2 Weekly Message GOSPEL MEDITATION ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE "You are not far from the kingdom of God." What does it mean to be close to God's kingdom? In today's Gospel, Jesus is in a dialogue with teachers of the law. They know well the Law of Moses, with its complex codes, expectations, and punishments. What will Jesus say? "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength... You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Jesus effortlessly distills all the books of law into two commands. The simplicity of the Gospel message doesn't mean it's easy to follow. Far from it! The simplicity of the Gospel indicates its totality. Anything that requires the passions of our heart, the choice of our soul, the reason in our mind, or the strength of our body -- all of this ought to be animated by love. As you can imagine, that means pretty much everything! The love of God and love of neighbor is meant to flow into our entire lives. The Gospel can appear complicated because life is complicated. Not every outcast is easy to love. We lack the knowledge or compassion to heal everyone who suffers. Personal sacrifice is not always noticed or valued. In the face of the unknown, fear can be easier than faith. Life's circumstances can seem like obstacles to God's love, not opportunities. And yet Jesus' command still stands. As you reflect this week, examine those areas where it's easy to love. Thank God for them! But take some time to consider the people and circumstances that challenge you. Ask God to show you what it means to love there. How is He inviting you to enlarge your heart, strengthen your soul, open your mind, and persevere in your strength? How is He inviting you to love? Nov. 7 - Be There! Is the Church Relevant? It s a tough question many are asking today. Relevant to who and why? If it does not seem relevant to me today, why should it? If the Catholic faith and teachings really are a road map for a holy way of life and the core of that life is expressed within a family unit, we must not be afraid to ask the tough questions. Regardless if you have been a devout Catholic your whole life or you are struggling to believe any more, we invite you to join us for a night of laughter and learning as we explore the critical questions of relevancy and dialogue about concrete ways to strengthen the relational bonds for both our household and Church family. See you November 7, 6:30-7:30pm, St. Paul Church featuring Rich Curran, Parish Success Group. Families of all ages are welcome, applicable to children grade 6 and up. Childcare will be provided. Fellowship to follow in the St. Paul Cafeteria. The Scholastic Book Fair will also be open that evening. Partially funded by The Catholic Experience Fund 2

Be Who You Are P - Pray everyday R - Read Scripture daily E - Eucharist - go to Mass and Receive it weekly P - Participate in Parish life - we need you A - Ask for forgiveness - go to Reconciliation R - Reach out to the Least e - evangelize - share Jesus with others - the Bereavement Ministry Team CATHOLIC QUOTES - WORDS TO INSPIRE THE FAITHFUL "Our perfection does not consist of doing extraordinary things, but to do the ordinary well." --St. Gabriel Possenti I heard something very interesting this past weekend (ironically it was around the time of the shooting at the Pittsburgh Tree of Life Synagogue). The human soul is a lot like a wild animal. It is resilient and strong (to which the speaker I was listening to even mentioned how the Jews were able to come out of the Concentration Camps and love again), and it is shy. Online Giving is Now Available at St Paul Parish! For a moment I would like to reflect upon the shyness of the soul. When I think of the violence in our world, I rarely think of laws to combat it. Not because I don't think there is a place for such laws, but because at the end of the day it is about our hearts. Maybe not your heart - but our hearts as a country. (Detailed instruction sheet located in Gathering Space) 1. Visit stpaulgenesee.net and click Give Online 2. Select your donation amount and frequency. 3. Enter your account and payment information. We are shy. It is very scary to reach out to people we don't know or are different from us. In fact, in a lot of ways, we live in silos. We keep to ourselves in our little worlds and allow people entrance as it suits us. Early Bulletin Due Dates And if you feel a little uncomfortable reading this - well I fell extraordinarily uncomfortable writing it. I am just as guilty, if not more so, than anyone reading this reflection. The Holidays are almost here, which means there are several early bulletin due dates coming up. This year, we are coordinating these dates with St. Bruno s, in order to make things easier on Fr. Dan. Some of the dates are quite early, especially the ones after Thanksgiving! Thank you in advance for your help! Due Date Nov 6 Nov 12 Nov 19 Nov 26 Dec 3 Dec 7 Dec 10 Dec 17 But the thing about a lot of this violence, the solution needs to touch our hearts. Which means we need to be brave, get over our shyness and reach out to those other people out there. It is when we reach out of our shyness, the true strength of our souls can shine through. And our souls are so strong and so powerful. They are made in the image of strong and powerful God. The same God who says He is love. Bulletin Nov 18 Nov 25 Dec 2 Dec 9 Dec 16 Dec 23 Dec 30 Jan 6 Our souls are made in the image of Love. And when we risk becoming vulnerable we reveal this more than in any other way. Jesus, the God of the universe incarnate, revealed love most clearly when He hung naked on a cross. That's pretty vulnerable. It begins by reaching out to those nearest to you... and then reach a little farther out and you will find more people to touch... And...if you are looking for a place to begin... come to the RiverWest Food Pantry with me. It's a safe first step... check out the sign-up genius for more information. And... may we do all of our actions... big or small... with GREAT LOVE. 3

Questions: Barb Why Do We Do That?-Catholic Tradition Explained Question: November is called the month of All Souls. More recently, it has been called the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed. Can you tell us more about this feast and the remembrances of this month? Answer: November 2nd, the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, dovetails with November 1st, the feast of All Saints. The saints, our models of Christian living, are one with God in heaven. All the faithful departed are those who have died with hope and trust in a loving God who calls us to greater growth and development, even beyond death. This growth and development occurs in a state of being that we have traditionally called purgatory. While the Western Church has emphasized the cleansing and purifying nature of purgatory, the Eastern Orthodox Church has emphasized the growth and development aspect of it. Today, belief in purgatory allows one who has died in Christ to continue growing and developing before meeting God face to face. God continually invites communion with these loved ones, but some feel the need to continue growing and developing before entering into full communion with God. These November feasts vividly remind us of the rich reality known as the communion of saints. This belief stresses the strong affirmation that the church is always one in Christ. Death does not sever any of the bonds that unite us in Christ. That is why it is a fitting practice to pray for the dead and to ask them to pray for us. Just as we do that for each other when we are alive, so, too, do we continue that bond and concern for each other even beyond death. For the Kids Sharing the Gospel The man in today's Gospel reading was a scribe. It was his job to write out copies of God's word. Many of the scribes did not care for Jesus, but this one man really understood the heart of God's law-love. To love God and to love others is more important than anything else. Prayer Dear God, help us to love you and love others the way you want us to. 4

ST BRUNO Events and Invites National Vocations Awareness Week November 4-10, 2018 As Catholics, we firmly believe that God has a plan for our lives! He calls some to marriage, some to the priesthood, and others to religious life. Some remain as generous single people. Fully living our own vocations - and teaching young people how to discern God's call - is a serious duty, but also a joyful one. During this week please pray for vocations, and pray about how God is calling you to live your vocation more deeply. Encourage the young people in your life-children, grandchildren, students and friends to be open if God calls them to the priesthood or religious life. For information about vocation events or discernment resources visit thinkpriest.org, or contact the Vocation Office at vocationoffice@sfs.edu. 5 ST.
