1 Calvary Caller NOVEMBER 2018 Shoebox Dedication Sunday is November 11 A publication of Calvary Baptist Church, Tupelo, Mississippi From Your Pastor This is the time of year when thankfulness and thanksgiving take center stage. When asked, people will give many different responses as to what they are thankful for. Of course, there are some answers that are consistent across the board; many of us could give a plethora of responses about what we are thankful for. It strikes me that thankfulness is as much a spiritual reality as it is an emotional reality. Scripture talks at length about our thankfulness. Philippians 4:6-7 is one such place. There the Apostle Paul encourages the Philippians to, "Rejoice in the Lord always." This is followed by the encouragement to be "anxious for nothing." An "instead" is then outlined that, "in all things, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, present your requests to the Lord." It is interesting here that thanksgiving is given as a way of prayer, and a guardrail against bitterness, hopelessness, and despair. Paul is giving a key based on the later encouragement in the passage that he has learned how to be content in all circumstances. Thankfulness and thanksgiving, coupled with prayer, are a pathway toward joy. Thankfulness also guards us from anxiety. So, what do you have to be thankful for? Maybe that is a difficult question for you right now. It may be that you struggle to come up with something. But, if we step back and consider thankfulness as a spiritual reality, then we can thank God for His salvation given in Christ. Thank Him for the hope that He offers to us for our future with Him, and be thankful for His presence with us through all things in life. The effect is clearly spoken of in the passage as Paul writes, and the peace of God which passes all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Let us remember that peace comes from our Lord despite our circumstances, through His Spirit and prayer with thanksgiving! Prayer is our lifeline, and as we approach 2019, it will be a priority for this body. Be on the lookout for how you can be a part of the prayer ministry of Calvary. Information is in this newsletter detailing some ways. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 21 OFFICES WILL CLOSE AT 1:00 P.M. AND NO EVENING ACTIVITIES. OFFICES CLOSED THURS. AND FRI. Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever. 1 Chronicles 16:34 1

3 Student Ministry I suppose it s a given that this Caller article would be about being thankful. I almost went a completely different direction. But I was reminded by Corey, my wife, of a recent conversation with Will at bedtime. We are teaching him to use the A.C.T.S. model for prayer (adoration, confession, thanksgiving, supplication), and we let him choose each night which part of the prayer he would like to do. One night he chose thanksgiving. When it came time for him to pray, he tried getting out of praying by saying he didn t have anything for which to be thankful. Corey and I began to list all of things he could express thanks for, and tried again. And of all things he could have mentioned, Will thanked God for this is exactly what he said his bottom. That went over really well. I share that silly story because I think there are times when maybe each of us struggles to find a reason to be thankful. Perhaps you find yourself in the midst of difficult circumstances. But the reality is that we always have reason to be thankful! I would encourage you to make a list of all those things: clothes to wear, food to eat, a car to drive, a house in which to live, family, friends, church family, etc. Even if some or all of those things are lacking, a follower of Jesus can always rejoice and be thankful for salvation in Him. This Thanksgiving, take time to give God thanks for His faithful provision! 4 Children's Ministry Children's Church November 11, 18, 25 10:30 in C107 Ages 4, 5, and 1st grade This year Samaritan s Purse Operation Christmas Child celebrates 25 years! In 25 years, more than 157 million shoebox gifts have been given to children in need around the world. God has done this by using local churches. Boys and girls around the world have a tangible expression of God s love given to them. Churches are able to partner in sharing the gospel in areas that might otherwise not be reached. The boxes seem simple and perhaps a tradition, but for the children that receive them it is life altering. The Gospel is shared every time the shoeboxes are delivered. The Gospel is able to transform families and communities. What a great way for us to be the hands and feet of Jesus! Let s pack some shoeboxes!
