Thank you for your generous support of this Lenten almsgiving project! If you still have Rice Bowl money at home, please donate online at Click on Read Daily Reading and Prayer at the bottom of the parish web site home page ( ststephenbradshaw.org/) for a brief reflection on the daily Mass gospel reading. It will help you cultivate a pattern of daily prayer and a deepening relationship with God. Living God s Mercy: Ransom the Captive For the LORD hears the needy, and does not despise his own that are in bonds. Psalm 69:33 Page 3 God came to liberate His people, and he came to do this in the strangest way possible by becoming one of them, by identifying Himself with us, in lowliness, meekness, hiddenness and great compassionate mercy. If we look around our own lives, we are bound to be able to see a few people in our immediate circle who we can recognize as prisoners in one way or another. People in the grip of addictions, or intractable mental illness. People stuck in cycles of destructive behavior that hamper and constrict their lives. People who are simply severely limited by one thing or another, unable to really change their circumstances for reasons good and bad, real and perceived. Well, go visit those people! Be part of their lives! Be compassionate, as God was and is compassionate to you when He came to be part of your life! Sometimes we really want to fix people, and when we can t fix them we cut them out of our lives like a wart being excised from our bodies. But so many people cannot be fixed that way, and there can be terrible loneliness for such people when person after person walks away from them. That can become a type of imprisonment all of its own. [Christ s Passion, Death, and Resurrection was] the great ransoming of God of all captives. Let us be mindful of those still languishing in prisons literal and metaphorical, and see what we can do to alleviate their suffering and mitigate their isolation. ~Fr. Denis Lemieux, writing at Women s Detention Center Ministry: Be sure to watch the bulletin throughout the year for opportunities to show mercy to those at the Women s Detention Center through our contact, Sr. Kathy, who is their chaplain. Look for our Thanksgiving cookie bake and other times we collect toiletries and t- shirts. And we're doing another cookie bake on Saturday, April 23 at our #mercyinmotion retreat day. See more information on page 7 under Youth Ministry. The Only Jesus You may be the only Jesus your neighbor will ever see. ~Mother Angelica, from Mother Angelica s Little Book of Life Lessons and Everyday Spirituality PARISH EVENTS Please pray for the repose of the souls of: John Moscato William Malstrom Loretta Goodrich Dorothy Greenwood March 26 and 27 Mass attendance: 2,326 St. Stephen Parish App: Tap into Sacramental life. 5 April 10, 2016 Third Sunday of Easter Living Every Day with Passion and Purpose preliminary information St. Stephen is considering a trip to Living Every Day With Passion and Purpose, a special event in Pennsylvania on Saturday, September 17. It s not your typical church event! Living Every Day With Passion and Purpose is presented by internationally acclaimed speaker and author Matthew Kelly and the incredibly talented musician Eliot Morris, and it has been a life-changing experience for tens of thousands of people. Matthew Kelly invites us all to identify God's voice in our lives and the specific purpose for which we've been created. Matthew inspires attendees to apply the genius of Catholicism to every aspect of their lives. This is a unique message inspired by God and the teachings of the Church that promises to radiate in your life. Consider this: most people take more time to plan their annual vacation than they do to discover the voice of God and His plan for their life. See dynamiccatholic.com/events/passion-and-purpose/ for more information. Our parish is evaluating a bus trip to this event, which will take place at St. Alphonsus Parish in Maple Glen, PA, about 1 hour and 45 minutes from St. Stephen s. Please call Drew Bonthron at or ajbonthron@verizon.net if interested. We will need to commit to a count to reserve tickets by April 30. They have already sold 70% of the tickets available and will sell out all 1000 seats by May. If interested, please contact Sr. Angela for more information at redsdef@comcast.net, or Thank you! Quick Questions Q. I was hoping you can explain what gossip is. I always thought it was talking about someone's personal business or saying half-truths and innuendos. But is it also repeating what you heard about someone divorcing or getting in trouble? When does communicating information turn into gossip? A. A good rule of thumb is not to say anything that we wouldn t want said about us. Q. Why is skipping Mass such a grievous sin as opposed to murder, which directly harms the life of another person? Skipping Mass affects no one but myself and God. A. "Skipping Mass affects no one but myself and God. And God? Since when are human persons more important than God? Page 5 There is an infinite difference between measuring God by our standards and measuring ourselves by his. We have to start with God when we look at everything. Since he came first, he comes first. He is not just a bigger version of us. He has commanded us to "Keep holy the Lord s day," and he has a right to demand this of us. Anything of value in our lives (including human life) has value only because of his infinitely greater value. But Mass is not just a matter of acknowledging his sovereignty, which is what worship is. It is being present at the foot of the cross and giving thanks for the Passion and death that he endured for our benefit. He loves us so much that he underwent all that suffering to demonstrate his love for us in a way we could somewhat understand. To skip Mass is one of many ways of turning our backs on that love. Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P. Catholic Answers (
