Esta semana celebramos la Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción de María. Esta es una fiesta especial para varios países latinoamericanos como Nicaragua, Panamá, Paraguay y los Estados Unidos que tienen como patrona nacional a la Madre de Jesús bajo este título. Esta creencia tiene siglos de ser discutida por teólogos cristianos como Ambrosio, Agustín, Buenaventura y Tomás de Aquino, pero fue solo con la Constitución Ineffabilis Deus del Papa Pío IX en 1854 que pasó a ser doctrina oficial de la Iglesia. Paluch Co. Occasionally, someone raises a surprised complaint that while Christmas arrives on Santa s sleigh at the Macy s parade on Thanksgiving Day, the Church doesn t catch on too fast. They may even say that Advent is a new-fangled idea. Not so. To trace its beginnings, we have to go back to the fourth or fifth century in France (then Gaul), when Epiphany was the favored day, next to Easter, for baptism. The old pagan structures of Rome were collapsing then, and many people sought to be baptized. Since adults always prepared for baptism by fasting, folks counted back a few weeks for a kind of retreat. Before too long, bishops were advising everyone to attend church frequently beginning on December 17. Soon, artists were imagining ways of expressing the Advent mystery, and in Italy this gave rise to beautiful mosaics of empty thrones awaiting the arrival of the Lord of all creation. Advent as we know it develops on two separate tracks: the first having to do with our spiritual preparation for celebrating the Christmas feast, and the second having to do with the way this is organized and expressed in the liturgical readings and prayers every day of the season. --James Field, Copyright (c) J. 6 School News - Wendy Kelly The next few weeks will be filled with the anticipation of Christmas which is never more evident than in the eyes of a child! Our students in preschool through 6 th grade took their Christmas show on the road again this year and performed traditional Christmas carols at our Barnes and Noble event on Saturday. At this time of year, it is important to focus on ways that we can give back to others. Before Thanksgiving break, our 7 th and 8 th graders packed the food donations that were collected from the generous efforts of our parish and school family and delivered them to Two Rivers Head Start. We continue to value experiences for our students outside of the classroom. Recently, our 6 th -8 th graders visited the Museum of Science and Industry s Science Behind Pixar exhibit. In addition, our preschool through 3 rd graders went to see Shrek the Musical at the Marriott Theatre. It is through these offsite experiences that our students learning is expanded. As we enter a new month, we embrace a new Growth Mindset mantra. This month it is We Love a Challenge! T.S. Eliot once said, If you aren t in over your head, how do you know how tall you are? This month we focus on embracing challenges as a means toward growth! Our Backpack Blessing Fruit of the Spirit ties right into this as we reflect on patience this month. Thank you to everyone who supported our PTC Bake Sale recently and mark your calendars for our December Bingo event on December 8 th. The theme this month is Ugly Christmas Sweater! Please join us for a fun-filled family event! I hope everyone in our parish family has a blessed week ahead! 7 And now what do we do? Having received Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist, we go out into the world to bring Christ to all we meet, through our words and deeds. At the end of World War II, the Catholic faithful in a small town in Germany set to work to rebuild their parish Church, which had been demolished in the war. Little by little, brick by brick, with great love and faith, they rebuilt their beloved Church. But when it came to restoring the marble statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the hands of the Lord on the statue of Jesus never looked quite right. So the restoration committee decided to leave the statue without hands, but placed a bronze plaque next to it stating: Jesus has no hands, except our hands. Go in peace. Well, this weekend is, in fact, a new year because we just began Advent, the beginning of a brand new year in our Church! Just as our calendar year begins on January 1st, our liturgical Church year begins on the first Sunday of Advent. As you begin this Advent season, I encourage you to ask God to allow you to dive deeply into praying over what God desires in and for your life. Every one of us has a vocation -- a calling that is unique to each individual. This vocation is not only a plan for your entire life, but also a plan for each day and God wants to reveal to you not only the mission of your life but also the mission of this very moment.
