A LETTER FROM DR. JORDAN Church leader, Much like yourself, the local church is very dear to my heart. And it should be! Ephesians 5:25 states that Jesus Christ gave His life for the church, so whatever is important to Christ ought to be important to us as well. The Bible also tells us that the mission of the local church is clear and unchanging. Go, therefore, and make disciples The very first step of discipleship is a personal relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It is this first step that those of us who serve as leaders of the local church must communicate clearly to those we serve. When we focus on evangelism, we know that we are in the very center of God s will. I am personally excited about our 3 by 3 Evangelism Emphasis. This simple but effective plan is coordinated through the church s Sunday School. Tasking the Sunday School with personal evangelism helps us accomplish three specific things. First, it engages more church members in evangelism because the Sunday School is the largest organization of the church. Second, focusing individual members to pray, bring, and share the Gospel with their lost friends will lead to more people in our communities who hear the Gospel. Finally, we follow the biblical example of Jesus who intentionally trained the twelve people in His own small group to become soulwinners (Matthew 4:19). The winning of souls is not just the ministry of the pastor or Sunday School teacher, it is the ministry of every follower of Christ. You will find that the 3 by 3 Evangelism Emphasis is simple and intentional. It is designed for all churches, big and small, because it focuses on the individual church member. Every church member is asked to identify three lost friends, and then commit to three specific evangelistic actions: pray for each friend, bring them to an evangelistic event, and share the Gospel with them. Each of us is writing our legacy. What greater legacy could a follower of Jesus Christ leave behind than friends, relatives, neighbors, and strangers that he or she has led to faith in Jesus Christ. I encourage you to be a legacy-maker that writes eternity on the hearts and souls of all we meet. Dr. Anthony Jordan Executive Director-Treasurer, Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma 2

INTRODUCTION TO 3 BY 3 EVANGELISM Leader, are you a mountain climber or a mountain guide? I m not asking literally, but figuratively speaking, what is the role of the pastor or small group leader when it comes to soulwinning? Are you climbing the mountain alone or are you an evangelism guide helping church members reach the summit? In his book, Nine Minutes on Monday, author James Robbins describes an adventure he had with a team attempting to climb a 21,000 foot mountain in South America. Their guide, Osvaldo, had climbed many mountains by himself, but now he was not just climbing a mountain, he was leading other people to climb the mountain as well. Others who had little mountain-climbing experience and who were not in the same physical condition as their guide. Osvaldo s personal experience in climbing mountains was helpful, however Osvaldo learned that his new role as a guide was not to get to the mountain crest by himself; but to get other people to the top of the mountain also, and then get them safely down. Robbins goes on to share how Osvaldo helped the team overcome personal insecurities, physical exhaustion, discouragement, and even desertion by a couple of people during their team s quest to reach the summit. Sounds a lot like pastoring a church; or leading a small group, or Sunday School. Multiply it by tenfold when it comes to evangelism! Whether you are an accomplished expert or a novice, as the leader of your small group or church it is the leader s role to serve as the mountain guide of evangelism for the people. Some church leaders seem to be natural soulwinners; many are not and have to work at it. It is the role of leaders to guide those whom they lead to climb the mountain peak of evangelism; toward the mission of making disciples. We do this by sharing the Gospel with lost people that we come into contact with and then walking with them to become disciples who are making other disciples. Last year, the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma introduced an eight week campaign called the 3151 Challenge. Almost 500 churches and 70,000 people participated. The 3151 Challenge was simply an effort to engage as many church members as possible to pray for lost friends, learn a Gospel presentation, invite friends to church, and share the Gospel. This year we are introducing the 3 by 3 Evangelism Emphasis. Rather than an eight week campaign, the 3 by 3 Emphasis is a year-long effort to engage and sustain church members to pray for, bring, and share the Gospel with lost people. 3 by 3 is a process for pastors, Sunday School teachers, and small group leaders to use to multiply themselves by leading their people to climb the mountain of evangelism and bring the Gospel to those with whom they interact with on a daily basis. 3

Evangelism is often easier to do alone than it is to guide, coach, and encourage others to take up the mantle. However, the more people we can guide to the mountaintop of becoming an evangelist, the more lost people we will engage with the Gospel and the more rejoicing we will have in our churches as we see souls accept Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. We have introduced a couple of simple diagrams in our ReConnect Sunday School Initiative that help illustrate evangelism in the local church and the different levels of evangelistic engagement by individual church members. Those diagrams are the 3 Arenas of Church Evangelism and 8 Levels of Evangelistic Engagement. 4

THE 3 ARENAS OF CHURCH EVANGELISM We have discovered that most evangelism in the local church occurs in three arenas: program, pulpit, and personal. PROGRAM Events planned by the church that encourages members to bring lost people to events, such as block parties, Vacation Bible School, youth camp, a women s retreat, or a Men s Fish Fry for example. At these events, the Gospel is shared and an opportunity is provided for lost people to respond to the Gospel. PULPIT Evangelistic pastors understand the power of preaching to proclaim the Gospel and offer an opportunity for response. Examples of pulpit evangelism include sermons, revivals, or crusades. PERSONAL Personal evangelism occurs when Christ-followers share the Gospel with friends, family, neighbors, coworkers, or people they may meet during the course of their everyday life. For the average church, the largest part of their evangelism efforts take place through programs and the pulpit. Most churches struggle to involve church members in personal evangelism. The 3 by 3 Evangelism Emphasis is designed to engage more church members in personal evangelism by challenging them to pray for their lost friends, bring them to Sunday School and worship, and to share the Gospel with their lost friends. 3 ARENAS OF EVANGELISM PERSONAL PROGRAM PULPIT 5

THE EIGHT LEVELS OF EVANGELISM ENGAGEMENT Anecdotal research by ReConnect Sunday School and simple church observation reveals that church members are not all at the same level of evangelistic engagement. The illustration below shows eight different levels of engagement observed by ReConnect Sunday School. An overwhelming number of church members are simply unengaged when it comes to evangelism. The issue is how to involve these unengaged church members in personal evangelism. PERSONAL EVANGELISTIC GROWTH, ONE STEP AT A TIME The 3 by 3 Evangelism Emphasis is designed to help a church member grow in their personal witness. Many evangelistically unengaged church members do not take action when they hear sermons or Sunday School lessons on evangelism because they sense the sermon is at the Soulwinner level, and they perceive that the jump from Unengaged to Soulwinner is just too high for them. Some may view the bar as too high to jump and many church members choose not to jump at all. Applying the 3 by 3 Evangelism Emphasis to the Eight Levels illustration, challenging church members to pray for three lost friends is a simple step and will move the member from Unengaged to Spiritually Aware. A church member who invites or brings friends to Sunday School, worship, or an evangelistic event has moved to the Inviting level. Church members who share their testimony or the Gospel with a lost person have moved to the level of Testimony or Gospel Expression. Any step up the Eight Levels is a win for individual member, a win for their small group and church, and ultimately a win for the Kingdom as more believers become more evangelistically engaged and more lost people have the opportunity to respond to the Gospel! PRESENTATIONAL CONVERSATIONAL 8 LEVELS OF EVANGELISTIC ENGAGEMENT 6 MULTIPLIER SOULWINNER APPRENTICE GOSPEL EXPRESSION TESTIMONY INVITING SPIRITUALLY AWARE UNENGAGED

FROM PRESENTATIONAL TO CONVERSATIONAL SHARING Another reason many church members may choose not to learn a Gospel presentation is because they fear it may sound canned or memorized. However, many people need some type of outline or tract to help them share the Gospel, especially when they are first learning how to witness. Our approach in ReConnect Sunday School is to keep the learning outline as brief as possible. The One Great Hope Gospel outline is an example of using one verse (Romans 5:8), along with twelve key words to form a simple Gospel outline that almost any church member can learn. As church members learn and share a simple presentation of the Gospel, they will gradually grow from a presentational approach typical in the Gospel Expression level of engagement, to a more conversational approach generally used by people who are in the Soulwinner or Multiplier levels. As with any other skill, the more often a person shares the Gospel, the more natural it will become. This step-by-step approach to personal evangelism is easier for a church member to comprehend and actually accomplish. As the old saying goes, A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. Engaging our members through small groups and Sunday School to take the first step of evangelistic activity will help provide encouragement and accountability for them to become fishers of people (Mark 1:17). ENGAGING SUNDAY SCHOOL/SMALL GROUPS IN EVANGELISM In many churches, Sunday School and small groups are considered to be part of the assimilation process. Programs and events are generally used to reach lost people with the Gospel, and once they are engaged then they are more or less moved into some type of small group. Unfortunately, the model of using Sunday School as a second-step has three shortcomings which can negatively affect the church s evangelistic mission. 1. Most church members belong to the Sunday School. Using Sunday School primarily as an assimilation strategy disengages most church members from the church s evangelistic efforts. 2. The church becomes overly dependent on events and programs to reach the lost (see the previous 3 Arenas of Evangelism illustration). 3. The church s strategy often loses alignment. New believers get lost in the transfer from one church program to another church program. (Honestly, program leaders tend to cling to members rather than release them.) Equipping and engaging the people engaged in the church s Sunday School organization in evangelism streamlines the process and positively corrects the three issues mentioned above. ReConnect Sunday School connects church 7

strategy with the most members. Instead of being overly reliant on programs to reach the community with the Gospel, the Sunday School can engage more people in personal evangelism. When a new believer or lost person is reached personally by the Sunday School, they will already be connected to a small group for evangelism, Bible study, community, and mission. ReConnect defines Sunday School as the church s primary strategy to connect people to Jesus, His Truth, His community, and His mission. Notice what this definition says. First, Sunday School is identified as a strategy. Sunday School is not a program or an event. Instead, it is an ongoing strategy that involves most, if not all of the church s members. Sunday School is not the only strategy the church may use, but it should be the church s primary strategy. Ultimately, the church wants guests, lost people, and church members to belong to a small group or Sunday School class where they can be involved in ministry, Bible study, community, and service. By using Sunday School as a strategy, the church s evangelistic events can naturally involve participants to the next step of the discipleship process. Connecting people means that Sunday School is a relationship strategy. Personal relationships and community building are essential parts of a disciple s life and in personal evangelism. Discipleship is best done in community through smaller groups. Finally, the ReConnect definition of Sunday School includes the four primary connectors: Jesus (evangelism), Truth (Bible study), community (fellowship and ministry), and mission engagement. In other words, the discipling process is present in a holistic Sunday School ministry that is reaching lost people with the Gospel, and then leading them to full discipleship. SUNDAY SCHOOL IS THE CHURCH S PRIMARY STRATEGY TO CONNECT PEOPLE TO JESUSAND HIS HIS TRUTH, HIS COMMUNITY, MISSION. 8

WHAT IS THE 3 BY 3 EVANGELISM EMPHASIS? The 3 by 3 Evangelism Emphasis is a simple year-long plan to engage every church member to help change eternity for three lost friends by; praying for lost friends, bringing them to church, and personally sharing the Gospel. In this emphasis, every person in the church s Sunday School or small group organization is strategically asked to commit to do the following simple process during the year: My 3 by 3 Commitment During the next year, I will identify three lost people and do three specific actions. MY 3 LOST PEOPLE MY 3 ACTIONS: PRAY Pray for the Salvation of Others Pray for God to: Move them to repentance and saving faith (Luke 13:3; Ephesians 2:8-9). Tear down any strongholds that are keeping them from salvation (1 Corinthians 10:3-5). Make their heart receptive to the Gospel (Acts 16:14). BRING Bring people to worship, Sunday School, small group, or evangelistic events. Bring lost friends to church events so that they can hear the Gospel. Bringing lost friends to Sunday School helps maintain an ongoing evangelistic ministry to them and involves them in biblical community and Bible study. Many lost people will join a group if they are asked. Sunday School and small groups plan outreach oriented fellowships where guests can participate, meet people who are in the group, and hear group members share their testimony or Legacy Letter. SHARE Share the Gospel Learn a simple Gospel presentation. Learn their testimony by writing a Legacy Letter. Be bold and look for opportunities to personally share the Gospel. 9

PASTORAL AND SUNDAY SCHOOL SUPPORT FOR THE 3 BY 3 EMPHASIS Although 3 by 3 is simple by design for the average church member, there are important steps that the pastor and the church s Sunday School leadership can take to support and encourage their members to pray for, bring, and share the Gospel with their three friends. SUNDAY SCHOOL SUPPORT Sunday School or small group leaders, make the following three commitments: 1. Commit to enroll three new people into their Sunday School group. 2. Teach group members how to share their testimony by using a Legacy Letter. 3. Conduct an evangelistic activity every time the group meets. COMMIT TO ENROLL THREE NEW PEOPLE INTO THEIR SUNDAY SCHOOL GROUP Asking lost people to join the Sunday School group is an important element of evangelism. Enrolling someone into the group provides an opportunity for biblical community, Bible teaching, prayer, and evangelism. A healthy ratio is at least of percent of the group s enrollment to be lost people. Also, a general expectation is that about one out of every two lost people enrolled in Sunday School will make a profession of faith within a year. LEGACY LETTER A Legacy Letter is a simple way to help someone share their testimony of faith in Jesus Christ. At its basic core, a Legacy Letter is a written copy of the person s testimony. Sunday School teachers or small group leaders can lead their group members to write their Legacy Letter during the group meeting time. Group members simply respond to the following three questions: 1. What was your life like before Christ? 2. Who led you to believe in Christ and what happened? 3. How has your Christian faith helped you through a couple of recent life circumstances? A Legacy Letter should be between 250 to 500 words long. It should take about 2 to 3 minutes for the Legacy Letter to be read aloud. GROUP EVANGELISM ACTIVITY Imagine someone coming to a Sunday School class and never hearing the Gospel! Unfortunately, this tragedy is a common occurrence in Sunday School classes and small groups in many churches. Some simple planning on the part of the teacher can assure that at every group meeting, some type of Gospel activity takes place. The examples shared in the following model can generally be accomplished in about five minutes at each group meeting. 10

A MONTHLY MODEL FOR GROUP EVANGELISM 1st Sunday Lead the group to pray evangelistically for lost friends. 2nd Sunday Enlist 1-2 group members to share their Legacy Letter with the group. 3rd Sunday Share plans for the group s next outreach fellowship or church evangelism event. 4th Sunday Teach a simple Gospel presentation; or memorize an evangelistic verse; teach an evangelism activity like how to use a tract; or how to mark a New Testament. Conducting an evangelistic activity at every group meeting will help the group develop an evangelistic culture. PASTOR SUPPORT FOR 3 BY 3 The pastor sets the evangelistic pace for the church, so pastoral involvement is crucial. The pastor can help support evangelism in the church s Sunday School in many ways, but here are three specific suggestions that will greatly help the Sunday School engage in the 3 by 3 Evangelism Emphasis. 1. OUTREACH BURSTS Conduct three short-term weekly outreach bursts over the course of the year. Weekly outreach is a very effective strategy to not only engage guests who have attended evangelistic events such as Vacation Bible School, camps, or the occasional Men s Fish Fry; it is also very effective in training church members in evangelism. The pastor should consider planning six-week outreach bursts in the spring to coincide with Easter; summer to coincide with camps and VBS; and during the fall when guests are more likely to attend worship and events. 2. PASTOR S LEGACY LETTER Many church members have not thought out their testimony, and as a result they often miss opportunities to share their testimony and faith. Early in the year, encourage student and adult Sunday School classes to write their testimony, or Legacy Letter. As the pastor, you can set the example for the church members by reading your own Legacy Letter during a worship service. Your letter will serve as both a model and an inspiration for others to write their letter as well. Share the following outline when you read your Legacy Letter: 1. What was your life like before Christ? 2. Who led you to believe in Christ and what happened? 3. How has your Christian faith helped you through a couple of recent life circumstances? In addition, enlist a person or two in advance to share their Legacy Letter at deacon meetings, committee meetings, staff meetings, and other times as well. 11

Another great opportunity for church members to use their Legacy Letter is by posting it online, such as Provide church members with business card size invitations with the website location of their Legacy Letter. This card can be given to friends, acquaintances, and people they meet every day. Church members can also post their Legacy Letter on social media sites. 3. EVANGELIZE THE CHURCH S SUNDAY SCHOOL A great way for the pastor to encourage, support, and evangelize the entire Sunday School is by visiting a different class every week to fellowship and share the Gospel. Pastors should ask Sunday School teachers in advance if they can visit the Sunday School class. Ask for 15 minutes of time where you can share your Legacy Letter, and then share a simple Gospel presentation and an invitation to receive Christ as Lord and Savior. Be sure to respect the teacher s Bible study time when you visit their group. Sunday School teachers will be elated to have the pastor visit their group, pray with them, and share the Gospel. Be sure to include the children and student departments as well. Children especially may have questions about salvation and baptism. Engaging pastors in children s Sunday School helps humanize the pastor and makes the pastor more approachable, especially as children age and may need counseling, assistance, and discipling. Pastors also have excellent spiritual discernment when children are responding to the Gospel. 12

A SYNOPSIS OF THE 3 BY 3 EVANGELISM EMPHASIS Church Member Identify three lost friends Pray for their salvation. Bring them to church, Sunday School, or an evangelistic event. Share the Gospel with their three friends. Sunday School or Small Group Support for 3 by 3 Evangelism Enroll three new people. Teach group members to write their Legacy Letter. Conduct an evangelistic activity at every group meeting. Pastor Support for 3 by 3 Evangelism Conduct two to three, short-term weekly outreach bursts (6-8 weeks each). Lead your church by sharing your Legacy Letter as a model. Present the Gospel in every Sunday School class or small group. The 3 by 3 Evangelism Emphasis is a simple but effective process to engage as many church members as possible in personal evangelism. Reflecting back to the story at the beginning of this guide, the 3 by 3 Evangelism Emphasis is designed to help pastors and church leaders serve as evangelistic mountain guides, leading their people to become soulwinners. Most churches will have many people in different levels of evangelism, but a primary purpose of the pastor and other church leaders is to keep the church members evangelistically engaged and striving to become soulwinners. 13
