Usually Saturdays were the day that we would compete. Coming to the start of the race was always a mixed experience. There was excitement for the possibilities, but also an air of uncertainty at what could not be planned for. I have lost shoes in the middle of races, had hurdles knocked into me by someone else, been run off of the track.anyway, you get the picture. There are a lot of things that can happen before the race is over. Life is a little like that. Beginnings are a tricky lot. We love them because they are a new start, but we also fear them because they bring with them unknowns. The beginning of the year is always a little like that. You may be in the practice of setting goals for yourself for the year that will follow. Those are always exciting as they allow us Continued on page 2... JANUARY 8 4:45 P.M. They also bring some nervousness because when a goal is set there is always the fear of failure. In Exodus 3, Moses experiences a type of new beginning. God calls him to go to the Pharaoh and instruct him to let his people go. Of course, Moses is skeptical and doubts his own ability. Yet God encourages him not to rely on his own personal ability, but instead to rely on the divine power that God demonstrates by speaking to him through a burning bush. While Moses was definitely not sufficient to accomplish this on his own, through the Lord's power he would watch amazing things happen. My encouragement to you, as you set out on this year, is to be excited for the new beginning. As you look at what you can do for the Lord this year, and as you hear him calling you to specific tasks, be confident in His power as your source. In His power there is Victory. Use the opportunity to evaluate where you are spiritually and determine that you will grow to where the Lord wants you to be. Serve him faithfully in 2017! Associate Pastor Back in July and in association with our COMPELLED BY LOVE study, we began going out into the community to do service projects and to engage in conversation with people. It was a beautiful way for us to be the church and serve in a variety of ways. This part of our NEXT STEPS is called DEPLOY...and in 2017, you ll have many opportunities to be part of Calvary s DEPLOYMENT! MISSIONS FAIR - On Sunday, January 8th at 4:45 p.m. in the FMC Gym, all those interested in being part of the MISSIONAL focus of the Church, are invited to come to our MISSIONS FAIR. Here you will be able to hear about some of the ministry and mission ideas that are coming up and also how YOU can be involved. In addition, a few out of town mission trips are being planned. Listen to those plans and see how it might work for you. Some of the areas of local involvement: Hilldale Apartments, Prayer Garden Restoration, 5K Fun Run, Prayer Ministry. Upcoming Mission Trips you will want to hear about: Ft. Worth, TX - July Working with the homeless. New York, NY - October Working with a ministry to Muslims. Clarkston, GA - dates TBA - Working with Refugees New Orleans, LA - TBA No reservations are needed simply show up by 4:45 p.m. in the gym on Sunday, January 8th. I m excited about what s ahead and how God is going to use Calvary to be a LIGHTHOUSE in this community and abroad!

3 Minister of Music Happy New Year! I trust you enjoyed a wonderful Christmas season celebrating the birth of our Savior. Now, we turn the page from December 2016 to January 2017 with great expectation for what the Lord has in store for us this New Year. Only He knows the mountaintops and valleys we ll encounter, but this we know for sure... He will be with us every step of the way. And our calling will be the very same: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself. (Luke 10:27) I encourage you to seek the Lord more passionately in 2017 maybe than you ever have before because He desires to have a deep, personal relationship with you. Isn t that amazing that He wants that? He really does. He wants to use you and me, as broken as we are, to accomplish His purpose, His plans, and His ways. There is much ministry to be done in your daily life at Calvary, locally in Tupelo, across our state and our nation, and to the whole earth. So bring on 2017! There are many places in the Music & Media Ministries you may want to serve this coming year. Here are some of those spots: Sanctuary Choir & Orchestra Senior Adult Choir Student Ensemble (7th-12 grade) Preschool Choirs (ages 4 & 5) Children s Choirs (Grades 1-6) TV Ministry - camera operator, TV booth personnel Sound board operator Projection team (screen in worship) May the Lord richly bless you in the New Year! Doug The purpose of music in the church is... Nothing more than, Nothing less than, Nothing other than The work of the church, which is ministry: Ministry to the heart of God in worship, Ministry to the Body of Christ in nurture & fellowship, Ministry to a lost world through evangelism. 4 Student Ministry Have you made your New Year s resolutions yet? Whether you have or haven t, I d like to challenge you (and myself). There is an old hymn called I Am Resolved, written by Palmer Hartsough in Space does not permit me to include all of the verses, but I encourage you to Google them sometime and read through the lyrics. For now, here is the first verse: I am resolved no longer to linger Charmed by the world s delight. Things that are higher, things that are nobler, These have allured my sight. As I pondered these words this morning, my mind wandered to images of a snake charmer. Whether it is a legitimate practice or not, the idea is that a person plays music on an instrument, causing a snake to be hypnotized. (Again, we are hindered by space, as well as my knowledge, as to whether this is real or not. I simply appeal to the images all of us have likely seen at some point, probably in a cartoon). The snake is supposedly charmed into a hypnotic state in which it has no control over itself. There are a host of ways that you can serve with Disciple Now! I have a few people coordinating the different logistical aspects (such as food and transportation). If you would like to help, let me know, and we will get you plugged in! I think this is a picture of many people today. The world s delight all the things the world has to offer, such as fame, fortune, or fun keep us charmed into an unhealthy dedication to things that have no eternal worth. Oftentimes these things cause us to lose control. They consume our schedules and our resources. They can even cause stress on the family, but because we are so charmed by them, we fail to see the potential damage. And, more importantly, they lure us away from being fully committed followers of Jesus Christ. I pray that each of our resolutions this year (and certainly mine included) would be no longer to linger in worldly things, charmed by things with no eternal worth, being under their control rather than the Lordship of Jesus. Instead, let us fix our eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2), thinking on things that are higher and nobler (Philippians 4:8), resolved to be functioning as fully committed followers of Him. 5 Children s Ministry Are you all excited? I am!! There are some great plans for the future and the best part...god is arranging it all! God has been so faithful and I know He will continue to be. I'm asking you all to pray. Pray fervently for the ministries here at Calvary. Pray that God is made known in them all and that He is glorified in every facet and detail. Oh, that is my prayer! I truly desire that the children we have the privilege to teach will see our passion for Christ. God has gifted us all in different ways so that we can glorify Him. I'm reminded of how God provided talents of different people to accomplish building His temple. He took care of it all! The body of Christ, this church, is equipped! How awesome is it that God has you here for a purpose! Please be in prayer about how you can serve Him. I look forward to the coming year!!!
