TREASURES from our TRADITION One of our great treasures is the way the Church has frequently flourished under unfavorable conditions, like the grape ivy on the mantel that refuses to die no matter how infrequently you water it or open the drapes. Like the apartheid laws in South Africa in the last century, the penal laws of Ireland were aimed at depriving the majority population of basic human rights. The Protestant parliament of Ireland enacted laws limiting the practice of Catholicism. The goal was to force conversion from "popery" to the Church of Ireland, and additional laws took aim at Jews, non-anglicans, and Quakers. There were laws against intermarriage, laws against Catholics being lawyers (there was a one-hundred-pound fine), a law granting lifelong income to priests who became Protestant, and a ban on weapons. In fact, until 1793, a Catholic man had to recruit and pay a Protestant man to serve in the local militia in his place! As if family life is not complicated enough in any age, the sons of a deceased father could divide his land equally, unless one became Protestant. In that case all would go to him! When allowed, new Catholic churches had to be built of wood, not stone, be off a main road or city square, have no steeple or bell, and be called a "chapel." Catholic "Emancipation" was largely secured by 1829, but even up to the founding of the Irish State in the 1920s, some effects of the laws endured. Un viejo chiste relata que una ancianita por más que se apresuraba a llegar al templo, siempre llegaba tarde al rosario. Un día decidió adelantarse para ver por qué duraba tan poco tiempo el rezo del rosario. A la hora establecida salió un ministro de la sacristía y velozmente recitó Cruz, Bola, bolita, bolita, bolita, Bola.... Esta es una exageración del hecho que muchos rezan el rosario como si fuera una serie de fórmulas que se repiten sin pensar. Esta devoción mariana debe meditarse con tranquilidad y en silencio. El enfoque del rezo del rosario son los misterios de la vida de Jesús. Los Padrenuestros y las Ave Marías nos ayudan a entrar en esa meditación en una forma mas profunda. Esas oraciones deben ayudarnos a penetrar el misterio de un acontecimiento gozoso, luminoso, doloroso, o glorioso de la vida de Jesucristo. Pero, una vez que estamos en presencia del misterio, debemos enfocarnos y contemplar a Dios. Esto no significa que el rosario no deba nunca rezarse en voz alta y en grupo. El rosario también tiene su dimensión comunitaria, pero ésta necesita fundarse en una verdadera meditación. En varias culturas latinoamericanas aún se canta el rosario. 4 Ministry DEACON INFORMATION DAYS The beginning of 2019 reopens the time period of accepting new applications to the Rockford Diocese Permanent Diaconate Formation Program. Men between the ages of 35 and 55 who are interested in becoming a Permanent Deacon in the Diocese of Rockford and who would like to apply must attend one of the three Deacon Information Days scheduled this Fall. For married men, wives must also attend. These days explain both the application process and give an overview of the Permanent Diaconate Formation Program. While there is no commitment required to attend one of these days, only those who attend will be eligible to apply. The dates are October 13, November 17 and December 1. All meetings are held between 10:00AM and 12:30PM at the Diocesan Administration Building (555 Colman Center Drive, Rockford, IL 61125). Although not required, those interested are encouraged to contact the Permanent Diaconate Office ( ) to indicate which meeting they plan on attending or to ask further ques- COURAGE APOSTOLATE IN THE ROCKFORD DIOCESE Do you have same sex attraction or know someone who does? Courage is an international apostolate of the Catholic Church which ministers to persons with same-sex attractions and a chapter is here in the Rockford Diocese. Ryan Browning at rbrowning@rockforddiocese.org. We Need Your Help LECTORS - The Lord God has given me a well-trained tongue, that I might know how to answer the weary a word that will waken them. (Isa 50:4) The role of the Lector is to inspire parishioners to listen to the Word of God. Do you have a love for the Word of God? Would you consider sharing that love with our parish as a Lector? We are looking for Lectors to serve at the 4:00 PM, 7:15 AM and 9:00 AM Masses. Please call the for more information. EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS - Remember that each one of us have gifts that were given us by God. These gifts are unearned, undeserved, yet freely given. Please prayerfully consider your gifts and how you are being called to use them. We are in need of Eucharistic ministers. This ministry is a very special way to become more active in, and to help nourish our Parish Community. We are meant to give to and receive from one another. Please consider volunteering for 3 months at the Mass of your choice. Training is provided and scheduling is made around your availability. We especially need help at 4:00 PM Saturday and 7:15 AM. 5 October is Respect Life Month - LOS ABRAZÓ Y LOS BENDIJO Hoy Jesús recalca que el Reino de Dios pertenece a los que son como los niños. Son confiados, tiernos y tienen el corazón abierto al amor. Se alegran cuando se dan cuenta del amor que Dios siente por ellos y están más que dispuestos a retribuir ese amor. Este es el modelo que Jesús nos presenta si queremos recibir el Reino de Dios. Debemos abrir el corazón y amar. Debemos bajar la guardia, sin importar por qué la hayamos montado, y recibir con alegría el amor que Cristo siente por nosotros. Es imposible que hagamos esto sin ayuda. Sólo la gracia de Dios nos permitirá hacerlo y esa gracia se nos concede generosamente y sin condiciones. Lo único que debemos hacer es aceptarla. They are joyful when they are made aware of God's love for them, and are eager to return that love. This is the model Jesus holds out to us if we want to welcome the reign of God. We need to have open, loving hearts. We must drop our defenses, however we came by them, and welcome Christ's love for us with joy. This is impossible for us on our own. 6 School News - Wendy Kelly A couple of years ago, as a school community, we created the St. Laurence Six which are the ways that we set ourselves apart from other schools in the area. They are: Affordable, High Quality Education; Challenging Curriculum; Christian Morals and Values; Involved, Diverse Community; Opportunities Beyond the Classroom; Rich History and Tradition With a dedicated teachers and families, we continue to move forward toward greatness. In a time when many schools are seeing budget cuts and are eliminating outside experiences for their students, we still strive to enrich our curriculum with offsite learning. This week our 5 th -8 th graders visited the Holocaust Museum in Skokie. When asked what he thought of the field trip, 8 th grader, Sam, stated that it was very sad to hear about what happened during this time. It was a very moving experience for our students. In addition, our PreK-3 rd grades visited Kuiper s Family Farm to enrich their knowledge of the interdependent relationships in ecosystems among plants, animals and their environments. On Friday, our teachers participated in a Deanery Institute Day at St. Patrick s School in which they heard Father Paul speak about articulation among peers as we continue our work in the diocese on grade level collaboration through Professional Learning Networks. Trifecta began this week. First graders, Justin, Charlotte and Penelope, pulled the winning names. Congratulations to Mary Simkus ($100), Ruben Alfaro($75) and Diane Drik ($50). Thank you again to everyone who purchased tickets to support our school! Lastly, our growth mindset mantra for October is My brain is like a muscle that grows! Our students are learning that we are not born with a level of intelligence. Through brain plasticity, we can actually grow our brain through challenges and taking on difficult tasks! 7 "It is such a simple word: Amen. And it seems to be exactly the same in English, German, French, Spanish, Latin, Greek, Aramaic and Hebrew. That s because it came from the Hebrew language and followed the path of Christian Evangelization throughout the world. So what does it mean? It means that we give assent to what has just been said and we claim that it is true. Amen = I believe it. So be it. It is true. Can I get an Amen for that? At really special Masses, such as the canonization of a saint in St. Peter s Square, the choir and the people sing the super-duper triple Amen in four part harmony accompanied with brass, tympani, strings, and voices. It is truly magnificent and glorious and a fitting way to conclude the Eucharistic Prayer in which the extraordinary miracle of the Transubstantiation just took place. Sometimes we can think hearing what God desires from us is like a reward for good behavior; If I am good, then God will tell me what He wants me to do. That is not necessarily the case. In fact, there are MANY instances when God called somebody when they weren t living healthy lives. Take St. Paul for example. He was on his way to imprison and murder Christians when God called him from that way of life to a more perfect way of living. The same can be true for us; maybe not to the extent of St. Paul, but we don t have to be good in order to hear His voice, but rather it will be His voice that leads us to a more healthy and perfect way of living. We simply have to give God the space to communicate His desires for us. Because once we do that, we begin to discover that His desires are, in fact, the deepest desires of our own hearts.
