3 PAGE 1 April 2014 Special points of interest: Pastor s Message Funeral Planning Getting Involved Stewardship Holy Week Memorials & Honorariums Trinity Lutheran Newsletter Pastor Kleimola s Message All's well that ends well, the peacock said as he looked at his tail. There is a story told of a peacock's pride in his appearance. A particular peacock is distraught over the condition of his feet. He cannot believe how ugly they are and grouses about this to any of his feathered friends who care to listen. The condition of his feet do not reflect well on his perfect appearance. He can't get past it! This is much like the lives we live, perfection on the surface, but further examination demonstrates ugly sins and imperfections that would lead to our embarrassment and ultimate condemnation. Fear in being found out and healthy fear of God's wrath against our sin could leave us lost. April contains a big end for us at Trinity. We are seeing the unfortunate end of Pastor Carr's ministry at Trinity as he transitions from his position as Senior Administrative Pastor to the role of Emeritus Pastor as his cancer and treatments prevent his engagement in the work of ministry. This end leaves many questions and uncertainties as we face the future of sharing Christ at Trinity. Another end we will see this April is the end of Lent as we see the life of Christ end in His Good Friday death on the cross. At the time of His death many questions and uncertainties were in the minds of His followers. We know those questions and uncertainties did not remain for long as the death of Christ ended well three days later in His resurrection. This resurrection is our hope that as we remain in Him we would live in Him and would have a blessed end this side of eternal glory. This month as we consider many ends (the end of cold weather!), I encourage you to take a moment and consider your final wishes and to make preparations for the church militant's farewell service for you. As Christians found by Christ, we are blessed to have the confidence of eternal life, yet we continually face the sting of death until Christ's return. In this month's newsletter is a brief form for you to share with our church office some of your wishes for your funeral service. If you would like assistance with this, please contact me at anytime and we can schedule a meeting. It is hardly fun to consider the end of life but the words of the peacock ring in my ears as we are certainly ugly not just in our feet but through and through. Yet, the plumage of Christ s glory shines through us through the grace of His gifts found in the forgiveness of sins. We are confident that He who began this good work in us will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ! (Philippians 1:6) Peace in Christ and His work in us, Pastor Kleimola March 26, 2014

At the young age of twelve, He told His parents, Didn t you know I had to be in My Father s house? (Luke 2:49). Caption Later He declared, I have come that [My de-sheep] may have life, and have it to the full (John 10:10). In order to give that abundant life to us, His sheep, The Good Shepherd [laid] down His life for the sheep (John 10:11). Our purpose as stewards of the Good Shepherd is to glorify Him and spread that Good News of His death and resurrection which brings us forgiveness of sin and life everlasting with Him. 10 Symbols of Easter Mary Anne Hibbard Many of our Christian celebrations are filled with symbolism and Easter is no exception. The first and primary symbol is the empty cross. During Lent and especially on Good Friday we often see graphics or other renderings of Jesus on the cross - or the corpus Christi and it reminds us of His sacrifice. But on Easter we see the cross empty. It could not hold Him. (In fact it couldn t actually Him on Good Friday. He chose to hang there and die for us.) The empty cross reminds us of Jesus victory over death and the victory that He gives to each one of us. Colors associated with Easter are primarily white - symbol of purity and holiness, also the newness of life that Jesus makes possible; and gold - symbol of Jesus as the light of the world, as well as the exaltation of Jesus as Lord and King. The purple of Lent symbolizes both royalty and luxury (Judges 8:26 and Revelations 17:4) as well as penitence and sorrow for our sins. The black used on Good Friday symbolizes darkness and sin and despair. It is completely obliterated with lightness and brightness on Easter! Easter lilies decorate our worship space and our homes. The white color stands for purity. The lilies themselves are a sign of the resurrection and more specifically, of immortality. We use some of the symbols of Easter all year long. Sunday, which was the day of Christ s resurrection, has been the chosen day for worship for centuries. (There were other choices in the early church, but that could be another story ) Another symbol of Easter used all year long is candles which remind us that Jesus is the Light of the world. On Good Friday we observe the Tenebrae a Service of Darkness, when the candles will be extinguished one by one, symbolizing Jesus dying on the cross, His life ebbing away. Finally the Christ candle will be removed from the chancel, because He indeed did die. The Christ candle will be returned - because death could not keep Him. He was alive again and victorious. We will leave the worship time in dimness, out of humility and sorrow for our sins that caused His death, though even then we know that the victory is complete. The paschal candle is lit on Easter Sunday and in many worship settings is lit for each time of worship from the Easter celebration until the Ascension (when Jesus returned to heaven and is no longer physically seen on earth). Even when I am privileged to assist in transforming our sanctuary from the stark darkness of Good Friday to the brightly adorned sanctuary for Easter morning, I am always amazed and awed by the transformation, which is only a dim symbol of the transformation that the Holy Spirit works in our hearts and lives because of Jesus work of redemption on our behalf. As we continue on our Lenten journey to the cross, may we be anticipating the journey s end at the empty tomb. We are already victorious Easter Christians - everyday of our lives!

11 Guatemala Mission Mary Anne Hibbard After His resurrection and just before ascending, Jesus gave us this promise and directive: You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be my witness in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth. Acts 1:8 To put that in Toledo terms in the year 2014 for us, it would be Toledo (and Maumee and Perrysburg ) and in all of Ohio and the northeast United States and to the end of earth. It s a step by step process, first here, then further out it s a multi-faceted responsibility. This summer a mission team from Trinity will be traveling to Guatemala to share the Gospel there! We are working through MOST Ministries in Ann Arbor, an RSO (Recognized Service Organization of the LCMS). In Guatemala, we ll be working Children s Christian Concern Society which partners with Lutheran pastors and teachers in Guatemala (and other countries) to provide Christian education. Our team will be partnering with local churches, offering Eyeglass Clinics. In many parts of the world, eyeglasses are so expensive most cannot possibly afford them! We ll be bringing eyeglasses with us, that have been donated, cleaned up and repaired and measured and marked. Using a simple technique, we will be able to assist approximately 97% of all people coming to our clinics. Local pastors and evangelists will be providing a witnessing at the clinics and (very importantly!) will be following up with the local people who have come to the clinics. We will also be providing a vacation Bible school experience for the children each day we do a clinic! Here s some ways you can assist: Pray for Christians in Guatemala, for people in Guatemala who haven t heard of Jesus as their Savior yet, for Lutheran pastors and teachers in Guatemala, for Children s Christian Concern Society who partners with Lutheran pastors and teachers, for the mission team who will working in Guatemala for safe travels, for effective witnessing work in Guatemala, for peace, insight, wisdom, and strength, and for all other outreach efforts of Trinity Assist with eyeglass preparations Groups are organized periodically from Trinity, traveling to MOST Ministries in Ann Arbor to sort and prepare eyeglasses for mission efforts like this. See Grace Harris ( ) Make witness bracelets through the efforts of MOST Ministries, thousands of witness bracelets are given out each year and always with a clear sharing of salvation in Jesus Christ (details are available at MOSTministries.org) Trinity Lutheran School does Trinity Serves projects once every trimester. Several classes this past trimester made almost 300 witnessing bracelets that we ll pass out in Guatemala. Support Fund Raising efforts as you feel led - Trinity Yard Sale start sorting out good stuff to sell! Watch for details soon! (And maybe, you can assist with the sale ) Silent Donation Board or other Direct Donation Prayerfully choose the size of donation you would like to make for this mission effort and put in the offerings (clearly marked for the Guatemala mission) (Watch for more details) Individuals on the mission team will each be paying for much of the cost of this mission work we are simply offering the opportunity to others who would also like to support this effort financially.

12 Trinity Lutheran School Music Mary Anne Hibbard Trinity Lutheran School provides a comprehensive music education and performance ministry for all students. From early experiences with rhythm and tone in preschool to choir experiences to various instrumental groups, a wide range of opportunity is offered. Not only is music an important part of our expression of faith - it is a blessing is many other ways. Music integrates mind, body, and spirit. It stimulates our brain s development, can improve academic achievement, and helps develop higher order thinking skills and music is just plain fun! Recently some of our middle school students traveled to Concordia University in Ann Arbor to participate in a Lutheran Schools Music Festival. Music students from 11 different school gathered for a day of simultaneous band, handbell, and vocal choir performances(!) plus a chapel service with everyone worshipping together in the university chapel! Participating music groups have the experience of being adjudicated, receiving helpful pointers and teaching, plus they get to watch other peer groups perform. Our vocal 5 th - 8 th grade Choir, directed by Erica Yang, earned a second, just one point away from a first. And our 7 th -8 th grade Handbell Choir, earned a first, with the highest possible rating within that category! We offer our congratulations to all our student musicians, as well as our drivers for the day! Making a joyful noise!

Remember this national Mission Grant in your prayers: REBUILDING NORD EST HAITI LUTHERAN SCHOOL Nord Est Haiti Lutheran School began as a result of the relationship between Rev. Daniel Paul, a native Haitian, and Rev. Sam Wiseman, an American, who attended seminary together at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana. They made a commitment to support the Lutheran church through Rev. Paul s work in Haiti after their graduation in Nord Est Haiti Lutheran School was established in The orphanage was begun in The two congregations where Rev. Wiseman has and is currently serving have sent short-term mission teams to help with construction of the original school and have established an organization to support the ministry. When Haiti suffered the traumatic earthquake in 2010, many schools were destroyed. Greatly changed standards and recommendations for construction should prevent this from happening with the new building. Enrollment has increased and children from the community and the orphanage are meeting in the church, office building and the orphanage for their classes. The school teaches in French and students study math, science, French grammar, Creole, history, social studies and geography. The students begin each day with prayer, they memorize Bible verses and prayer is intertwined throughout the school day. Attending church on Sunday is a requirement and they wear uniforms, for many the nicest clothes they have. The school provides a daily hot meal and for some, the only food they receive each day. Nord Est Haiti Lutheran School reaches out to the Haitian children through education. This grant will enable these students to become productive members of society and help in sharing God s Word with future generations. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = THE LWML TOLEDO ZONE SPRING RALLY will be held at St. Philip Lutheran Church, 3002 Upton Avenue, Toledo, Ohio on Saturday, May 10, 2014, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The program is titled TRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGH CHRIST.
