A reception will follow in the Ministry Center. Memorial Services and reception for Mary Buck are set for Saturday, October 24, at 7 PM. (Sanctuary & Ministry Center) Living with Loss Grief Recovery Group Living With Loss is a six-week 1 grief recovery group that provides support for those who are grieving the recent death of a loved one, and who face the changes and challenges that follow such a loss. The group will be facilitated by Rev. Julie Richwine. Julie retired as a chaplain at Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in Whittier and now serves as Parish Associate for Pastoral Care at St. Mark Presbyterian Church. The group will meet in Room 405 from 10:30 AM 12 PM each Thursday, beginning on October 15. Please call Pastor Marion to indicate your interest in attending the group. Name Tags Session would like to know if we should continue with our name tags in worship. We ve noticed there is less of the congregation wearing them. When you sign the friendship pad this morning next to your name please print Name Tag yes to keep or no to stop wearing. WANTED: We do need occasional help in selling the Equal Exchange coffee and other products between services on the first Sunday of the month. If you are interested, or want to know more, see Ann Seufert at the Equal Exchange coffee sales table this Sunday or call her at (714) TODAY AT GRACE FIRST Children s Ministry Sunday School meets in Room 201 at 9 and 11 AM for four years old through high school. Child care is
2 available for infants through preschool in our child care room. LEARN & GROW Mind, Body and Spirit Class starting Monday, October 12, at 6:30 PM in Room 405. Join our Mind, Body and Spirit class as we move our bodies, clear our minds and lift our spirit as we attend to the Spirit. Debbie Fields, a member of Grace First and a certified yoga instructor, will be leading us. Wear clothing for movement and bring mats. (Some additional mats will be available at the door.) Please let Pastor Marion (marion@gracefirst.org) know that you will be attending or of your interest in a class like this. (This class will be only for four consecutive Mondays, beginning October 12.) Horizons Bible Study will meet on Tuesday, October 13, at 7 PM in the Fireside Room. Men, women, new to the faith or old timers, all are welcome. The Bible Made Easy meeting for October 15, has been cancelled. We will continue our study of Genesis on Thursday, November 19, at 10 AM in the Fireside Room. All are welcome. Presbyterian Women s Bible Study will meet on Wednesday, October 21, at 9:30 AM in the Fireside Room. All are welcome. ADULT EDUCATION 10:20 AM RM 405 Who is Jesus? October 11, 18 & 25 Rev. Judy Siker This seems like a simple question but, as anyone who has tried to answer it knows, it is not! In this three-week study we will take a look at how this question in answered in the New Testament (in the Gospels as well as a few other NT books) and also among believers today. Come and explore this basic question of our Christian faith. Judy is an ordained PCUSA clergywoman. She is a visiting Professor at Loyola Marymount University in the theological studies department. She served as Dean of the American Baptist Seminary of the West and as Vice-President of San Francisco Theological Seminary. CHILDREN S MINISTRY The Grace First Children's Choir rehearses Sundays in Room 311 from 10:15-11 AM, We are looking to expand our choir, so if you know anyone who might be interested, please have them contact Rachel St. Marseille for more information: rachelstmarseille@gmail.com Operation Christmas Child Christmas is coming and so is Operation Christmas Child! Start collecting school supplies and small gifts to fill a shoebox for a young child. Shoeboxes and information are available in Carolyn Blocker's office. We begin cooking at 9 AM in the church kitchen. Monetary donations should be marked COA dinners. If you shop locally at Ralph's, be sure to register online for the new term of their Community Contributions Program, which benefits COA every time you shop! CROP Hunger Walk ending hunger one step at a time! The 5K walk takes place on Sunday, October 25, leaving Los Altos United Church of Christ at 2:30 PM. Of the proceeds, 75% go to CROP/Church World Service for international hunger relief and programs while 25% supports five local hunger-fighting organizations, including COA. For further information, to sign up to walk or to sponsor a walker, stop by the table in the Narthex after either service. Walking is good for you and for others!!! MUSIC MINISTRY Aka Taru Taiko will practice on October 12 & 26 in the Narthex at 7 PM. New members are always welcome. "Winterfest is Coming" On December 5 and 6, the vocal department at CSULB will be presenting 'Winterfest." All of the choirs at the University will be performing. The concert is at First Congregational Church at 3rd and Cedar in downtown Long Beach. We have tickets for the 4 PM performance on Saturday, December 5. We would love to have you join us. The discounted tickets are $20. Let Susan or Ed Craig or Stan know that you would like to go and we will add your name to the list. We will be buying the tickets on November 1 so we will need the money by Sunday, October 25. We carpool from the church. (you can leave the driving to us). The vans usually leave about 3:15 PM and should be back to church by 6:30-6:45 PM. This concert is a wonderful way to start the Advent Season. MINISTRY TEAMS Calling All Peacemakers Your Grace First Peace and Justice Ministry invites you to join our dedicated group of Peacemakers. Please come and participate with us in living and ministering the ways of peace and justice in our local community and throughout the world. Our next meeting will be held on Monday, October 26, at 1:30 PM in the Fireside Room. Recycling The Peace & Justice Ministry invites Grace First members to be more intentional about recycling on campus. We ll start with 3
4 recycling all paper and cardboard products, so wherever you see the new blue recycling bins deposit dry trash there. The light colored trash bin by the COA shed is for recycling only. Facilities Grace First welcomes many community groups to its facilities each month. In October, we will be hosting Boy Scouts of America Troop 212 (our sponsored troop) for its usual meetings, plus an Eagle Court and Merit Badge Day. We will also host Pnai Or Jewish Fellowship, Brentwood Presbyterian Church Choir Retreat, LA Bronze Handbell group, LB School of Music Recital, Children s Benefit League Luncheon and Board Meeting, LB Soccer Referees, CA Retired Teachers Board Meeting, Power 4 Youth Board Meeting, Women of Note, PEO Reciprocity and several PEO chapter meetings. FELLOWSHIP GROUPS Grace First Knitters meet in Room 401, but look for us elsewhere on campus if we need to switch rooms. For more information, contact Suzanne Carnal or Stacy Rosales.
