1 OUR MISSION STATEMENT St. Pancras Parish, established in 1904, is a Roman Catholic Parish of the Diocese of Brooklyn. We are a people of diverse cultures, needs, and gifts who come together as part of the Body of Christ to live and share the gospel message of Jesus. We value family life and our participation together in worship, education and spiritual growth, service to human needs and social life. We seek to: Become a more welcoming and caring community, communicating new ideas integrated with traditional values. Promote harmony, reconciliation and healing among our members. Form a more enthusiastic faith-filled community. Establish responsible stewardship of our time, talents and resources. Embrace the Kingdom of God while on our mutual spiritual journey to eternal life with Jesus. In the security of God s unconditional love and empowered by the Resurrection, we will achieve these goals through the wisdom of the gospel and with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. 3 DEAR PADRE August 14, 2016 The Gospel rises above crass political posturing Who says the Church isn t political? Don t they endorse bills and candidates all the time? I m not sure that anyone has ever claimed that the Church is not political. As long as there are moral implications to political decisions, the Church will always give guidance to voters and politicians. I believe that the quality the Church is looking for is to be non-partisan. We cannot wed ourselves to party platforms or individual candidates. The Gospel rises above crass political posturing. Whenever the Gospel supports or corrects the politics of the day, we must be faithful to the teachings of Jesus and call all in power to account. In fact, it is supremely sad that some moral issues are even politically controversial. When the Church speaks up for the unborn or the poor, when we try to protect the environment or the freedom of religion, it is tragic that there is any political opposition at all. The Church is a prophetic voice to our society and has been historically in many societies. The goal of influencing elections and supporting candidates is far too small for the disciples of Christ. Our hopes are to evangelize voters, leaders, and all people in Gospel values. As a priest I am not allowed to endorse candidates from the pulpit, but I am required by the Church to faithfully preach our values, even if they are political or unpopular. FR. Sunday Scriptures August 14, th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Jer 38:4 6, 8 10; Heb 12:1 4; Lk 12:49 53 When I was young, one of my favorite pictures of Jesus was one of his blessing little children. How calm and peaceful Jesus seemed, and his eyes were full of love. In later years, I have been drawn to other images and art of Jesus holding, healing, and granting mercy to his beloved children. That image of Jesus is so comforting that I tend to forget that Jesus also disturbed the peace, questioned authority, and demanded complete obedience and loyalty. For first-century Christians, following Jesus often meant leaving family and friends, civil disobedience (not considering Caesar as a god), and reimagining religious traditions. The Christ who sows division is uncomfortable, but Christians in every century have had to speak out against evil and sin, especially when their culture s or country s practices lead people away from rather than toward God. Even here in the United States, Catholics have found themselves defending the dignity of all human life and economic and social justice for the poor, even when it meant challenging the prevailing culture and political climate. It s rarely easy to speak truth to power or popularity, and we have to guard against those who think they are always right or somehow above God. Jesus himself recognized that he would not always be popular, so he lifted up the two great commandments to love God and neighbor as the measure of how we should act even when those actions divide us. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Long ago, a signet ring was an essential part of the wardrobe of influential people. A letter or document would be sealed with hot wax, and a signet ring pressed into the wax would affirm the origin of the document. In the case of the pope, at least from the thirteenth century, the ring was used to seal public documents with hot lead, saving the red wax for private letters. The public documents were called bullae after the Latin name for the lead stamp, and we still call them papal bulls. It is not surprising, therefore, that a signet ring has long been bestowed as part of the inauguration of a pope. The ring is called the Pescatorio, or Ring of the Fisherman. It reminds the wearer of his link with Peter, and his responsibility to continue the apostolic ministry of fishing for human beings. Until 1842 it actually functioned as a signet ring. Now, each pope receives a new gold ring at the beginning of his ministry. It goes on the fourth finger of his right hand and bears some fisherman design, usually St. Peter casting nets from a boat, as well as the pope s name in Latin. A custom that endures for the pope, but not so much for bishops, is for people being introduced to him to kiss the Pescatorio as a sign of respect for his teaching authority. Another enduring custom is for the ring to be smashed and defaced at the pope s death, originally a way of preventing counterfeit deathbed documents. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

Our institute was founded by Father Carlos Miguel Buela on March 19, 1988 in San Rafael, Argentina. Four years earlier, Fr. Buela founded the Priests of the Incarnate Word with whom we share the same charism and constitutions. Both institutes also have contemplative branches. Our specific goal, following the call of Pope Saint John Paul II, is the evangelization of the culture. This appeal gives us a chance to inform the members of St. Pancras about our mission work in Guyana. As you may imagine, the mission in Guyana is in great need of support. The sisters maintain ten chapels and do pastoral work with children in school settings and with poor families in human and religious development. As you may know, Guyana is not economically stable at present. For this reason, missionaries do not receive much help from the local people who very often lack even basic necessities. Thank you for giving us this chance to speak at St. Pancras regarding this appeal. We would like to thank you for your contributions and generosity, which are a true grace from God. Please be assured of our prayers! The Altar Bread, Wine and Candles are donated this week in Memory of Rosa & John Pospischil at the Request of Walter & John. The Church Bells will ring this week in Memory of Gertrude & Charles Toellner at the Request of Jean & Kathy. The Saint Anne Candle is lit in Memory of Anna & John Gruber at the Request of Walter & John. We Prepare For Next Sunday: Twenty First Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: Isaiah 66: Second Reading: Hebrews 12: 5-7, Gospel Reading: Luke 13: SEEK NEW TREASURE Not on one strand are all life s jewels strung. 6 COMMUNITY NEWS FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION This week, on Monday, August 15, as people of faith, we will celebrate the Solemn Feast of Mary s Assumption into heaven. Since our diocese and nation are dedicated to the Blessed Mother under the title of The Immaculate Conception, all the feasts days of Mary are special to us. This feast occurs in one of the warmest times of the year, but it is still a beautiful feast day. However, when the feast falls on a Monday, the obligation to attend Mass is lifted. This Feast IS NOT a day of obligation this year. However, since many parishioners may wish to attend Mass, we will add a Mass on that day. Therefore, we will celebrate Mass for the Feast Day at 8:30 am, 12:00 noon, and 7:30 pm. MASS INTENTIONS AND MEMORIALS The Mass Book for January - June, 2017 is open for your Mass Intentions (English & Polish).
