For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. Jerimiah 29:11 Dear Friends, This year, the month of March holds within it the beginning of the transformational time of the liturgical season of Lent. Ash Wednesday is March 6 th. On that morning (from 9:30 am to 11:30 am), Trinity will once again participate in the diocesan Ashes-to-Go outreach program, when members of our liturgical team and me will stand on the NE corner of Colby and Hewitt in downtown Everett to administer ashes to all who wish to receive them. There will also be two Ash Wednesday services at Trinity, at 12:00 PM (Noon) and again at 8:00 PM. Contrary to the depressing connotations usually associated with an awareness of sin, Lent actually calls us on a journey of deep joy. Ashes are placed on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday in a custom dating back to the Middle Ages. This is done for two reasons: 1) as a personal act of remembrance of the brevity of our mortal life and 2) as a sign or witness of our commitment to transforming harmful ways of being into healing ways of being. The ashes come from the burnt Palms from the palm crosses made by our youth that were distributed at last year's Palm Sunday celebration. Palm Sunday begins Holy Week, leading us through the Holy Triduum to the Great Vigil of Easter and Easter Sunday. So, these ashes bring us back to our last celebration of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus for us. As a time of honest reflection, Lent calls us to make the journey out of the darkness and into the light. On the first day of Lent Ash Wednesday - we begin a journey of renewal from death to life. However, firstly, we need to value the teaching of mortality. In Christ, God shares in the fully human experience of vulnerability, fear, pain, death, grief and loss. These realities are a part of every life as shared and common aspects of the nature of mortal existence. The work of Lent is to examine whatever is keeping us from our best life as well as what inhibits the world from deeply valuing the dignity and respect of others and Creation. Lent demands that we engage whatever will proactively change us, our community, and our world so that we and all with whom we live in God s Creation can know the blessings of life. As the Swiss philosopher Henri-Frederick Amiel once reflected, Life is short and we never have enough time for the hearts of those who travel the way with us. O, be swift to love! Make haste to be kind.

The ashes of Ash Wednesday are scattered along the road to Jerusalem in their first form as the once living palms fronds that were waved in exultation as Jesus entered the city. The path to that place ultimately leads us to Good Friday. However, the faithful believe that the journey does not end there. Just as the disciples travelled with Jesus as a community on the move, so do we as community of faith travel through our lives supporting one another in our joys and in our sorrows. Sometimes, all we can do is kneel at the foot of the cross of another s suffering as loyal companions who will not abandon each other to what we are helpless to prevent. Other times, we must use our voices with courage in the midst of the market place and temple to name the truth of terrible crimes of empire. God s world is the one we are to nurture, make room for, and disrupt the status quo to see. For, in Lent, we are reminded that the Kingdom of God has come near. God has walked upon the Earth, died within its dark places, and risen transformed as the greatest escape of all in the liberated Spirit who now dwells within us looking out at the world today through the myriad eyes of the faithful. What do we see that we must be a part of changing? What do we hear that we must call others to listen or respond? What do we know to be true that must be spoken above the noise and anxiety of the world? The birth of Christ wasn t once upon a time but an eternal action occurring through every generation. We memorialize that reality with Christmas, but we are to make Christ s presence known and experienced through our thoughts, words, and deeds. To journey as the resurrected Christ is to die to whatever would ever keep us in the tomb. The light of the Day Star beckons, and we must go. Let go of fear. Let go of doubt. Let go of grief. Let go of shame. Let us believe and follow where Christ has led the way. In Christ s Service and Yours, Pastor Rachel+ The Rev. Rachel Taber-Hamilton, Rector

My dear friends, I write this senior warden column with a bittersweet feeling. After a year of serving as senior warden it is time for me to say Good Bye both to this position and to my 3-year rotation in our Vestry. Serving in the vestry and as your senior warden has been a blessing for me and I feel grateful for the opportunity I was given to serve you and our congregation. A new vestry starts for 2019 and with that also a new Senior Warden will be selected. I know the group of volunteers we have for the 2019 vestry is excellent and I expect great things as we continue to embrace and develop the Holy currencies and Cycle of Blessings that we started in 2018; the new vestry will also be looking to finalize plans for the Rogers Hall remodel and installation of an elevator, which will require the support of the entire congregation through a capital campaign. Our future is very bright and I look forward to what it will bring. While I will no longer be serving in the Vestry, I plan to continue being involved with the Stewardship and Sustainability team in in part due to the strong believe and faith I have in the Holy Currencies and transforming our congregation into a model of Stewardship 365, meaning year-around Stewardship. Before I say Good Bye, I would like to share a summary of many things we accomplished in 2018, and I feel the best way to summarize the year is to share with you the same summary that I provided for the annual meeting, as it is a very detailed description of what we accomplished together. I know many of our parishioners might have not been able to attend the Annual meeting, so I wanted this summary to reach everyone. ****From the Senior Warden Annual Report**** 2018 had many blessings and challenges that we all took upon together. One of the great blessings we started together was looking at stewardship with a different model as we introduced the Holy Currencies of Time & Place, Gracious Leadership, Relationships, Truth, Wellness, and Money. This model has allowed us to turn everything we do in our congregation into a Holy Currency, which ultimately leads to each one of us being able to achieve a state of spiritual wellness within our community and with God. Everything you will see in this annual report can be tied back to one of the Holy Currencies.

The Holy currencies of Relationships, Gracious Leadership and Money brought us a couple of wonderful fundraising events led by our vestry member Carol Bartley, these events included: The Dinner & Auction Gala on May 19 th where the theme of Latin Nights featuring the Tijuana Blast Band resonated with all of us for a fun and enjoyable evening. What s best is that all proceeds from the night, which totaled just over $11,000, went towards helping us re-pay the Endowments fund loan, which was taken to help us balance our 2018 budget. The St. Nicks Crafts Fair, on December 1 st featured more items for sale than previous years and brought in over $3,500, which was given towards Outreach, the Holiday Baskets, and the Endowments. The Holy currency of Time & Place is one the Vestry focused on to execute some every important building and grounds projects in 2018: Project Flat roof over the Narthex and Church offices Description The roof over the Narthex and church offices had never been replaced since that area was first built, and during the 2018 rainy season we had many leaking events. American Eagle Roofing was selected by the Vestry to do a full roof replacement; this is the same company who had previously done a new roof over Rogers Hall. Driftmeir Architects, who consulted with Trinity to assess the East Wall repairs, was selected to develop a set of schematic drawings with a remodeling plan to modernize the facilities. These plans also cover the necessary infrastructure to install an elevator between the upper and lower levels of our facilities. Rogers Hall and Common Area Remodel Estimation Driftmeir has developed the initial drafts of those plans and the Vestry has been in constant communication with the architects over the past several months to be able to have a set of options that can now be presented through this Annual meeting to the entire congregation. There will be a focus group working with the congregation to take these options and make a decision on the final set of plans. Note: This phase of the project is intended to just develop the schematics/ plans. The actual cost to do the full remodel of the facilities will need to be taken by the entire congregation through a dedicated capital campaign, whose launch we are expecting will be one of the key goals for the congregation in 2019 and following years. The Holy Currency of Truth was also part of making the financial decision to execute those building & grounds projects, as the vestry wanted to ensure full transparency with the congregation regarding where the funds for those projects was coming from: Expense Cost Covered by Flat roof over the Narthex and Church offices $17,000 Trinity s 125 th Anniversary Dedicated Fund Columbarium Endowment Fund Rogers Hall and Common Area Remodel Estimation $33, Legacy Gift from the estate of Gerald E. Kravic

The Holy Currency of Wellness was very strong in 2018 as we celebrated one of the most wonderful Holy Weeks and the Resurrection of our Lord on Easter Sunday. The entire week included a powerful celebration of liturgy, music, and environment that was made possible thanks to the contributions of so many volunteers and ministries of our church including the Altar Guild, Verger, Acolytes, Choir, Bell Choir, Children s Choir, Office Staff, late night volunteers, and of course Pastor Rachel. Our congregation has also lived the Holy Currency of Wellness through our wonderful music program not only during Sunday services, but also with many special events such as the Christmas Concert, the Silent Movie Night, the concert of our friend and Maestro David DiFiore, concerts of the Pacifica Chamber Orchestra and many more. As part of our Holy Currency of Relationships, we asked our congregation to make a pledge for strengthening and building new Relationships both inside and outside of Trinity. The pledges every one made are evidence of the Love that our congregation brings to our church family and communities as we saw a commitment to strengthen 90 internal relationships within Trinity and a commitment to building 68 new relationships both inside and outside of Trinity. During the summer months, when Pastor Rachel took a 3-month sabbatical, the Holy Currency of Relationships allowed us to welcome Pastor Betsy Seeger, who is remembered with fondness and gratitude for the time she spent with us. Also as part of our Holy currencies of Relationships, Wellness, and Money, our stewardship and sustainability committee held our traditional Thanksgiving Dinner free of charge to everyone and also shared a very powerful message of music, love and thanksgiving for our congregation. At that dinner and over the following weeks, we asked all of you write a Love Letter to Trinity, where you were asked to share what was it that inspires you about Trinity and what would happen to you if Trinity would disappear, those letters were compiled in a booklet that is available to everyone. If you have not yet obtained a copy, I encourage you to grab one next time you are at church, or let the office know if you would like one to be mailed to your home. These Love Letters are one of the most heartfelt and true testaments of the love each of us shares for our beautiful church family. We hope each of you is using the inspiration from these letters to build new relationships, share the truth about the love of God, improve the wellness of our community and help us become a sustainable congregation. The model of stewardship 365 is one where we embrace stewardship not just during a month or season of the year, but rather throughout the entire year. This is a transformational change for our congregation and one we hope everyone starts to embrace. What does stewardship throughout the year really mean? Well it means we spend the entire year looking out for the well being of our parishioners, building relationships within our communities, and it also means finding ways to meet the financial needs of the church throughout the year. For example, in 2018 when my family was blessed with a small pay increase at work, we immediately turned that blessings from God into an increase to our weekly pledge; we didn t wait for our 2019 pledge. It is in the financial side were our church has faced some of the most difficult challenges this past year. I know talking about Money is one of our least favorite things, yet it is a discussion we must have. The Holy Currency of Truth means sharing these facts with you in a manner that we call all learn about our challenges and find solutions together. We began 2018 with an unbalanced budget and not enough pledges to be able to sustain the needs of our church. This led us to a situation where we had to take a $50,000 loan from our Endowment funds. This was a one-time loan to be repaid over the next 5 years. The good news is that through the end of year, we didn t use the full amount of the loan and kept it at approximately $42,000. Another good piece of news is that thanks to the Vestry fundraisers, primarily our annual auction dinner, we have been able to re-pay nearly $11,000 of the loan this year, which was not part of the planned 5 years.

At the 2018 annual meeting in January, when the announcement of taking this loan was made, it also came with a decision from the vestry that in 2019 we would not be taking any further loans and certain decisions going as far as potential staff cuts would need to made. Over the past couple months we have again been guided by the Holy Currency of Truth to share exactly what our financial situation would be going into The 2019 budget, assuming the same level of pledging we received from the congregation in 2018, left us with a deficit of $83,500 for With this situation upon us, the stewardship and sustainability committee working together with the vestry, the business group, our treasurer, and Pastor Rachel sent out one last calling for the Holy Currency of Money through 1) additional mailing requests to submit a pledge, 2) a special sermon to openly discuss our Financial situation and Pledging, and 3) presented a Narrative Budget that explained how everything we do at Trinity and all the money that comes through pledges really goes back to increasing our Wellness, developing our Relationships, developing our Gracious Leadership and Sharing our Truths. Speaking of those Truths, what has happened over the past couple months in terms of our congregation responding to a time of need has been truly inspirational and a testament that where there is faith and a will to succeed, God will always provide a path. I am more than delighted to share with you the following increases in pledges from 2018 to 2019: Increase Total number of pledges received Total dollars pledged $251,610 $308,283 $56,673 The increase in pledges actually represents a total gain of 24 new pledges since in 2018 we lost 6 due to deaths or families moving away. In addition, we received an additional $20,000 through a matching program where the congregation matched an anonymous $10,000 contribution by a parishioner. These increases in pledging, together with small adjustments to our operating budget that the vestry has approved means that we are moving into 2019 without any staff reductions. What s more, we have a budget for 2019 that has NO deficit at all a first for our congregation in a long period of time! Praise to God for guiding us in this difficult time, and Thank you to everyone in our congregation who stepped up in a time of need. In the end, we pray that 2018 goes in our memories as the year when our faith in God and the Cycle of Blessings he provides through the Holy Currencies allowed our congregation to turn the corner into becoming a 365 sustainable congregation. ****End of Senior Warden Annual Report**** Thank you for everything that you do and will continue to do for your Trinity family. Blessings and Godspeed to all! Gonzalo Canseco Senior Warden

Thank you to everyone who participated in this year s annual pledge and stewardship drive. As we move to the model of Year Round Stewardship and making the Holy Currencies part of the everyday life and DNA of Trinity Everett, all I can say is thank you and WAY TO GO!!!!!!! God spoke through each and every one of you who came through to give us a balance budget for 2019! Hopefully you were able to attend the annual meeting and your saw the report out on our 2019 approved budget and heard about the simply amazing results of our pledges for the coming year. Here are some highlights: We have a planned surplus for the first time since I have been here at Trinity. It is just under $1500, but think about the years of recent history when we have had planned deficits, even with grants and/or loans from out endowments You all stepped up and made the circle of the Holy Currencies whole and we are in an upward spiral. We had 110 pledges this year compared to 92 in 2018 In 2018 we lost 6 members, so our increase in pledge numbers is really 24 Our total dollars pledged in 2019 are $308,283!!!! This is an increase of $56,802 over Simply put WOW! Watching the congregation come together and unite behind our money needs for this year over the last few weeks has been nothing short of inspirational. A special thank you to our anonymous donor who offer $10,000 additional in their pledge as a matching challenge and to all the families that stepped up and made this happen. Thanks to you, this $20,000 is what put us over the hump and allowed us to keep our current levels of staffing and programing here at Trinity while having a balanced budget. As we move forward through 2019 and into the future we need to keep the conversation going about year round stewardship. We need to keep talking about money. We need to invite all those families who did not pledge to pledge some amount. We need to build the organizational norm that Families at Trinity pledge. We pledge what we can, but we pledge; be that $1 a year or be it significantly more. Pledging is our commitment to God and to one another. No matter how big or how small. A pledge is a connection. A connection to each other and the connection to the final Holy Currency of Money that completes the circle and lets us continue to spiral upward to the glory of God. So, thank you. Thank you for everything you do and will do this year at Trinity. We have some exciting times ahead of us. I am proud to be a part of this with each of you. In His service, David Kosar, Treasurer

Our recent Annual Meeting and the combined worship that preceded it were very encouraging. We rallied, and our future as a vital faith community, renewed it the Spirit, was evident. And how needed we in this world. We often hear the term seekers to describe people coming back to church to find meaning, purpose, and deep spirituality in their lives. We know there is immense suffering in this world natural disasters, acts of oppression between humans, confusing presidential politics, mixed messages of right and wrong, a local and national crisis with homelessness - in short, many questions seemingly without answers. How do we quiet ourselves to find the voice of God in this darkness? Seeking can describe most of us at times. Many are drawn to the Episcopal church for the drama of the seasonal liturgical life. Lent is often a time we see new faces at church, and the power of the Lenten scriptures and solemn liturgy, with the dramatic music that supports it, can connect people to the sacred in profound ways. This is a great time to welcome newcomers, while being conscious of the value of peace and quiet in the church as we prepare for worship. Personal prayer and scripture study are great ways at home, and of course, at our parish church. There are some wonderful opportunities this Lent. I will, for the first time, be taking Pastor Rachel s Episcopal 101 class. In my 18 th year as music director, I find this to be exciting to fill in the blanks in my own understanding, and a good spiritual discipline for Lent. Who else will join me? GRAND PIANO UPDATE: We are almost there! If you would like to make a memorial donation to finish the rebuilding of our new (to us!) Knabe grand piano, please do so soon. Fandrich & Sons Piano Builders are almost done, so it we should be seeing and hearing it in a few weeks. YOUTH MUSIC --- Time to Chime! We are revamping our youth music to include Youth hand chimes for middle school and up, at the same time as Junior Choir, right after the 10:00 service most Sundays. The older kids will ring while little ones learn basic singing. Then most will finish the hour with a short vocal rehearsal (older kids only), so they can enjoy more satisfaction and challenge. My hope is for all our kids to continue as close to every week as possible. Parents on hand is appreciated (we need at least one on hand at all times.) Thank you all for your continued support of the various ministries at Trinity! David Spring Music Director davespring@comcast.net

Membership was seriously low at the beginning of 2018 because of illness and passings of our beloved sisters. We were left with only 4 members in our chapter order at Trinity Everett. Our pastpresident: Kitti Lindusky insisted that after three years or more of acting President of the Order of the Daughters of the of the King she wanted to step down. She finally convinced Nancy Smith to become the next president of the DOK. Invitations for discernment into the Order of the Daughters of the King were accepted by four congregational women of Trinity Episcopal Church. Elections were held and the following officers were elected: Past. President Kitti Lindusky, President Nancy Smith, Vice President Karen McAllister, Secretary-Treasurer Leah Timberlake. DOK. NATIONAL STUDY GUILDS for women in discernment were distributed to each candidate Each monthly meeting we focused upon prayer and the study guild with loving and caring discussion. This has become a very enthusiastic sisterhood of which we are truly grateful. As of this month, February 2019, we have three ladies who have completed their requirements for discernment and will become members of the Daughters of the King with the approval of our priest Rev. Rachel Hamilton. The following ladies will become members of the Daughters of the King this Spring: Eileen Bernat, Linda Dixon, and Laura O Reilly. We now have 10 members at Trinity. AS INDIVIDUALS OUR FAITH IS ROOTED IN OUR BAPTISMAL COVENANT. WE FOLLOW TWO RULES: THE RULE OF PRAYER AND THE RULE OF SEVICE. We guide our lives by vows of respect and love of all Gods creation, including all of mankind. We are of service wherever our talents lead us. The Order of the Daughter s of the King invites ladies to join our meetings the first Sunday of each month. LOVE TO SEE YOU. Pres. of DOK Nancy Smith smithnancy2@comcast.net

JAZZ IT UP Dinner & Auction This fun fundraiser is a highlight of our church s year and not to be missed! This year looks to be another winner with Cherry Street Brass, headed up by our own Don Wayne, providing jazzy and danceable standards, and Charlene Rawson creating a menu featuring pork tenderloin, baked salmon and of course our Mad Dessert Dash! The evening is complete with the big Silent Auction, AND Live Auction with our master auctioneer, Pastor Rachel Taber-Hamilton! Tickets are the same price as last year at $30 each. And with a $500 Amazon gift card as the prize you ll want to secure some raffle tickets at $10 each or three for $25. You will be able to purchase tickets starting March 24th. For more information please see or call Carol Bartley at

The success of JAZZ IT UP, our Dinner Auction Gala on May 11, depends on YOUR generous donation of unique items for both the silent and live auctions. We re looking for gift baskets of food, wine or other creative items, gift certificates to local restaurants or businesses, dinner parties, antiques, the use of vacation rentals, sports tickets, adventures (remember the balloon ride from last year?), movie or theater tickets, etc. etc. etc. We already have several items, including a beautiful china tea set and a collection of handmade pottery. Please start thinking NOW about what you can contribute. Donation forms will be available in the Narthex and the office. Remember, this is not a rummage sale! If you would normally donate something to Goodwill or Value Village, it s probably not suitable for the Auction. Not sure? Contact Carol Bartley ( ) or gtopaz@juno.com with questions.

As you think about your pledge for next year, we hope you will consider donating electronically. It s convenient for you and helps Trinity s cash flow tremendously. If you are interested in learning how easy it is, contact Kelly in the church office, and he will help you set it up. One drawback to contributing online is that you don t have an envelope to put in the collection plate on Sunday. We have a solution! Electronic giving cards are available in a holder on the wall to your right as you enter the sanctuary. Simply take a card (see sample below) and place it in the plate during the offertory. The cards will be collected after the service and reused. Thank you for your generous support of our Parish!

Supporting the Everett Gospel Mission The Everett Gospel Mission has been caring for people experiencing homelessness for 55 years. On any given night, up to 40 children will fall asleep in their shelter, feeling safe and warm. It takes a lot of time, money and supplies to care for so many families. Right now, diapers, wipes and other baby supplies are in great demand. The women s shelter especially needs diapers in sizes 3, 4, 5 and 6, plus pull-ups. If you d like to help supply this need, please bring these items to the Trinity narthex and deposit them in the box marked Everett Gospel Mission Diaper Drive located in Trinity s entry hall (the narthex). By donating something as seemingly basic as diapers, you will be directly benefitting homeless children and families in our area! If you have any questions, please call Mary Heileson at , or ask Ron Chappell or Melody Oxley.

Items are needed for the Food Pantry that Kelly maintains in the Church Office. When bringing items in please keep the following things in mind: please do not donate food that is expired all outdated and expired foods will be thrown out this is not the time to clean out your pantry Any opened food items will be thrown out
