Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 Dear Friends, The Hualapai (pronounced WALL-uh-pie ), the "People of the Tall Pines," have lived in the Southwest for untold generations. Traditionally their homelands stretched from Grand Canyon to the Bill Williams River in west-central Arizona and from the Black Mountains bordering the Colorado River to the San Francisco Peaks. The Hualapai Reservation of just less than 1,000,000 acres ( ha) was established in Today the tribe counts about 2,300 members. Peach Springs on Highway 66 is the tribal headquarters. The tribe operates a hotel, restaurant, and gift shop in Peach Springs. While limited ranching, timber harvest, and guided hunts provide some income, the tourist industry offers the best opportunity for employment of tribal members. In September, I had the privilege of visiting the Hualapai nation and the opportunity to enjoy the sweeping vistas of the East Canyon of the Grand Canyon complex. One human-made feature of the East Canyon is the Skywalk. Completed in March of 2007, The Grand Canyon Skywalk is a horseshoe-shaped cantilever bridge with a glass walkway in Arizona near the Colorado River on the edge of a side canyon in the Grand Canyon West area of the main canyon. East Canyon

USGS topographic maps show the elevation at the Skywalk's location as 4,770 ft (1,450 m) and the elevation of the Colorado River in the base of the canyon as 1,160 ft (350 m), and they show that the height of the precisely vertical drop directly under the skywalk is between 500 ft (150 m) and 800 ft (240 m). The horseshoe shaped steel frame with glass floor and sides that form the Skywalk projects about 70 feet (21 m) from the canyon rim. Preparing to walk out onto the Skywalk necessitates placing all your loose items (purses, backpacks, cameras, cellphones and car keys) into free lockers the tribe does not want tourists to lose or throw items from the bridge into the canyon below. Additionally, the wind can pick up, and items can go flying. After stowing my pack, I put on the required blue paper booties over my shoes (which helps prevent scratches on the glass surface of the bridge). The first thing I noticed as I stepped out onto the Skywalk was the beauty of the canyon walls. The next thing I noticed was the interior sound of a silent-screaming terror in my brain when I looked down to the vast beyond beneath me and saw the yawning canyon 800 feet below where my feet were standing on the glass walkway. Even as my frontal cortex tried to assure my hind brain that I was safe, the hardwired self-preservation part of my ancient reptilian brain stem that has kept the human species alive for millennia was loudly proclaiming, We re all going to die! Run away! Run away! I found it very challenging to overcome my animal instincts for survival within a perceived environment of threat. I kept up a running conversation with myself, mostly internally. However, I could occasionally be heard mumbling to myself, Get it together and walk down the center keep looking down! You re fine! You re fine! Sometimes, it takes real will to overcome the fears one may have when participating in a new venture. Change of view can look pretty life threatening at times, so you have to keep telling yourself, I m alive! Look how we re NOT dying right now! Skywalk

Like any new plan, the conception and execution of the Skywalk had its proponents and opponents. There were many environmental concerns as well as many real tribal needs to address. Opponents within the Hualapai tribe view the project as disturbing sacred ground. Supporters within the tribe counter that it is an opportunity to generate much-needed cash to combat serious problems that plague the small 2,000-resident reservation, including a 50% unemployment rate, widespread alcoholism, poverty and suicide. Some tribal members are happy with the Skywalk but express concerns over future development in the area as a result of the presence of the Skywalk. They are also concerned about the potential lack of sustainability because the water used in the development is not taken from the Colorado River but trucked in from elsewhere. People outside of the tribe, including Arizona environmental groups and former National Park officials, have expressed concern about the project's obtrusiveness in the natural environment, considering it a defacement of a national treasure. Former Grand Canyon National Park Superintendent Robert Arnberger has described the development as "the equivalent of an upscale carnival ride," adding that he has been unable to resolve "the apparent conflict between the tribe's oft-stated claim that there is no better caregiver and steward of the Grand Canyon than the tribe, and their approach to the land -- which is based on heavy use and economics." The Road to Hualapai

Eagle Point The tribal leaders reply to National Park s concerns is that the 4.5 million people a year who visit the National Park portion are already overburdening an area and, further, that the tribe needs financial income for survival. Ultimately, the skywalk attracts a reported 370,000 visitors per year, and their admission fees to the Skywalk as well as the site s cafés and gift shop provide much needed income to the tribe. Preservation; this word is fraught with tensions between what Thomas Aquinas referred to as moral goods or ethical goals that can be incompatible. In the case of the Hualapai and the east canyon, the moral goods include preserving the environment v. preserving a people. Ideal sustainability is able to weave multiple goals and needs together in such a way that preservation assures life for all, for generations to come. By recognizing that life in all its forms is sacred, different communities may yet build bridges to gain new perspectives that while scary at first give us new ways of viewing our shared world. In Christ s Peace, Pastor Rachel+ The Rev. Rachel Taber-Hamilton, Rector

I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. (John 15:5, 7, 9, 12-14) Many extracts below are from the Book Holy Currencies - 6 Blessings for Sustainable Missional Ministries by Eric H. F. Law. Two thousand years ago, Jesus initiated a network of followers who were charged to be his witnesses, first locally (in Jerusalem), and then to nearby towns and communities (Samaria), and to the ends of the earth. It was a daunting task, but in view of what we now know about network theory, the charge was definitely doable, and even realistic. Most of us have heard of six degrees of separation, which refers to the idea that everyone is on average approximately six relationships away from any other person on earth. This means I can make a chain of a-friend-of-a-friend statements that connect me with any other person in this world in six steps or fewer. This theory was originally set out by Frigyes Karinthy and popularized in a play written by John Guare. Not so well known is the theory of three degrees of influence by Nicholas A. Christakis and James H. Fowler. According to this theory, Everything we do or say tends to ripple through our network, having an impact on our friends (one degree), our friends friends (two degrees), and even our friends friends friends (three degrees). This means if I am happy, my friends are more likely to be happy, and my friends friends are more likely to be happy and so forth. Sadly the opposite is also true social network effects are not always positive. Depression and violence can also spread. Social networks tend to magnify whatever they are seeded with.

Through their research on social networks, Christakis and Fowler describe the rules of Life in the Network as follows: We shape our network. Our networks shapes us. Our friends affect us. Our friends friends friends affect us. The network has a life of its own. While we know that our social networks shape us, we also know that we can shape our network by influencing our friends, who in turn can influence their friends, and so on. We have a choice in choosing who is in our network or which network we are part of. We also have a choice to decide what to spread throughout network. Do we use it to spread lies or tell the truth, instill fear or foster trust, control or empower, break down or build sustainable communities, propagate hate or share love? Our interconnection is not only a natural and necessary part of our lives but also a force for good. So going back to the network that Jesus initiated. Even though we are scores of generations away from the first Christians who connected directly with Jesus, faithful Christians must find ways to stay close to the source of our network Jesus. Our first degree of connection is with Jesus who confronted the oppressive system of his time by having relationships with the poor, the outcasts, the displaced, the unclean, and the powerless, making those who were on the fringe of the social network the center of his ministry. Jesus called his followers friends, and invited them to abide in his love so that they might bear fruit. Jesus said repeatedly that he was connected with God, who loved him, and in turn he loved them. In other words, we are only two degrees of separation from God through Jesus. Jesus taught us, in the Lord s Prayer to call God Father. If we are all children of God, we are all then siblings to each other. Like brothers and sisters in a family, some of us are really close; some of us might not get along well; some might really dislike each other. And yet we are family we cannot do away with each other. Jesus wants us to be no more than two degrees of separation from God; Jesus want us to connect with each other like brothers and sisters within a divine-human network of grace and truth. This might help us better understand some of the radical things that Jesus said, such as, Love your enemy and pray for those who persecute you. Realizing and living this divinehuman network changes every relationship. It forces us to see each other on the same level: face-toface.

Just use your imagination on what our communities, country and world would be like if we treated each other as siblings. Imagine that a homeless person and a millionaire are brothers; how would they relate to each other when they see each other? Imagine that the marketing director of a drug manufacturer and a patient are brothers; how would a new drug be advertised? Imagine that Democrats and Republicans are brothers and sisters; how would they behave in congress? This foundational belief that we are connected to God through Jesus, making all of us closely related and interconnected like brothers and sisters is the reason why we need to pay attention to and develop our relationships as a currency of exchange. The Christian community is called to be a network that connects people from very diverse backgrounds and experiences woman and man, young and old, rich and poor, powerful and powerless, gay and straight, job providers and jobless, political left and political right, those who have a home and those who have none, the filled and the hungry, etc. When our churches, through our membership, make real faithful connections across the diverse people of God, we are building up the divine-human network, making everyone in the network eventually two degrees from God through Jesus. These internal and external networks of relationships are foundational structures, the frame in which sustainable missional ministries are built. A couple weeks ago during our Welcome Back Sunday service we distributed a Pledge card for the Currency of Relationship, these cards are also available in the Narthex for you to pick up and fill out between now and Sunday October 14th. Once completed you can turn them in during Service in the collection plate, or bring them to the office during the week. As members of our community, both within Trinity Episcopal Church and beyond, the holy currency of Relationship plays a key role in our lives and in the cycle of blessings we experience. God's grace is often made known to us through our relationships, whether within our family, through our friendships, and even through acquaintances we interact with throughout our lives. During this period, we invite you to reflect on the blessings God has provided through the many people we come into contact within our daily lives, and ask you to commit to increasing your currency of both internal and external relationship.

Take a moment to look around the church. Who would you like to get to know better this year? Using the pledge card, fill in the number of existing relationships you would like to strengthen within the church, as well how many new relationships you would like to form. This could be as simple as committing to speak to new people during the coffee hour, or sitting next to someone during the service that you don't know very well. Now think about the people you interact with outside of church - at work, in your neighborhood, and in your friendship circle. With whom would you like to build a stronger relationship? Remember that we are not talking about evangelism, in which you would witness to this person or try to convince them to come to church. We are simply inviting you to be a friend; to listen to their stories and allow them to get to know your story. Then think about your social networks. Are there two people you know that you could introduce to one another for the benefit of a ministry? Finally, find someone to be your accountable person, or "Pledge Partner." This is someone with whom you can check in with and discuss the progress of your pledge commitment and share your experiences. Even though Jesus initial network was composed mostly of Jews, he also commanded his friends to be his witnesses to the ends of the earth. Building and strengthening the internal and external networks is an essential first step for every church if we are auto fulfill Jesus command to love our neighbors as ourselves and to spread this love with people in our immediate neighborhood, in the town and city, in our nation, and across the earth. Blessings, Gonzalo

Happy Fall Trinity Episcopal! Fall is upon us! The days are getting shorter, the winds are cooling and the color shades are turning in the trees. Halloween candies and Thanksgiving dinners are right around the corner! The B&G ministry is always looking for some fresh helping hands! Trinity is a spiritual home to many, and like most homes, there is a lot of "housework" to be done. The Buildings & Grounds ministry has generous folks that are dedicated to keeping our parish a beautiful temple for the community it serves. We meet at the church on the second Saturday from 9am-12pmish, there is a small continental breakfast provided. Are you able to donate 3 hours on a Saturday morning? If yes, then we will see you Saturday, October 13th, 2018! Thank you! Yours in Service to Christ, -Chris Christopher D. Kennedy, Junior Warden

Blessings as we enter into my favorite time of year. My apologies if I ramble a bit here, but I want to share some personal thoughts with you and ask you to take a walk with me. Many of you know that I recently started a personal journey to a more healthy me. While I will be out of pocket for a few weeks, I will keep all of you and Trinity in my prayers. Facing this decision has been a spiritual journey of reflection for me. I came to realize that I had to get healthy to live the life that I wanted to live to live the life that God wanted me to live. To live a life that has so much more to offer. Much prayer and discernment went into my final decision, but in the end I decided that, for all that will be giving up, it is much more about making the choice to live into the life that God truly wants for me. So, I CHOOSE life because God has called me to do more. I CHOOSE life because God has told me that Kelly and I are nowhere close to done. I CHOOSE life because I want to be here to watch my grandkids grow old and get married. I CHOOSE life because I am blessed to have each of you. I wonder if you have had the personal opportunity to really reflect on you and what you mean to this earth, to the people who love you, to Trinity? Maybe it was because you have an amazing prayer life, or maybe like me, it was because you were jolted into it because of a sentinel event and decision to be made, or maybe it is still to come in the future. What I can say is that this has been a truly eye opening time for me and an exploration of self that I would not give up for anything. It was not easy at times, it was rewarding at times, and it was certainly transformational. It seems to me, that for the first time since I was young child and praying, that I really heard God speaking to meguiding me- pushing me along a better path. I hope that every one of you has had or will have the opportunity to do this at some point in your journey. One of the things that became even clearer to me during this time, is that all that Kelly and I have, has been given to us by God. He has entrusted us with his bounty and it is our obligation, our duty and our privilege to give back to God, the Church and to Trinity. I know that once I am back- we will be doing more to support the Church than we are today. You have heard me talk about the Bishop Society- a group of people in our Diocese who have made any legacy gift to the Trinity or the Church. While Kelly and I have been a member of this, upon reflection, we can do more, so we have redone our wills and tripled the amount of funds planned to come to Trinity in the future. We were somewhat behind on our pledge, and we have brought it up to date and will be giving even more beyond our pledged amount throughout the rest of the year and into next year as we start to think about our 2019 pledge. Just a few examples of being pushed or maybe pulled by God to do more, to give back more, to really listen to what we are being called to do.

I hope you join me and CHOOSE life to do more. CHOOSE life to live into your calling. CHOOSE life to walk the spiritual journey of stewardship that God has called you specifically too. So my prayers for all of us this month will be: O Lord, Giver of Life and Source of Freedom We know that all we have is received from your hand Gracious and loving God You call us to be stewards of your Abundance, the caretakers of all you have entrusted to us Help us always to use your gifts wisely And teach us to share them generously Send the Holy Spirit to work through us Bringing your message to those we serve May our faithful stewardship beat Witness to the love of Jesus Christ in our lives We pray with grateful hearts in Jesus name. Amen. In His Service, David Kosar, Treasurer

Sunday November 4, 4:00 pm (THE BOOK OF) JOB - Organ recital with David di Fiore David di Fiore, Professor of Music at Catholic University in Ruzomberok, Slovak Republic, will return to Trinity to perform the Pacific NW premier of the complete cycle "Job" by the Czech composer Petr Eben ( ) for organ with narrative. Petr Eben is a major organ composer, often referred to as the Czech Messiaen (major French impressionism composer) whose life was influenced by internment in a Nazi concentration camp, and his behind the scenes rallying to free his people from Communism and revive Christianity. Job is a very difficult work, requiring a virtuoso level of performance. It is a very intense piece of music, with intense, striking, sometime jarring harmonies and textures. (Most definitely NOT easy listening From the composer: The story of Job demonstrates not only the insignificance of personal sorrow in relation to world events, but it reveals the essential nature of God, who stands by the side of the sufferer; who does not ask Job to approve his sufferings, but just to accept them, who suffers with Job and carries the pain with him, and helps him to overcome it. I have divided this material, so rich in contrasts, into eight movements, each inspired by a passage from the Book of Job. To find out more about the composer and this work: petr-ebens-job/ BELL CHOIR Rehearsals are usually Thursdays, 6:00-7:15pm. (Others by arrangement.) Come find out just how easy and fun this can be. 17 Hello from the Sunday School Committee! Sunday School is off to a great start! Nick Fuchs graciously offered to facilitate a workshop with the children to create their own name tags to wear at church. Thanks to Nick they are enjoying expressing who they are with stickers, fun letters and lots of glitter and more. This will be an ongoing project available to all our Sunday School children and visitors. Anyone, young or old and in between are welcome to come downstairs and create a name tag that is individual to you! We are leaving the workshop set up in room #4. Our Sunday morning in Sunday School include a Godly Play story, time to work with stories, prayer and feast. We will be having Guest teachers as well as monthly stories about the Saints. The Saint stories will usually be geared for our youth approximate ages 10 to 15. Volunteers are needed to be our 2nd adult for Sunday School. If we have enough adults we can offer separate classes for children ages 4 to 9 and 10 to 15. All we need is YOU. No teaching or prep required! Volunteering as our 2nd adult does not need to be a big commitment. We would love to have you with us as little as a few times a year. Safeguarding God s Children training at Trinity! 18 Our shawl ministry has made and blessed 188 prayer shawls and sent 74 prayer shawls to hospice and made and blessed 122 pocket shawls. Our next meeting is Saturday, October 6th at 10 AM-11 AM in the guild room. Hope to see everyone there. If you knit, please join us in this rewarding ministry. All are welcome. On another note we have exciting news from Deb Estep who was an active member of our group until she moved with her husband to Reardon, Washington near Spokane. Read her letter that follows: "I wanted to give you an update on the establishing of a group over here. The Bishop has seen my pocket shawls and wants to establish a group of that will knit at the diocesan convention this year. At the main service yesterday at the Cathedral the new dean blessed 28 pocket shawls for 2 fire districts in Lincoln County where we live. To date, I've completed 7 out of 10 fire districts and all the sheriff employees in the county. I had a table at our ministry fair after the service and showed 3 full length shawls and examples of law, fire and military pocket shawls. I also adapted the brochure, inserts and envelopes to the Cathedral. I printed several brochures and gave every one of them. Got one donation name for yarn and SIX names who want to knit!!! Also, one of the ladies' son is a Border Patrol agent is going to see if they want some. I also called the Chaplain at Fairchild AFB to start a conversation there. Will try to establish a monthly meeting when I contact the ladies to find an available day. You all have been a WONDERFUL support and help!! Thank you so much!! Will keep you apprised! Deb"

Supporting the Everett Gospel Mission The Everett Gospel Mission has been caring for people experiencing homelessness for 55 years. On any given night, up to 40 children will fall asleep in their shelter, feeling safe and warm. It takes a lot of time, money and supplies to care for so many families. Right now, diapers, wipes and other baby supplies are in great demand. The women s shelter especially needs diapers in sizes 3, 4, 5 and 6, plus pull-ups. If you d like to help supply this need, please bring these items to the Trinity narthex and deposit them in the box marked Everett Gospel Mission Diaper Drive located in Trinity s entry hall (the narthex). By donating something as seemingly basic as diapers, you will be directly benefitting homeless children and families in our area! If you have any questions, please call Mary Heileson at , or ask Ron Chappell or Melody Oxley.

Items are needed for the Food Pantry that Kelly maintains in the Church Office. When bringing items in please keep the following things in mind: please do not donate food that is expired all outdated and expired foods will be thrown out this is not the time to clean out your pantry Any opened food items will be thrown out
