5 Mt. Vernon Council #5998 KC Quote June 2018 Page 5 Grand Knight s Message Brothers, SK Robert K. Reynolds What a year it has been! All year we have gathered together for social dinners to learn and enjoy each other s company. In September we celebrated 50 years as a Council and said farewell to one of our Founders, Peter Butler. In October we had our ever-popular Oktoberfest and the Children s Halloween Party. In November we remembered those Brother Knights who have come before us and served our community by preparing Thanksgiving meals for hundreds of local families and individuals. In December we held a great big Christmas Party with our Brothers from the Fort Belvoir Council and celebrated the birth of our Lord Jesus. In January we led hundreds of marchers to the March for Life in Washington DC to help defend the lives of unborn children. In March we had a lively St. Patrick s Day Party and held excellent Lenten Fish Fry dinners. April saw the return of our annual Wild Game Feed for Vocations. And in this past month of May, at our Cookout for KOVAR and Silent Auction, we raised over $3500 for KOVAR. Interspersed in all of this were numerous youth and church activities, and a record-setting Bingo Fundraising Operation. This month features our Annual Appreciation Dinner on Saturday, June 30 at the Council Hall. The listing of Council activities in the previous paragraph includes some of the highlights and special events from this past year, but the council benefited from the work of volunteers on an almost daily basis to move projects forward and support all of the great things we do as a Council. This Appreciation Dinner is to say thank-you for all of the great efforts put forward in support of Council activities this fraternal year. Everyone in the Council has been a part of this and is encouraged to attend. Finally, it has been my honor to lead the Council this year. I have been blessed to have such a supportive, enthusiastic, fun-loving group of Knights, Ladies, families, and friends to help make our events so successful, memorable, and fun. We as a Council Family did so much this year that has made a positive impact on each other, on our parishes, on the community, and on the world. Though my time as your Grand Knight is coming to a close, the great things we do as a Council will continue, and I humbly ask that you give our incoming Grand Knight, SK Leo McCormick, and the other Council officers your continued support and enthusiasm. Fraternally, Rob

6 Page 6 KC Quote June 2018 Mt. Vernon Council #5998 Mount Vernon Columbus Club, Inc. From the Board Room: June 1, 2018 Is this it? Three years already? Ah but it tis! The last three (almost) years are stacking up to be the fastest in my short 70 (almost) years! I wonder sometimes where the time goes but as Willie Nelson sang, Can t do anything about it now! Oh wait, yes I can! I can say that most of my time on the MVCCI Board of Directors was a great experience and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as President for the last two years. With tremendous help, cooperation and enthusiasm from many members and family members we have improved the appearance of our hall inside and out, made great strides documenting policies and procedures, updated and revised the Bylaws and most importantly made sizable contributions to numerous religious and charitable organizations. All of which could not have happened without the cooperation between the corporation and the council. Are some of you are thinking what? Sure there were times during events, projects, and meetings where one may have wondered about that. But in the end we accomplished the tasks at hand and improved operations only occasionally getting to where we agreed to disagree. A special word of thanks to our managers. Eve Dellett is the constant in the office for over eight years excelling at keeping business affairs in order and going above and beyond assisting the directors, members, family members and patrons. Tanti McCormick, already with the corporation for about 16 months, is keeping Spec Events well executed in spite of numerous requests for changes and special accommodations. One last plug for volunteers. We need you! If you are not already please consider committing to a volunteer slot at bingo, or the snack bar, one Friday a month and one Sunday a quarter. Your time can make a big difference and remember that at the end of the year each volunteer may select a charity to receive a donation resulting from their accumulated volunteer hours. This past year each hour equaled a bit over $19! Bingo Managers Larry Dietrick the $1,250,000 man, and Tim McCauley, and Debbie Dietrick where would we be without her! Thank each of you for your Over the Top commitments to the success of the bingo operation. Dan Klug. Only four years in our organizations but what a difference Dan made in countless efforts on both sides of the hall. No matter the task or project, always well done!! Thank you Dan and we all wish you the best in your well-deserved retirement. Be Safe! One of our Past Grand Knights, photo on the wall, coined the phrase Proud to be a Fort Belvoir Knight. If you know who he is a beer to the first one that tells me. I am borrowing from his phrase as I am Proud to be a Mount Vernon Knight! Thank you each and every volunteer for your support and hard work. This is not the part where the President Rides Away! That was Fr. Z the Padre and his favorite country singer, the Cowboy. I will around and pitching in where I can. So see you around the campus and Blessings for all you do! Thank you VOLUNTEERS! John Dougherty President, MVCC, Inc. The Saint Louis Spirit Award is to be presented during Graduation on Tuesday, June 12th at St Louis school at 8pm. The award recognizes the patron saint, Louis IX, born on April 25, At the young age of twelve, he was crowned King of France. Trained and guided by his devout mother, Blanche, he governed by holiness and justice. Amid the splendor of his office, his humility was profound, and his charity for God and neighbor was deep. He founded hospitals, visited the sick, and built libraries, orphanages, cathedrals, and churches, many of which are still standing. He would invite as many as nine poor people into the palace for the evening meal each day. The award is given to the one 8 th grade boy and the one 8th grade girl who best demonstrate the spirit and values of our patron St. Louis and who promote this spirit and these values throughout the school community. 2. The spring 2018 ALTAR SERVER RECOGNITION event will be convened June 24th (Sunday) at the Council Hall. Event Leader Brian Nienaber has planned a Kick-Ball game to be contested between parish servers in the parking lot! The Council is requested to attend and support our servers, meet their families, and participate in the game. We will grill hamburgers and hot dogs for the participants! 12 Page 12 KC Quote June 2018 Mt. Vernon Council #5998 For the Month of June KNIGHT OF THE MONTH Knight of the Month of June SK Robert T. Reynolds I have chosen my father, SK Robert T. Reynolds as this month's Knight of the Month. This year my father broadened his contribution to the operations of the Council by taking on new responsibilities as a Director for the Corporation Board and as the Snack Bar Manager. Both of these are serious time commitments that he added to his role as Council Lounge Bar Manager and his full time job before he retired this year. He also has continuously used his insights as a Past Grand Knight to make suggestions and keep council programs moving forward. He s a great example of the Past Grand Knights who have remained involved in the Council after their term a trend that has led to the success of our council over the past half century. He has also been a great mentor for me this past year, and I couldn t have done this job without him. FAMILY OF THE MONTH Family of the Month of June SK Jim, JoAnn, and SK Joey McCracken I have chosen SK Jim, JoAnn, and SJ Joey McCracken as this month s Family of the Month. Jim, JoAnn, and Joey are longtime (Jim was Grand Knight 25 years ago) members of our Council family, and they had such an impact on our Council since they joined in our mission to promote Charity, Unity, and Fraternity. As previously mentioned, Jim has been a Pat Grand Knight and Trustee to the Council. He also works in the Snack Bar, with the St. Lucy project, serves on the Corporation Board as the Treasurer, and is involved in countless other aspects of Council Operations. JoAnn is a steadfast member of the Ladies group and actively helps support Council events and projects. Joey serves as the Banner Bearer on the degree team and in the Snack Bar. Together, they continue to donate their time to help make our council and its events successful and lively. We can t thank them enough for all their hard work.

16 Page 16 KC Quote June 2018 Mt. Vernon Council #5998 Just thinking... Stick Out Your Tongue? Corpus Christi, the Feast of the Body of Christ celebrated June 3 this year, is timely for considering how Catholics receive the Eucharist. Some pastors encourage communicants to genuflect or bow then receive Holy Communion on their tongues. Contemporary Catholics generally prefer to receive Common on a hand and then place the sacred Host in their mouths with their fingers. American priests accept that way. So does the pope. Time was when the believer -- feeling confident he or she was in the state of grace -- would kneel at the altar railing, place folded hands under a large cloth running the length of the rail, and receive the Eucharist on his or her tongue. Back then, a new contingent of communicants would replace those who had received the Sacrament as the priest moved down the railing. Balustrades remain in a few older churches for architectural reasons. Vatican II permitted extending the left hand with the right beneath so that the Sacrament may be placed on the left palm and removed to the mouth with one s right thumb and forefinger. (Lefties may do the opposite.) All done while standing, after waiting in line. The Vatican s Congregation for Divine Sacraments in 1969 permitted that method in the United States. And it still is the position of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which does not rank the two methods. The bishops do say that when Christ s Blood is offered, carrying and then dipping the Host into the chalice is not permitted. A amen is required when receiving each species. Observation shows nearly all congregants now receive Communion whereas a half century ago, when churches generally were more crowded, quite a few remained in their pews at Communion time. Christ becomes our spiritual food at each Mass offered throughout the world each day. That did not change when the Vatican changed rubrics for receiving Communion. Neither did the inability to judge the state of the souls of persons observed in church, for only God knows that. Contending that more solemnity -- perhaps reverting to altar rail, railing cloth, kneeling position, reception on the tongue -- might encourage more righteous Communions is legitimate speculation. But only speculation. Reaching for an extreme example: those clandestine Masses in Nazi and Communist concentration camps and gulags celebrated by imprisoned priests using hoarded stale bread and smuggled wine were as valid as is the pope s Mass with pomp, ceremony and splendor in St. Peter s Basilica.

17 Mt. Vernon Council #5998 KC Quote June 2018 Page 17 Just thinking... Continued Individual Catholics are charged with self-grading of their adherence to Church teaching. Catholics, with rare exception, police themselves. A good confession returns a sinful soul to a state of sanctifying grace. Receiving Jesus on one s hand or on one s tongue is a matter for each Catholic to decide for him- or herself. The bishops make that point clearly. One commentator, perceiving the reception on the tongue as more reverent, likened that method as being fed the Body of Christ. He hearkened to Jesus telling Peter that if he loved him, to feed my sheep. Jesus was emphatic. He asked Peter three times and instructed him three times (Jesus may have been reminding Peter about his three denials) to take care of his followers. The Apostle assented. Jesus thus appointed Peter his vicar on earth. Hand or tongue, the practising Catholic believes in and reveres the Body of Christ. Worshipful Catholics adore the Sacrament with awe, deference, devotion, praise, humility.
