First Holy Communion: Sunday, April 23, 2017, at 1 p.m. From the Principal s Desk As we embark on the Lenten season, it is yet another?me that it is evident in the halls of St. Laurence that we are uniquely Catholic not just another school. We are consistently challenged through standards implemented by governing bodies like the Na onal Catholic Educa on Associa on to work toward increasing Catholic Iden?ty in our schools. We do that in so many ways, but experiencing the sacraments together as a school family is one of my favorites. Schools that are not directly a part of a parish community do not have that luxury in the same way that we do. For that, I am grateful. Please join us for our Mardi Gras Bingo event this weekend hosted by our terrific 8th grade parents. It proves to be yet another fun-filled evening for the en?re family. This month I won t be taped to the wall or get a pie in my face, but students can win a lunch provided by me with a special (well, I think he s pre9y special guest). Our students not only find success in the classroom and in our afer school ac?vi?es, but also in those that they par?cipate in on their own and afer they leave our school. Congratulations to the Lady Green Wave basketball team on a 3rd place finish at State! We are especially proud of the alum on the team and coaching staff! Andrew REGULATIONS FOR FAST AND ABSTINENCE Ash Wednesday, March 1, 2017 and Good Friday, April 14, 2017 are days of Fast and Abs2nence. Fridays of Lent are days of abs2nence. Fas?ng: is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to Maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Ea?ng between meals is not permiced, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. Absnence: is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abs?nence no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. When In doubt concerning fast and abs?nence, the parish priest should be consulted. (CCL ) Excep2ons: Women who are pregnant and persons who are sick are not bound by the law. Fas2ng, almsgiving, and prayer are the three tradi2onal disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these prac?ces seriously in a spirit of penance and of prepara?on for Bap2sm or of renewal of Bap2sm at Easter. Keith Romke, Director of Vocaons Each year we approach these 40 days with excitement and maybe a licle nervousness or apprehension if we re being honest. Of course the goal of Lent is to go deeper in our rela?onship with Christ by working on our faults and trying to build up good habits. Another way to put it would be to say that we strive to put our own will and our own desires aside and to strive to fulfill God s will more perfectly as we progress through this season. If this is the case, that this season is about doing God s will, then this seems like a perfect opportunity for discernment of God s call! You see, every week I write in the column about ways in which we can both discover and answer God s call for each of us, whether it be in the day to day details of life or one s big picture voca?on! Lent is a perfect and super-charged opportunity to make a concerted effort each day to discovering God s will! I recommend adding one more thing to the list of things that you re doing for Lent and I ll tell you right away that it s nothing to be worried about because it won t take much?me. Simply add this prayer into your daily rou?ne each day during Lent: God, please give me the grace to keep an open heart and to desire you re will over my own, and give me the strength to say YES to your call when you reveal it to me.
