Mt. Vernon Council #5998 KC Quote August 2018 Page 5 Grand Knight s Message SK PGK Leo McCormick Brothers, August 2018 Welcome to the middle of summer and the Month of the Immaculate Heart of Mary! Last month we commended our immediate PGK Rob Reynolds during our July social, Is He Worthy? As in past years, this was a great success and a lot fun which I think was even shared by our worthy PGK and Trustee Rob Reynolds. I d like to thank PGK Bob Reynolds, PGK Jim McCracken, and all who brought the delicious sides for a great spread of food. A special thanks to PGK Tom Fahey, our worthy judges, and all who participated to make the festivities entertaining and helped in determining that our immediate PGK is, in fact, worthy! A couple of weeks ago I ed my Grand Knight s letter discussing my three goals for this Fraternal Year: 1. To infuse more spirituality into our events. 2. To encourage fraternity. 3. To add more community focused activities. Along with the letter I sent a survey to give brothers an opportunity to provide their thoughts on Council activities, goals, and how we can help each other more. Thank you to those few who have returned the survey, or provided comments in response to the survey. I am still hoping more brothers will respond. Please know that I do want to hear your thoughts and will work to answer your concerns, incorporate your thoughts, and encourage your efforts to improve our council and increase our charitable works. Even if you think it s already been said, please send your comments anyway. If you need a copy of the survey, please let me know. We had our first Family Movie Night the last Sunday of July showing The Incredibles. I d like to thank Worthy PGK Bob Reynolds and Worthy PGK Tom Fahey for their help to make this a success. This was the first attempt to make more events available to bring our families together. We will have another Family Movie Night the last Sunday in August when we ll show Follow Me Boys. I ve been in discussion with our pastors and Youth Ministers to seek ways to improve our service to our parishes and families. We have plans for more events as an outreach to both families and the youth. Our August social will feature two conversion talks. I d like to thank my lovely wife, Tanti, and SK Marvin Spychaj s lovely wife, Cheryl, who have graciously agreed to give there conversion stories. Please come and show your support and enjoy a delicious pot luck dinner. It s always good to take the time to see how God has worked in someone else s life, to help us appreciate how He is working in our own. We are already in the planning stages for our four fundraisers this year, Oktoberfest, St. Patrick s Day, KOVAR, and the Wild Game Feast. We are hoping that getting a head start on our efforts will provide a greater opportunity for God to bless others through our charitable works. If you have an interest in helping with these worthy causes, we can use your help!

Page 6 KC Quote August 2018 Mt. Vernon Council #5998 Grand Knight Message (continued) We are working to incorporate the four new programs required for the Columbian Award into our schedule: The Consecration to the Holy Family, Novena for Life, Helping Hands and the Spiritual Reflection Program. Please send your thoughts or recommendations. May God continue to richly bless you this summer and grant you all much needed rest before school and the busyness of life takes a hold of us all again. Vivat Jesus! Leo Bingo Bingo occurs every Friday evening and on the first Sunday s of the month. In August, that means on Friday, the 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, and 31st, as well as on Sunday, August 5th. We can always use more floor workers, so consider coming out and seeing the operation. It is a well oiled machine, one that you can be proud of with people like SK Larry Dietrick, and his wife Debbie as well as Tim McCauley. They make our Bingo special for the patrons and all who work there. Hope to see you there soon, and you too can be a regular (worker) at Bingo. Maurice Chau

From the Board Room! Mt. Vernon Council #5998 KC Quote August 2018 Page 7 Mount Vernon Columbus Club, Inc. July 31, 2018 It has been sizzling outside and summer is certainly here but nice and cool in our Hall, which appears to be supporting another banner year for our Bingo operations! The 4 th of July Bingo set another record that will go a long way towards the many charities we support and the 186 patrons that were there certainly seemed to be enjoying Independence Day with our volunteers! Many kudos to the Snack Bar Crew for an excellent job as they were turning out a tremendous amount of hot dogs and hamburgers and to our Bingo volunteers which made the day the great success that it was! If you are looking for a cool time on a very hot day in August, come on out and play some Bingo on any Friday night in August as well as the first Sunday (August 5). Volunteers! While setting records, we also set one for the month of July! We still need new volunteers for bingo. Even if you can help just a few hours a month, that certainly eases the load on those working every Bingo session and the fruits of your labor go to charity including one you designate so please give some thoughtful consideration and some time to supporting this critical activity. A Bingo Training Session is planned for September so mark your calendars for that when the announcement comes out but you don t have to wait until then to volunteer! We had our first meeting of the new Board of Directors. On July 9, it went very well and we are looking forward to an exciting and successful year ahead. Any ideas, thoughts, issues, concerns, kudos, etc, please don t hesitate to contact me so we can address things proactively! All members of the Council are members of the Corporation and we want to continue to working well and closely together as we move forward to promote and sustain activities that provide support to charitable organizations emphasizing service to Church, Community, and Family. That is it for this month. Thank you to ALL volunteers! Enjoy the rest of your summer, be safe and stay cool (and don t forget you can do that in the Hall during playing and/or working Bingo!) Save theses Dates! Bingo every Friday and the first Sunday in August Board of Directors Meeting on August 13 Tentative Bingo Training on 5 September! Joe Graf President, MVCC, Inc.

Page 12 KC Quote August 2018 Mt. Vernon Council #5998 For the Month of August Knight of the Month of August Philip Twumasi I have chosen Philip Twumasi as this month s Knight of the Month. Philip is a staple in the Snack Bar and helps when needed as a Bingo floor worker. He is there every Friday night to provide extra help, or be one of the few available to help. Philip s enthusiasm and steady work ethic is an inspiration to anyone who works with him. Philip had started strong when he first became a Knight 23 years working in the Snack Bar as he does now. Work and family commitments took him away until a year ago when he returned to help every night. Philip and his wife Marye are parishioners at St. Louis parish. Philip is an excellent example of a persevering Knight, serving wholeheartedly both the Council and his family. Make sure to thank Philip the next time you see him! KNIGHT OF THE MONTH FAMILY OF THE MONTH Family of the Month of August Jim, Sally Batchelder, and Kelly Batchelder-Long I have chosen the Batchelder family, as this month s Family of the Month. Jim, Sally, and their daughter Kelly, serve at Bingo as floor worker, selling paper Bingo games, working specific events, working in the Snack Bar, and Jim helps with Bread for Our Brothers several times a week. Basically where ever there is a need you can find a Batchelder helping out! At least, when time permits and Jim isn t called to take one of his classic cars to a movie set! Jim and his family are Good Shepherd parishioners where they also volunteer. Jim is a money counter and usher. The Batchelders are an example of a family willing to give their time, talent, and treasure in service of the Church and community.

I was assigned to sell the special six Bingo games and sell Bingo games from the floor. It was a great experience and helped me realize how blessed we are with our Council/Corporation Bingo operations. Yes, they have difficulty getting Knights to work their Thursday night games. Their operations are smaller than ours, so it was good to see a different operation and perspective. Maurice Chau

Page 16 KC Quote August 2018 Mt. Vernon Council #5998 Just thinking... A Toe Cramp? Chair back returns to upright. Occupant s left foot hits floor after some hours in the recliner. Leg tendon tightens. Big toe curls up. Cramp. Pain. Jump up? Walk it off? Accept the pain and try to relax? Offer it up in penance for sins? Jesus suffered cramps, say specialists who study the physiology of crucifixion. For three agonizing hours. All that time also fighting off suffocation and enduring the pains caused by scourging, nail-pierced wrists and feet, crown of thorns clawing his scalp. He was in the midst of his self-sacrifice to the Father. Trying to imagine Jesus pain may make a toe cramp bearable. As the thought continues, the tendon eases back to normal; relaxation flows down to the toe. Maybe the pain lessens quicker because it is offered? Possible. Certainly easier than for the saints that wore hair shirts and cilices to endure deliberate pain in retribution for their sins. Some members of Opus Dei are known to wear the similar irritants. Offer it up, sisters taught their parochial school pupils in the mid-20th century. Scrapes and scratches, insults and jibes, little flubs and failures, sacrifices and even successes, were to be offered to Jesus for offenses against God. Offerings are ancient. Wine poured on the ground, incense and animal carcasses burned, bread eaten. Those oblations were offered to gods by pagans; similar ones to God by Old Testament Chosen People. Even today, millions, especially in Asia, make offerings to idols. Pharisees professed scandal when on a sabbath Jesus hungry Apostles picked heads of grain. Jesus retorted by reminding those critics that David and his companions sated their hunger by going to the house of God and ate the bread of offering. In Leviticus, the third book of the Bible, the Lord spells out for Moses the rituals for the use of fires, animals, breads and cakes, as well as who may eat them and under what circumstances. There are cereal offerings, peace offerings, offerings for priests, for princes, for private persons, for special cases such as touching unclean animals, the daily holocaust, daily cereal offerings, sin offerings, guilt offerings, peace offerings, and portions for priests. Those come from biblical headlines written by editors of an early edition of The New American Bible. In the Revised Edition, Leviticus uses the word communion: This is the ritual for the communion sacrifice that is offered to the LORD. The original translation says peace offerings... presented,,, (Lv 7:11). Communion s definitions include receiving the elements -- bread and wine -- of the Eucharist. This ties in with the New Testament and oblation, a word found in the first and third of four Eucharistic prayers of the Mass. An oblation is anything offered in worship, especially the elements of the Eucharist, to quote a Funk & Wagnalls dictionary. The new translation of Leviticus fits nicely with the third Eucharistic prayer: Look, we pray, upon the oblation of your Church and, recognizing the sacrificial Victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself, grant that we, who are nourished by the Body and Blood of your Son and filled with his Holy Spirit, may become one body and spirit in Christ. Jesus in that self-sacrifice demonstrated for all times that he is Christ, the Messiah. The Redeemer of original sin. Measure the suffering of Jesus against that of a toe cramp? Hardly. Nonetheless, maybe such a pain should not be wasted. Carl Eifert

Page 18 KC Quote August 2018 Mt. Vernon Council #5998 Ladies Corner +JMJ+ August is traditionally dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The Immaculate Heart of Mary is often venerated with the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a devotion celebrated in June. In August, we also celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 15 th. So significant is this Marian celebration that it is a holy day of obligation. This month also marks the last full month of summer. My summer days are going by rapidly; how were yours? One of the highlights was definitely witnessing the time-honored tradition of Is He Worthy? social on July 19 th. It was very lively, entertaining, and certainly well-attended; the lounge was at full capacity! Past Grand Knight, Robert K. Reynolds is now deemed worthy! Congratulations! For August s social on Thursday, August 16 th, Cheryl Spychaj and I, will share our faith journey; an immersion of Reversion AND Conversion! Cheryl wrote her memoir recently, I Did It Afraid ; and it will be available for sale. We hope to see you there! On that note, mark your calendars for the following event: Monthly Ladies Lunch will be on the 2 nd Tuesday of the month, August 14th, 12:30pm, Cosmopolitan Grill, 7770 Richmond Highway, Alexandria VA May you enjoy the rest of summer with your beloved family and friends. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us! Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us! AMDG, Tanti McCormick

Mt. Vernon Council #5998 KC Quote August 2018 Page 19 Good Shepherd International Festival September 3, 2018, Monday Labor Day Good food, entertainment, visit your friends from church, and the Knights of Columbus Volunteers Needed! Volunteers are needed for the Good Shepherd International Festival. Our Council helps out with the parking detail and Italian booth. The International Festival will be held on Monday, September 3, For the Parking detail, contact SK Steve Higgins at and for the Italian Booth, contact PGK Rob Reynolds at The parking detail usually runs a couple of hours per shift - If we get 8 volunteers. The Italian booth will require a few more Knights. The more volunteers, the easier it and there is more time to enjoy the Festival!

Page 20 KC Quote August 2018 Mt. Vernon Council #5998 VOLUNTEER HELP WANTED! Told you I was not riding away. In cooperation with our President and our Grand Knight, the QUOTE now features a VOLUNTEER HELP WANTED section. For the last two years we placed concerted effort on getting more volunteers to help out with bingo and the many council activities and events. So an idea came to mind to provide a single point of contact for any member, family member, or friend interested in learning more about the myriad of volunteer opportunities they have with either the Mount Vernon Columbus Club, Inc., (aka the Corp) or with Mount Vernon Knights of Columbus Council #5998, (aka the Council). Each month we will list positions in need of your support and feature one or two each month as appropriate. If you see one of interest send me a text (preferred) or call my cell phone and leave a very short message (name, best way to contact you, and the position of interest). I will get back to you as quickly as possible to get you started. SO here goes: The Corp is in need of bingo volunteer help that includes: Floor Workers, Floor Managers, Pull Tab Workers, Counter Workers, Callers, Cashiers, and Bingo Managers. Volunteers may designate their annual earnings to a charity of their choice. The featured position this month is Floor Worker. Floor Workers are very important to the bingo operation. As Corp representatives they have the closest contact with the players and can help to build good public relations with them. It is important to be friendly and helpful. The floor workers verify bingos when one is called, take a copy of the winner s admission ticket for the Floor Manager, receive the payout from the Floor Manager, verify the payout, pay the winner, conduct floor sales and assist the players. Three floor workers are preferred at each session to expedite bingo and event game pay offs. Floor workers should remain in their assigned area to be available to retrieve bingos when they are called. The caller will not recognize a bingo until a floor worker has it in his hand. When the bingo is picked up, the floor worker should let the caller know they have a bingo by raising their hand, and holding up the number of fingers to identify the number of bingos they picked up (sometimes it is more than one). It is important to promptly retrieve the bingo for verification. Once the worker has the bingo, they should hold up their hand up until the caller asks for the card number. The caller will usually state, Go ahead and acknowledge the worker by name, e.g., go ahead Fred. The floor worker then identifies the color of the bingo card and states the card

Mt. Vernon Council #5998 KC Quote August 2018 Page 21 VOLUNTEER HELP WANTED! (continued) number loudly and clearly while facing the caller. The start of the next game could be delayed if the caller has to ask for the number to be repeated. So, take your time and call out loudly and clearly. The Council is in need of support for Socials, Ceremonials, Fund Raisers, Parish Events, Snack Bar Operations and more. In August and September alone our Council will support Pancake Breakfasts, the International Festival (Good Shepherd), Youth Soccer Challenge, the Knighthood Degree (3 rd Degree - State Council run), organize for the annual KCIC sales event and of course Bingo each Friday evening and 1 st Sunday afternoon. There are also the monthly socials which require planning and execution. Pancake Breakfasts require several volunteers to Flip for Parishioners! Shoppers, set-up workers, cooks, servers and clean-up workers are all vital to the success of these parish council events. Also needed are Knights who are willing to man the brochures and answer questions. This is a greatly needed and heretofore not exercised part of the Pancake Breakfast operation communicates who the Knights are to the parishioners. The breakfasts begin again in August at Good Shepherd and in September at St, Louis. The event normally begins at 7AM and ends when clean-up is complete at about 1PM. If you cannot support the entire morning a commitment of time during the first or second halves would be helpful. Each Parish Team has a unique menu that they serve up. I enjoy helping at both (will not say which one I prefer but they do not have patties)! SO, let me know how you can help and remember that more hands make light the work! Volunteering at Corp and Council events are a great way to get to know each other and to share new ideas on how to get things done! John Dougherty Cell: Text or leave a message!
