3 St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church History As the oldest Catholic parish in Baltimore County, St. John Church has been serving the people of Long Green Valley and the surrounding areas for over 194 years. Our first church was built in 1822, during the term of office of James Monroe, our fifth president 39 years before the Civil War. We have seen America grow from a country of 24 states to the great nation that it is today. Worship Faithful to our Christian heritage handed down from Jesus through the Apostles, St. John calls all to worship in the unity of the Body of Christ. Participate in weekend services in our modern church building, or enjoy the atmosphere of our 1855 stone chapel for daily Mass and prayer. Community From the card parties and picnics of the 1800 s to the jousting tournaments of the 1900 s to our annual Spring Fling Carnival (now in its 22nd year!), St. John reaches out to bring the community together for fellowship and fun. Other community outreach programs include the North Baltimore County Wine Festival, Murder Mystery Dinner Theater, and seasonal family events! Learning We seek to bring all people to a fuller understanding and experience of their faith. Our children are led to grow either at our parish school or through our Religious Education program. Our Teens In Ministry trains our young people in their walk with Christ. Adults are invited to participate in one of several scripture studies, small groups, adult lectures, or parish missions. We recognize that knowing our faith helps us to live our faith. Service Faithful to the Gospel call to serve others, St. John parish reaches out to the local community and beyond. This past year, we provided 15,000 meals to the homeless of Baltimore City and Harford County, collected furniture and medical equipment for those in need, and financially supported a sister parish in Haiti. In 2008, we were honored with a Volunteer Service Award by Baltimore County in recognition of our programs that help neighbors and strengthen communities. Outreach St. John Church invites and welcomes all people to join our parish family. Reaching out through the modern media, as well as personal connections, our 1400 families seek to bring others into relationship with Christ and the Church. We are committed to living out the call to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ! Long Green Pike, Hydes, MD

4 Get Involved at St. John LITURGICAL MINISTRIES Liturgy Committee The Liturgy Committee works in consultation with the Pastor and the Pastoral Staff in the preparation and celebration of the liturgical seasons and the sacraments. Meeting on the first Monday of each month, the committee also promotes the work and training of parishioners for liturgical ministries. The committee continues to implement the work of Vatican Council II. Contact: Chris Longhenry, Readers Effective proclaiming of the Word of God at the Liturgy is the responsibility of the person who serves as Reader. During the liturgy, parishioners not only hear the Scriptures but receive them just as those first Christians did. Anyone interested in this ministry will receive training in proper techniques and delivery. Anyone aged 14 or older is welcome. Contact: Deb Jenkins, Eucharistic Ministers Eucharistic Ministers are key laypersons within the Church. They assist the whole community in the Communion rite. Their primary obligation is to assist the priest in distributing Holy Communion. In our parish, they assist in this sacred duty at each Sunday Mass and on other occasions as needed. Anyone aged 16 or older and confirmed is welcome to apply. Contact: Chris Longhenry, Ushers Our ushers serve the parish at Mass. Their ministry facilitates the collection, offertory procession, Eucharist and dismissal at the conclusion of Mass. Ushers serve by keeping good order in the Church, ensure the environment is satisfactory, and assist those with special needs. Anyone in high school or older is welcome to serve this ministry. Contact: Bob Torr, Altar Society The Altar Society of St. John's is a group from the parish who offer their dedicated service to the Church. They are involved in the life of the Church in a special way. They assist the Pastor in maintaining the Altar, Sanctuary and Sacristy. This includes cleaning and setting of the Altar for Services, caring for the vestments, Altar cloths, etc., and caring for the plants, flowers and decorations for special occasions. Contact: Deb Jenkins, Altar Servers It is a special privilege for a young person to serve at Mass. Parents should consider the serving of Mass as part of their child's religious education and encourage their youngsters to strive to attain this goal. Youths in grade 4 and older may participate in this very special ministry. Contact the parish office if you have a child that would be interested in participating in this ministry. Contact: Martha Schumacher, Children's Liturgy of the Word & KID CHURCH The mission of CLOW or Children s Liturgy of the Word is to celebrate the Word of God, and to have children hear and relate to weekend readings in language suitable for them. CLOW is geared towards children aged 5 to 11. The Sunday Gospel is read, and discussion or an activity is conducted by an assigned presenter. The idea is to make the readings relative and memorable to the children and to enhance their worship experience. The children return to the assembly in the main church during the preparation of the gifts as, together, we celebrate the Eucharist around the table as one family of faith. Contact: Karen Schafer, During designated Mass times, KID CHURCH opens in the Parish Hall for children under 4 years of age. Trained care-givers provide play and learning activities for infants and toddlers so that parents can fully participate in the Mass. Contact: Melanie Hecht, Greeter Ministry Greeters are prepared to welcome and assist all who arrive at the church doors for weekend Masses, thus sharing in the Christian mission of evangelization, worship, and service which, together, recognize each person as a sister or brother in Christ. Contact: Maria Bredehoeft, Prayer Ministry Qualified, trained parishioners serve as compassionate intercessors for Christ by praying after Masses with anyone with specific requests or needs. They witness to scripture s call to pray for one another. Contact: Dr. Verna Carson,

5 SOCIAL JUSTICE AND OUTREACH Haiti Outreach With the beginning of the Archdiocesan Haiti Outreach Project, there came an opportunity for local parishes to enter into a specific relationship with a sister parish and to offer spiritual and material help. St. John s has been involved with partner parishes to provide financial support, emergency hurricane relief, and subsidized education of the 1,000 school children in four schools, as well as providing a morning meal five times per week for all of these children. Contact: Jim Taneyhill, Prayer Network What would we do without prayer? This group is responsible for many answered prayers in the parish. Two parishioners keep track of all prayer requests and publish a weekly to all volunteers who have committed to include these intentions in their prayers. Contact: Carol Calvert, Medical Supplies Ministry St. John's collects medical supplies that are available for loan. Items vary from wheelchairs to walkers to crutches, and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. We accept any medical supplies that you no longer need, but are in excellent condition and could be used by someone else. Contact: Pat Loeffler, Prayer Shawl Ministry Prayer Shawl Ministry is a dedicated group of parish women. Our ministry begins with prayers and blessings for the recipients of our knitted, crocheted, or sewn shawls, and lap quilts. Those who need to feel God's unconditional love and comfort in their lives are given the hand-made items during illness, major problems, or for the celebration of sacramental anointing. Contact: Carol Calvert, or Teresa Asplen, Bereavement Committee This loyal group of parishioners coordinates the luncheon gatherings that follow funerals at the parish. They set up and clean up, prepare food, and serve the refreshments to grieving families in the church hall. Contact: Pat Turnbaugh, Our Daily Bread Collection St. John's serves the needy of Baltimore by providing casseroles once a month. Our target is to collect 100 casseroles, and generally we achieve this goal. Recipes and pans are provided. All you have to do is shop, bake, freeze, and deliver it to the parish. Casseroles can be brought in at any time. Deliveries are made on the first Monday of each month. Contact: Kathye Hayes, or Jim Novotny, Lunch for the Homeless Twice per month, a faithful group of St. John's parishioners gathers after the 9am Mass to make sandwiches and fill lunch bags for the homeless of Harford County. They provide decorated bags with an encouraging message, and the "baggers" include an assortment of goodies and lots of love. We work in conjunction with a few other area churches and distribute the lunches where the homeless gather in area parks and shopping centers. Contact: Pat Loeffler, Respect Life Committee God sends each and every person into this world as a gift. All human life has value and should be respected from the moment of conception to natural death. With Christ as our center, we are committed to uphold this beautiful truth at the parish level and within our community. This aim includes coordinating educational efforts, attending marches and demonstrations, assuring prayer for all life issues, supporting crisis pregnancy centers, and informing parishioners how we can assist through legislative or any other action. We work with the Long Green Valley Knights of Columbus and Archdiocese Respect Life Committee. Contact: Nancy Burke,
