The rite of the Sacrament of Holy Orders by which the bishop, through the imposition of hands and the prayer of ordination, (calling down the Holy Spirit), confers the order of bishop, priest, or deacon to exercise a sacred power which comes from Christ on behalf of the Church. Pentecost Sunday Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies, 5, 9, 2-4 It will come to pass in the last days, God says that I will pour out a portion of my spirit upon all flesh. Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams. Indeed, upon my servants and my handmaids, I will pour out a portion of my spirit in those days, and they shall prophesy. And I will work wonders in the heavens above and signs on earth below: blood, fire, and a cloud of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the great and splendid day of the Lord, and it shall be that everyone shall be saved who calls on the name of the Lord (Acts 2:17-21). Those who fear the Lord, who believe in the coming of His Son, and who keep the divine Spirit in their hearts with faith are truly men; they are clean and spiritual, and they live for God, because they possess the Spirit of the Father who purifies man and raises him to divine life. The Lord attests that the flesh is weak and the spirit is ready, meaning that it can do everything that is within its power. If what is within the power of the Spirit in united to the weakness of the flesh, the stronger necessarily overcomes the weaker, and thus the weakness of the flesh is absorbed by the strength of the Spirit. He who finds himself in this state is not physical but spiritual, because he is united to the Spirit. Therefore when the martyrs give their witness and distain death, they are not acting according to their flesh, but in the strength of the Spirit.
