1 OUR MISSION STATEMENT St. Pancras Parish, established in 1904, is a Roman Catholic Parish of the Diocese of Brooklyn. We are a people of diverse cultures, needs, and gifts who come together as part of the Body of Christ to live and share the gospel message of Jesus. We value family life and our participation together in worship, education and spiritual growth, service to human needs and social life. We seek to: Become a more welcoming and caring community, communicating new ideas integrated with traditional values. Promote harmony, reconciliation and healing among our members. Form a more enthusiastic faith-filled community. Establish responsible stewardship of our time, talents and resources. Embrace the Kingdom of God while on our mutual spiritual journey to eternal life with Jesus. In the security of God s unconditional love and empowered by the Resurrection, we will achieve these goals through the wisdom of the gospel and with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. 3 DEAR PADRE Why does my priest tell me it s not OK for Catholics to be cremated and have their ashes scattered? An answer from Catholic Tradition needs to start with reminding ourselves that respect for the dignity of the human person, who is a union of body and soul, is a core moral principle. We must keep this in mind as we make decisions throughout life and into death. Cremation is not forbidden by the Church, but the scattering of ashes is. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, The Church permits cremation, provided that it does not demonstrate a denial of faith in the resurrection of the body (CCC 2301). The scattering of ashes represents a denial of our Christian belief in the resurrection of the body in both its communal and individual elements. The cremated remains represent the human person and are a sign of how God blessed us through this person. Dispersing these ashes over a lake or field is inappropriate because final closure to our earthly life should include remaining with the community of faith, even in death, as we await the resurrection of the body. The remains also symbolize the individuality of that person, and burying them in consecrated ground or putting them in a columbarium honors the unique sacredness of the person s life. That s why Catholic cemeteries provide space for the remains of those who are cremated. It also provides a place where loved ones can show respect for the remains a place and space that doesn t exist when cremated remains are scattered. Sunday Scriptures Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) Dt 8:2 3, 14b 16a; 1Cor 10:16 17; Jn 6:51 58 The Book of Deuteronomy is written to the Israelites now safely in the Promised Land. After the pains of the desert, they enjoy prosperity and blessing. In the desert, they were given a food they had never known before. Manna was a new discovery and a gift for their survival. Now thy could enjoy fruit and meat, Moses commands them to remember when they totally depended on God. In their abundance, they run the risk of forgetting all God has done. They are asked to recall, to remember, to memorize. Cultivating our memory and recalling the acts of God s fidelity and providence are important to nurturing our faith. If we don t, our mind will glorify the forbidden fruits, or, like the Hebrews remembering the onions of Egypt, we will desire the food of our slavery. We also experience a deeper hunger, more persistent than the physical. We hunger for love, freedom, peace, and communion. Jesus satisfies the deepest desires of the human heart. He gives up everything to win us back, even his own body and blood. We find freedom in submitting ourselves to the one who lifts us up. Peace and communion come from sharing the cup of his love. Jesus truly satisfies our hunger and thirst. When we look around, foods are available that claim to be more satisfying. Some, in the absolute, can be venom: wealth, power, pleasure. Other realities, even the most pure, are beautiful but only partially nourish us, leaving us unsatisfied. The only truly filling food is that which the Lord gives. For Reflection Where do I go to eat? Who or what nourishes me? Am I tempted, enslaved, or weakened by less filling foods? Fr. Mark Haydu, LC 2017 Liguori Publications, Liguori, MO Printed in U.S.A. "There is much that we can do to benefit the poor, the needy and those who suffer, and to favor justice, promote reconciliation and build peace," he said. The Peter's Pence Collection unites us in solidarity to the Holy See and its works of charity to those in need. Your generosity allows the Pope to respond to our suffering brothers and sisters. The history of the collection is: The Peter's Pence Collection derives its name from our first pope, St. Peter, and from an ancient custom. In ninth-century England, King Alfred the Great collected a penny, a "pence," from landowners as financial support for the Pope. At present this collection is taken on the Sunday closest to June 29, the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION At the heart of today s solemnity is a eucharistic procession, held in many parishes, that calls to mind the procession of Holy Thursday, yet has a purpose different from the somber adoration in the night watch. In the late Middle Ages, a procession through the city with the Blessed Sacrament was an occasion of heartfelt joy and great emotion. In a time when people seldom approached the altar to receive Holy Communion, the procession through the streets, past homes and workplaces, was a vibrant reminder that Christ was with them as a dear companion and guide. Every year on this day, a joyful procession winds through the streets of Rome from the Lateran cathedral. A few years ago, Pope John Paul II, deeply moved sight of the throng accompanying the sacred host, said that we ought to feel profoundly united with the faithful everywhere in the world at such a moment. Before our mind s eye all the Churches of the world, from East to West, from North to South, are present. Originally this feast was on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday, but after the calendar reform of 1970, its title was expanded from Corpus Christi to The Body and Blood of Christ and in the United States it was moved to the Sunday after Trinity Sunday. Even though Easter season ended two weeks ago, this beautiful feast is aglow with Easter light. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS ABOUT MASS INTENTIONS Beginning in July, 2018, one English Mass each weekend will be offered for multiple intentions. Some years ago, all parishes were given permission to offer what is known as a Collective Intention Mass once a week. Therefore, we will begin this with the first weekend of July, The way it works is that up to four (4) intentions may be mentioned at one Mass. Each weekend, this Mass will rotate among our three (3) English language Masses. The purpose of this is to allow more parishioners to request a Mass intention on a Sunday for their loved ones. Very often, we are asked for a Sunday Mass intention, but there are none available on the date requested. Now, having more openings will permit us to offer the date requested. Please note, the prayerful remembrance itself is not divided or diminished. Since God s graces at mass are infinite, the benefits are shared, not divided. Of course, the choice of accepting this Collective Mass, or choosing another date, will always remain that of the one requesting the intention.
