I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. John 14:27 The world wants to steal our peace. The media bombards us with constant images and messages of fear and unrest (and let s be real here, it s on both sides!) The images and accounts in the media increase our anxiety, anger, grief; and heightens our fear that any hope for peace is slipping away. And while it seems like conflict, accusation, and divisiveness have reached all new highs, the world has always had more than its share of these things. We want peace, but there is no peace (Ezekiel 13:10). Psalm 109:5 declares, they reward me evil for good, and hatred for my love. Divisiveness seems to be inherent in humanity. History is filled with people oppressing others for any number of reasons, mostly about power: slavery, genocide, wars, bigotry, politics are all means by which the world seeks to oppress others to elevate their own group with power and prestige. God says these things earthly power and prestige are their reward. Do not as the hypocrites do so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward (Matthew 6:2,5,11). Jesus said Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! (Luke 12:51). Perhaps the growing division in the world is a sign Christ is coming soon to judge the world. That may be, but in the meantime, we need to hold onto our hope. Jesus does not offer peace to the earth. The peace Jesus offers is an internal peace, an eternal peace, an heavenly peace. Jesus offers peace to our souls. This is where we find our solid rock grounding. In Christ s peace. In Christ s peace that all is well with our soul. The solid rock that we are grounded on Scripture and know the God s-honest truth. We can pray for the rest of the world, but divisions will remain, and peace will always be elusive until we finally enter into Christ s eternal reign. Only then will there be true peace. 2 Here is a prayer for peace, by Jackie Trottmann. Dear God, I need your peace now. Silence my thoughts of confusion. Silence my thoughts of anxiety. Silence my thoughts of grief or despair. Silence my thoughts of hurt or anger. Pastor s Note Continued. When there is chaos and turmoil surrounding me, shelter and protect me with your peace and loving, powerful presence. As I take this time to stop and pray, fill me with your peaceful presence. With each breath I take, I breathe in your peace that surpasses all understanding. Help me to focus on peace instead of unrest. I surrender my unrest to you so that I may receive peace. Help me to be a spark that ignites peace in others. Thanks be to God, Amen. Grace and peace be with you! Pastor Jon Approximately 3 years ago, we as a church, decided we were going to start a mission project to help feed the children of the Forestburg School District which needed help. We set up guidelines and have been providing food to needy children, both during the school year and summer. The main requirement for a child to be in our Backpack Program is the school has to recommend them, meaning they qualify for the free lunch program and the school sees that there is truly a need. Along with providing snacks for the child/children we also have been providing a Family Pack for each family. This assures us the child/children gets at least one meal during the school year weekends, and during the week in the summer. Sounds like a lot of food, right? Well here is an example of a Family Pack. Great Value Spaghetti Noodles Great Value Spaghetti Sauce Members Mark Green Beans Great Value Cereal Great Value Mac-N-Cheese Great Value Loaf of Bread Great Value Gallon of 2% Milk Kool-Ade The total price of a one week Family Pack is $14.74 for one family! Now as I said, this is just one of the Family Packs contents of which is rotated every three weeks in order they do not receive the same meal each week. However, they do receive milk and bread each week. The average cost of the three different plans is $ You re probably wondering about the contents of a Backpack. During the school year the cost of the Backpack is $6.38 per week. During the summer or week long breaks from school the cost is $8.61. When the family has one child they receive the Family Bag and a Backpack during school for a total of approximately $23.42 and each additional child the cost will increase by $6.38. During the summer the cost of Family Bag and Backpack for one child is $25.65 and for each additional child, add $8.61. We currently have 5 families and 10 children. We have not received the completed applications from the school and expect for these numbers to increase as they do during the first few months of school. We do have families come and go from the program during the year. Currently we are not receiving sufficient funds to cover our expenses. 3 Kids Klub News Kids Klub has started back with a bang! We ve played games, celebrated birthdays, all the while learning what it means to be a Christian. We ve been averaging about 12 kiddos each Wednesday evening with the Youth averaging about 8. (Pastor Jon is teaching a confirmation class to this group.) We have a full fall line-up ahead of us. We are planning on a hay ride and weenie roast at Ms. Carolyn Hawk s, a trip to the Pumpkin Patch at Black Creek Farm, the Kiddie Karnival for all (see flyer on following page), and the Kids Klub kiddos will be presenting New Star as our Christmas program during regular church service on December 9th. So mark your calendars now, it is sure to be a hit! But we couldn t do any of this without the help of the individuals who plan and teach lessons each week, the volunteers who provide and/or contribute to the meals each week, and the others who are there each week to do WHATEVER we need of them. 4 It s That Time! Volunteers Are Needed!! The date for the Kiddie Karnival has been set for Wednesday, October 31 st at 5:00. Volunteers are needed to donate food (hot dogs and all the trimmings), help with the games, set up and take down of the games, and clean up following the event. There will be a sign-up sheet for anyone wanting to volunteer and help with this fun-filled, family activity. Your help is greatly appreciated! 4
