3 Thank You! A BIG THANK YOU to all who helped our Elgin Deanery Council of Catholic Women Cookie Sale. Many people baked cookies for this event and many more people bought those cookies. Our $358 profit will be used to buy the RCIA Candidates of our Deanery gifts and will also fund our Sisters' Appreciation Dinner. Thank you! Thank you! 4 Religious Education Next Wednesday, December 6 th, is our PREP Family Advent Party! It's Christmas Sweater night as we celebrate the start of Advent! Wear your favorite Christmas Sweater, do a family Nativity activity, and watch all the students compete in a heated game of Advent Jeopardy! School News The past few weeks have been filled with excitement as our Preserving the Legacy committees have begun to come together to work toward the common goal of continuing, and building on, the positive momentum toward greatness. It s been a truly awesome thing to watch and I cannot thank everyone enough for your efforts thus far! If you are interested in joining this effort, it is never too late. In addition, our technology focus continues to show up in learning activities as our teachers work toward utilizing and incorporating the Ipads into the classrooms in meaningful ways. One of the ways we are doing this includes the creation of an environmental survey by our 7 th graders that was then administered to students in other grade levels. The data that was collected was then turned into graphs and charts to aid in the analysis of the results. Our preschool through 4 th graders went on a field trip recently to the Shedd Aquarium where they used Ipads to identify the elements of different habitats and then they had to go through the steps to create a habitat for a mystery animal. The 5 th through 8 th graders have recently completed Genius projects that are an example of student-driven learning on a topic that they are passionate about. The end product was a presentation to the class. These are just a few ways we are working toward our goal of improved STEM learning. This week we highlight: The Sheridan at Tyler Creek N. McLean Blvd. Vocations - Fr. Manny Gomez, Asst. Dir. of Vocations Vocation Corner: If we hear his voice and let ourselves be transformed by him "The LORD is with you, O champion!" This was the greeting of the messenger of God to Gideon. However, Gideon, a brave man, a warrior, and above all very honest man, replies: Excuse me? What did you say? if the LORD is with me, why has all this happened to us? Where are his wondrous deeds of which our fathers told us when they said, 'Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?' For now, the LORD has abandoned us and has delivered us into the power of Midian." This conversation between Gideon and God s messenger reflects the feelings of many, especially in moments of despair, sometimes we wish to shout: Where are you God when a loved one dies; when the innocent suffers; when injustices are committed? Where are you God when we feel lonely, sick or afflicted? Perhaps like Gideon we have been tempted to say: if God were with us we would not be suffering. The dialogue between Gideon and God s messenger doesn t end there. The messenger replies, "Use the strength you have to go to save Israel from the power of the Midianites. I am the one who sends you." Gideon is called to deliver his people from the Midianites. And so, the call to us continues the same in our moments of distress: "Use the strength you have", not to save Israel from the Midianites, but to get out of the circumstance of pain and suffering where you are. God is empowering you and sending you to rescue your person. I know you may be thinking of some excuse, just like Gideon did. Just like every vocation finds some excuses. Gideon replied, "Forgive me, my Lord, but how can I save Israel? My family is the poorest of the tribe of Manasseh, and I am the smallest of my father's house." The Lord answered him, "I will be with you and you will defeat all the Midianites as if they were one man." Just like him we always find an excuse to avoid God s call: "But how can I change the world? Let the powerful and the politicians change it, I cannot. I cannot do anything I do not have the means..." and a thousand more excuses. The answer remains the same: God is with us, and we can defeat evil, and transform the world for good, if we hear his voice and let ourselves be transformed by him.
