for Hatikvah, our Yad L Yad partners in Yekaterinburg, Russia. The students decorated the cards and we taught each of them to print his/her name in Russian. I took a photo of every child holding his/her card and my husband scanned the cards. Then I ed these things to Dr. Michael Oshtrakh, the head of Hatikvah. He printed the cards and photos and used them to make a poster that was displayed in Hatikvah s facility. The young people in Yekaterinburg reciprocated by making Chanukah cards for our students, which Dr. Oshtrakh TBE s Uptown Café dates for 2018 are: Monday, February 5; Thursday, March 22; Sunday, April 22; Sunday, July 15; and Sunday, October 21. On weekdays, volunteers work from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M. and on Sundays, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm Children who are at least 12 years old may volunteer, so this is a meaningful bar/bat-mitzvah project. Please call or me ( or BennettK@aol.com) to be a waiter/waitress at the Café. SAC member Joan Freud is again coordinating TBE s annual blood drive in memory of Robert Kaiser, the beloved late husband of former synagogue president Rosely Kaiser. It will take place at TBE on Sunday, January 28, You can also give blood at a Life Source location and say that your donation should be credited to NB66. Please consider doing this important good deed. Contact Joan ( or jfreud36@comcast.net) to arrange a convenient time slot.
