3 March 12,2017 Genesis 12:1-4a 2 timothy 1:8b-10 Matthew 17:1-9 The life of our parish is guided by the parish mission which is to educate, form and transform persons into disciples of Christ and to foster their active participation in the life, work and mission of the Church. All parishes are called to be schools of discipleship assisting the People of God with the ongoing life long conversion required to be followers of Jesus Christ. It is in our parishes, families and in the world that we are living witnesses to Christ s love and the faith we profess. Discipleship is our invitation to continue Christ s saving mission here and now and through generous stewardship change the world! Are you new to the area or new to St. Rose of Lima? We invite you to consider enrolling in our wonderful parish. Fill out the form in the brochure in the church titled Gathered and Sent and drop completed form into the offertory collection, mail to the rectory, call Joan Schultz at or jschultz@stroseshorthills.org. You will be contacted to set-up a new member meeting. The meetings are held in the rectory on Sunday mornings at either 10am or 12pm. Stewardship Reflection for Second Sunday of Lent March 11/12 In today s second reading, Timothy is issued a strong directive: Bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God. For the early Christians this could mean torture and execution. For most Christians today enduring hardship for the gospel might include accepting ridicule or mockery, or the suggestion that we lack sophistication. Nevertheless, in his letters, Saint Paul is adamant that we should not be ashamed of being followers of Christ. Good stewards are not ashamed of their allegiance to Christ. They do not hide their faith. Reflect on this question: Are you willing to speak about following Christ Jesus no matter who your listeners happen to be? WEDDING ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS The Archdiocese of Newark has a long tradition of honoring annually with a special liturgy those couples in the Archdiocese celebrating 5, 25 or 50 years or more of Christian Marriage. These liturgies take place in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the mother church of the Archdiocese. On Sunday, April 30 beginning at 3 p.m., Cardinal Joseph William Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark, will offer a special liturgy for couples celebrating 5 or 25 years or more of marriage. On Sunday, May 7, beginning at 3 p.m., the Cardinal will be the celebrant of Mass for couples marking 50 or more years of marriage. Every couple in the Archdiocese deserving of such recognition, along with their family and friends, is invited to be present at the appropriate liturgy, says Cardinal Tobin. The presence of a large number of couples will give favorable witness to the strength and stability of Christian marriage in today s society. Registration to attend these two special Masses is required in order for the Archdiocese to extend appropriate recognition to their Vocation of Marriage. All interested couples are encouraged to contact Mary Jean Alfano at the parish office at by Sunday, April 19 to be part of this special day in the life of this local Church of Newark. The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart is located at the corners of Clifton Avenue and Victoria Avenue, Newark.

5 Stewardship Saint for March - Saint Patrick Saint Patrick, the apostle to Ireland, is one of the world s most famous and celebrated saints. His missionary zeal arguably matched that of Saint Paul, whose missionary activities, though oftentimes a severe struggle, remained in the territories governed by Roman law. Saint Patrick, however, was the first recorded Christian missionary to evangelize beyond the bounds of Roman rule and into the darkness of what was then considered the end of the earth. Patricius was born in Roman Britain around 385. His father was a public official and church deacon. He was kidnapped by Irish slave traders while in his mid-teens and forced into slavery; herding sheep on remote Irish hillsides under harsh conditions. Spending most of his time in solitude, he grew to trust in God and embrace a life of prayer. After six years, he made a dangerous and harrowing escape over land and sea that finally resulted in a return to his parents. They found him, at age 22, a serious visionary who sought holiness and friendship with Christ. Patrick entered the priesthood, and in time, was sent to evangelize the Irish. He was appointed the bishop of Ireland in 435 and established his see at Armagh in the north. The Irish were known to be wild, unrestrained and corrupt. But Patrick s success in making converts to Christianity was nothing less than astonishing, even to him. He traveled to most parts of Ireland, winning the hearts of the Celtic people by his deep faith, humility, simplicity and pastoral care. He took great measures to incorporate pagan rituals into his teachings on Christianity. Since the ancient Celts honored their gods with fire, Patrick used bonfires to celebrate Easter; and he placed the sun, a powerful Celtic symbol, around the Christian cross to create the now familiar Celtic cross. Patrick s profound witness to the Gospel eventually brought an end to human sacrifices, trafficking of women, and slavery in general. He is the first person in recorded history to publicly oppose slavery; a protest that would not be taken up again for another millennium. His writings reveal a keen understanding of stewardship as well. He wrote that whatever good he had been able to accomplish on behalf of the Lord, in his meager, unlearned, and sinful state has been a gift from God. Over the centuries, Irish immigrants would spread their devotion to Saint Patrick as they established the Catholic faith around the world. He is thought to have died on March 17, 461, the date which became his feast day.

16 Way Walkers! Last Friday, we kicked off our Way Walker series for Lent. We began in the gym for a delicious Soup Supper prepared by the Worship Cluster. Following the Supper we moved to church for the stations led by Cardinal Joseph Tobin who also offered a beautiful Lenten reflection which included some of his personal experiences. We were delighted to welcome Cardinal Tobin for his first pastoral visit to the parish since his installation as our new Archbishop in January. Thank you to all who served and participated in this beautiful Lenten tradition. Way Walkers will continue each Friday in Lent and all are encouraged to participate. Don t Miss it!

22 Fourth Graders at SRLA Study America, the Beautiful From Sea to Shining Sea the fourth graders at SRLA have studied the regions of the USA. As a hands-on way to solidify their knowledge of each region, students created maps of the USA and a detailed key to signify notable traits of each region. Their keys included symbols such a sheaths of wheat to depict amber waves of grain, mountainous peaks to represent majestic mountains, flat lands to represent our fruited plains, and rough waves to represent our seas. Students culminated their study of the regions of the USA by doing a close read of the lyrics and singing America, the Beautiful. 29 Thirty Days, Thirty Ways to Exercise Good Stewardship of Lent and Easter Is Lent slipping away from you? Don t worry, you have more than a month to be a good steward of the gift of Lent and the Easter Triduum. Here are 30 ideas to fill the remaining days of Lent. 1. Attempt a more intentional prayer life start a habit in the morning and before bedtime. 2. Read a book on Christian spirituality, one that will enrich your spiritual journey. 3. Make a prayer basket at home - slips of paper or construction paper hearts (invite kids to participate) writing names or intentions that each person around the table picks out before each meal. 4. Attend a weekday Mass. 5. Pray the rosary - even better if you don t mind bringing out your beads in public - on the bus, coffee shop or anywhere else people gather. 6. Join a Lenten Scripture group. Yes, there s still time! 7. Attend Way Walkers and pray the Stations of the Cross. 8. Make a point of experiencing the sacrament of reconciliation at the beginning and end of Lent at minimum. Consider inviting someone who s been away from the sacrament to join you. 9. Tell someone you re praying for them. 10. Don t tell someone you re praying for them and pray for them. 11. Give up meat on Fridays but don t substitute lobster - make fasting something that is truly sacrificial. 12. Resolve to stop engaging in rumors, gossip, and negative chatter that devalues others. 13. Begin and end each week with an thanking someone for all that they do. 14. Be sure to say grace at any restaurant you frequent (don t dodge making the Sign of the Cross either). 15. Buy a cup of coffee for someone living on the street but not until you learn their name and exchange in some conversation. 16. Pray before the Blessed Sacrament. 17. Reconcile with someone you ve hurt or aren t speaking to. 18. Invite someone who s been away from the church to attend Mass with you. 19. Make a gift to a charitable cause - make it a sacrificial gift, not what s left over. 20. Attend a parish event centered on faith issues. 21. Learn about the life of a saint, your namesake or perhaps our patron St. Rose of Lima. 22. Visit someone who s alone. 23. Send a note of encouragement to participants in the parish RCIA program. 24. Support our monthly food collection on March 25 & Make time for family activities that are faithrelated. 26. Keep a journal during the remainder of Lent about your spiritual highs/lows. 27. Make a playlist of spiritual music that you enjoy and share it with a friend. 28. Embrace periods of silence in each day. 29. Invite someone you know will be alone to Easter Sunday dinner. 30. Participate fully in the Sacred Triduum. Make room in your pew to give others a spot to sit.
