3 January 28 - February 3, 2012 Fire destroys 4 vegetable shops 4 vegetable shops on Railway Border Road, West Mambalam were destroyed in a fire on Jan. 20 night. Apart from vegetables, weighing machines and other articles were also destroyed. Personnel from T. Nagar Fire & Service Station, alerted by vendors sleeping on the pavement, put out the fire. There are about 170 shops on the stretch but no other shop was affected. They are also handing over a list of phone numbers of police officials and police stations in Bus hits senior citizen inside terminus A. Ganapathy (74) of Adambakkam sustained serious injuries in his left leg when the front wheel of an air-conditioned MTC bus (TN 09 N 8663) on route 576 (Kancheepuram-T. Nagar) ran over it inside the T. Nagar bus terminus at 10 a.m on Jan. 23. He was admitted in Government General Hospital and later shifted to Sri Ramachandra Hospital, Porur. He was waiting for a bus inside the terminus when the bus that hit him appeared suddenly from nowhere. He escaped certain death by swerving at the last second but was run over. Pondy Bazaar police are investigating the case. Commuters told Mambalam Times that they find it difficult to find out the bus timings and where buses on different routes are parked. Buses can be found parked even on Burkit Road for want of space in the terminus. The film has been released in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Marathi. Dayanand has composed music for 15 short films and TV and theater commercial advertisements. 5 January 28 - February 3, 2012 MAMBALAM TIMES Page 5 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY THE AVM STORY 97 Indeed, after the punch-powerful impact of the watershed movie of 1949, Velaikari, only a fistful few of mythological Tamil movies were made until 1967 when Meiyappan, with his characteristic drive and dynamism, took up the Prahlada story for production in Tamil and Telugu. Bhaktha Prahalada had S.V. Ranga Rao as the demon king in both versions and the child artiste of the day, Baby Roja Ramani, as Prahalada. (Later, as a young woman, she played major roles in Malayalam and Telugu films.) The Telugu version won the Andhra Pradesh State Nandi Award as the 3rd Best Film of Meiyappan also produced it in Hindi in 1967, again with S.V. Ranga Rao in the same role. That was not all. Seven years later, in 1974, it was made in Kannada too. The veteran Telugu filmmaker Chitrapu Narayanamurthy directed all the versions. In 1968, Meiyappan brought out a an excellent and successful melodramatic movie Uyarndha Manithan directed by Krishnan-Panju. It had Sivaji Ganesan, Sowcar Janaki, Vanisree, Major Sundararajan and Sivakumar in lead roles. The film won the Madras Film Fans Association Award for Best Music Composer (M. S. Viswanathan) and acting awards for Sivaji Ganesan and Sowcar Janaki. Meanwhile Meiyappan and AVM Studios continued the policy of producing pictures jointly with other film units and filmmakers. Meiyappan brought the leading Kannada filmmaker S. R. Puttanna Kanagal into the AVM-fold when he engaged him to make Sudarum Sooravaliyum (1971) with Gemini Ganesh, Muthuraman and Venniraadai Nirmala in lead roles. Puttanna ( ), as he was familiarly known, is considered by critics, cognoscenti as well as the crowds as the finest filmmaker in the history of Kannada cinema since its beginnings in For a period he was treated as a cult figure and his films were eagerly expected by the intelligentsia and middle class audiences of Karnataka. Besides Rajkumar, he is the only widely known Kannada filmland person outside his home state. He made films in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and also Hindi. He is considered as one of the ablest of filmmakers. Many of his films won awards besides doing well at the box-office. Some of his hit films like Gajje Pooje (1971), Shara Panjara (1972) and Naagara Haavu (1973) are hailed as classics of Indian cinema. Meiyappan introduced Chitralaya Gopu, screen-writer and talented associate of C.V. Sridhar, as Director of Kasethan Kadavulada, a rip-roaring situation comedy. It had well known stars Lakshmi, Manorama, Thengai Srinivasan, Muthuraman and Srikanth in major roles. In 1970, Krishnan-Panju directed for AVM a melodrama Anaadhai Ananthan which had Jayalalitha and AVM. Rajan in lead roles. Later it was dubbed in Telugu as Akka Thammudu (1972). Meiyappan s sons, Murugan-Kumaran directed the Hindi films Jaise Ko Taisa (1973), a revenge-theme tale with top Hindi stars Jeetendra and Reena Roy and Jeevan Jyothi (1976), with Vijay Arora and Bindya Goswamy. They also directed a Telugu film Pooja (1975) with Vanisree and Ramakrishna. Widely travelled, Meiyappan was devout and deeply religious, and donated to several causes including education. He also founded schools. Meiyappan passed away on August 12,1979. After his demise, his sons took over the mantle. And the AVM saga continues, its glory undiminished. While other studios in Chennai have closed, the AVM has continued. What is the magic? AVM. Saravanan, whose quiet dignity and amiability have made him a popular figure in the Madras social and business circles, recalls, I had just returned from Bombay by a late flight and reached home around midnight. My wife said that my father wished to see me. He was in bed and my mother and brother were with him. He told me that we should commence film production again and should never stop. I told him that all our businesses were doing well and where was the need to go into production again? Pointing at the AVM logo, Meiyappan told his son, Behind that banner is 50 years of hard work. Keep it alive as long as you can. Saravanan says, There was no argument and the AVM unit went to work. His blessings have sustained us and will continue to do so, I m sure. Ph: , Court raps Govt. for not filing reply in shops sealing cases The Madras High Court pulled up the Tamilnadu Government on Jan. 23 for seeking more time to file its reply in the batch of cases concerning sealing of 25 shop buildings in T. Nagar for violating rules. The Advocate-General seeks time to file a counter-affidavit. It is unfortunate that despite the matter being heard on many dates and going up to the Supreme Court, till date no counter has been filed by the State, observed the First Bench comprising Chief Justice M. Y. Eqbal and Justice T. S. Sivagnanam. The Bench, however, granted the Government time till Jan. 31 to file its response and adjourned the matter to Feb. 7 for further hearing. The batch of cases are before the First Bench after the apex court stayed its order directing the building rule violators to approach the court appointed monitoring committee to get the seals removed. The First Bench also directed the senior advocate for Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) to submit a chart containing details such as blueprints of the buildings that had violated norms, the extent of unauthorized construction by them and whether the plans were sanctioned or not. The judges said: We expect that the lawyers will not give an impression to the Supreme Court that the court was reluctant to hear the matter. More than 20 buildings were sealed by the CMDA and Chennai Corporation on Oct. 31, The matter is before the First Bench for a third round of hearing. HR & CE Dept. takes over Agasthiyar Temple The Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments (HR & CE) Department took over the management of Agasthiyar Temple on Raja Street in T. Nagar on Jan. 25 from the private management. According to HR & CE Department officials, the temple, located on more than 3 grounds, was constructed in It has a shrine for Agasthiyar and two other shrines. The temple was declared a private property. Many people started visiting the temple including film stars who donated large sums of money. Amitabh Bachchan donated a crown soon after he recovered from his injuries on the sets of the film Coolie, an official said. There were several complaints against members of the earlier management including misappropriation of funds but they went to court against the takeover of the temple by the State. In August 2011, the Madras High Court asked the private management to abide by the orders of the HR & CE Commissioner. On Jan. 24, the Commissioner appointed an official to take stock of the temple and its assets. Based on the order, the Department took control of the temple the next day.
