3 February 11,2018 Leviticus, 13:1-2, Corinthians 10:31 11:1 Mark 1:40-45 The life of our parish is guided by the parish mission which is to educate, form and transform persons into disciples of Christ and to foster their active participation in the life, work and mission of the Church. All parishes are called to be schools of discipleship assisting the People of God with the ongoing life long conversion required to be followers of Jesus Christ. It is in our parishes, families and in the world that we are living witnesses to Christ s love and the faith we profess. Stewardship Reflection for Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 10/11 The fate of a leper is a great tragedy at any time and place. In Jesus time, lepers were considered condemned, part of the plagues God sent as punishment. They were cast out of society and abandoned. In the Gospel, Jesus reaches out and touches a leper. He risks catching the contagious disease and heals the man. Are there those in our society or in our personal lives for whom we ascribe no hope, who we have abandoned, treated like lepers? Or as Christ s stewards of our sisters and brothers, do we risk reaching out and touching those who may seem to us to be unclean or not worthy of our time or attention?

10 HOSPITAL VISITATION: We are dedicated to visiting the sick because Jesus has shown us that our presence to them is not simply comforting but healing. Hospitals in recent years have been forced to carefully monitor visits by non-family members. Clergy, therefore, are welcome but must know beforehand, who is currently being treated in a hospital or other healthcare facility. Therefore, please notify us when a member of your family is currently or shortly will be hospitalized or in another healthcare facility so that we can be a familiar presence to them during their stay in a local hospital, rehab center or nursing home. Please call the parish office at and leave the name and location of your family member. If you re pregnant and don t feel like you have much of a choice, call these people. They don t want your money, they just want to help. 11 Sharing God s Blessings Annual Appeal 2018 is underway One Body, One Mission In his first letter to the Church in Corinth, the Apostle Paul shares deep insight into the great gift given to us in baptism. As Christians, we are members of Christ's body. Though many and each unique, our unity is rooted in the mission entrusted to the Church by Jesus Christ - namely, to proclaim the Good News, to pass on the faith to the next generation through formation and the celebration of the sacraments, and to care for the poor and most vulnerable. As missionary disciples, we seek to answer the Lord's call each day. Christian stewardship is one way we can respond to the Lord's call, as well as, assist our Church in serving those entrusted to its physical and spiritual care. Through the Sharing God s Blessings Annual Appeal, the Catholic community of the Archdiocese of Newark comes together in support of ministries and programs which provide social, educational, and spiritual support throughout Essex, Bergen, Hudson, and Union counties. A Basic Stewardship Question: Are You Searching for God? A priest told this story once to illustrate how important it is to identify what you truly value and then pursue it. He was a teenager, he said, and he and his cousin were playing basketball in his cousin s driveway. Suddenly, the cousin realized he had lost a contact lens. This was before the era of disposable contact lens. Back in those days, you bought one pair of hard contact lens and kept them until the next time you had an eye exam. They were costly, and people often found themselves on all fours searching for a missing contact. So it was with the future priest and his cousin. They scoured the driveway and even looked in the surrounding grass. Alas, no contact lens was found, so they went inside to have a soda. In the house, they told the cousin s dad what had happened. He immediately went outside and started to search. It seemed that he was out there forever, said the priest. He looked and looked and looked. And amazingly, he found that contact lens. Why did he find the missing lens and we didn t? Because my cousin and I were looking for a contact, but my uncle was looking for a hundred dollars. To the priest, this humorous memory held a deeper truth: when we know the value of something, and desire it enough, we will be relentless in our search for it. For Christian stewards, the search for God in our lives can never be a half-hearted, tepid response. It must be all or nothing. The search is a lifelong commitment. Thomas Merton offered a basic principle of stewardship: A life is either all spiritual or not spiritual at all. What is the stewardship question for me? Am I ready and willing to commit to the long search for God in my life?

12 One of the most exciting events at Saint Rose of Lima Academy is Multicultural Day! This year the focus was for each class to pick a Saint, research his or her life events, and then reenact how the Saint is celebrated in the country today. The students in Mrs. Carangelo s Second Grade class selected the beloved Saint Francis of Assisi! As the children learned about Saint Francis, they gained a deep understanding of just how much he loved everything in Creation and truly gave his life to serving Jesus. As a whole class project, Mrs. Carangelo wrote a poem, which the children preformed for the school. Then each child tried to imagine how his or her lines could be illustrated to create a class book from the poem. With their creative juices flowing, the students each designed a beautiful page for the book. What a wonderful collaborative effort of love! The class decided to write a dedication page in honor of Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, who continues the work of Saint Francis in our world today. A copy of the book will be sent to Pope Francis as a gift from our class! How exciting to think that Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, will be holding our humble book in his hands in the Vatican!! Maybe, just maybe, he might even write us back! A Catholic approach to excep onal educa on.

St Rose of Lima Cemetery Spaces Available Planning your cemetery arrangements in advance will allow a family to carefully consider all of the options available to them in a thoughtful and considerate manner. By planning ahead, you ensure that your wishes are known and carried out. Over the summer and fall, we constructed a new wall, cleared and fenced an area for additional ground burials in our cemetery. In addition, we also have availability in our mausoleum.
