2 Weekly Message Last Monday, we observed the 45 th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade decision. In the Encyclical, Evangelium vitae, highlighted the fact that present-day society has developed increasing sensitivity to human rights, but on the other, has not succeeded in applying them to the defense of the weakest. There is a pressing need to rediscover the authentic anthropology that illuminates and enhances the human dignity of every person, and the sacred and fundamental gift of life. The way one conceives the "quality of life", concerning which we often discover rather reductive interpretations, must take into account the transcendent dimension of the human person open to God, his origin and his goal. Man, though made of body and soul, is a unity" (Gaudium et spes, n. 14); as the image of God, he cannot become an instrument nor be reduced to the value of his qualities. We, today, are capable of deeply grasping the reality of life, which is not limited to our time on earth but is rooted in God and extends dynamically into eternity. Therefore this life cannot be limited to the earthly dimension, but is imbued with God's gift and marked by eternity. This is why it is essential to turn back to God. Only in Him will we be able to recover the meaning of man and thus of life. "Man's life comes from God; it is his gift, his image and imprint, a sharing in his breath of life. God therefore is the sole Lord of this life: man cannot do with it as he wills" (Evangelium vitae, n. 39). Today everyone must be committed supporters of life. "We need to promote a serious and in-depth exchange about basic issues of human life with everyone, including non-believers, in intellectual circles, in the various professional spheres and at the level of people's everyday life" (Evangelium vitae., n. 95). The value and defense of life is a sign of our times on the threshold of the third millennium and therefore represents an urgent appeal to bear witness to life, it is a true sign of the credibility of the Gospel message of the Lord of Life. It is a sign that speaks to the hearts of all people in order to open them to Christ, because "the Gospel of God's love for man, the Gospel of the dignity of the person and the Gospel of life are a single and indivisible Gospel (Evangelium vitae, n. 2). This commitment must pervade the social and cultural fabric, it must penetrate human ways of thinking, judging and acting, so that in the acceptance and protection of life, the beauty of selfgiving to others may be rediscovered. Fr. Dan Please join us Sunday, January 28th, 10AM 11:30AM Open House School Families, Parishioners, Relatives, Friends & Neighbors Please join us and nearly 8,000 Catholic Schools across our country in celebrating Catholic Schools Week, January 28 - February 2, WELCOME TO ST. 3 Got questions about life? Join the next Alpha course and journey with others to find out how faith and prayer and the bible and Jesus can help you answers those questions. Here s what some had to say about their experience with Alpha in the fall: Small group didn t follow a script It was easy, not intimidating We re all at different levels Very uplifting and encouraging, so easy [for faith] to become routine and complacent, Alpha was very approachable and joy filled, I enjoyed the small group time. Being in a group, being able to tell your story, listen to others stories was very good I m not a perfect Catholic but [the video talks] left me feeling like I want that feeling Learn more on the parish website, see what some Catholic leaders say about Alpha. If you re not sure about Alpha, come and see. Alpha starts Tuesday, February 6, 8:45am at St. Paul with light snacks and Thursday, February 8, 5:45pm at St. Bruno we begin with a meal. Contact Mary Kral for more information. HUMAN CONCERNS Dear St. Paul s and Loaves & Fishes, Thank you for generously contributing food to the Kettle Moraine Food Pantry, 44 bags of food and 96 bottles of detergent during the holiday months! The mission of the food pantry is to create a respectful, caring, and compassionate environment for clients, volunteers, donors and all involved in serving the residents of the Kettle Moraine School District. Sometimes it doesn t seem like a few cans of soup or beans could make much of a difference in the community, but it means the world to those who cannot afford to feed their families. Your contribution was vital in attaining our goal and we greatly appreciate your support. Thank You, Jolene M. Johnson Van Den Elzen, Director St. Paul Parish is conducting its annual Baby Bottle Collection for local pro-life Pregnancy Help Centers. In the past we have raised approximately $5,000 per year to help precious babies and their mothers. This year our donations will help the new pro-life center in Waukesha called Life's Connection. Return Bottles by January 28th. Thank you for your support and your generosity. Miscellaneous Donations If you're cleaning drawers and closets, please save the following items for various parish ministries: canes, prescription eyeglasses - Peru (basket in coat room) travel sample toiletries - St. Ben's (basket in coat room) newborn baby clothes - Heavenly Babies children's clothes up to size 12 - Casa Maria (call Nancy Reinbold) household goods - Reformation Lutheran Neighborhood Store (contact Deb Schneider) yarn Work and Pray If you leave donations in the Parish Office or Gathering Space PLEASE label the ministry so we know you've left them for that intent. FAITH FORMATION Keeping the Faith The Dreams God has for You P - Pray R - Read Scripture E - Eucharist - receive the Eucharist regularly P - Participate in Parish Life A - Ask for Forgiveness R - Reach out to the Least e - Evangelize There is a story people like to tell of a little girl who wins a plastic pearl necklace out of one of those coin operated thingies that give you a "prize" when you put the quarter in. This little girl loves pearl necklaces. She cherishes and wears it until the plastic paint is peeling off and it looks rather trashy. But still, to the little girl's eyes, it is beautiful. Her father began to ask her for the pearl necklace... but the little girl would refuse. She loved her necklace too much to surrender it. Finally, after weeks she gave it to her father saying, 'but I love it...' in that tearful way that only a child can do. Her father left the room for a moment and came back with a real pearl necklace. We often cling to things that we think we need. Yet... if we just surrender (even a tiny bit)... we begin to see the dreams God has for us. It is far more than we can imagine. I don't think that Peter, James, John or Andrew knew that leaving their nets behind would be the beginning of something far greater than any one of them. God has a plan for you. And for me. You are here for a reason. We may not see the full picture of what that plan is on this side of heaven, but we are here because God decided the world needed us here and now. That is why we have been loved into existence. But He won't force you to be a part of His plan if you don't want to. It requires a little bit of surrender on our part. It's not passive, it is a very active and amazingly strong thing to do, this surrender. It goes beyond the ability to explain it... it is something that needs to be lived to be understood. But first, to surrender... you have to know to whom you are surrendering... you need a relationship... What is Luke trying to communicate here and what connection does it have with Mary? Answer: February 2nd is exactly 40 days after December 25, the nativity of Jesus. Jewish law (Ex 13:2,12) dictated that Jesus, as the firstborn, be consecrated to God. This was done by the parents as they presented their Son in the Temple. Jewish law further specified (Lv 12:2-8) that a mother was ritually impure after giving birth, and that she had to wait a set period of time (forty days for a boy) before she was to offer a sacrifice to the Lord for purification. The convergence of these two Jewish regulations occasions Luke s account of both the Presentation of the Lord and Purification of Mary. These days the liturgical emphasis is more on the Presentation of Jesus. Luke highlights the role of Simeon and Anna, two righteous Jews who recognized Jesus as the longawaited Messiah and praised God for being able to see and experience such a marvel in their lifetimes. Simeon s prayer concerning the special role of Jesus states that Jesus is a light for revelation to the Gentiles. This phrase eventually originated the custom of blessing candles on this day which were to be used in the ceremonies, rituals and processions throughout the church year. Thus, February 2nd is also known as Candlemas Day. This day is indeed a rich feast to be savored.
