1 Calvary Caller JANUARY 2019 Church-wide Ice Skating Fellowship Sunday, January 6 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm Bancorpsouth Arena A publication of Calvary Baptist Church, Tupelo, Mississippi From Your Pastor Through his ministry at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London, Charles Spurgeon made a lasting impact for the Lord. His church numbered in the thousands, and the ministry of the church was far reaching. Yet it is noted that Spurgeon understood that he was not the agent at work behind the growth and ministry of the church. When people visited he would take them to the church's basement prayer room, and as people were there praying, he would say, this is the powerhouse of the church. Spurgeon understood that through prayer, God was blessing the ministry of the church. Colossians 4:2 is a short verse that demonstrates the importance of prayer. It contains ten words. It is offered as a part of a letter to a church that was needing a reminder of the preeminence and power, as well as the sufficiency of Christ. What Paul offers is a prescription for faithful ministry and gospel work. The first instruction given as he wraps up his letter is to PRAY! He also gives us insight into the nature of their prayers as he tells them first to continue, and that this continuance should be steadfast. We see the encouragement to an abiding and active prayer life. This verse tells us so much about the nature of how our prayer life should be. Of all the things he could challenge them to, prayer is the encouragement. This leaves us with the question, How important is this to me? It was this important to Paul, how do I prioritize it? Paul understood that for the individual and for the church, their growth will only go as deep as their prayer life. Prayer provides communion with God. This is why we have dubbed 2019 as a year of prayer and praise. In recognition of the power of God and the call to pray, we want to fall before him and practice what Paul encouraged us to do. So a year of prayer. We also understand that God is able to do, immeasurably more than all that we could ask or imagine. So as we pray, we must be ready to praise him for answered prayer. So will you pray in 2019? I am thankful for those who have come to our prayer ministry interest meetings, and helped to organize this focus. Here are a few details you should know. Each month, there will be a prayer guide available to you. Beginning in February, you will find it in the caller, in Sunday School, around the church facilities, and online. This will be a guide to pray for concerns spanning our church, town, state, country, and world. Our desire is that you would take up the call to pray and organize events that prioritize this. In family devotions, through Sunday School fellowships, at cottage prayer meetings, in our worship, and though special events we organize, we want prayer to be our song. We also need your help in making sure the word gets out about this. You can help us to make this year of prayer and praise the best year it can be. Of course you will be hearing much more about this in the days and weeks to come. I look forward to the ways that we will praise God as we see his faithfulness demonstrated to us! 3 Student Ministry Beginning in January, we will start walking through the book of Joshua in a tenweek series called Battle Cry. The entire book is a recollection of God s people conquering the Promised Land, but the overarching theme is that God conquered the land for them. The people are encouraged that "God is with you wherever you go (1:9), that the LORD has given you the land (2:9), that God would without fail drive out from before them the inhabitants of the land (3:10), etc. The whole book focuses on the fact that, although God s people were actively involved in the conquering of the land, the work was done by God Almighty. I m not sure what battles you will face in But I know that you can trust God to be with you whether the outcome is favorable or not. Our battle cry as followers of Jesus should be For the glory and honor of Jesus Christ alone! As you face battles this year, may you be strengthened by God s power and grace to live a life that brings Him honor and glory. 4 Children's Ministry Children's Church January 13, :30 in C107 Ages 4, 5, and 1st grade January is all about fresh starts and new beginnings. I love setting new goals and focusing on how the Lord is wanting to work here at Calvary in While many of us are analyzing ourselves and setting goals I would like to ask you to pray about how the Lord can use you in the life of a child. This year Calvary will begin an Orphan Care Ministry. Taking care of children in need looks different for each one of us, but we can all do it! As you look around Calvary Baptist Church in the coming months, you will notice opportunities that will be provided for you to care for the children that need a loving home. I have no doubt that each one of us will be touched by this ministry and that God is going to use it to bring Himself glory!
