State. u u We love spending time at the beach Members and friends of will see a new face and hear a fresh voice in the pulpit this summer. I am pleased to announce that Dr. Michael G. Cogdill will serve in my absence as Sabbatical Pastor. Dr. Cogdill is no stranger to HBBC. He is well-known by many in our congregation and has spoken numerous times at Family Night services in our church. But to my knowledge he has not addressed our congregation on a Sunday morning. This will soon change, as he will preach most of the Sundays from mid-june to late August. A native of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Dr. Cogdill was the Founding Dean of the Campbell University Divinity School. He held this position from 1996 until Prior to this he was Chairman of the Department of Religion and Philosophy in Campbell s undergraduate program. In addition, he has served as Baptist pastor of two churches and as interim pastor of eighteen churches. Currently, he is Professor of Pastoral Leadership in the Divinity School at Campbell. Dr. Cogdill has earned degrees from Mars Hill College, Southeastern Seminary, and North Carolina State University. Mike and his wife, Gail, a retired teacher, have two adult children, both married: Jason, an attorney in Winston- Salem, and Joya, a public school teacher in Johnston County. They also have 3 grandchildren: Thomas, Hampton, and Emerson. The Cogdills reside in Buies Creek and are active members of Memorial Baptist Church. In addition to preaching most Sundays this summer, Dr. Cogdill will assist in pastoral care and leadership, and will be available for pastoral counsel as needed or requested. He will also provide some staff development training for our church staff. Mike Cogdill brings a wealth of experience to his role as Sabbatical Pastor. He has served in a similar capacity during pastoral sabbaticals at First Baptist Church, Clinton, and Yates Baptist Church, Durham. We are fortunate to be blessed by his leadership at. On Sunday morning, June 7, Dr. Cogdill will join us for worship and be introduced to the congregation.

2 Student Ministry Snapshots! A Sabbath Journey David Hailey Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy (Ex. 20:8) is one of the most familiar commandments in the Bible. It calls us to cease from our labors for needed rest. Even more, it is an invitation to trust God. The ancient Hebrews understood this perhaps better than we do. They believed that each new day began in the evening. During the dark hours as they slept, they entrusted themselves to their Creator, who was already at work. When they arose in the morning, much of the divine initiative was already achieved, and now God was ready for them to join Him in His creative and redemptive activity. I am grateful to the members of Hayes Barton Baptist Church for their generosity in providing sabbatical leave to their ministry staff. Beginning on June 15 and continuing through August 24, I will be fortunate to be given some extended sabbath rest. One of the concerns raised whenever a pastor goes on sabbatical has to do with the ongoing needs of the congregation. To be sure, the world will not stop. This is where faith enters the equation. We keep the Sabbath truly when we trust that God will continue doing his work even when we cease from doing ours. I will look forward to sharing some of the highlights of this sabbatical journey when I return. In the meantime, when you have the chance, take a look at my sabbatical blog listed under News and Events on our church s website ( I ll share pictures, stories, and reflections from along the way. The Minister with Students Search Committee concluded its initial work in developing a candidate profile and updating s Minister with Students Position Description at the end of April. This enabled the Committee to post HBBC s open Minister with Students position with several divinity schools as well as the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship s Minister Matching program, in early May. Joanne McDaniel We are now five months into our reading of Hayes Barton Baptist Church s 2015 devotional Abundant Living by E. Stanley Jones. And our journey continues. We ve noted in past writings about the book that it isn t the easiest devotional to read. The topics are challenging and seem never ending; are we ever going to get to what abundant living means or do the challenges of daily life make it unattainable? Scott Bowers, Committee Chair, shared an update on the Committee s work at HBBC s May 6 Business Meeting. Since late April, the Committee has received several resumes and recommendations for and from interested candidates and was able to conduct several initial interviews during the month of May. Given where we started, the latter might be true as back in January Jones noted we would be confronting fifteen enemies on our journey. At the start of June, we are about to battle our ninth enemy, divided loyalties. To date, the eight enemies we have worked to conquer are: This will be my second Boats on Loch Peallach in Scotland. Photo by sabbatical at Hayes Matthew Kirkland via flickr.com Barton Baptist Church. On my first, Susan and I lived largely out of our suitcases as we traveled from stem to stern throughout Scotland. This sabbatical will be different. Although we will return to the land of Caledonia, most of our time will be spent in a small cottage near two lakes and a mountain on the lonely island of Mull. Our days will be filled with quiet reflection, study, and much writing. I will be working on the manuscript of a preaching commentary scheduled to be published next year, along with a Lenten devotional guide for our church. In addition, I hope to do some longrange planning, some reading just for fun, and yes, I must confess, I ll be taking my golf clubs. I have complete confidence in our ministerial staff, which will be led by our Associate Pastor, Kristen Muse. In addition, we welcome Dr. Michael Cogdill as our Sabbatical Pastor, who is introduced on page 1. Our Journey Continues... The Committee continues to listen for God s calling and guidance as Committee members go about their work. They look forward with excitement to continuing dialog with candidates during the summer months. Additional members of the Committee who have been hard at work in this process include Jonathan Chapman, Julie Jones, David Long, Alice Moore, John Owen, Madison Pendergraft, Jenny Wells, and Diane Willeford. Dr. Hailey, Kristen Muse, Melissa Pendergraft, and Bruce Thompson serve as exofficio members. (1) a lack of faith in and loyalty to Something beyond one self, a Something that gives ultimate meaning, coherence, and goal to life (2) self centeredness HBBC Youth Update: Spring Has Sprung and Summer is Simmering! Wendy Tingle (3) anger, resentments, hate (4) fear, worry, anxiety (5) a sense of unresolved guilt (6) negativism and inferiority attitudes (7) undisciplined desires (8) insincerity, conscious and unconscious. Well, spring has sprung, and we are rolling into summer quicker than warm Krispy Kremes disappearing on Sunday morning. The Youth Spring Retreat was a huge success. Twenty-six youth, nine chaperones, one dog, and several fishing worms descended upon Brady & Jenny Wells family farm near Hamilton, North Carolina, the beginning of May. The weekend was jam packed pack with a Kemps tournament, fishing, swimming, kayaking, braceletmaking, kick balling, tie-dying, singing, bon firing, flashlight tagging, golfing, kite-flying, cooking, eating, camping, bible-studying, and little sleeping. It was a great time had by all; we can t wait to do it again. Whew! I hesitate to read forward for fear of the enemies that lie ahead. So I ll look back instead. And in looking back, I find that I continue to gain from the journey, from climbing the ladders that Jones places before us. For example, Jones offers positive steps for climbing the ladder out of negativism and inferiority attitudes. His ladder for doing this includes remembering that: Summer will be just as busy as we have a lot of things cooking on the stove! We are hoping to schedule a Lock-Out when school is finished and to kick off the summer so be looking for those details soon. Beginning on June 10th, we will have dinner, bible study, and games each Wednesday night throughout the summer from 6:00-8:00 pm. Each week, we will also have an activity scheduled for a Friday night or Saturday. We will send out a schedule as soon as we have it finalized. We hope everyone will join us when in town. * You do not merely belong to the Kingdom of God; the Kingdom of God belongs to you. * You are not alone, never alone. * Your very handicaps may be points of departure. Such reminders are critically important on our journey. To get to abundant living, we have to remind ourselves daily what is most important so that we can conquer the enemies that are around us, inside and out, in the past, present, and future. And finally, we are excited to welcome Emily Patton as our youth intern. Let either of us know if you need anything. Wendy Tingle (wtingle@hbbc. org) or Emily Patton (epatton@hbbc.org). Our journey continues... Living for God s Calling: A Minister With Students Search Committee Update Scott Bowers 2 3

3 Why Go? Kristen Muse Welcoming New Babies at HBBC: How Do We Love Them? Count the Ways Kathy Teague Everywhere I looked there were people young and old, working to make our school a better place for kids. These are pictures of just a few of the newest members of our church family, and we are thrilled to welcome them to Hayes Barton Baptist Church! Led by our Children s Minister, Gayle Justice, a team of folks work together to make these new little ones and their families feel loved. To continue the good work we have begun in establishing meaningful relationships with the wonderful people. On-going relationships with people. Just a few weeks ago, over a hundred of us gathered to go out into our community to make a difference. The places we went were familiar to some, and the organizations we served were not new to us. We had been there before. Whether we have an ongoing relationship with them or we have been there before with Operation Inasmuch, we didn t go to a new place. We returned and we ll keep on returning. Why? Because building relationships with people and organizations makes a difference. Because continuing to see how God is working to use our congregation s gifts in our community and world reminds us of how He has drawn us together. Because God has called us to make a difference, and we do so by going. I will allow the pictures to tell the story, and I hope that you will ask those in the pictures to share their experiences. There are so many reasons to go, but the most important one is because God commands us to Go and make disciples. As soon as she finds out about a new birth, Gayle sends a letter of congratulations and a sweet pair of socks. A rose is placed on the pulpit, and an announcement is made in church publications. Bob Barksdale posts a Congratulations From HBBC sign in the yard and delivers a gift basket that has been lovingly prepared by Melissa Warren Dougher. Soon after, Kathy Teague, CoDirector of the Nursery Department, makes a home visit, bringing a book for the new baby and a delicious chicken pot pie prepared by our own Val Chavis. In July, twenty-eight members of will return to Helena, Arkansas. Thirteen years ago, a faithful thirteen heard the call to go and the call continues. Why? To continue the good work of establishing relationships. Because there are still children and adults who need to learn to swim, to be loved, and to hear about the hope that we have in God. Families and individuals, youth, children, and adults will serve together. They will work to be the body of Christ, and, as they go, so do you. When the parents are ready to bring the new little one to the Nursery, the wonderful group of teachers, Anne Bland, Meredith Ellison, Leanne McClendon, and Melissa Pendergraft, are ready to make both baby and parents feel loved. Provisions put in place by the Covenant Security Team help make the parents feel secure about leaving their infant, often for the first time. Why go? Because God calls us! Finally, Gayle helps schedule the baby s dedication which provides a time for the entire congregation to voice its delight at our newest family member. God is calling you to go. How Will you answer? To borrow and revise the familiar phrase, How do we love you, let us count the ways.... Our church family feels privileged to play a part in the lives of children, modeling the love of Jesus in so many ways. 4 5

4 Come By and Check Out the CRC! Sharln Chapman I d like to introduce you to the Christian Resource Center (CRC). While you may think that little room with the window (or the cut through to the sanctuary) is a library, it is much more than just a library. It is truly a Christian resource for our members, visitors, and community members. While we are doing introductions, let me introduce myself. My name is Sharln (rhymes with darlin) Chapman. My husband, Jonathan, and I are members of the Genesis class and have been members of since I am a self-professed book nerd. My book nerdiness is so extreme that two of my prized possessions are my New York Public Library Card and my Library of Congress Readers Card. Not that I would ever travel so far to check out a book, but I could if I wanted to! I love to talk all things books, and I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to volunteer in the CRC. So, just what exactly is going on in the CRC? You may have noticed that the CRC recently hosted a contest to design new bookplates. We are thrilled to receive donations to the CRC that are made in honor or memory of loved ones. When such donations are made, we will decide with the donor what book to place in the CRC and then a bookplate will be affixed to the inside of the book noting the generous donation. Our goal is to have a catalog of bookplate designs from which the donor can choose. We have received many beautiful illustrations from the children of our church and preschool. The unveiling of the chosen illustrations will be June 7th. We can t wait to share them with you. We are excited to announce that the CRC is launching our first annual summer reading program for our children and youth. The theme this year is the Ice Cream Social Summer Reading Program. Studies show when young people aren t engaged in educational activities during the summer, they experience learning loss. The more children read, the better their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The program will run from June 1st through August 31st. Keep an eye out for more details! HAVE YOU HEARD? June 1st - August 31st Ice Cream Social Summer Reading Program The CRC has a rich history of being a repository of materials meant to build and strengthen faith. We want you to continually grow in your faith, be encouraged, be inspired, and learn more about the beautiful world God has created for us. I d like to disavow you of the notion that the CRC is full of old and dusty volumes of theology that are boring or that do not apply to current times. The CRC is constantly reviewing new books and materials (both fiction and non-fiction). We strive to be more than a collection of valuable books. The CRC can be a gathering place, a training center, a reflection place, a listening center, a viewing center a place of respite, renewal, and encouragement. The CRC is more than just a shortcut to the sanctuary. Come by and check it out! This fund was established through a gift by the late Hubert F. Ledford, a longtime stalward member of the congregation. To be eligible for funding, a project must conform to our congregation s definition of missions... the deliberate and diligent effort of the congregation, under the leadership of the Holy Spirit, to extend the gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed to as many people as possible locally and throughout the world, both Christian and non-christian. Application forms are available at www. hbbc.org under Forms, or may be obtained from Christine Moore in the church office. Completed forms must be returned by July 31. 5 Using This Summer to Refresh Kristen Muse Turn to God, so that times of refreshing may come from the Lord. Acts 3:19, NIV At the top of our computer screens is a familiar button, Refresh. We use it to update our or web browsing so that we have the latest information at our fingertips. With that information, we are ready to respond and face the challenge ahead. Computer screens aren t the only things that need to be refreshed; our spirits need times of refreshing, too. Remembering the Sabbath is one way we do this. We show up to be replenished, renewed, reinvigorated, and ready to face the challenge ahead. During our Pastor s Sabbatical, it is our prayer that his spirit will be refreshed. As a congregation, we yearn for a similar experience during his time away. We want to take this time to Refresh; to hear a new voice that will continue to restore and strengthen our faith. Then when the end of August comes, we ll hit the Refresh button together and be ready for the challenges that lie ahead. Consider this summer how you will be refreshed: P P Will you take some time away from your daily activities and head off on vacation? P P Will you just slow down a little? P P Will you put in place a new spiritual discipline? P P Might you take time to drive a different way to work or church asking God to show you something new? P P Maybe you will breathe a little more? We all need times to refresh our souls; to refocus on what is important and to reflect on who God wants us to be. Maybe instead of making a to do list our refreshment will be spent in making a to be list. What does God want us to be? Let s refresh our souls together this summer. I look forward to hearing about your efforts to Refresh this summer! Timeless values for a changing world: Faith, Hope, Love Dr. David J. Hailey, Pastor ext. 104, drdhailey@hbbc.org Rev.
